Cheaper or more environmentally friendly flights? The results from our recent survey are clear: business travelers still prioritize cost over environment. Our research with Bilendi shows that less than half of respondents are willing to pay more for an environmentally friendly flight, with only 11% listing sustainability as a top criterion. The top priorities? Direct flights and shorter travel time. This underscores why we need to embed sustainability directly into the business models without forcing travelers to choose. Local Share and Passenger Numbers Increase Between Years We just published our traffic report for June 2024. Passenger numbers increased 7.5% between years but we had hoped for a higher load factor. There are several contributing factors to a lower load factor between years but the biggest one is increased competition in transatlantic flights We are delighted to see that we are still growing our share in the Icelandic Market. It is evident that people in Iceland are happy with our services and that the word is spreading. We have always aimed to be the leading airline for leisure travel from Iceland, and our growing local share reflects that commitment. Our on-time performance was exceptional in June, 91.4% which is the result of the dedication of our operations team at PLAY, who are always fully focused on ensuring our flight plans run as smoothly as possible. Continued demand for air travel Swedavia’s traffic statistics for April 2024 shows ✈   Strengthen connectivity, increase in passengers and a strong demand for international travel are all key findings in Swedavia’s traffic statistics for April 2024. So far, this year's summer traffic programme has seen the launch of 25 new routes, including 10 brand new destinations.   "Demand for international travel at our airports continues to increase, while the range of destinations has been strengthened through the summer traffic programme. At the same time, the weaker trend in domestic travel continues, although there are regional differences. Iceland 🇮🇸 is increasingly becoming a popular destination for air travelers. In the summer of 2023, those who visited #Iceland between June and September numbered around 1.5 million, which exceeded pre-COVID air traffic volume. Between June-September 2024 bookings are now close to 2 million with an increase of 24.9% year-on-year. Icelandair has become Europe’s most punctual airline, with 84% of its almost 4,000 flights in June deemed as having arrived "on time" by aviation industry analysis provider Cirium, putting it ahead of Iberia Express’s 82% and third-ranked Iberia’s 78%. Icelandair announced on July 8 that it carried 514,000 passengers in June, taking it to over 2 million for the first half of 2024, a 7% increase on the January-June 2023 period. Around half of the airline's passengers stopped briefly in Iceland while crossing the Atlantic Ocean from continental Europe to the US or Canada. SAS and Finnair rounded out the European top five, with both Scandinavian carriers having more than 75% of their flights for the month registered as on time by Cirium, a measurement based on take-offs and landings happening within 15 minutes of schedule.

International travel on the rise Swedavia’s traffic statistics for June 2024 shows ✈   The trend of strong international travel continues, driven by the airlines' investments in a strong range of destinations for international travel via #StockholmArlandaAirport and #GöteborgLandvetterAirport. At Landvetter, international travel increased by 11 per cent in June, while international traffic increased by 7 per cent at Arlanda. During June, more than 3.1 million passengers flew via one of Swedavia's ten airports.   "Airlines continue to add more traffic to our airports, especially to destinations in other countries in Europe. The market is responding strongly to these investments despite a weak economy and other uncertainties in the world around us. Well, the 40 seat D328eco (324 Kts) will struggle in sales! a 40 seater its up against the ATR-42-600 (300 Kts) with 50 seats, all things equal cost per seat will be cheaper on the ATR (CASK unit cost). ATR-42-600 productivity per FH = 27,600 ASK D328eco productivity per FH = 24,000 ASK The BIG problem is that the 30-40 seat market is dead for 24 years now, EMB-120's, Saab 340, DHC-8-100 aircraft today are <$2 million used, new ATR, D328 are +$400K per seat, so $+16M (D328eco)_to $ +20M (ATR-42-600), a BIG jump from $2 million used aircraft, small old regional airlines cannot afford it! Reality check, US is the largest scheduled commercial regional airline market, RAA with 2,000+ aircraft, yet today there are only 8 x ATR-42-600, 9 x DHC-8-100, 3 x Do328-100 and 4 x Saab 340's in scheduled service. The large turboprop market is (>30 seats) is DEAD. ATR will be back to +/-80 ATR deliveries in 2025 we hope! its the only game in town for new turboprops for now.

