Tilt-to-length (TTL) coupling, caused by the jitter of test masses or satellites, is a significant noise source in space-based gravitational wave detection. Calibrating and suppressing TTL coupling noise at the sub-nanometer level is essential. One main challenge in current ground-based TTL coupling testing is the residual translational movement of the tilt actuator. This paper introduces the development of an advanced pure tilt actuator (APTA) specifically designed for testing TTL coupling. The APTA provides precise tilt motion and is monitored by a four-beam interferometer, which measures the displacement of attached array pyramids. We present a detailed theoretical model and experimental setup. Experimental results demonstrate that this optical test bed, equipped with the APTA, can achieve subnanometer-level TTL coupling calibration. In addition, a typical heterodyne interferometer was tested using the APTA test bed. Comparative testing demonstrated that the imaging system is capable of effectively suppressing TTL coupling errors. The TTL coupling coefficients were reduced from over plus-minus 30 micrometers per radian to within plus-minus 5 micrometers per radian across a range of plus-minus 200 microradians, meeting the preliminary requirements for the TianQin mission. This APTA test platform has the potential to be widely utilized for ground-based TTL coupling inspection.

Low-luminosity AGNs with low-mass black holes (BHs) in the early universe are fundamental to understanding the BH growth and their co-evolution with the host galaxies. Utilizing JWST NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS), we perform a systematic search for broad-line ${\rm Hα}$ emitters (BHAEs) at $z\approx 4-5$ in 25 fields of the ASPIRE (A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era) project, covering a total area of 275 arcmin$^2$. We identify 16 BHAEs with FWHM of the broad components spanning from $\sim$ 1000 km s$^{-1}$ to 3000 km s$^{-1}$. Assuming the broad linewidths arise due to Doppler broadening around BHs, the implied BH masses range from $10^7$ to $10^{8}~M_\odot$, with broad ${\rm Hα}$-converted bolometric luminosity of $10^{44.5}-10^{45.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and Eddington ratios of $0.07-0.47$. The spatially extended structure of the F200W stacked image may trace the stellar light from the host galaxies. The ${\rm Hα}$ luminosity function indicates an increasing AGN fraction towards the higher ${\rm Hα}$ luminosities. We find possible evidence for clustering of BHAEs: two sources are at the same redshift with a projected separation of 519 kpc; one BHAE appears as a composite system residing in an overdense region with three close companion ${\rm Hα}$ emitters. Three BHAEs exhibit blueshifted absorption troughs indicative of the presence of high-column-density gas. We find the broad-line and photometrically selected BHAE samples exhibit different distributions in the optical continuum slopes, which can be attributed to their different selection methods. The ASPIRE broad-line ${\rm Hα}$ sample provides a good database for future studies of faint AGN populations at high redshift.

We update the HI surface density measurements for a subset of 17 THINGS galaxies by dealing with the short-spacing problem of the original VLA HI images. It is the same sample that Bigiel et al. (2010) used to study the relation between HI surface densities and star formation rate surface densities in galaxy outer disks, which are beyond the optical radius r25. For ten galaxies, the update is based on combining original THINGS VLA HI images with HI images taken by the single-dish FAST in the FEASTS program. The median increment of HI surface densities in outer disks is 0.15 to 0.4 dex at a given new HI surface density. Several galaxies change significantly in the shape of radial profiles HI surface densities, and seven galaxies are now more than 1-$σ$ below the HI size-mass relation. We update the HI star formation laws in outer disks. The median relation between HI surface densities and star formation rate surface densities based on pixelwise measurements shifts downward by around 0.15 dex because the HI surface density values shift rightward, and the scatter increases significantly. The scatter of the relation, indicating the star forming efficiency, exhibits a much stronger positive correlation with the stellar mass surface density than before. Thus, detecting the previously missed, diffuse HI due to short-spacing problem of the VLA observation is important in revealing the true condition and variation of star formation possibly regulated by stellar feedbacks in localized environment of outer disks.

