The Mamluk conquest of Acre, the last castle of Crusaders in the eastern Mediterranean, in 1291 w... more The Mamluk conquest of Acre, the last castle of Crusaders in the eastern Mediterranean, in 1291 was not surprising but created great echoes in the Christian West. From the time of Acre’s capture to the project of Philip VI’s Crusade in 1336, many plans, projects and treatises were inked by a large group of writers ranging from the members of the royal families to merchants, from diplomats to clergy and people of military background in order to recover the Holy Land. At the beginning, these projects targeted the recover of the Holy Land right after the occupation of Egypt -the land of “infidel Muslims”- and Constantinople -the capital of “heretical Christians”. As of the first quarter of 14th century, after Turcoman Maritime Emirates in Western Anatolia started to pose a danger against the interests of Latins in the Aegean region, they turned into the attempts for anti-Turkish league. In this context, in 1334 and 1344, two attacks were carried out by Crusader Naval League on Izmir which was considered to have been the center and the most significant harbour of Aydin Principality’s sea power. In this paper which puts forward the facts and the events in the historical background of the Crusade of Smyrna of 1344 that reflects the shifting of Crusader’s impetus from Holy Land towards the Aegean it is discussed the formation of the naval league in 1343, Humbert of Vienne’s expedition of 1346-7 and the activities of the Christian coalition in the Aegean until the disbanding of the league in 1351.

In this period intensive commercial relations were established between Turcoman maritime begliks of Western Anatolia and Italian city states which played an important role in the Mediterraean trade in accordance with the provisions determined by the agreements. Not only the commercial agreements between Venice, Aydin and Menteshe, but also the notes or letters of Italian merchants that served as a trade handbook shed light on this commercial relations. Thus, the common idea among the historians that the Turks didn’t have any ideas on trade and they filled up their treasures with booty and pillaging raids will have lost its significance in the light of the above mentioned documents. In this article, in which the grain that had an important role in trade between the Turks and Italians during the 13th and the 14th centuries is considered, how the grain trade was organized will be shown in details.
