Abstrak : Artikel ini dimaksudkan untuk membahas representasi perilaku budaya etnik Tionghoa dala... more Abstrak : Artikel ini dimaksudkan untuk membahas representasi perilaku budaya etnik Tionghoa dalam novel Indonesia pasca tragedi 1998, dengan fokus perilaku pribadi, sosial dan religius. Pembahasan dilakukan dengan memanfaatkan : (1) prosedur penelitian sosiologi sastra, dan (2) model analisis hermeneutika Paul Recoeur, dengan tahapan pemahaman semantik, reflektif, dan eksistensial. Sumber data artikel ini adalah 5 (lima) novel yang dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling. Keterwakilan novel dan pengarangnya dilihat dari sudut pandang dan konteks obyek penelitian. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif-kualitatif. Analisis data dilakukan berdasarkan analisis kajian budaya , dengan tahapan identifikasi data , klasifikasi data, dan analisis data, serta pemaknaan dan peny impulan. Hasil penelitian ini mengimplikasikan bahwa secara pribadi etnik Tionghoa menghadapi kehidupan yang keras; secara sosial mereka berada dalam kondisi dominatif; dan secara religius mereka menghadapi banyak tantangan. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa : (1) perilaku pribadi etnik Tionghoa direpresentasikan melalui kehidupan pribadi yang keras, (2) perilaku sosial etnik Tionghoa direpresentasikan melalui kehidupan sosial yang dominatif, dan (3) perilaku religius etnik Tionghoa direpresentasikan melalui kehidupan beragama yang penuh tantangan . Through this paper, the author describes the following: (1) Languages ​​used in Lok Baintan Float... more Through this paper, the author describes the following: (1) Languages ​​used in Lok Baintan Floating Market, (2) Language behaviors of sellers in Lok Baintan Floating Market, (3) Typical linguistic elements used in Lok Baitan Floating Market, and (4) Linguistic characteristics that characterize culture in the environment of Lok Baintan Floating Market. From the description of the language usage, the conclusions that can be asked are as follows: Languages ​​and language activities at the Lok Baintan Floating Market Location in this simple research are examined through linguistic perspectives, and it is continued by relating socio-cultural aspects. Thus, the use of the language is also examined in the anthropology of language. Based on the results of data analysis, it was concluded that there is a mutual relationship between language and culture. In certain perspectives, language is one of the seven elements of culture, and in other perspectives culture and its all aspects involve language to accommodate that culture. Banjarese language has accomodated Banjarese culture. The use of Banjarese Language in the domain of buying and selling at Lok Baintan Floating Market is a reflection of Banjarese Culture. Banjarese culture is a code of conduct, including language behavior. Banjarese culture is reflected in the Banjar Language. Banjarese culture is manifested in the speech event in which Banjarese language is used for communication.
Abstract Language is said to be the arbitrary vocal symbol. This implies that language consists o... more Abstract Language is said to be the arbitrary vocal symbol. This implies that language consists of speech sounds (e.g., sounds produced by using speech organs) based on the social agreement or convention. A certain word has a meaning because of the language users have given it. A word and its meaning are the results of social agreement or convention. This article is an attempt to develop the coverage of arbitrariness of a language relating to the concept provided by Ferdinand de Saussure, namely: the relationship between the signifiant and the signifie. The arbitrariness (1) might extend to linguistic features belonging to the particular language, (2) might be examined in the naming of a thing, an animal, or any object and what it symbolizes, (3) lies in the use of the same thing with different words to refer to, (4) might extend to the creation of terms to refer to the same thing, (5) is associated with the grammatical features of languages, (6) is related to creating a “new language’ based on the existing language. This arbitrariness of a language has implications on the language use that relies on relationships of word denotations based on socio-cultural agreements. A language-use is controlled by linguistic etiquette. Linguistic etiquette is something like guidance for language use in a socio-cultural setting. Linguistic principles cover politeness principles and euphemism. These are meant to make the utterances used in social communication and interaction socially polite and acceptable.