We introduce our project, AGNSTRONG (Active Galactic Nuclei and STaR fOrmation in Nearby Galaxies). Our research goals encompass investigating the kinematic properties of ionized and molecular gas outflows, understanding the impact of AGN feedback, and exploring the coevolution dynamics between AGN strength activity and star formation activity. We aim to conduct a thorough analysis to determine whether there is an increase or suppression in SFRs among targets with and without powerful relativistic jets. Our sample consists of 35 nearby AGNs with and without powerful relativistic jet detections. Utilizing sub-millimeter (sub-mm) continuum observations at 450 μm and 850 μm from SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, we determine star-formation rates (SFRs) for our sources using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting models. Additionally, we employ high-quality, spatially resolved spectra from UV-optical to near-infrared bands obtained with the Double Spectrograph and Triple Spectrograph mounted on the 200-inch Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory to study their multiphase gas outflow properties. This paper presents an overview of our sample selection methodology, research strategy, and initial results of our project. We find that the SFRs determined without including the sub-mm data in the SED fitting are overestimated by approximately 0.08 dex compared to those estimated with the inclusion of sub-mm data. Additionally, we compare the estimated SFRs in our work with those traced by the 4000Å break, as provided by the MPA-JHU catalog. We find that our determined SFRs are systematically higher than those traced by the 4000Å break. Finally, we outline our future research plans.

We present a statistical study of the properties of diffuse HI in ten nearby galaxies, comparing the HI detected by the single-dish telescope FAST (FEASTS program) and the interferometer VLA (THINGS program), respectively. The THINGS' observation missed HI with a median of 23% due to the short-spacing problem of interferometry and limited sensitivity. We extract the diffuse HI by subtracting the dense HI, which is obtained from the THINGS data with a uniform flux-density threshold, from the total HI detected by FAST. Among the sample, the median diffuse-HI fraction is 34%, and more diffuse HI is found in galaxies exhibiting more prominent tidal-interaction signatures. The diffuse HI we detected seems to be distributed in disk-like layers within a typical thickness of $1\,\text{kpc}$, different from the more halo-like diffuse HI detected around NGC 4631 in a previous study. Most of the diffuse HI is cospatial with the dense HI and has a typical column density of $10^{17.7}$-$10^{20.1}\,\text{cm}^{-2}$. The diffuse and dense HI exhibits a similar rotational motion, but the former lags by a median of 25% in at least the inner disks, and its velocity dispersions are typically twice as high. Based on a simplified estimation of circum-galactic medium properties and assuming pressure equilibrium, the volume density of diffuse HI appears to be constant within each individual galaxy, implying its role as a cooling interface. Comparing with existing models, these results are consistent with a possible link between tidal interactions, the formation of diffuse HI, and gas accretion.

Strong gravitational magnification by massive galaxy clusters enable us to detect faint background sources, resolve their detailed internal structures, and in the most extreme cases identify and study individual stars in distant galaxies. Highly magnified individual stars allow for a wide range of applications, including studies of stellar populations in distant galaxies and constraining small-scale dark matter structures. However, these applications have been hampered by the small number of events observed, as typically one or a few stars are identified from each distant galaxy. Here, we report the discovery of 46 significant microlensed stars in a single strongly-lensed high-redshift galaxy behind the Abell 370 cluster at redshift of 0.725 when the Universe was half of its current age (dubbed the ``Dragon arc''), based on two observations separated by one year with the James Webb Space Telescope ({\it JWST}). These events are mostly found near the expected lensing critical curves, suggesting that these are magnified individual stars that appear as transients from intracluster stellar microlenses. Through multi-wavelength photometry and colors, we constrain stellar types and find that many of them are consistent with red giants/supergiants magnified by factors of thousands. This finding reveals an unprecedented high occurrence of microlensing events in the Dragon arc, and proves that {\it JWST}'s time-domain observations open up the possibility of conducting statistical studies of high-redshift stars and subgalactic scale perturbations in the lensing dark matter field.

The formation of jets in black hole accretion systems is a long-standing problem. It has been proposed that a jet can be formed by extracting the rotation energy of the black hole ("BZ-jet") or the accretion flow ("disk-jet"). While both models can produce collimated relativistic outflows, neither has successfully explained the observed jet morphology. By employing general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, and considering nonthermal electrons accelerated by magnetic reconnection that is likely driven by magnetic eruption in the underlying accretion flow, we obtain images by radiative transfer calculations and compared them to millimeter observations of the jet in M87. We find that the BZ-jet originating from a magnetically arrested disk around a high-spin black hole can well reproduce the jet morphology, including its width and limb-brightening feature.

