'Funding cuts leave rural libraries at disadvantage' (UK)
Plans to cut staff at Goring library have been branded "stupid" by parish councillors. The library in Station Road is one of 16 that face losing two-thirds of their staff funding under proposals from Oxfordshire County Council. The others include those in Sonning Common, Benson, Woodcote and Watlington. The cuts mean volunteers would be needed to maintain the current opening hours but the libraries would be given free use of their buildings, access to the council's book stock and computer network and professional support from librarians. A meeting of Goring Parish Council on Tuesday heard claims that the county council's reasons for targeting certain libraries were driven by an anti-rural bias - Henley Standard

The report, "Future Libraries: Change, Options and How to Get There", draws on the first year of the Future Libraries programme set up by culture minister Ed Vaizey, and has been issued by the Local Government Association and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. Vaizey said the scheme "has shone a spotlight on excellent examples of innovation and creative partnership working" and called the report "a hugely useful resource, inspiring local authorities to emulate the best ideas to provide a first rate library service." - The Bookseller

For other records, the federal judiciary has reduced the current record retention time from 25 to 15 years in an effort to cut costs. All cases that went to trial or were filed before 1970 will be kept - iwatch

Samuel Beckett Digital Manuscript Project
The Beckett Digital Manuscript Project is a collaboration between the Centre for Manuscript Genetics (University of Antwerp), the Beckett International Foundation (University of Reading) and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (University of Texas at Austin). The development of this project started from two initiatives: (1) the 'in-house' genetic edition of four works by Samuel Beckett (a cooperation between the Universities of Antwerp and Reading), and (2) the Series of Variorum Editions of Samuel Beckett's Bilingual Works, initiated in 1986 by Charles Krance, with the permission and support of Samuel Beckett. With the kind permission of the Estate of Samuel Beckett, these initiatives were developed into the Beckett Digital Manuscript Archive, which combines genetic criticism with electronic scholarly editing, applied to the study of Beckett's manuscripts
