The first death from COVID-19 in Ohio was reported on March 19. Subsequently, records supported by further testing showed that undetected cases had existed in Ohio since early January, with the first confirmed death on March 17. By April 23, Ohio had 656 confirmed deaths; by May 1, there were 1002 confirmed deaths. Accurate data was difficult to obtain due to limited test availability. By December 12, a total of 553,461 cases had been reported leading to 31,803 hospitalizations and 7,477 deaths. As of December 1, 2022, Ohio has administered at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine to 7,534,093 people, or 64.45% of the population, completed vaccination for 6,983,586 people, or 59.74% of the population, and administered first booster to 3,914,346 people, second booster doses to 1,566,961 people, and updated boosters to 1,396,473 people. As of December 1, 2022, the state department of health reported 80,959 hospitalizations and 25,505 deaths since January 1, 2021 among individuals not reported as fully vaccinated, and 6,028 hospitalizations and 1,432 deaths among fully vaccinated individuals in the same time period. - A video from the Ohio Department of Health shows a minefield of mousetraps and table tennis balls, row upon row, that turn into a predictable maelstrom of flying debris once a bouncing ball tumbles into view.
It's also a metaphor for the menacing spread of the coronavirus, where just one person interacting with others can produce a chain reaction of devastating consequences. The video is among the clearest visualizations yet of how proximity can turn lethal — and, conversely, how isolation can turn the tide. In the second half of the video, the traps are spaced at greater distances as a table tennis ball bounces across the floor without triggering any hazards. (en)