The cosmic distance duality relation (CDDR), expressed as DL(z) = (1 + z)2DA(z), plays an important role in modern cosmology. In this paper, we propose a new method of testing CDDR using strongly lensed gravitational wave (SLGW) signals. Under the geometric optics approximation, we calculate the gravitational lens effects of two lens models, the point mass and singular isothermal sphere. We use functions of η1(z) = 1 + η0z and η2(z) = 1 + η0z=(1 + z) to parameterize the deviation of CDDR. By reparameterizing the SLGW waveform with CDDR and the distance-redshift relation, we include the deviation parameters η0 of CDDR as waveform parameters. We evaluate the ability of this method by calculating the parameter estimation of simulated SLGW signals from massive binary black holes. We apply the Fisher information matrix and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods to calculate parameter estimation. We find that with only one SLGW signal, the measurement precision of η0 can reach a considerable level of 0.5-1.3% for η1(z) and 1.1-2.6% for η2(z), depending on the lens model and parameters.

We characterize the multiphase circumgalactic medium and galaxy properties at z = 6.0-6.5 in four quasar fields from the James Webb Space Telescope A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE) program. We use the Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectra of quasar J0305-3150 to identify one new metal absorber at z = 6.2713 with multiple transitions (OI, MgI, FeII and CII). They are combined with the published absorbing systems in Davies et al. (2023a) at the same redshift range to form of a sample of nine metal absorbers at z = 6.03 to 6.49. We identify eight galaxies within 1000 km s$^{-1}$ and 350 kpc around the absorbing gas from the ASPIRE spectroscopic data, with their redshifts secured by [OIII]($λλ$4959, 5007) doublets and H$β$ emission lines. Our spectral energy distribution fitting indicates that the absorbing galaxies have stellar mass ranging from 10$^{7.2}$ to 10$^{8.8}M_{\odot}$ and metallicity between 0.02 and 0.4 solar. Notably, the z = 6.2713 system in the J0305-3150 field resides in a galaxy overdensity region, which contains two (tentatively) merging galaxies within 350 kpc and seven galaxies within 1 Mpc. We measure the relative abundances of $α$ elements to iron ([$α$/Fe]) and find that the CGM gas in the most overdense region exhibits a lower [$α$/Fe] ratio. Our modeling of the galaxy's chemical abundance favors a top-heavy stellar initial mass function, and hints that we may be witnessing the contribution of the first generation Population III stars to the CGM at the end of reionization epoch.

The EDGE-CALIFA survey provides spatially resolved optical integral field unit (IFU) and CO spectroscopy for 125 galaxies selected from the CALIFA Data Release 3 sample. The Extragalactic Database for Galaxy Evolution (EDGE) presents the spatially resolved products of the survey as pixel tables that reduce the oversampling in the original images and facilitate comparison of pixels from different images. By joining these pixel tables to lower dimensional tables that provide radial profiles, integrated spectra, or global properties, it is possible to investigate the dependence of local conditions on large-scale properties. The database is freely accessible and has been utilized in several publications. We illustrate the use of this database and highlight the effects of CO upper limits on the inferred slopes of the local scaling relations between stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and H$_2$ surface densities. We find that the correlation between H$_2$ and SFR surface density is the tightest among the three relations.

JWST provides an unprecedented opportunity for unbiased surveys of H$α$-emitting galaxies at $z>4$ with the NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS). In this work, we present a census of Ly$α$ escape fraction ($f_{esc, Lyα}$) of 165 star-forming galaxies at $z=4.9-6.3$ using their H$α$ emission directly measured from FRESCO NIRCam/WFSS data. We search for Ly$α$ emission of each H$α$-emitting galaxy in VLT/MUSE data. The overall $f_{esc, Lyα}$ measured by stacking is $f_{esc, Lyα}$ is $0.090\pm0.006$. We find that $f_{esc, Lyα}$ displays a strong dependence on the observed UV slope ($β_{\rm obs}$) and E(B-V), such that the bluest galaxies ($β_{\rm obs}\sim-2.5$) have the largest escape fractions ($f_{\rm esc, Lyα}\approx0.6$), indicative of the crucial role of dust and gas in modulating the escape of Ly$α$ photons. $f_{esc, Lyα}$ is less well related to other parameters, including the UV luminosity and stellar mass, and the variation in $f_{esc, Lyα}$ with them can be explained by their underlying coupling with E(B-V) or $β_{\rm obs}$. Our results suggest a tentative decline in $f_{esc, Lyα}$ at $z\gtrsim 5$, implying increasing intergalactic medium attenuation towards higher redshift. Furthermore, the dependence of $f_{esc, Lyα}$ on $β_{\rm obs}$ is proportional to that of the ionizing photon escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc, LyC}$), indicating the escape of Ly$α$ and ionizing photon may be regulated by similar physical processes. With $f_{esc, Lyα}$ as a proxy to $f_{\rm esc, LyC}$, we infer that UV-faint ($M_{\rm UV}>-16$) galaxies contribute $>70\%$ of the total ionizing emissivity at $z=5-6$. If these relations hold during the epoch of reionization, UV-faint galaxies can contribute the majority of UV photon budget to reionize the Universe.

