The study comprising a total of 13,765 individuals of both sexes participating in the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) assessed in the second wave (2012-2014). e SB was measured using questions related to sitting time during the week and weekend. e associated factors were assessed by face-to-face interviews, with blocks of questionnaires and anthropometric measurements. A hierarchical ecological model was built with all possible factors associated with SB: sociodemographic environment (age and level of education; economic status); behavioral environment (leisure time physical activity, commuting physical activity, beer consumption, current smoking); and biological environment (overweight, obesity and abdominal obesity). Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using logistic regression. Among men and women, higher ed...

This phenomenon is well described in developed countries where mortality rates are higher for men than women. In this regard, the analysis of mortality patterns by cause contributes to elucidate the determinant factors of the present situation in Brazil and provides indications of some future trends in female mortality. This is especially important due to the fact that in Brazil the social role of women has experienced great changes. This study presents data on mortality from ten capital cities in 1985, showing age-standardized overall and cause-specific mortality rates for five of the main groups of causes by sex. Ratios and differences effect estimators were used. The results revealed that regional patterns are associated with the urban and industrial processes with greater differences by sex in more developed regions. External causes and cardiovascular diseases are the main factors responsible for highe...

In turn, leading a healthy lifestyle has also been associated with a wide range of psychosocial factors. Today, it is known that these differ among men and women. The present article aimed to identify, from a gender-based perspective, the psychosocial factors associated with healthy lifestyles in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) cohort, the largest study concerning adult health conducted in Latin America to date.DesignThis cross-sectional study was conducted using ELSA-Brasil baseline data, collected between 2008 and 2010.SettingSix Brazilian public higher education and research institutions.ParticipantsThe ELSA-Brasil cohort consists of approximately 15 000 employees (8218 women and 6887 men), both currently working and retired.Main outcome measuresThe lifestyle indicator was constructed by summing the sc...