Speaking here at Routes Europe 2024 in Aarhus, we had a great opportunity to take a closer look at the transformation of flying. The aviation industry is in the middle of a tectonic shift toward a sustainable future. Vast investments will be necessary from airlines, the wider industry and governments to achieve our goals. In these crucial years, it is paramount that decisions are made wisely and in close partnership with each other with our gazes firmly fixed on the goal: getting to fully sustainable aviation. And here governments should resist the temptation of feel-good initiatives like arbitrary national taxes that don’t bring us any closer to our shared goal. Therefore it is a strong decision by the Swedish government to roll back parts of the passenger tax. This will help secure continued investments in both sustainability and our Scandinavian infrastructure and connectivity. Thanks to Andreas Carlson for putting this issue forward. SAS on climb power and delivers a solid profit for June. Every month SAS has to report its financial status, as long under C11 proceedings. The June report shows the airline had a profit of SEK614 million. But, accumulated loss FY23/24 (nov-jun) is SEK3,36bn. SAS liquidity at end June was SEK8,9bn an increase of SEK300m from May. If SAS keeps up the monthly profit pace for the remaining FY23/24 ( jul-oct) it may reach or come close to its full year financial guiding, a bottom line result in the range +/- 0 to a loss of SEK1bn, in my view. A significant improvement YoY if SAS delivers on guidance! It is likely SAS capitalize on the positive demand trend in the high-end leisure and corporate segments. These segments are less price sensitive than leisure and VFR, thus driving up revenues for SAS. In July, leisure and VFR will have a much higher revenue impact for SAS and should result in a less profitable month than June. From mid-August the corporate segment normally increase travel and SAS revenues/profit to be positive effected.

Due to cases of GPS interference, Finnair has made the decision to suspend daily flights to Tartu, Estonia, from April 29 to May 31 2024. Finnair is looking into an alternative approach solution, that doesn’t require a GPS signal, to be put in place at Tartu Airport. Last week, two Finnair flights had to divert back to Helsinki after GPS interference prevented the approach into Tartu.  Read for more. #airlines #airsideoperations #socialresponsibility #environement #politicalaffairs

How will sustainable aviation in the 2030s transform business and life in a region divided by the sea, characterized by long distances and cold climates, yet thriving with green transition businesses and a high quality of life? Our client, Kvarken Council EGTC, sought to understand the demand and potential routes for aviation solutions that are sustainable, economically viable, and socially beneficial. But how do you study the need for something that exists only in the wildest dreams? We have analyzed the region’s current travel patterns and built future scenarios to anticipate changing needs. The mixed-method process included qualitative interviews with stakeholders and a quantitative study involving 500 respondents from both Sweden and Finland. There is a clear demand for better connections, but also challenges. Stakeholders must not only influence access but also shape attitudes by creating transport systems where the entire chain is credibly sustainable. Most importantly, to motivate travel, the region must leverage its entrepreneurial drive and innovative mindset. Due to the current geopolitical situation, there is good momentum for deeper cross-border relations. Norse traffic report for April was a positive surprise, in terms of passenger growth YoY and vs last month (March), though load factor still below 80%. After the tough winter season, follows the unpredictable shoulder season for airlines flying across the North-Atlantic. This impacts on Norse also and as Easter came in March, this gave some headwind on demand in April. Norse is testing out a mix of scheduled routes and charter/ACMI during the low season months, lets see when Q1 is published on 14MAY how this business model turned out in revenues and bottom line result. Well, we know its gonna be a deficit in Q1, but we might get some indications on how the business plan worked out. Operationally, Norse remains as one of the best, April was another month with 100% regularity, well done Norse team and the great B787-8/9 with RR Trent 1000 turbines. I have compared Norse April traffic data with peer Play (icelandic LHLC operating only across the North-Atlantic via Iceland). Norse (10xB787)/Play(10xA320 serie) Pax 98542/122217 - ASK 0,866/0,435m - RPK 0,680/0,370m - LF 81/85% OTP 81/89% - Regularity 100%/na None of the airlines disclose yield/unit revenues in their traffic reports. Outlook (my view) Norse is likely to continue on the growth path in terms of passengers and load factor in May, though the real jump in passengers and load factor should be expected in June, then Norse will get 2 more B787s into the fleet. These 2 B787s have been on lease the last two years.