With JWST imaging, we determine the UV continua with $M_{\rm UV}$ ranging from ${-}20.5$ to ${-}18.5$ mag. The UV slopes have a median value of $β\approx-2.35$, and the steepest slope can reach $β<-3$. Under an excellent spatial resolution of JWST, we identify three out of the sample as potential merging/interacting systems. The 14 LAEs (and their components) are compact in morphology residing substantially below the mass-size relation of high-$z$ galaxies. We further investigate the stellar mass ($M_*$) and star-formation rates (SFRs). Most of the LAEs lie on the SFR-$M_*$ main-sequence relation while two of them featured as "little red dots" likely host active galactic nuclei (AGN), implying a ${\sim}10\%$ AGN fraction. Moreover, we reveal that a new correlation may exist between Ly$α$ equivalent width and the offset between Ly$α$ and UV emission ($Δd_{\rm Lyα}$) with a median $Δd_{\rm Lyα} \sim 1$ kpc. This could be explained by Ly$α$ radiative transfer process in both ISM and CGM. The results usher a new era of detailed analysis on high-$z$ LAEs with the JWST capability.

The discovery is based on our new grism dynamical modeling methodology for JWST NIRCam slitless spectroscopy, using the data from ``Median-band Astrophysics with the Grism of NIRCam in Frontier Fields'' (MAGNIF), a JWST Cycle-2 program. The [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission line morphology in grism data shows velocity offsets compared to the F480M direct imaging, suggestive of rotation. Assuming a geometrically thin disk model, we constrain the rotation velocity of $v_{\rm rot}=58^{+53}_{-35}$ km s$^{-1}$ via forward modeling of the two-dimensional (2D) spectrum. We obtain the kinematic ratio of $v_{\rm rot}/σ_v=1.6^{+1.9}_{-0.9}$, where $σ_v$ is the velocity dispersion, in line with a quasi-stable thin disk. The resulting dynamical mass is estimated to be $\log(M_{\rm dyn}/M_{\odot})=8.4^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$. If the rotation confirmed, our discovery suggests that rotating gaseous disks may have already existed within 600 million years after Big Bang.

The launch of ${\it JWST}$ opens a new window for studying the connection between metal-line absorbers and galaxies at the end of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Previous studies have detected absorber-galaxy pairs in limited quantities through ground-based observations. To enhance our understanding of the relationship between absorbers and their host galaxies at $z>5$, we utilized the NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) to search for absorber-associated galaxies by detecting their rest-frame optical emission lines (e.g., [OIII] + H$β$). We report the discovery of a MgII-associated galaxy at $z=5.428$ using data from the ${\it JWST}$ ASPIRE program. The MgII absorber is detected on the spectrum of quasar J0305--3150 with a rest-frame equivalent width of 0.74$\mathring{A}$. The associated galaxy has an [OIII] luminosity of $10^{42.5}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$ with an impact parameter of 24.9 proper kiloparsecs (pkpc). The joint ${\it HST}$-${\it JWST}$ spectral energy distribution (SED) implies a stellar mass and star-formation rate of ${\rm M_* \approx 10^{8.8}}$ ${\rm M_{\odot}}$, ${\rm SFR}\approx 10\ {\rm M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}}$. Its [OIII] equivalent width and stellar mass are typical of [OIII] emitters at this redshift. Furthermore, connecting the outflow starting time to the SED-derived stellar age, the outflow velocity of this galaxy is $\sim300\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, consistent with theoretical expectations. We identified six additional [OIII] emitters with impact parameters of up to $\sim300$ pkpc at similar redshifts ($|dv|<1000\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$). The observed number is consistent with that in cosmological simulations. This pilot study suggests that systematically investigating the absorber-galaxy connection within the ASPIRE program will provide insights into the metal-enrichment history in the early universe.

