Title: Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem for Function FieldsSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Combinatorics (math.CO)
Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem states that if a subset $A$ of $k$ integers has a Minkowski sum $A+A$ of size at most $3k-4$, then it must be contained in a short arithmetic progression. We prove a function field analogue that is also a generalisation: it states that if $K$ is a perfect field and if $S\supset K$ is a vector space of dimension $k$ inside an extension $F/K$ in which~$K$ is algebraically closed, and if the $K$-vector space generated by all products of pairs of elements of $S$ has dimension at most $3k-4$, then $K(S)$ is a function field of small genus, and $S$ is of small codimension inside a Riemann-Roch space of $K(S)$.

Title: Binary quadratic forms of odd class numberSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
Let $-D$ be a fundamental discriminant. We express the number of representations of an integer by a positive definite binary quadratic form of discriminant $-D$ with an odd class number $h(-D)$ as a rational linear expression involving the Kronecker symbol $\left(\frac{-D}{.}\right)$ and the Fourier coefficients of certain cusp forms. We prove these cusp forms have eta quotient representations only if $D=23$. This provides, using theta functions, a generalization of a result of F. van der Blij from 1952 for binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-23$ to the case of forms of discriminant $-D$ with odd $h(-D)$. We also study the eta quotient representations of some related theta functions.

Title: A method for verifying the generalized Riemann hypothesisComments: 28 pages, 3 figuresSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
Riemann numerically approximated at least three zeta zeros. According to Edwards, Riemann even took steps to verify that the lowest zero he computed was indeed the first zeta zero. This approach to verification is developed, improved, and generalized to a large class of $L$-functions. Results of numerical calculations demonstrating the efficacy of the method are presented.

Title: On Drinfeld modular curves for SL(2)Comments: 26 pagesSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
We study the Drinfeld modular curves arising from the Hecke congruence subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q[T])$. Using a combinatorial method of Gekeler and Nonnengardt, we obtain a genus formula for these curves. In cases when the genus is one, we compute the Weierstrass equation of the corresponding curve.

Title: Dimension formulas for modular form spaces of rational weights, the classification of eta-quotient characters and an extension of Martin's theoremComments: 86 pages, 3 tables, Programming Language: SageMathSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
We give an explicit formula for dimensions of spaces of rational-weight modular forms whose multiplier systems are induced by eta-quotients of fractional exponents. As the first application, we give series expressions of Fourier coefficients of the $n$-th root of certain infinite $q$-products. As the second application, we extend Yves Martin's list of multiplicative holomorphic eta-quotients of integral weights by first extending the meaning of multiplicativity, then identifying one-dimensional spaces, and finally applying Wohlfahrt's extension of Hecke operators. A table containing $2277$ of such eta-quotients is presented. As a related result, we completely classify the multiplier systems induced by eta-quotients of integral exponents. For instance, there are totally $384$ such multiplier systems on $\Gamma_0(4)$ for any fixed weight. We also provide SageMath programs on checking the theorems and generating the tables.

Title: On Certain Polytopes Associated to Products of Algebraic Integer ConjugatesComments: 15 pagesSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Combinatorics (math.CO)
Let $d>k$ be positive integers. Motivated by an earlier result of Bugeaud and Nguyen, we let $E_{k,d}$ be the set of $(c_1,\ldots,c_k)\in\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}^k$ such that $\vert\alpha_0\vert\vert\alpha_1\vert^{c_1}\cdots\vert\alpha_k\vert^{c_k}\geq 1$ for any algebraic integer $\alpha$ of degree $d$, where we label its Galois conjugates as $\alpha_0,\ldots,\alpha_{d-1}$ with $\vert\alpha_0\vert\geq \vert\alpha_1\vert\geq\cdots \geq \vert\alpha_{d-1}\vert$. First, we give an explicit description of $E_{k,d}$ as a polytope with $2^k$ vertices. Then we prove that for $d>3k$, for every $(c_1,\ldots,c_k)\in E_{k,d}$ and for every $\alpha$ that is not a root of unity, the strict inequality $\vert\alpha_0\vert\vert\alpha_1\vert^{c_1}\cdots\vert\alpha_k\vert^{c_k}>1$ holds. We also provide a quantitative version of this inequality in terms of $d$ and the height of the minimal polynomial of $\alpha$.

Title: A note on transcendence of special values of functions related to modularityComments: 18 pages. To appear in Acta ArithmeticaSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
In this note, we study the arithmetic nature of values of modular functions, meromorphic modular forms and meromorphic quasi-modular forms with respect to arbitrary congruence subgroups, that have algebraic Fourier coefficients. This approach unifies many of the known results, and leads to generalizations of the theorems of Schneider, Nesterenko and others.

