Boosters - Do's And Don'ts
Permissible Booster Involvement
Boosters may...
- Attend high school and junior college athletics events
- Make on campus contact as permitted, and/or written communications during the prospect's official visit
- Continue established family relationships with friends and neighbors
- Attend, at booster's own initiative, public events (e.g. awards banquet, etc.) where prospects are present
During any of the above activities, a booster may NOT attempt to recruit the prospect or discuss Nanooks athletics program with the prospect and/or his/her parents (or legal guardians). In addition, a booster may inform Alaska's coaching staff of prospects in his/her area by contacting our coaches or send newspaper clippings to our coaches.
Prohibited Booster Involvement
Boosters may NOT...
- Make in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts with a prospect or the prospect's parents (or legal guardians) or relatives
- Write or telephone the prospect or the prospect's relatives or legal guardians
- Contact the prospect's coach, principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate a prospect
- Visit the prospect's institution to pick up film/video or transcripts pertaining to the evaluation of the prospect
- Contact an enrolled student-athlete at another collegiate institution for purposes of transferring to Alaska
- Provide or arrange any inducements for prospects, including, but not limited to cash or loans, promise of future employment, employment of relatives/friends
Only authorized coaches at the University may be involved in the recruitment process of prospective student-athletes.
Contact With Enrolled Student-Athletes At Alaska
It is NOT permissible for a booster to provide to a Nanooks student-athlete, friends or relatives any extra benefit or special arrangement, including, but not limited to:
- Purchase of meals or services at commercial establishments
- Loan of money in any amount
- Special discount, payment arrangement or credit on a purchase or service
- Guarantee of bond
- Use of automobile
- Benefit connected with off-campus housing
- Use of personal property (e.g. boat, summer home, etc.)
- Providing Christmas or birthday gifts
- Selling or giving tickets to an athletics, institution or community event
- Professional services provided at less than normal cost or at no expense
- Pay for expenses incurred by friends or family of an enrolled student-athlete to visit campus or attend an away athletics contest
NCAA rules regarding enrolled student-athletes are in effect at all times, including summer break. At the completion of a student-athlete's final season of eligibility, the student-athlete must abide by NCAA rules until the end of the academic year and/or until he/she is no longer receiving athletics financial aid.
Contact With High School and Junior College Coaches
As a booster, you may NOT...
- Contact coaches for the purpose of evaluating prospects
- Entertain coaches at any location
- Provide tickets or transportation to coaches at any location
- Reimburse coaches for expenses incurred in transporting a prospect to visit the campus