We report on the discovery of two potential polar ring galaxies (PRGs) in the WALLABY Pilot Data Release 1 (PDR1). These untargetted detections, cross-matched to NGC 4632 and NGC 6156, are some of the first galaxies where the Hi observations show two distinct components. We used the iDaVIE virtual reality software to separate the anomalous gas from the galactic gas and find that the anomalous gas comprises ~ 50% of the total H i content of both systems. We have generated plausible 3D kinematic models for each galaxy assuming that the rings are circular and inclined at 90 degrees to the galaxy bodies. These models show that the data are consistent with PRGs, but do not definitively prove that the galaxies are PRGs. By projecting these models at different combinations of main disk inclinations, ring orientations, and angular resolutions in mock datacubes, we have further investigated the detectability of similar PRGs in WALLABY. Assuming that these galaxies are indeed PRGs, the detectability fraction, combined with the size distribution of WALLABY PDR1 galaxies, implies an incidence rate of ~ 1% - 3%. If this rate holds true, the WALLABY survey will detect hundreds of new polar ring galaxies.

The Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST) is a dedicated time-domain multi-band ($u$, $g$, $r$, $i$, and $z$) photometric survey facility under construction. In this paper, we present a preliminary study that assesses the quality of photometric redshifts based on WFST by utilizing mock observations derived with the galaxy catalog in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field. We apply the template fitting technique to estimate photometric redshifts by using the ZEBRA photometric-redshift code and adopting a modified set of adaptive templates. We evaluate the bias (median relative offset between the output photometric redshifts and input redshifts), normalized median absolute deviation ($σ_{\rm NMAD}$) and outlier fraction ($f_{\rm outlier}$) of photometric redshifts in two typical WFST observational cases, the single 30-second exposure observations (hereafter shallow mode) and co-added 50-minute exposure observations (hereafter deep mode). We find bias$\la0.006$, $σ_{\rm NMAD}\la0.03$, and $f_{\rm outlier}\la5\%$ in the shallow mode and bias$\approx 0.005$, $σ_{\rm NMAD}\approx 0.06$, and $f_{\rm outlier}\approx 17\%$--$27\%$ in the deep mode, respectively, under various lunar phases. Combining the WFST mock observational data with that from the upcoming CSST and Euclid surveys, we demonstrate that the $z_{\rm phot}$ results can be significantly improved, with $f_{\rm outlier}\approx 1\%$ and $σ_{\rm NMAD}\approx 0.02$.

The Merian survey is mapping $\sim$ 850 degrees$^2$ of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Survey Program (HSC-SSP) wide layer with two medium-band filters on the 4-meter Victor M. Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, with the goal of carrying the first high signal-to-noise (S/N) measurements of weak gravitational lensing around dwarf galaxies. This paper presents the design of the Merian filter set: N708 ($λ_c = 7080 \unicode{x212B}$, $Δλ= 275\unicode{x212B}$) and N540 ($λ_c = 5400\unicode{x212B}$, $Δλ= 210\unicode{x212B}$). The central wavelengths and filter widths of N708 and N540 were designed to detect the $\rm Hα$ and $\rm [OIII]$ emission lines of galaxies in the mass range $8<\rm \log M_*/M_\odot<9$ by comparing Merian fluxes with HSC broad-band fluxes. Our filter design takes into account the weak lensing S/N and photometric redshift performance. Our simulations predict that Merian will yield a sample of $\sim$ 85,000 star-forming dwarf galaxies with a photometric redshift accuracy of $σ_{Δz/(1+z)}\sim 0.01$ and an outlier fraction of $η=2.8\%$ over the redshift range $0.058<z<0.10$. With 60 full nights on the Blanco/Dark Energy Camera (DECam), the Merian survey is predicted to measure the average weak lensing profile around dwarf galaxies with lensing $\rm S/N \sim 32$ within $r<0.5$ Mpc and lensing $\rm S/N \sim 90$ within $r<1.0$ Mpc. This unprecedented sample of star-forming dwarf galaxies will allow for studies of the interplay between dark matter and stellar feedback and their roles in the evolution of dwarf galaxies.

The measurement of the Hubble constant $H_0$ plays an important role in the study of cosmology. In this letter, we propose a new method to constrain the Hubble constant using the strongly lensed gravitational wave (GW) signals. By reparameterizing the waveform, we find that the lensed waveform is sensitive to the $H_0$. Assuming the scenario that no electromagnetic counterpart of the GW source can be identified, our method can still give meaningful constraints on the $H_0$ with the information of the lens redshift. We then apply Fisher information matrix and Markov Chain Monte Carlo to evaluate the potential of this method. For the space-based GW detector, TianQin, the $H_0$ can be constrained within a relative error of $\sim$ 0.3-2\%, using a single strongly lensed GW event. Precision varies according to different levels of electromagnetic information.

