Materials and Methods: This is an observational-analytical and case-control study conducted on the 27 children (4-12 years old) with ALL who were in the maintenance phase of chemotherapy in the Ahvaz Shafa Hospital, Iran. The participants of the control group, matched in terms of age, gender, and cultural status with the case group, were selected among the healthy children referred to Ahvaz Razi Hospital, Iran. The children received only a clinical dental examination without radiographs. The number of decayed (D), missing (M) and filled (F), and teeth (T) were recorded based on the WHO based DMFT index and without the use of radiography. Then, after radiographic assessment, the stimulated saliva samples were collected from the subjects to assess the salivary Streptococcus mutans counts, salivary Lactobacilli counts, and ...

Even in treatment planning more attention has been give to appearance and esthetic. The purpose of this study was to determin relationship between orthodontic treatment required according to the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) and student’s perception in 11-14 yearolds in Ahwaz. Materials & Methods: This decriptive cross sectional study was performed on 900 students (450 girls, 450 boys). The students that participated in this study were those who did not received any orthodontic treatment before or at the time of the study. Two questionnaires were used, the first one included different DAI criteria and second one included some questions about the students' perception on the appearance of their teeth. The results were analyzed by Chi-Square test and T-test. Results: In 70.9% students DAI score was 1...

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of repetition of oral hygiene instruction in a group of 9 to 10 years old students in the Ahvaz. Subjects and Methods: The students were 364 boys and girls of grades 3 and 4 in the primary school. Before the begging of the teaching program, all the students were examined. Their oral hygiene was verified using the simplified index of the oral health offered by Green–Vermillion (CI-S, DI-S, OHI-S) and gingival health was recorded with the diagnostic standard of ( James, Jackson, Stack and Lawton) in exacting of the teaching program. The students were divided into 4 groups the number of teaching sessions and the period between them were different in these groups: group once every two weeks and totally 6 times, group two: monthly and totally 3 times, group three a single session and group four (control) were not trained at al...

The aim of the present survey was to evaluate the oral health of the young population of Ahwaz, Iran in 2005. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 600 15-year-old students were se-lected randomly. Data was gathered with clinical examination and a questionnaire, collecting data of DMFT of first permanent molars, OHI-S, oral hygiene and nutrition habits, and parents' education. Statistical analysis was performed by descriptive statistics and t-test. Mean DMFT of first permanent molars was 1.84 ± 1.54, with a higher value seen among girls. Mean decayed teeth component was 1.56, followed by filled (0.17) and missing (0.1) components. Higher DMFT values were significantly associated with poor OHI-S score (P = 0.001). The observed oral hygiene status among the 15-year-olds necessitates implementing pre-ventive as well as restorative measure...

The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of two self-etch and the one-bottle adhesive used in pit and fissure sealant with or without saliva contamination. Sixty extracted premolar teeth were assigned to the six groups. Group 1: Acid +saliva +single bond +sealant, Group 2: Acid +single bond +sealant, Group 3: Saliva +S (3) bond +sealant, Group 4: S (3) bond +sealant, Group 5: Saliva +protect bond +sealant, Group 6: Protect bond +sealant. The teeth were thermocycled and immersed in 2% basic fuchsine dye for 24 h, then sectioned and examined with a stereomicroscope under ×40 magnification. The results were evaluated with Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. Group 2 has the lower microleakage scores than Groups 4 and 6. Also, Group 6 has the lower microleakage scores than Group 4, and generally an increase in microleakage was observed in each group related to contamination. The best technique of sealant therapy in saliva contaminated and non- contaminated condition is the use of acid-etching and bonding agent.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of short-term consumption of probiotic yogurt containing bifidobacterium lactis on salivary streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli in students with initial stages of dental caries. Materials and Methods: 66 students (18-30 years old) with initial stages of dental caries were selected in this single blind randomized clinical trial. The subjects were randomly assigned into two groups: intervention group received 300g/d probiotic yogurt, and control group received 300 g/d conventional yogurt for 2 weeks. Unstimulated fasting saliva sample was collected pre- and post-intervention. Bacterial counting was performed for salivary streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli. Salivarius Mitis agar and Rogosa agar were used as culture media for streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli, respectively. Results: The number of streptococcus mutans in saliva was significantly reduced in the intervention group post-intervention (P<0.001); however, it was not changed in the control group (P=0.71). Streptococcus mutans was also significantly lower in the intervention group compared with the control group post-intervention (P<0.001). Although salivary lactobacilli was reduced significantly in both groups post-intervention (P<0.001), this reduction was not significantly greater in the intervention group compared with the control group (P=0.594). Conclusions: It is suggested that consumption of probiotic yogurt may be useful to prevent the progression of dental caries.
