Gen V (2023)
Solid Spin-off
As a big fan of The Boys I've been looking forward to Gen V ever since I first heard about it. Then after seeing the trailers my excitement grew even more. After finishing the first season I can absolutely say that without a doubt Gen V has not only met my expectations but has exceeded them in every way. It's as fast paced and entertaining as the The Boys series. Even though you'd probably enjoy this more if you've seen the The Boys, you don't have to have seen them to like this. The action scenes are as good as anything I've seen on tv, as exciting and as ridiculous as they are in The Boys. This spin-off actually connects to the original in major ways. You need to watch this so you can follow the story better in the newest season of The Boys. I can't stop watching this and really hope they plan on doing several seasons of this because I'm hooked.
Peaky Blinders (2013)
Loved It
Peaky Blinders is not only one of the most underrated TV shows of all-time but it's also one of the greatest shows of all-time. It's even better than all of the hype and love it gets as more and more people are watching it and loving it. It's quickly becoming one of the better shows ever created. If you want to see how loved this show really is all you have to do is read through some of the reviews or look at the ratings. It's one of the rare shows where every season is just as great as the others. I just read they plan on doing a movie to end the show and I can't wait! If you haven't seen this amazing show yet then do yourself a favor and go watch it immediately.
Succession (2018)
Loved it but not everyone will
I actually enjoyed Succession but it's definitely a show that's not for everyone. The majority of the people I know end up loving up but there are those who don't like it too. You'll have to judge for yourself. What can you say about it that hasn't already been said? First off this show has won the Emmy for Best Drama every season it's been on and literally every major character has been nominated or won an Emmy for their work on this show. It's also one of the highest rated shows here so it's not only a hit with the critics but the fans love it too. Bottom line is this is one of the best shows ever created. It's one of the rare shows where every season is just as good as the others. There's no let down or weak season. This show is not for everyone though. If you are looking for action and a fast paced show then this isn't for you. What makes this series so special is the writing and acting. It will suck you into their world and won't let go. I can't recommend this show enough but again not everyone has is going to like it.
Fringe (2008)
A must watch for any sci-fi fan
Fringe was such a solid sci-fi series that was ahead of its time. It is clearly underrated as it's turned into a cult classic since it went off the air. I recently started rewatching it and didn't realize just how good it was when it was originally on. I'm not saying it's among my favorite sci-fi series ever but I understand it when I see other people say it's among theirs. Every episode is exciting and keeps the story moving forward. There will be times where you might be confused but don't worry because it will work itself out. You can tell these writers didn't just write season to season like most do. They had an end plan and had an answer for every mystery they brought up. Fringe is a must watch for any sci-fi fan.
Heroes (2006)
Pretty Good
Heroes was a superhero show before all the Marvel and DC shows took over. While it's not as good as the shows we get now (at least most of them that is), it was still a solid series...especially the first 2 seasons. After that the quality went down drastically but was still watchable. It was about ordinary people all over the world discovering they developed super powers. There are a bunch of separate stories that all come together to prevent a catastrophic future. The show was really popular when it first came out, so much so they tried to bring it back years after it went off the air with Heroes: Reborn. Do yourself a favor and avoid the reboot at all costs because it was awful. This original Heroes though is absolutely watchable.
The Walking Dead (2010)
I miss it even though it was prob time for it to end
Everyone knows that the last few seasons of The Walking Dead weren't the same quality as the earlier ones, those early seasons were groundbreaking in so many ways that this series is considered among the best ever. Because of that this show still gets a high rating from me. Like most long running shows, it had its ups and downs but even at its worst it was still the #1 show on cable, in fact it has been #1 every season it's been on the air. The last few seasons without Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) haven't been as good but it at least started to get back to being a pretty good show during this last season. Norman Reedus (Daryl) and Jeffery Dean Morgan (Negan) continued to carry the show after Andrew Lincoln's departure to the point where people looked forward to it again. Having said all that, it was still probably time for it to end.
