The way Kivisto uses and brings to the foreground the people behind the thoughts, however, is disarming. The presentation of biographies makes for a literary style close to a brilliant novel clear, comprehensive, easy to read and fascinating. It also demonstrates in a new way ’the strength of the weak tie’, how more or less oddballs, through their marginal positions in academia, the newspapers, nongovernmental organizations, etc. were able to formulate new thought, and often indirectly and slowly, but still profoundly, contribute to political, cultural and social scientific discussion. It should be pointed out that Kivisto, like

Here we shall try to locate the cause of these di erences, and discuss when the economic concept of an ideal market is applicable in real life situations. Furthermore we shall discuss implications of the global disintegration of production, and the growing content of intangibles (experiences) in the goods we consume, for our understanding of the market. This takes us to a plausible theoretical explanation of the smile of

Narrow profit optimization or optimizing shareholder value no longer suffice—other stakeholders in a wide respect need to be considered in decision-making, the argument goes. This demand also holds consequences for economics—in particular for welfare economics that claims to theorize about utilizing resources to the benefit of society without the use of any moral standards or benevolence. Welfare theory started out talking about the wealth of nations but ended up with a recommendation that businesses should just mind their own business. We must ask whether economics can and should assist businesses in their new endeavour to promote sustainability.

The aim of this paper is to test some of the ideas of Schumpeter using the agent-based computational model presented in Bruun and Luna (2001). As in the early work of Schumpeter, this model assigns a central role to entrepreneurs, and through mechanisms involving creative destruction, the model displays cyclical behavior around a growth path. Inspired by Carlsson and Eliasson’s work on Schumpetarian dynamics and economic growth in their framework the experimentally organized economy (2002), focus will be placed on the role of the bankruptcy mechanism in selecting winners and exiting losers. 1

The laboratory is developed in Swarm and has an exensive user interface to enable use by other researchers or students