We present the first results from the JWST ASPIRE program (A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era). This program represents an imaging and spectroscopic survey of 25 reionization-era quasars and their environments by utilizing the unprecedented capabilities of NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. ASPIRE will deliver the largest ($\sim280~{\rm arcmin}^2$) galaxy redshift survey at 3-4 $μ$m among JWST Cycle-1 programs and provide extensive legacy values for studying the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs), the assembly of galaxies, early metal enrichment, and cosmic reionization. In this first ASPIRE paper, we report the discovery of a filamentary structure traced by the luminous quasar J0305-3150 and ten [OIII] emitters at $z=6.6$. This structure has a 3D galaxy overdensity of $δ_{\rm gal}=12.6$ over 637 cMpc$^3$, one of the most overdense structures known in the early universe, and could eventually evolve into a massive galaxy cluster. Together with existing VLT/MUSE and ALMA observations of this field, our JWST observations reveal that J0305-3150 traces a complex environment where both UV-bright and dusty galaxies are present, and indicate that the early evolution of galaxies around the quasar is not simultaneous. In addition, we discovered 31 [OIII] emitters in this field at other redshifts, $5.3<z<6.7$, with half of them situated at $z\sim5.4$ and $z\sim6.2$. This indicates that star-forming galaxies, such as [OIII] emitters, are generally clustered at high redshifts. These discoveries demonstrate the unparalleled redshift survey capabilities of NIRCam WFSS and the potential of the full ASPIRE survey dataset.

Combining new HI data from a synergetic survey of ASKAP WALLABY and FAST with the ALFALFA data, we study the effect of ram pressure and tidal interactions in the NGC 4636 group. We develop two parameters to quantify and disentangle these two effects on gas stripping in HI-bearing galaxies: the strength of external forces at the optical-disk edge, and the outside-in extents of HI-disk stripping. We find that gas stripping is widespread in this group, affecting 80% of HI-detected non-merging galaxies, and that 41% are experiencing both types of stripping. Among the galaxies experiencing both effects, the two types of strengths are independent, while two HI-stripping extents moderately anticorrelate with each other. Both strengths are correlated with HI-disk shrinkage. The tidal strength is related to a rather uniform reddening of low-mass galaxies ($M_*<10^9\,\text{M}_\odot$) when tidal stripping is the dominating effect. In contrast, ram pressure is not clearly linked to the color-changing patterns of galaxies in the group. Combining these two stripping extents, we estimate the total stripping extent, and put forward an empirical model that can describe the decrease of HI richness as galaxies fall toward the group center. The stripping timescale we derived decreases with distance to the center, from $\mathord{\sim}1\,\text{Gyr}$ beyond $R_{200}$ to $\mathord{\lesssim}10\,\text{Myr}$ near the center. Gas-depletion happens $\mathord{\sim}3\,\text{Gyr}$ since crossing $2R_{200}$ for HI-rich galaxies, but much quicker for HI-poor ones. Our results quantify in a physically motivated way the details and processes of environmental-effects-driven galaxy evolution, and might assist in analyzing hydrodynamic simulations in an observational way.

When gravitational waves (GWs) pass by a massive object on its way to Earth, a strong gravitational lensing effect will happen. Thus, the GW signal will be amplified, deflected, and delayed in time. Through analyzing the lensed GW waveform, physical properties of the lens can be inferred. On the other hand, neglecting lensing effects in the analysis of GW data may induce systematic errors in the estimating of source parameters. As a space-borne GW detector, TianQin will be launched in the 2030s. It is expected to detect dozens of mergers of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) as far as z=15 and thus will have high probability to detect at least one lensed event during the mission lifetime. In this article, we discuss the capability of TianQin to detect lensed MBHB signals.Three lens models are considered in this work: the point mass model, the singular isothermal sphere (SIS) model, and the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) model. The sensitive frequency band for space-borne GW detectors is around millihertz, and the corresponding GW wavelength could be comparable to the lens gravitational length scale, which requires us to account for wave diffraction effects. In calculating lensed waveforms, we adopt the approximation of geometric optics at high frequencies to accelerate computation, while precisely evaluating the diffraction integral at low frequencies. Through a Fisher analysis, we analyze the accuracy to estimate the lens parameters. We find that the accuracy can reach to the level of 10^-3 for the mass of point mass and SIS lens and to the level of 10^-5 for the density of the NFW lens. We also assess the impact on the accuracy of estimating the source parameters and find that the improvement of the accuracy is dominated by the increasing of signal-to-noise ratio.