Shantaram (2022)
Charlie Hunnam is as terrific as always
I've been a big Charlie Hunnam fan since Sons of Anarchy so I thought I'd give this a chance when I first heard about it. Then I saw the trailers and looked forward to it even more. It's every bit as good as I had hoped and Hunnam does an excellent job as the lead here. He plays a former heroin addict name Lin Ford who goes to Bombay n the 1980's as a fugitive looking to reinvent his life. There he becomes a doctor and finds himself in a lot of trouble by partnering with a crime boss that's in a war with some Russian gangsters and have to go to Afghanistan to sort it all out. He also alls in love with a woman that further complicates things while he tries to get his freedom from everyone.
Superstore (2015)
Pretty Funny
Superstore is pretty funny show that will have you laughing out loud. While I wouldn't put among my top 10-20 comedies I've ever seen, it's still funny enough to where it's worth watching. It's rare when a show has so many hilarious characters that are all almost equally funny. Shows like Friends, Seinfeld, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia & Parks and Recreation are great examples of that and those are among the best sitcoms ever. I'm not saying Superstore is as good as those all-time shows (not many shows are), it's still another sitcom where all the characters are equally funny. If you're looking for a good comedy that will have you laughing out loud then give Superstore a try. You won't be disappointed.
Ozark (2017)
Such a great show
I know it hasn't been long since it ended but I already miss Ozark. This show absolutely, without a doubt, lives up to all the hype it gets. It's a gripping thriller where the tension continues to build throughout each episode and each season and then pays off in a huge way. It really is a must watch show. People like to compare it to Breaking Bad and while I don't agree with that comparison because BB is the better show, Ozark is still terrific and worth every second. The one thing I can't stand about this show is Laura Linney's character (Wendy). While I don't mind Linney as an actress, because she's a pretty good one, in this she plays an annoying know it all who doesn't appreciate anything. Again, it's not her fault, it's just the way her character was written and as annoying as she was it still doesn't take away from the fact that this is such a great show.
Masters of the Air (2024)
Entertaining
Masters of the Air is every bit as good as I hoped it would be. There are a ton of war movies and series to choose from so if you're going to take the time to watch one it would have to be pretty special and stick out from the rest. Well, Masters of the Air definitely does that. Watching this is worth every second. This is a star studded cast both in front and behind the camera. It's produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the same two who made the perfect Band of Brothers. The cast is also amazing. It stars a pair of Oscar nominees from last year in Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan, it also stars a handful of up and coming stars in Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, etc. The story takes place during World War II. It's about the airmen who risk their lives and the brotherhood of the 100th Bomb Group. This has the feel and look of a big blockbuster summer movie. You can tell Apple put in a lot of money into this and it's beautiful. Just make sure you put enough time aside before you start because you're going to want to binge it as fast as you can.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Not what I was expecting
I never read any of the books for The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit so I didn't know what to expect but I did enjoy TLOTR trilogy and the trailers for this looked pretty good so I gave it a chance. Also, they've been hyping this show ever since it was announced years ago that this is going to be the next big show everyone falls in love with so I was expecting the next Game of Thrones. It's not, I was hoping it would be a lot better than what it is. I should have known since the reviews are so mixed but people were hyping it up forever and again the trailers were pretty good. I'm currently watching season 2 and it's just more of the same. I'll probably continue watching it but it's going to be a struggle to finish it.
Leverage: Redemption (2021)
Such a fun show
Leverage: Redemption is the reboot from the original. It brings the whole gang back together except Timothy Hutton with Noah Wyle, otherwise the rest of the cast is all back. The series is about some reformed criminals who put their unique skills to good use by helping regular citizens against big companies of both corporate and government that take advantage of those regular citizens. The come up with elaborate scams targeted against these greedy corrupt people and help the victims get justice. I love how at the end of each episode they do the flashbacks at everything we missed to make the plan come together and be successful. It's the same thing as the Oceans movies did. If you're looking for a fun show to waste a little time with then give Leverage: Redemption a chance.
Those About to Die (2024)
Starts a little slow but gets better and better
Those About to Die started a little slow but got better with each episode. I just found out about this show just a few days ago. I can't believe Peacock didn't promote this more considering how much it cost to make. Peacock never promotes any of their original shows very well but if they were to ever do it this is the one. I need to start off by saying that I love this genre so I may be a little biased, shows like Spartacus, Rome, Game of Thrones, etc and movies like Gladiator, Troy, etc are among my favorite shows/movies of all-time. While this isn't close to as good as those shows I just mentioned it's still worth watching if you're a fan of this genre. It's not exactly historically accurate but who cares, just enjoy it for the entertaining show it is. When an episode ended I couldn't wait for the next one and that's exactly what you want from a show.
