What is ACE?
The Access to Justice Centre for Excellence (ACE) is an academic research institute located at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law. ACE is focused on applied research that seeks practical resolutions to improve access to justice in Canada.

To support, promote and facilitate scholarly research and education on Access to Justice in Canada.

A Canada in which there is access to justice for all.

BC ACE DIrector Honoured with Global Research Fellowship
ACE Director Dr. Michelle Lawrence has been honoured with an appointment to the position of Associate Research Fellow with the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. This appointment follows her 2023 appointment to the position of Senior Associate with the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform & Criminal Justice Policy. These appointments reflect the strength of Dr. Lawrence’s research engagement in the fields of criminal law and access to justice, and they will afford new opportunities for her to extend the reach of that work to the global stage.
Upcoming Person Centred Justice COnference
ACE co-hosted a second Person-Centred Justice workshop in May 2024. The event ran over two days in hybrid format, with the in-person portion held at the University of Montreal. It was attended by a total of 50 Canadian and international scholars, practitioners and policy-makers, including representatives of the American National Centre for State Courts and the OECD. The success of this workshop has inspired planning for what promises now to be an annual gathering, to be held in the upcoming year in Vancouver in May 2025. Those interesting in participation can submit their information and a brief proposal outline in this form before October 7, 2024.