If it said that literature is a language in one side, learning literature is, at the same time, learning a language in the other side. English literature is literature written in English language. In this relation, learning English literature is, at the same time, learning English language. If literature talks about human life, by using literary works we can learn and build our social awareness, and at almost the same time we can contribute to nation character building. Ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment. Greg Garrard traces the development of the movement and explores the concepts that have most occupied ecocritics, including: pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, animals, and earth. This paper will answer some questions : (1) how nature is represented in literature? (2) what roles are presented by physical environment in literature, (3) how local wisdom is represented in literature, (4) how metaphors are explored in literature, and (5) what moral teaching is given by literature representing ecological enviroments. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengindentifikasi nilai-nilai kearifan lokal apa saja yang sudah m... more Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengindentifikasi nilai-nilai kearifan lokal apa saja yang sudah masuk dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris tingkat SMPN di Kota Banjarmasin dan untuk mengeksplorasi model pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dalam rangka mempertahankan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal agar peserta didik bersikap positif terhadap pentingnya menjaga nilai-nilai kearifan lokal. Kebermanfaatan penelitian ini setidaknya mencakup dua aspek baik dalam konteks teoritis maupun praktis. Secara teoritis, hasil penelitian ini dapat memberikan sebuah pandangan baru terkait pendekatan dalam menjaga dan mempertahankan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal melalui pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Secara praktis, hasil penelitian inimemberikan sumbangan konkret tentang strategi pembangunan kesadaran menjaga kearifan lokal melalui pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.Studi yang diteliti adalah kajian rencana pelaksanaan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berkearifan lokal tingkat SMPN di Kota Banjarmasin dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif. Populasi penelitian ini adalah guru dan orang tua siswa di semua Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP)yang berada di daerah sungai Banjarmasin. Dengan menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data wawancara dan kuesioner. Teknik analisis yang digunakan adalah analisis isi (content analysis), yaitu suatu analisis terhadap isi yang diperoleh baik dari wawancara maupun kuesioner. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) mengajarkan tentang pentingnya menjaga kebersihan sungai dari sampah dengan cara membuang sampah di tempatnya dan menegur orang lain yang membuang sampah di sungai, budaya hormat dan sopan kepada orang yang lebih tua yang diterapkan melalui tingkah laku dan ucapan, budaya rajin menabung, budaya disiplin dan agamis perlu dijalankan dan (2) model pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang berbasis kearifan lokal telah diterapkan di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Pertama di Kota Banjarmasin dengan pengintegrasian budaya lokal seperti adat istiadat Banjar, berbagai jenis keseian, kewirausahaan, dan keterampilan budaya Banjar yang dimasukkan ke dalam materi dan topik pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris baik melalui media teks maupun video. Penulis menggunakan pendekatan memisis dengan metode penelitian sosiologi sastra. Penelitian sosiologi sastra menunjukkan bahwa peneliti melakukan pembacaan karya sastra secara heuristik dalam proses pengumpulan data, dan melakukan analisis secara hermeneutik, dengan menghubungkaitkan antara fakta imaginatif dan fakta sosial-budaya masyarakat Tionghoa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat Tionghoa memiliki perilaku penghormatan terhadap alam. Alam merupakan bagian tak terpisahkan dari kehidupan manusia.

Learning a foreign language needs a lot of practice and learning. A teacher plays an important role in learning English, especially for the Cerdas Istimewa program. The success of this class depends on the material, media, and techniques used by the English teacher. This research aims to describe the implementation of teaching reading in terms of material, media, and techniques at the fourth semester of Cerdas Istimewa class in SMPN 1 Banjarmasin academic year 2019/2020. This research used qualitative research. The subject of this research is the English teacher at Cerdas Istimewa class. The instruments of this research are observation, interview, and documentation. Based on the research finding, the teacher used material from textbooks and also from other sources such as the internet. The teacher used various media in his teachings such as LCD, pictures, music videos, and film. For the techniques in teaching reading, the teacher used SQ3R, the three-phase technique, and the question and answer relationship. The teacher implemented media based on curriculum 2013, selected the material based on students’ needs, and also from the syllabus of Cerdas Istimewa

In EFL context, considering appropriate technique in teaching pronunciation is a pivotal issue si... more In EFL context, considering appropriate technique in teaching pronunciation is a pivotal issue since it could help students to learn how to pronounce English sounds easy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of tongue twister technique on pronunciation ability of students across different learning styles. This study involved 34 first-year English major students taking Intensive English course at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, one of leading universities in Indonesia. The students in the experimental group were taught by using tongue twister, while those in the control group were taught by using repetition technique. The students were also grouped based on two types of learning styles, namely active and reflective learning styles referring to Felder and Silverman's (1988) learning style model. The findings of the study showed that there was no significant difference in pronunciation ability between the groups. No significant difference was either found in pronunciation ability between students with active learning style and those with reflective learning style. In spite of the insignificant results, tongue twister is considered beneficial by the students as they perceived that practicing tongue twisters cultivated joyful learning and it helped them to improve their pronunciation, fluency, and motivation in learning English pronunciation. Tongue twister practice could complement the use of repetition technique to enhance students' learning experience and learning outcome.