Power Book II: Ghost (2020)
Better Than Expected
I had huge reservations about watching Power Book II: Ghost because (like everyone else) I hated Tariq's character on Power. I even started off with a low rating at first in Season 1 but the more I watched the more I came to really like show. I just finished Season 4 and found myself really enjoying the show a lot more than I thought I would, to the point where as soon I was done with an episode I was looking forward to the next one. This is not the same Tariq from the original Power, he's becoming much more like his dad and you go from hating this kid to actually rooting for him. I can't remember a show where I hated someone so much to actually rooting for him like I have Tariq. I'll still never get over what he did to his dad but this show is so much better than I expected it to be.
1923 (2022)
Looking forward to seeing more of this series
I absolutely love 1923! It's right up there with Yellowstone and 1883. If you're a fan of those two then you'll be a fan of this to. It takes the best of both of those shows and combine it for this one. This is definitely a show for adults with all the violence and language it that's what makes it so good. It's not for children. At this point Taylor Sheridan can do no wrong. He hits home run after home run. I love everything about this show...the acting, writing, directing, production, cinematography, etc, etc. Are all excellent. I mean this stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren for crying out loud. For those two A-list actors to do a tv show you know it had to be good. I know those two are going to get all the attention, and rightfully so, but there are just so many other great actors in this. Too many to even name. I can't wait to see more of this series and where it goes.
The Acolyte (2024)
Could've been better
I just finished watching The Acolyte and the first word that comes to mind is disappointing. I was really hoping for better. I'm a Star Wars fan so I was really looking forward to this. I do admit that the visuals here are incredible. The acting wasn't horrible either, it's the writing that's bad which seems like the ongoing issue with these Star Wars shows, except for The Mandalorian which was great. When the writing is this bad then it doesn't matter who the actors are or how good the show looks because it's still a bad show. I was hoping it would get better in season 2 but they just canceled it and I'm not too surprised by that at all.
The Penguin (2024)
A gritty, violent crime drama that is so fun to watch
I've been waiting for The Penguin ever since it was first announced it was going to series and I can tell you it's every bit as good as I expected. Colin Farrell is absolutely terrific as Oz Cobb a.k.a. The Penguin. He was a standout on The Batman and is even better in a lead role. On top of that Cristin Milioti is just as good as Sofia Falcone. The two of them fight to see who is the #1 gangster in Gotham and to "bring order in all the chaos." Some people were worried that a supporting character like The Penguin couldn't carry a show and it wouldn't work not having Batman or Bruce Wayne but fear not because this is more than just villain character on a superhero show, it's a great crime drama on its own. It's a gritty, violent crime drama that's so fun to watch unfold. I hope we get more stories like this from this world.
Billy the Kid (2022)
Hooked me from the start
Billy the Kid is obviously a series based on the infamous outlaw, William H. Bonney a.k.a. Billy the Kid. This series tries to give you a fresh take on Billy's story, it shows him as more of the good guy than the gunslinging outlaw we all know him as. They actually make Billy into a sympathetic figure. Listen, Emilio Estevez from Young Guns will always be my favorite Billy the Kid but Tom Blyth does a really good job here as Billy. Daniel Weber also does a great job as Jesse Evans. The way they show their close friendship and how they ended up on different sides is worth watching. The first season is mostly an origin story of how William H. Bonney became the outlaw Billy the kid. The second season is so full of action and story it's hard to stop watching.
Industry (2020)
Entertaining
Industry is now on its 3rd season and I just now started watching it. I'm not sure why I put it off for so long because I heard good things about it but I just put other shows in front of it. Now I'm actually mad at myself for putting it off this long because it's that good of a show. I started watching early last week and binged through all 3 seasons in that time. I just couldn't stop watching it. I know it gets compared to Succession a lot and I guess I can see why and even though I really liked this show, it's not nearly as good as Succession was. The one thing they have in common are a lot of spoiled rich people where every character on the show is unlikable. The other thing is how great the acting and writing is. It's one of the rare shows where each season gets better than the previous one. I'm looking forward to more seasons of this in the future.
Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist (2024)
Worth watching for the cast alone
Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist is a thrilling ride from the very start. It brings together one of the most talented ensemble casts of any show this year. It has a bunch of A-List movie stars at their best that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Kevin Hart, Tarija P. Henson, Terrence Howard, among others. It's impossible for a show to be bad with a cast like that, at the very least you're going to get good acting performances. There are also plenty of other great performances from lesser known actors which makes this show so good. But this is more than just the acting...the writing, production, directing, etc are all great. The terrific script gives all these stars a chance to do what they do best and I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these actors get nominated for their performances come award season.
Hacks (2021)
Surprised by how much I enjoyed this
I finally got around to watching Hacks recently and have to say I really enjoyed it. I never got excited about watching this even though I've heard nothing but great things about it since it came out. It just looked like a show that was aimed more for women and I'm not one. I was wrong...really wrong. It's hilarious and absolutely enjoyable for everyone. The last time I was this wrong about a show was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I didn't think that was a show for me either and I ended up loving it. While I didn't think Hacks wasn't as good as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel it's still a really good show. Jean Smart & Hannah Einbinder have such great chemistry that they literally will make you laugh out loud. Don't be like me and put this show off because you think it's aimed at a certain demographic because everyone will like it.
Foundation (2021)
Absolutely Amazing
I've been putting off watching Foundation ever since it first came out but now that I've seen it I can say I really enjoyed it. I never read the books so I can't say how close this is to them but I wouldn't care either way as long as it's a good show. It may start a little slow for some but that's because they do such an excellent job at building their world and characters but it does pick up. The CGI is absolutely amazing as this is one of the most beautifully shot shows I've ever seen. It really is a pretty solid sci-fi series and I'm glad I finally watched it. I'm about to finish Season 2 and I can say that without a doubt that Season 2 is even better than the first. Hoping next season keeps up the same quality of the first two because this is turning into one of the better sci-fi series I've ever see.
The Last of Us (2023)
I liked it but not everyone will
I actually understand why some people love the show and some people don't like it. For me...I thought The Last of Us was one of the best new shows of the year. I never played the game so I wasn't really sure what to expect going in. I then saw the trailer and read all the great reviews so my expectations rose even more. Well, it not only met those expectations but surpassed them in every way. Pedro Pascal has to be one of the most underrated actors on the planet. He's terrific in everything he's ever done and this is no different. He carries the show again. The rest of the cast is great as well, Bella Ramsey, who play the girl Ellie, has a bright future ahead of her. I hope they make of bunch of seasons (as long as the quality stays the same).
Six Feet Under (2001)
Such a good show
What can be said about Six Feet Under that hasn't already been said. I never watched this show while it was actually on even though I heard nothing but great things about it. Well, I recently got around to watching it and have to say I really enjoyed it. While I don't think it's quite the masterpiece that a lot of other people seem to think, I still think it's a pretty good show and would recommend it. It's a family drama that is so well written and acted that you forget it's a tv show. The show just feels real. Alan Ball finds a way to make death both sad and funny in only a way he can. I promise you'll love watching the Fisher family as you'll find yourself rooting for every member of the family.
Justified: City Primeval (2023)
Love that Justified is back (minus the daughter)
The original Justified is one of my favorite shows of all-time. I wasn't expecting Justified: City Primeval to be as good as the original (not much is) but I was hoping it would be good enough and it absolutely was. It did not disappoint. I'm excited to see where this is going to go but so far the one thing that I do know is I can't stand the daughter. Having said that, besides hating the daughter, Justified: City Primeval is one of the best new shows of the year. This takes place 15 years after the original ended and Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) is now a Marshall in Florida until a case brings him to Detroit to chase a violent sociopath (Boyd Holbrook). While no one is going to be a better adversary than Boyd Crowder (played by the amazing Walton Goggins), Boyd Holbrook is also a great actor and makes the character a worthy villain for Raylan. The writing and acting is what makes this show so special. While not as good as the original Justified, this is a worthy sequel as it's gotten nothing but great reviews by just about everyone. I read that this is only a limited series back for just this one season but with the way it ended they have to bring it back for at least another season but that ending is what everyone was waiting for. I really hope they do do another season because this show was terrific and you can't have enough Justified in my opinion.
