It uses digital screens situated in the public spaces of a venue and combined with live feeds and sensors displays engaging, interactive and personalised content. TILO aims to create a dialogue between the arts organisation, the building and its visitors, and will allows artists to carry out their own interventions. The system will be piloted at FACT in Liverpool, the UK's leading media arts centre. Supported by Nesta, Arts & Humanities Research Council and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council Englan

Sea Breeze draws on extensive research in the building, and the gathered stories and recollections of those who once worked there, from the ticket and ice-cream sellers to the one who locked the doors after the very last show in the seventies, after which the theatre became dark. Research focuses on how a complex creative and participatory based process can be translated and made material in the digital space, how particular technological approaches around projection and architectural mapping can be made available in an open source environment. The artistic project is in receipt of £30K Arts Council Fundin

The project highlights the gap between attitudes to privacy in digital and physical spaces. It investigates whether a Data Use Policy can be acceptable in exchange for real world social settings, and records the attitudes of people as their spoken word becomes a shareable, mineable dataset uniquely identified as a URL. This project is based on discussions with Kyle McDonald and was managed by Joeli Brearley

The purpose of this research is therefore to investigate the extent to which dynamic adjustments in visual hierarchy are able to influence route decisions made by subjects whilst navigating unfamiliar urban spaces with a map. This investigation will be undertaken in the context of visitors to the city of Lancaster, UK, in order to encourage them to explore the city more widely, and discover the many attractions that the city has to offer beyond the ‘usual’ areas that visitors commonly frequent. A mobile application targeted at visitors to the city has been developed featuring a map that is able to adjust visual hierarchies in real-time based upon the GPS-derived location of other users within the city. By encouraging visitors to navigate using this map, we can...

In the higher education context, knowledge exchange is an umbrella term used as a shorthand for x-disciplinary collaboration between academia and business, public and third sector organisations, that delivers innovation. The landscape of knowledge exchange in higher education is complex and moves along the spectrum of research, knowledge transfer and education resulting in a myriad of knowledge exchange practices, involving very diverse mechanisms, objectives, actors and external collaborators, and therefore generating a wide array of value and impacts. This paper reports on research in-progress commissioned to better understand the distinctive value of knowledge exchange activities in the arts and humanities, and in particular to explore how might the value that arts and design knowledge exchange activities deliver to...

We draw on experiences from project work undertaken on the planning system in Liverpool (UK). We discuss the process as is, critique the current limitations in regard to public engagement on planning applications, and develop advice to service designers who want to work within such an existing institutional setup. In particular, we caution service designers to be aware of issues related to open data access, the difficulties in managing expectations of actors, and the importance of understanding one’s own biases. We suggest that more research is required on understanding suitable service design approaches to break up existing institutional practices in urban planning.

Yet, the extent to which contemporary digital media can be used to promote other forms of spatial agency remains a critical issue. Whereas the impact of technology from a macro perspective offers a globalizing and homogenizing image, its role in the production of space at a local scale is less clear (Kirsch 1995). The aim of this study is to argue for digital public spaces as a concrete programme to support the articulation of a third notion of public space that emerges at the interface of physical–digital hybrid spaces (Stikker 2013). The project for digital public spaces is posed as one that pursues enabling citizens’ rights to participation and appropriation (Purcell 2002) of physical–digital hybrid spaces. It is argued that while physical and digital spaces do not stand in opposition, their operational models do not fit seamlessly either. The...