We present a study of the relation between the [OIII] 5007A emission line width (sigma_{[OIII]}) and stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_{*}), utilizing a sample of 740 type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with high-quality spectra at redshift z < 1.0. We find the broad correlation between the core component of [OIII] emission line width (sigma_{[OIII,core]}) and sigma_{*} with a scatter of 0.11~dex for the low redshift (z < 0.1) sample; for redshift (0.3 < z < 1.0) AGNs, the scatter is larger, being 0.16~dex. We also find that the Eddington ratio (L_{bol}/L_{Edd}) may play an important role in the discrepancies between sigma_{[OIII,core]} and sigma_{*}. As the L_{bol}/L_{Edd} increases, sigma_{[OIII,core]} tends to be larger than sigma_{*}. By classifying our local sample with different minor-to-major axis ratios, we find that sigma_{*} is larger than sigma_{[OIII,core]} for those edge-on spiral galaxies. In addition, we also find that the effects of outflow strength properties such as maximum outflow velocity (V_{max}) and the broader component of [OIII] emission line width and line shift (sigma_{[OIII,out]} and V_{[OIII,out]}) may play a major role in the discrepancies between sigma_{[OIII,core]} and sigma_{*}. The discrepancies between sigma_{[OIII,core]} and sigma_{*} are larger when V_{max}, V_{[OIII,out]}, and sigma_{[OIII,out]} increase. Our results show that the outflow strengths may have significant effects on the differences between narrow-line region gas and stellar kinematics in AGNs. We suggest that caution should be taken when using sigma_{[OIII,core]} as a surrogate for sigma_{*}. In addition, the substitute of sigma_{[OIII,core]} for sigma_{*} could be used only for low luminosity AGNs.

High-resolution near infrared observations with GRAVITY instrument have revealed rapid orbital motions of a hot spot around Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in our Galactic center, during its three bright flares. The projected distances of the spot to the black hole are measured and seems to increase with time. The values of distance, combined with the measured orbiting time, imply that the spot is rotating with a super-Keplerian velocity. These results are hard to understand if the spot stay within the accretion flow thus provide strong constraints on theoretical models for flares. Previously we have proposed a "ME" model for the flares by analogy with the coronal mass ejection model in solar physics. In that model, magnetic reconnection occurred at the surface of the accretion flow results in the formation of flux ropes, which are then ejected out. Energetic electrons accelerated in the current sheet flow into the flux rope region and their radiation is responsible for the flares. In this paper, we apply the model to the interpretation of the GRAVITY results by calculating the dynamics of the ejected flux rope, the evolution of the magnetic field and the energy distribution of accelerated electrons, and the radiation of the system. We find that the model can well explain the observed light curve of the flares, the time-dependent distance and the super-Keplerian motion of the hot spot. It also explains why the light curve of some flares have double peaks.

Taking the existing interferometric HI image from the HALOGAS project of WSRT as reference, we are able to identify and characterize a significant excess of large-scale, low-density, and diffuse HI in the group. This diffuse HI extends for more than 120 kpc across, and accounts for more than one fourth of the total HI detected by FAST in and around the galaxy NGC 4631. In the region of the tidal tails, the diffuse HI has a typical column density above $10^{19.5}$ cm$^{-2}$, and is highly turbulent with a velocity dispersion around 50 km s$^{-1}$. It increases in column density with the dense HI, and tends to be associated with the kinematically ``hotter'' part of the dense HI. Through simple modeling, we find that the majority of the diffuse HI in the tail region is likely to induce cooling out of the hot IGM instead of evaporating or being radiatively ionized. Given these relations of gas in different phases, the diffuse HI may represent a condensing phase of the IGM. Active tidal interactions on-going and in the past may have produced the wide-spreading HI distribution, and triggered the gas accretion to NGC 4631 through the phase of the diffuse HI.