Title: Bounds on the $p$-adic valuation of the factorial, hyperfactorial and superfactorialSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
In this article, we investigate the $p$-adic valuation $\nu_p$ of quantities such as the factorial $n!$, the hyperfactorial $H(n)$ or the superfactorial $\mathrm{sf}(n)$. In particular, we obtain simple bounds (both upper and lower) for $\nu_p$, using the Legendre-de Polignac formula. Other iterated quantities such as the Berezin function, are also considered. Beyond their recreational character, such quantities, often related to very large numbers, may find applications for cryptography purposes. Finally, lower and upper bounds for the $p$-adic valuation of Stirling numbers of the first kind and Catalan numbers are briefly discussed.

Title: Rogers-Ramanujan type identities involving double sumsSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
For a given integer $k$, an identity of the following shape is defined as: finite sum of \begin{align*} \sum_{(i_1,\cdots,1_k)\in S}\frac{(-1)^{t(i_1,\cdots,i_k)}q^{Q(i_1,\cdots,i_k)}}{(q^{n_1};q^{n_1})_{i_1}\cdots(q^{n_k};q^{n_k})_{i_k}}=\prod_{(a,n)\in P}(q^a;q^n)_{\infty}^{r(a,n)} \end{align*} as a Rogers-Ramanujan type identities of $index(n_1,n_2,\cdots,n_k)$, where $t(i_1,\cdots,i_k)$ is an integer-valued function, $Q(i_1,\cdots,i_k)$ is a rational polynomials in variables $i_1,\cdots,i_k,n_1,\cdots,n_k$ are positive integers with $gcd(n_1,n_2,\cdots,n_k)=1$, $S$ is a subset of $\mathbb{Z}^k$, $P$ is a finite subset of $\mathbb{Q}^2$ and $r(a,n)$ are integer-valued functions. We construct some Rogers-Ramanujan type identities by using the constant term method.

Title: Strong Hybrid Subconvexity for Twisted Selfdual $\mathrm{GL}_3$ $L$-FunctionsComments: 46 pagesSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
We prove strong hybrid subconvex bounds simultaneously in the $q$ and $t$ aspects for $L$-functions of selfdual $\mathrm{GL}_3$ cusp forms twisted by primitive Dirichlet characters. We additionally prove analogous hybrid subconvex bounds for central values of certain $\mathrm{GL}_3 \times \mathrm{GL}_2$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions. The subconvex bounds that we obtain are strong in the sense that, modulo current knowledge on estimates for the second moment of $\mathrm{GL}_3$ $L$-functions, they are the natural limit of the first moment method pioneered by Li and by Blomer.
The method of proof relies on an explicit $\mathrm{GL}_3 \times \mathrm{GL}_2 \leftrightsquigarrow \mathrm{GL}_4 \times \mathrm{GL}_1$ spectral reciprocity formula, which relates a $\mathrm{GL}_2$ moment of $\mathrm{GL}_3 \times \mathrm{GL}_2$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions to a $\mathrm{GL}_1$ moment of $\mathrm{GL}_4 \times \mathrm{GL}_1$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions. A key additional input is a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the second moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions restricted to a coset, which is of independent interest. - [11] arXiv:2408.00617 [pdf, html, other]

Title: On the Density Hypothesis for the Selberg classSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT)
We prove a general zero density theorem on the Selberg class of functions. The result verifies the Density Hypothesis in the strip when the real part of the variable is at least 0.9 under the assumption that the degree of the function does not exceed 2. In the other cases we obtain a density theorem weaker than the Density Hypothesis.

Title: Algebraic power series and their automatic complexity II: modulo prime powersComments: 43 pages, 1 figure, 2 tablesSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Formal Languages and Automata Theory (cs.FL); Symbolic Computation (cs.SC)
Christol and, independently, Denef and Lipshitz showed that an algebraic sequence of $p$-adic integers (or integers) is $p$-automatic when reduced modulo $p^\alpha$. Previously, the best known bound on the minimal automaton size for such a sequence was doubly exponential in $\alpha$. We improve this bound to the order of $p^{\alpha^3 h d}$, where $h$ and $d$ are the height and degree of the minimal annihilating polynomial. We achieve this bound by showing that all states in the automaton are naturally represented in a new numeration system. This significantly restricts the set of possible states. Since our approach embeds algebraic sequences as diagonals of rational functions, we also obtain bounds more generally for diagonals of multivariate rational functions.

Title: Sequences with InequalitiesSubjects: Combinatorics (math.CO); Number Theory (math.NT)
We consider infinite sequences of positive numbers. The connection between log-concavity and the Bessenrodt--Ono inequality had been in the focus of several papers. This has applications in the white noise distribution theory and combinatorics. We improve a recent result of Benfield and Roy and show that for the sequence of partition numbers $\{p(n)\}$ Nicolas' log-concavity result implies the result of Bessenrodt and Ono towards $p(n) \, p(m) > p(n+m)$.

