- Els antandroy o tandroy són un grup ètnic tradicionalment nòmada de Madagascar que habita a la part àrida del sud de l'illa, anomenada . Els seus orígens es remunten a la part continental d'Àfrica Oriental. Al segle xvii, però, els antandroy va sorgir com una confederació de dos grups governats per la dinastia zafimanara fins que unes inundacions van provocar la dissolució del regne al voltant de 1790. La dificultat del terreny i el clima van protegir i aïllar a la població, evitant-la subjugació al regne d'Imerina al segle xix; més tard, les autoritats colonials franceses també va lluitar per exercir la seva influència sobre aquesta població. Des de la independència de Madagascar, han patit prejudicis i marginació econòmica, el que ha provocat una migració generalitzada i matrimonis mixtos amb d'altres grups ètnics, i els va portar a exercir un paper clau en les protestes que van desencadenar la fi del govern del president Philibert Tsiranana el 1972. Tot i que els antandroy comparteixen moltes característiques culturals comunes amb d'altres grups ètnics de Madagascar, com el respecte pels avantpassats, un idioma comú i complexos ritus funeraris, els distingeixen certes pràctiques. Així, són especialment coneguts per les seves danses distintives, les robes teixides en cotó, les tombes decorades i l'ús de taulons en la construcció de les cases. A més, a diferència de la majoria dels grups ètnics malgaixos, depenen en major mesura de tubercles i d'altres cultius que depenen menys de l'aigua que l'arròs, molt freqüent en altres parts de l'illa. La pastura de zebús segueix sent la principal activitat econòmica dels antandroy, i les seves tombes estan decorades amb nombrosos cranis de zebú com a distintiu de riquesa. (ca)
- The Tandroy are a traditionally nomadic ethnic group of Madagascar inhabiting the arid southern part of the island called Androy, tracing their origins back to the East Africa mainland.In the 17th century however, the Tandroy emerged as a confederation of two groups ruled by the Zafimanara dynasty until flooding caused the kingdom to disband around 1790. The difficult terrain and climate of Tandroy protected and isolated the population, sparing them from subjugation by the Kingdom of Imerina in the 19th century; later, the French colonial authority also struggled to exert its influence over this population. Since independence the Tandroy have suffered prejudice and economic marginalization, prompting widespread migration and intermarriage with other ethnic groups, and leading them to play a key role in protests that sparked the end of President Philibert Tsiranana's administration in 1972. The Tandroy may also be called the Antandroy, but it is technically redundant: roy means thorn; the prefix an means place of; and the additional t means from. While the Tandroy share many common cultural features with other ethnic groups in Madagascar, such as respect for the ancestors, a common language and complex funeral rites, certain practices set them apart. They are particularly known for their distinctive dances, cotton woven clothing, elaborately decorated tombs, and unique use of plank architecture in the construction of their houses. Also unlike most Malagasy ethnic groups they rely more heavily on tubers, yams, millet and other crops that are less dependent on water for cultivation than the rice so prevalent elsewhere on the island. The herding of zebu remains the principal economic activity of the Tandroy, and their tombs are commonly decorated with numerous zebu skulls as an indication of wealth. (en)
