Both countries strive for global leadership on clean energy technologies, and both are preparing national pledges to reduce or constrain their carbon emissions for the period after 2020. The active pursuit of this policy agenda has implications for the strategic relationship of the world's superpowers, and for the G20 agenda. In this public forum, speakers discussed China's climate, energy and urbanisation policies, the US administration's latest energy and climate policy announcements, both countries' positions going into the post-2020 UN climate negotiations, and strategic implications. The forum comes just ahead of the Australian C20 (or 'Civil Society 20') meetings, and will discuss implications for the G20 agenda.
Is it possible to devise a functioning early warning system for currency crises, and is there a r... more Is it possible to devise a functioning early warning system for currency crises, and is there a role for the analysis of indicators beyond economic fundamentals? In light of the East Asian crisis, the issue is examined both theoretically and empirically. An analytical framework to detect macroeconomic and structural vulnerability as well as changes in the perception of fundamentals is developed, and a range of leading indicators explored. An exemplary early warning system which includes investors' sentiments is applied retrospectively in case studies of the crises in Indonesia and Thailand in 1997, Mexico 1994 and three other Latin American episodes. The paper argues that the monitoring of market sentiments has a place along with the analysis of economic fundamentals, structural and political factors.
