The Register This is an interesting deep dive-in-progress into the messy and purposefully inscrutable world of ad tracking, and how libraries may inadvertently be exposing data about patron activity. It ultimately raises more questions than answers about library users' privacy when engaging online, but the biggest red flag turns out not to be any of the suspected library vendors, but the library's own website and its use of Facebook and Google services. 😐 #libraries #DataPrivacy #analytics https://lnkd.in/dZ8w6SKn

We had the honor of hosting the phenomenal Social Science Researcher and Journalist, Bronwyn Jones, in our latest AI Journalism Fellowship session, focusing on "Ensuring Ethical and Equitable AI Practices in Journalism." Highlights of the session: 1. Critical Thinking and Transparency: Bronwyn stressed the need for journalists to approach AI tools with critical thinking and transparency, ensuring that all AI outputs are fact-checked before use. 2. Global AI Disparities: She highlighted the disparities in AI usage across different regions, emphasizing the challenges of knowledge gaps, resource constraints, and language barriers. 3. Ethical Considerations: Bronwyn underscored the ethical implications of AI in journalism, particularly the risks of misinformation, plagiarism, and perpetuating societal biases. 4. Community-Based Initiatives: The potential of community-based AI initiatives for language preservation and education was explored, advocating for open-source models to benefit marginalized communities. 5. Stronger Regulation: Bronwyn called for stronger regulation in AI development and deployment to mitigate risks and ensure responsible usage. In conclusion, the session empowered our fellows to adopt best practices, develop clear policies, and collaborate across organizations to advocate for responsible AI use. Open Technology Fund is supporting Patrick Boehler's Resilient Media Project, which will help exiled and underground media in authoritarian contexts with the adoption of secure, censorship-resistant publishing strategies. The project will leverage internet freedom tools to counter some of the primary digital challenges newsrooms face reporting in and from repressive environments so that journalists can better serve their communities.
