I am a software engineer, specializing in distributed systems. I work on infrastructure design and optimization at Structured Reliability. If you have interesting problems and a product that needs to get better, faster, and cheaper at the same time, feel free to get in touch.

I live in the Bay Area. Calendar, GitHub

Academic Interests

My academic interests tend towards computer infrastructure: networking, databases, and operating systems; distributed systems in general and large-scale infrastructure in particular. I am also interested in the systems engineering applications and implications of artificial intelligence.

I like the idea of continuous optimization of engineered systems to discover the optimal design for a particular problem, and spend a lot of time thinking about how to design systems reliable enough to withstand constant tinkering and rearchitecting without becoming unavailable as we search the design space.

Extracurricular Interests

The general theme of my non-academic interests might be classified as examples of 'elegance in mechanical complexity': cars, watches, keyboards, datacenters, near-east architecture, etc.

Outside of engineering my interests include

  • philosophy and metaphysics,
  • history and anthropology,
  • chemistry and biology,
  • neuroscience and pharmacology,
  • sociolinguistics and dialectology,
  • jazz and desert blues,
and generally most other topics as well. I especially like Fermi estimations.

Things I Am Learning or Thinking About

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • How infrastructure should be designed
  • Problems inherent to large-scale systems
  • Practical probability theory
  • Software usability and managing complexity
  • Human Input Devices
  • Technical strategy and tactics
  • Startup strategy and tactics
  • Programming Languages for Language Models
