Dopo la vittoria di Wade alle elezioni presidenziali del 2000, il partito ha dato luogo ad una coalizione con alcuni partiti minori (coalizione Sopi) e ha vinto le elezioni parlamentari del 2001, riuscendo ad esprimere la guida del governo con Mame Madior Boye (2001-2002), Idrissa Seck (2002-2004) e Macky Sall (2004-2007). Wade fu riconfermato alle elezioni presidenziali del 2012; il partito vinse le elezioni parlamentari del 2007 e fu parte integrante dei governi di Cheikh Hadjibou Soumaré (2007-2009) e Souleymane Ndéné Ndiaye (2009-2012). Nel 2008 il partito fu indebolito dalla scissione promossa da Macky Sall, che costituì una nuova formazione politica, l'Alleanza per la Repubblica. Le elezioni presidenziali del 2012 videro la vittoria di Sall, che sconfisse al ballottaggio il Presidente uscente Wade. De partij werd op 31 juli 1974 opgericht toen president Léopold Senghor (PSS) besloot tot de invoering van een meerpartijenstelsel in zijn land. Oprichter van de partij, Abdoulaye Wade was van 2000 tot 2012 president van Senegal. Van 2001 tot 2012 had de PDS als onderdeel van de Coalitie voor Verandering een absolute meerderheid in de Nationale Vergadering. In de periode daarvoor was de PDS telkens de tweede partij van het land. De positie van tweede partij nam de PDS wederom in na de verkiezingen van 2012 en 2017.
