Title:Threshold Coloring and Unit-Cube Contact Representation of Graphs
View PDFAbstract:We introduce a graph coloring problem, which we call threshold coloring. The input to the problem is a graph G along with a spanning subgraph H of G and we assign integer colors to the vertices in V such that for each edge e = (u, v) of G, the difference in the colors of u and v is inside a threshold if and only if e is an edge in H. We show the relation of this problem to several well-known graph coloring and graph theoretic problem, such as vertex coloring of graphs, proper interval graph representation and graph sadwich problem. As a result we prove NP-completeness for some variants of the threshold coloring problem and give polynomial-time algorithm for some other variant. For some subclasses of planar graphs such as, paths, trees, outerpaths, hexagonal, pentagonal and octagonal-square grid, we give algorithms to solve the threshold coloring of any spanning subgraphs of these graphs. Finally we address a geometric problem of representing planar graphs with unit cubes and using the results of the threshold coloring problem, we obtain unit-cube contact representation for some subclasses of planar graphs.
