Dr Fayez A Shoukr Professor of Invertebrate Zoology, Faculty of Science, Tanta University, Egypt. A marine biologist interested in study of biodiversity and biology of invertebrates in marine environment. These invertebrates comprised cnidarians (sea anemones, hydroids, jellyfish, corals, coral reefs). Additional research concerned with the study of echinoderms (sea cucumbers, sea urchins), crustaceans (sea spiders, isopods, amphipods, barnacles) and edible mollusks (bivalves, gastropods) in the Mediterranean Sea, Red sea and Suez Canal of Egypt. These studies included their biodiversity, biology, histological ultrastructure and marine ecology especially the symbiotic associations.

The present study deals with the first record of alien crab Eurycarcinus integrifrons de Man, 187... more The present study deals with the first record of alien crab Eurycarcinus integrifrons de Man, 1879 collected from the Egyptian coasts of the Mediterranean Sea during May 2016. It is the first work describing the male specimen in the Mediterranean Sea. This crab species affiliates to family Pilumnidae, under the Decapoda infra-order Brachyura. A re-description compiled with more detailed taxonomical information as well as a distribution of the recorded species are provided.

Bacteria and fungi associated with the marine wood-boring isopods Limnoria lignorum and Sphaeroma... more Bacteria and fungi associated with the marine wood-boring isopods Limnoria lignorum and Sphaeroma serratum, and with their wood burrows and seawater were investigated. Plate counts using nutrient agar and Czapex Dox agar media in natural and in artificial seawater were used. The diversity and number of bacteria associated with the two isopods were much higher than those associated with wood or seawater, whereas the opposite was true for fungi. The hydrolytic activity of the predominant genera on carboxymethylcellulose and on different types of wood was investigated. The magnitude of fungal cellulase activity exceeded that of bacteria. Activities of bacterial extracellulases exceeded those of intracellulases, while the opposite was observed for fungi. Cellulolytic activity of the predominant isolates biodegraded labkh, peach, white oak and mahogany in decreasing order of activity. The present investigation is the first in Egypt to give histomorphological data about Heterosaccu... more The present investigation is the first in Egypt to give histomorphological data about Heterosaccus dollfusi, a rhizocephalan parasitic barnacle of the brachyuran crab Charybdis longicollis, collected from the eastern Mediterranean coast of Egypt at shallow depths (10-20 m). The structure of the mature externa and its male organs are essential for perception of both the taxonomy and reproductive biology of these specialized parasites. We use scanning electron microscopy and histological methods coupled with morphological description to investigate the anatomy of mature externa. The mature externa is distinguished by a visceral mass which comprises the ovary, paired colleteric glands, paired male receptacles and paired receptacle ducts. Distribution and diversity of corals have been studied in the northern Red Sea of Egypt (Hurghada... more Distribution and diversity of corals have been studied in the northern Red Sea of Egypt (Hurghada, Safaga & Quseir) to indicate the effect of some prevailing ecological factors on their abundance at the studied areas. The cover percentage of the coral reef community was estimated at each locality by using the standard method (the line intercept transect). The salinity was maximal (43.36 ‰) at El-Fanadir and minimal (39.89 ‰) at Ras El-Behar. Seawater temperature ranged from 27.12 °C at Ras El-Behar to 29.32 °C at El-Fanadir, while dissolved oxygen concentration measure 5.16 mg/l at Hurghada and 8.1mg/l at Ras El-Behar. Forty genera of corals were recorded among coral reefs at the studied sites; half of them were soft corals and the other half were scleractinian hard corals. A total of fifteen species of sponges were collected distinguished during 2011/2012. This list of... more A total of fifteen species of sponges were collected distinguished during 2011/2012. This list of genera and species provided in this work represented new records not previously reported for Elphinstone reef. The fifteen sponge species all were in the class Demospongiae represented by seven orders and thirteen families. The most common family was Theonellidae Lendenfeld, 1903, which was represented by one genus and three species. Most species were collected from the reef wall in relatively depth from 10-25 meters depth. The most widespread sponge collected was the massive Erylus sp. a number of species collected in this study may not have been described. For example Neopetrosia sp., Erylus sp., Suberea sp. and Theonella sp. collected during this study differ from the previously described taxon and may be a new species for this genus; however morphometric analysis are needed to confirm this assessment. Establishment of primmorphs from three Red Sea sponge species

Background Primmorphs are a special form of 3D-cell aggregates obtained from sponge cells. They c... more Background Primmorphs are a special form of 3D-cell aggregates obtained from sponge cells. They can be used as biofermenters for the production of bioactive secondary metabolites. In the commercial development of sponge-derived drug leads, the production of primmorphs is one of the methods proposed to solve the supply problem. In addition, using primmorphs for the production of drugs can preserve the sponge population from extinction by producing enough quantities of the extracts and compounds that present in wild sponges. Objectives The presented work aimed to produce primmorphs of Red Sea sponges Hemimycale aff arabica, Stylissa carteri, and Crella (Yvesia) spinulata as long-term cultivation in vitro and identify the impact of different cell densities on their formation and growth. Results Microscopic studies suggested that primmorphs are formed through four stages: amorphous large cell floc within 1–3 h; small irregular cell aggregations in 1 day; large primary cell aggregations and round-shaped primmorphs after 3 days. Primmorphs of C. spinulata and S. carteri remained alive for 3–6 months. The primmorphs of H. arabica remained alive for 1 month. Long-term primmorph cultivation in vitro allows the creation of a controlled live model under experimental conditions. Conclusion This work may provide a solution to the ‘supply problem’ in the commercial development of sponge-derived drugs, as primmorphs can be used as biofermenters for bioactive secondary metabolite production. In addition, primmorphs can be used to study the morphogenesis of their sponges at different stages and transdifferentiation as well as the processes of spiculogenesis.

Changes in the fine structure of growing female germ cells of Paracentrotus lividus and the seque... more Changes in the fine structure of growing female germ cells of Paracentrotus lividus and the sequence of their stages were examined by the light and the electron microscope. The investigation showed that, in the previtellogenic stage, the cytoplasm contained numerous vacuoles and few yolk granules. In the vitellogenic stage, the number of yolk granules increased and, as the oocytes attained maturity, the cytoplasms became packed with yolk. The structure of the nutritive phagocytes is also described and their relationship to the developing oocytes is discussed.
