The probabilities for gamma-ray and particle emission as a function of the excitation energy of a decaying nucleus are valuable observables for constraining the ingredients of the models that describe the de-excitation of nuclei near the particle emission threshold. These models are essential in nuclear astrophysics and applications. In this work, we have for the first time simultaneously measured the gamma-ray and neutron emission probabilities of 208Pb. The measurement was performed in inverse kinematics at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) of the GSI/FAIR facility, where a 208Pb beam interacted through the 208Pb(p,p') reaction with a hydrogen gas jet target. Instead of detecting the gamma-rays and neutrons emitted by 208Pb, we detected the heavy beam-like residues produced after gamma and neutron emission. These heavy residues were fully separated by a dipole magnet of the ESR and were detected with outstanding efficiencies. The comparison of the measured probabilities with model calculations has allowed us to test different descriptions of the gamma-ray strength function and the nuclear level density available in the literature.

The Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer (CPT) has conducted precision mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclides from the CAlifornia Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) of the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) facility at Argonne National Laboratory for over a decade, first using Time-Of-Flight Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance (TOF-ICR) and later using Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance (PI-ICR) techniques. Here we give an overview of the CPT system as it was operated for PI-ICR measurements at CARIBU for over half a decade, along with some recently studied systematic effects.

Title: Imaging the Wakes of Jets with Energy-Energy-Energy CorrelatorsComments: 35 pages, 19 glamorous figures, 2 practical appendicesSubjects: High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Theory (hep-th); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); Nuclear Theory (nucl-th)
As the partons in a jet propagate through the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in a heavy-ion collision, they lose energy to, kick, and are kicked by the medium. The resulting modifications to the parton shower encode information about the microscopic nature of QGP. The momentum and energy lost by the parton shower are gained by the medium and, since QGP is a strongly coupled liquid, this means that the jet excites a wake in the droplet of QGP. After freezeout, this wake becomes soft hadrons with net momentum in the jet direction meaning that reconstructed jets include hadrons originating from both the modified parton shower and its wake. This makes it challenging to find an unambiguous experimental view of the response of a droplet of QGP to a jet. Recent years have seen significant advances in the understanding of the substructure of jets using correlation functions of the energy flux operator. So far, such studies have focused primarily on the two-point correlator, which serves to identify the angular scale of the underlying dynamics. Higher-point correlators hold the promise of mapping out the dynamics themselves. We perform the first study of the shape-dependent three-point energy-energy-energy correlator in heavy-ion collisions. Using the Hybrid Model to simulate the interactions of high energy jets with QGP, we show that hadrons originating from wakes are the dominant contribution to the three-point correlator in the regime where the three points are well-separated in angle, forming a roughly equilateral triangle. This equilateral region of the correlator is far from the region populated by collinear vacuum emissions, making it a canvas on which jet wakes can be imaged. Our work is a key step towards the systematic use of energy correlators to image and unravel the dynamical response of a droplet of QGP to a passing jet, and motivates many experimental and theoretical studies.

Title: Investigating the Event-Shape Methods in Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Relativistic Heavy Ion CollisionsComments: 20 pages, 20 figuresSubjects: Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability (physics.data-an); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); Nuclear Theory (nucl-th)
Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is a phenomenon in which electric charge is separated by a strong magnetic field from local domains of chirality imbalance and parity violation in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The CME-sensitive observable, charge-dependent three-point azimuthal correlator $\Delta\gamma$, is contaminated by a major physics background proportional to the particle's elliptic anisotropy $v_2$. Event-shape engineering (ESE) binning events in dynamical fluctuations of $v_2$ and event-shape selection (ESS) binning events in statistical fluctuations of $v_2$ are two methods to search for the CME by projecting $\Delta\gamma$ to the $v_2=0$ intercept. We conduct a systematic study of these two methods using physics models as well as toy model simulations. It is observed that the ESE method requires significantly more statistics than the ESS method to achieve the same statistical precision of the intercept. It is found that the intercept from the ESS method depends on the details of the event content, such as the mixtures of background contributing sources, and thus is not a clean measure of the CME.

This paper reports measurements of two-pion Bose-Einstein (HBT) correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150$A\,\mbox{GeV}/\textit{c}$ by the $\mbox{NA61/SHINE}$ experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a Lévy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the Lévy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the Lévy exponent $\alpha$ is approximately constant as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ , and far from both the Gaussian case of $\alpha = 2$ or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $\alpha = 0.5$. The radius scale parameter $R$ shows a slight decrease in $m_{\rm{T}}$, which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $\lambda$ as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ was observed, different from measurement results at RHIC.

Title: Femtoscopy analysis in small systems at NA61/SHINEBarnabas Porfy (for the NA61/SHINE Collaboration)Comments: 5 pages, 5 figures, proceedings of the the XXXth International Conference on Ultra-relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (Quark Matter 2023), Houston, Texas, United States of America, September 3 - 9, 2023, submitted to European Physics JournalJournal-ref: EPJ Web of Conferences 296, 06004 (2024)Subjects: Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex)
Recent measurements of femtoscopic correlations at NA61/SHINE unravel that the shape of the particle emitting source is not Gaussian. The measurements are based on Lévy-stable symmetric sources, and we discuss the average pair transverse mass dependence of the source parameters. One of the parameters, the Lévy exponent $\alpha$, is of particular importance. It describes the shape of the source, which, in the vicinity of the critical point of the QCD phase diagram, may be related to the critical exponent $\eta$. Its measurement hence may contribute to the search for and characterization of the critical point of the phase diagram.
