Vivian Maria Vasquez is a Professor of Education at American University. Her publications include nine books and numerous book chapters and articles in refereed journals. Prior to coming to AU, Dr. Vasquez taught pre-school and public school for fourteen years. Since then she has held appointive and elective offices in scholarly organizations such as The National Council of Teachers of English, The American Educational Research Association, The Center for Expansion of Language and Thinking, and The Whole Language Umbrella. Her awards include the James N. Britton Award (2005) and the AERA Division B Outstanding Book of the Year Award (2006). Both awards were for her book Negotiating Critical Literacies with Young Children. She was also the first recipient of the AERA Teacher Research SIG Dissertation Award (2004). Barely a month had passed since the first day of school and already four-year-old Hannah's sp... more Barely a month had passed since the first day of school and already four-year-old Hannah's space on the bulletin board was covered with drawings of horses. She had yellow horses, blue horses, and red horses. She had some horses looking to the left and others to the right. She had large horses and small horses. Hannah was a Kindergarten student in a linguistically and cul- turally diverse classroom of 16 four- and five-year- olds in a school located in a middle class neighbor- hood in a community close to the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada. In this column, I reflect on the student research done by Hannah, and her use of art as a tool for engaging in research focused on an issue of importance in her life. I close by talking about the implications of stifling educa- tional policies that make it more and more chal- lenging for teachers to create curricular spaces in which children like Hannah can engage in the kind of transformative learning that resulted from her student r...
Abstract One of the key tenets of critical literacy that I operate from is that it works to disru... more Abstract One of the key tenets of critical literacy that I operate from is that it works to disrupt normalized social practices. In keeping with this tenet, I have crafted this paper in such a way that it somewhat disrupts the normalized format of academic writing by creating an audit trail comprised of artifacts that represent significant moments in my life as a teacher researcher and academic researcher that demonstrate Allan Luke’s influence and why, over 25 years after my first step in the dance of critical literacy, critical literacies continue to have relevance in my work with classroom teachers and young children.
