Micah G . Van der Ryn (Ph.D)
Fepulea'i Micah Van der Ryn (Ph.D.) is an anthropologist, filmmaker, and Health Communications Specialist working to further cross-cultural understanding and appreciation and restore ecological balance, health, healing, and harmony. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the University of Auckland, a Master in Visual Anthropology (MAVA) from the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz (double major in Anthropology and Environmental Studies with Highest Honors). Dr. Van der Ryn was an ethnographic and media specialist at American Samoa Community College's (ASCC) Samoan Studies Institute (SSI) for seventeen years, where he trained students in ethnography and video production and produced films to support Samoan and other Pacific Islander cultural heritage preservation and education. In this context, he was responsible for establishing ASCC'S Ethnographic Media laboratory and archive at SSI, facilitating the distribution of these videos into local classrooms and broadcast on local television, and obtaining grant funds to promote these efforts. Subsequently, Dr. Van der Ryn became a researcher at ASCC's Division of Community and Natural Resources, establishing and developing its Health Communications Research and Media Program (HCRM) where he developed, tested, and piloted evidence-based, culturally appropriate social marketing media interventions to effectively address the epidemic of non-communicable, "lifestyle" related diseases, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, in American Samoa. In 2019 Micah took early retirement from ASCC to move back with his Samoan family to California to help care for his parents and family property. He is now available as a consultant, teacher, and filmmaker to develop projects related to his professional interests and expertise.