Title: Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for int-amplified endomorphismComments: 29 pages; comments are welcomeSubjects: Algebraic Geometry (math.AG); Dynamical Systems (math.DS); Number Theory (math.NT)
Let $X$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial klt projective variety admitting an int-amplified endomorphism $f$, i.e., the modulus of any eigenvalue of $f^*|_{\text{NS}(X)}$ is greater than $1$. We prove Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for $f$ and also any other surjective endomorphism of $X$: the first dynamical degree equals the arithmetic degree of any point with Zariski dense orbit. This generalizes an early result of Kawaguchi and Silverman for the polarized $f$ case, i.e., $f^*|_{\text{NS}(X)}$ is diagonalizable with all eigenvalues of the same modulus greater than $1$.

Title: An Exploration of Degeneracy in Abelian Varieties of Fermat TypeComments: 23 pages. This is the version that has been published in Experimental MathematicsJournal-ref: Experimental Mathematics, June 2024Subjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Algebraic Geometry (math.AG)
The term degenerate is used to describe abelian varieties whose Hodge rings contain exceptional cycles -- Hodge cycles that are not generated by divisor classes. We can see the effect of the exceptional cycles on the structure of an abelian variety through its Mumford-Tate group, Hodge group, and Sato-Tate group. In this article we examine degeneracy through these different but related lenses. We specialize to a family of abelian varieties of Fermat type, namely Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of the form $y^2=x^m-1$. We prove that the Jacobian of the curve is degenerate whenever $m$ is an odd, composite integer. We explore the various forms of degeneracy for several examples, each illustrating different phenomena that can occur.

Title: Top-degree rational cohomology in the symplectic group of a number ringComments: 18 pages, 1 figure; v2: corrected typos and improved the expositionSubjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Algebraic Topology (math.AT); Group Theory (math.GR)
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $R = \mathcal{O}_K$. We show that if $R$ is not a principal ideal domain, then the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(R)$ has non-trivial rational cohomology in its virtual cohomological dimension. This demonstrates a sharp contrast to the situation where $R$ is Euclidean. To prove our result, we study the symplectic Steinberg module, i.e. the top-dimensional homology group of the spherical building associated to $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(K)$. We show that this module is not generated by integral apartment classes.

Title: Extensions of the Bloch-P\'olya Theorem on the number of real zeros of polynomials (II)Subjects: Number Theory (math.NT); Classical Analysis and ODEs (math.CA)
We prove that there is an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that for every $$a_0,a_1, \ldots,a_n \in [1,M]\,, \qquad 1 \leq M \leq \frac 14 \exp \left( \frac n9 \right)\,,$$ there are $$b_0,b_1,\ldots,b_n \in \{-1,0,1\}$$ such that the polynomial $\displaystyle{P(z) = \sum_{j=0}^n{b_ja_jz^j}}$ has at least $\displaystyle{c \left( \frac{n}{\log(4M)} \right)^{1/2}-1}$ distinct sign changes in $I_a := (1-2a,1-a)$, where $\displaystyle{a := \left( \frac{\log(4M)}{n} \right)^{1/2} \leq 1/3}$. This improves and extends earlier results of Bloch and Pólya and Erdélyi and, as a special case, recaptures a special case of a more general recent result of Jacob and Nazarov.

Title: The VC-dimension of quadratic residues in finite fieldsComments: 22 pages, 3 figures. Accepted incorporating referee commentsSubjects: Combinatorics (math.CO); Number Theory (math.NT)
We study the Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) dimension of the set of quadratic residues (i.e. squares) in finite fields, $\mathbb F_q$, when considered as a subset of the additive group. We conjecture that as $q \to \infty$, the squares have the maximum possible VC-dimension, viz. $(1+o(1))\log_2 q$. We prove, using the Weil bound for multiplicative character sums, that the VC-dimension is $\geq (\frac{1}{2} + o(1))\log_2 q$. We also provide numerical evidence for our conjectures. The results generalize to multiplicative subgroups $\Gamma \subseteq \mathbb F_q^\times$ of bounded index.

Title: Simple homotopy types of even dimensional manifoldsComments: 54 pages. Sections 8-12 have been removed and will be posted as a separate articleSubjects: Algebraic Topology (math.AT); Geometric Topology (math.GT); K-Theory and Homology (math.KT); Number Theory (math.NT)
Given a closed $n$-manifold, we consider the set of simple homotopy types of $n$-manifolds within its homotopy type, called its simple homotopy manifold set. We characterise it in terms of algebraic $K$-theory, the surgery obstruction map, and the homotopy automorphisms of the manifold. We use this to construct the first examples, for all $n \ge 4$ even, of closed $n$-manifolds that are homotopy equivalent but not simple homotopy equivalent. In fact, we construct infinite families with pairwise the same properties, and our examples can be taken to be smooth for $n \geq 6$.
Our key examples are homotopy equivalent to the product of a circle and a lens space. We analyse the simple homotopy manifold sets of these manifolds, determining exactly when they are trivial, finite, and infinite, and investigating their asymptotic behaviour. The proofs involve integral representation theory and class numbers of cyclotomic fields. We also compare with the relation of $h$-cobordism, and produce similar detailed quantitative descriptions of the manifold sets that arise.
