NIGMS Grantees Win 2024 Nobel Prize

Long-time grantees Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun awarded Nobel prize in physiology or medicine for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation, and David Baker awarded Nobel prize in chemistry for computational protein design.

Promoting A Broad NIGMS Community

We at NIGMS believe that a biomedical research workforce richly diverse in perspectives, skills, and experiences best serves the scientific enterprise. We hope that by providing these resources here, you will learn about us, more easily identify funding mechanisms that best fit you and your research or scientific career needs, and find the tools to submit successful grant applications.

Science for the Public

Strengthening public understanding and appreciation of science is a key NIGMS goal. As part of its efforts, the Institute provides free science education materials on a range of topics.

Cells rely on garbage and recycling systems to keep their interiors neat and tidy. If it weren’t for these systems, cells could look like microscopic junkyards—and worse, they might not function properly. So constant cleaning is a crucial biological process, and if it goes wrong, accumulated trash can cause serious problems.
