This study extended prior research by comparing people who had recovered from a major depression (RD) with those who had never been depressed (ND). The RD group significantly exceeded the ND group in the degree to which they reported holding anger in and being afraid to express it. Also, RD participants were more likely to endorse attitudes consistent with silencing the self theory, believing they must hide their feelings to preserve relationships. They were also more likely to have experienced an anger attack. Both silencing the self and a history of anger attacks were significantly correlated with fear of anger expression; future longitudinal or experimental studies are needed to determine whether these variables play a causal role in anger inhibition and in recurrence of depression.

Experimental Ss were told to chose music that either inhibited or (self-handicapping) or facilitated (nonself-handicapping) performance on a test of spatial relations; control Ss were told that no differences existed between the musical tapes. Ss completed affective measures before and after noncontingent failure feedback. Ss who chose to self-handicap on this task were significantly less likely to show decreased positive affect than those who did not. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

It has been hypothesized that this shared variance partly reflects poor discriminant validity, which could be improved by linking item content more closely to diagnostic criteria. We tested this speculation by comparing the Inventory to Diagnose Depression (Zimmerman, Coryell, Corenthal, & Wilson, 1986), developed to correspond with diagnostic criteria for major depression, with the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979) in terms of discriminant validity. These measures correlated more strongly with each other than with anxiety but did not differ in their relations with anxiety.
The Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) model of treatment for trichotillomania (TTM) and other body-... more The Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) model of treatment for trichotillomania (TTM) and other body-focused repetitive behaviors offers a framework for individualized, flexible intervention based on functional analysis. This case report focuses on the treatment of a patient who enrolled in the first randomized clinical trial of ComB for TTM (Carlson et al., 2021) as well as a long-term follow-up of participants from that trial conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic (Flannery et al., in press). Walter (pseudonym) entered the treatment trial at 69, having had TTM since age 17 but not received treatment for it. Walter showed clinically significant improvement in treatment, ultimately abstaining from hair pulling for two years. A single case from a parallel-groups trial cannot support strong conclusions about why his results were favorable, but qualitative review of Walter’s experience in therapy suggested that allowing him a good deal of collaborative input on the specific methods of implementation of ComB principles was helpful. Along with the general literature on patient age as a predictor of therapy outcome, Walter’s case serves as a reminder that older adults, even those with highly chronic clinical conditions, can benefit greatly from psychotherapy.

Postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum psychosis (PPP) can impact mother, infant, and family.... more Postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum psychosis (PPP) can impact mother, infant, and family. Obstetrician-gynecologists (ob-gyns) are often the most frequent medical contact for postpartum women, and so are in a position to identify women needing psychological care. This study assessed ob-gyns' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding diagnosing PPD/PPP. A survey was sent to 400 members of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists who have volunteered to participate in research. Response rate was 56%. Routine screening for PPD and PPP is conducted by 72% and 30% of respondents, respectively. Personal experience (through friend, family, or self) was associated with increased screening. Perceived PPP screening barriers are similar to those found in the PPD literature: time constraints, lack of training, and lack of knowledge of diagnostic criteria. In responding to standardised vignettes, physicians were more likely to over-diagnose, than under diagnose PPD/PPP. This study is the first to provide exploratory data of ob-gyns' knowledge, attitudes, and practice regarding PPD and PPP. Ob-gyns are screening for PPD/PPP, though not universally so. Future research should identify ways to mitigate screening barriers.

Comparing their findings with those of a similar review by Whisman (1993), it seems that progress in this area has been slow. Several suggestions are made for accelerating progress in understanding mechanisms of change in cognitive therapy: (a) more work on measurement development; (b) more efficient use of the existing database; (c) disaggregation of complex treatment packages; and (d) more consistent simultaneous consideration of multiple hypotheses.

ComB provides individualized treatment based on factors triggering and maintaining hair pulling. METHOD Participants (N = 36) were adults (M = 34.08 years old, SD = 12.26) meeting DSM5 criteria for TTM. A majority were female (80%) and Caucasian (75%), whereas 17% were African American and 19% Hispanic/Latinx. In a parallel-group design, participants were randomly assigned to (a) Immediate ComB (12 sessions) or (b) Minimal Attention Control (MAC), followed by delayed ComB after week 12. Follow-up continued through week 38. Primary outcomes were self-report (Massachusetts General Hospital Hair pulling Scale; MGH-HPS) and interviewer-rated (NIMH-Trichotillomania Impact Scale and Trichotillomania Severity Scale; TIS/TSS) TTM symptom severity, as well as diagnosis (Trichotillomania Diagnostic Interview). RESULTS Immediate efficacy of ComB (vs. MAC) was statistically significant (p = .03) for self-reported symptoms, with an effect size d = -.78, but not significant for interviewer-rated symptoms or diagnostic status. Immediate ComB was significantly more likely than MAC (27% vs. 0%) to lead to complete abstinence from hair pulling at week 12. Follow-ups showed good maintenance of effects. CONCLUSIONS Efficacy of ComB was established for self-reported symptoms. Future research is needed to establish whether the lack of more widespread effects stems from limitations of the model or to a need for more extensive therapist training, as secondary analyses suggested stronger results among therapists with more TTM experience.
