A Magneto-Kinematic Model of the Solar Cycle
Abstract
A simple kinematical model of the solar cycle, based upon field amplification by the solar differential rotation, is presented. Numerical solutions of the model equations are found which are in close quantita- tive agreement with Spoerer's Law of Zones, Maunder's butterfly diagram, and the poleward migration of polar prominences. Fluctuations in eruption rate are introduced and are shown to produce fluctuations in period, amplitude, and relative phase and amplitude in the two solar hemispheres which agree closely with observed values
