Apocalypse, Please! (2022)
Entirely watchable comedy
While it starts off with a found-footage drive, this film rather quickly devolves into a "this guy is an asshat" comedy. The acting was no worse than any b-rated horror film you'd see elsewhere. The comedy moments were at time hilarious. Some characters were quite choice indeed and deserved more screen time. Entirely 100% watchable if you enjoy watching people slowly destroy each other. Devoid of any serious political statements, it was an amusing diversion.
Do not expect the apocalypse. Do not expect huge amounts of violence. Some sex from a distance, but no nudity. Just, you know, people slowly exposing hypocrisy. And it's funny!
Alien Warfare (2019)
Saving grace
You could see every cliche coming from a mile away, and every plot "surprise" or "twist". But we did watch it all the way through. But man, Daniel Washington was by far the highlight of this film. We considered turning it off, but we'd already laughed out loud twice, both times at him. Someone get this guy some more work! The other actors were better than a TV movie, but really made Washington shine with their deadpan responses.
Oh, yeah, so navy seals, classified, aliens blah blah blah. Good dialogue, though.
Mata Batin (2017)
Predictable, but a decent ride
Ok, so *spoilers*, this is kinda haunted house meets Insidious meets The Sixth Sense. Which means that the plot twists you can see a mile away. But quality-wise, this is no worse than a middling Hollywood horror film. And, honestly, its better than a lot of B-movies. The acting is fairly solid, the effects are quite high all things considered, and it is interesting to look at. This is not a bad film! It's not a great film, but hey, at least it's not terrible. So if you forced yourself to sit through any mid-2000's horror movie from Hollywood, you can watch this and feel that nice warm feeling of comfort of knowing what you're in for.
Chum thaang rot fai phii (2007)
Good-Bad film!
Transparent as a window, effects like a drunk first-year student, and yet! And yet! In the first three minutes we had this pegged as a B-movie, and yet the characters were so amusing I actually wondered, not what would happen, but how it would happen. The ghost-seeing druggie was particularly interesting. And remarkably progressive: the girls are pretty but don't get undressed or sexualised and there's an openly gay character whose sexuality is rarely mentioned, but more importantly wasn't a crime. To try to explain the plot would be pointless: if you want good effects, exciting fight scenes, and a complex plot, this not it. But if you enjoy a top-notch movie so bad you can't help but laugh, this is the one. Oh, and on Netflix, it's "the train of the dead". Good times.
