- The Beautiful South were an English pop rock group formed in 1988 by Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway, two former members of the Hull group The Housemartins, both of whom performed lead and backing vocals. Other members throughout the band's existence were former Housemartins roadie Sean Welch (bass), Dave Stead (drums) and Dave Rotheray (guitar). The band's original material was written by Heaton and Rotheray. After the band's first album, Welcome to the Beautiful South (1989, recorded as a quintet), they were joined by a succession of female vocalists. All of the following artists performed lead and backing vocals alongside Heaton and Hemingway – Briana Corrigan for albums two and three after appearing as a guest vocalist on one, followed by Jacqui Abbott for the fourth to seventh albums, and finally Alison Wheeler for the final three Beautiful South albums. The group were known for their wry and socially observant lyrics. They broke up in January 2007, claiming the split was due to "musical similarities", having sold around 15 million records worldwide. - The Beautiful South was een Britse popgroep. De meest kenmerkende nummers van The Beautiful South bevatten vaak teksten met een flinke dosis zwartgallige humor. Terugkerende thema's zijn drankgebruik, seks, religie, politiek, zelfmedelijden, zelfspot en uitgedoofde liefdesrelaties. Het grootste deel van de nummers van The Beautiful South werd geschreven door Heaton en Rotheray. Heaton en Hemingway verzorgden om beurten de leadzang. Op Welcome to the Beautiful South, het eerste album dat de band in 1989 uitbracht, was een achtergrondzangeres, , te horen. Op latere platen kreeg ze een prominentere rol: ze trad soms naar voren als leadzangeres en zong duetten met Heaton en Hemingway, waaronder A Little Time (het 8e nummer op het album Choke), dat in 1990 een van de grootste hits van de band werd. Dit nummer stond 5 weken in de Nederlandse Top 40 en behaalde daarin (als hoogste) de 24e positie. Het was daarmee minder succesvol dan Song for Whoever (van het album Welcome to the Beautiful South) dat in het jaar ervoor (in 1989) de 17e positie behaalde met een totaal verblijf van 6 weken in de Nederlandse Top 40.