We present a study of seven spectroscopically confirmed (Ly$α$ emitting) galaxies at redshift $z\simeq6$ using the $JWST$/NIRCam imaging data. These galaxies, with a wide range of Ly$α$ luminosities, were recently observed in a series of NIRCam broad- and medium-bands. We constrain the rest-frame UV/optical continua and measure the H$α$ line emission of the galaxies using the combination of the $JWST$/NIRCam and archival $HST$/WFC3 infrared photometry. We further estimate their escape fractions of Ly$α$ photons ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Lyα}$) and the production efficiency of ionizing photons ($ξ_{\rm ion}$). Among the sample, 6/7 galaxies have Ly$α$ escape fractions of ${\lesssim}10\%$, which might be the status for most of star-forming galaxies at $z\simeq6$. One UV-faint Ly$α$ galaxy with an extremely blue UV slope owns a large value of $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Lyα}$ reaching ${\simeq}50\%$. These galaxies spread a broad range of $ξ_{\rm ion}$ over log$_{10}$ $ξ_{\rm ion, 0}$ (Hz erg$^{-1}$) $\sim25.0-26.5$. We find that UV-fainter galaxies with bluer UV continuum slopes likely have higher escape fractions of Ly$α$ photons. We also find that galaxies with higher Ly$α$ line emission tend to produce ionizing photons more efficiently. The most Ly$α$-luminous galaxy in the sample has a very high $ξ_{\rm ion, 0}$ of log$_{10}$ $ξ_{\rm ion, 0}$ (Hz erg$^{-1}$) $>26$. Our results support that Ly$α$ galaxies may have served as an important contributor to the cosmic reionization. Blue and bright Ly$α$ galaxies are excellent targets for $JWST$ follow-up spectroscopic observations.

We present the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) Pilot Phase I HI kinematic models. This first data release consists of HI observations of three fields in the direction of the Hydra and Norma clusters, and the NGC 4636 galaxy group. In this paper, we describe how we generate and publicly release flat-disk tilted-ring kinematic models for 109/592 unique HI detections in these fields. The modelling method adopted here - which we call the WALLABY Kinematic Analysis Proto-Pipeline (WKAPP) and for which the corresponding scripts are also publicly available - consists of combining results from the homogeneous application of the FAT and 3DBAROLO algorithms to the subset of 209 detections with sufficient resolution and S/N in order to generate optimized model parameters and uncertainties. The 109 models presented here tend to be gas rich detections resolved by at least 3-4 synthesized beams across their major axes, but there is no obvious environmental bias in the modelling. The data release described here is the first step towards the derivation of similar products for thousands of spatially-resolved WALLABY detections via a dedicated kinematic pipeline. Such a large publicly available and homogeneously analyzed dataset will be a powerful legacy product that that will enable a wide range of scientific studies.

We present WALLABY pilot data release 1, the first public release of HI pilot survey data from the Wide-field ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. Phase 1 of the WALLABY pilot survey targeted three $60~{\rm deg}^2$ regions on the sky in the direction of the Hydra and Norma galaxy clusters and the NGC 4636 galaxy group, covering the redshift range of z < 0.08. The source catalogue, images and spectra of nearly 600 extragalactic HI detections and kinematic models for 109 spatially resolved galaxies are available. As the pilot survey targeted regions containing nearby group and cluster environments, the median redshift of the sample of z ~ 0.014 is relatively low compared to the full WALLABY survey. The median galaxy HI mass is $2.3 \times 10^{9}~M_{\odot}$. The target noise level of 1.6 mJy per $30''$ beam and 18.5 kHz channel translates into a $5σ$ HI mass sensitivity for point sources of about $5.2 \times 10^{8} \, (D_{\rm L} / \mathrm{100~Mpc})^{2} \, M_{\odot}$ across 50 spectral channels (~200 km/s) and a $5σ$ HI column density sensitivity of about $8.6 \times 10^{19} \, (1 + z)^{4}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ across 5 channels (~20 km/s) for emission filling the $30''$ beam. As expected for a pilot survey, several technical issues and artefacts are still affecting the data quality. Most notably, there are systematic flux errors of up to several 10% caused by uncertainties about the exact size and shape of each of the primary beams as well as the presence of sidelobes due to the finite deconvolution threshold. In addition, artefacts such as residual continuum emission and bandpass ripples have affected some of the data. The pilot survey has been highly successful in uncovering such technical problems, most of which are expected to be addressed and rectified before the start of the full WALLABY survey.

We present a study of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of 51 dwarf galaxies ($M_\star\approx 10^{6.5} - 10^{9.5}~M_\odot$) at $z = 2-3$ from the Abell 2744 and SMACS J0723-3732 galaxy cluster fields. These dwarf galaxies are identified and confirmed by deep JWST/NIRISS imaging and slitless grism spectroscopic observations. By taking advantage of the superior performance of JWST and the gravitational lensing effect, we extend the previous MZR relation at $z=2-3$ to a much lower mass regime down by $\approx$ 2.5 orders of magnitude as compared with previous studies. We find that the MZR has a shallower slope at the low-mass end ($M_\star<10^{9}~M_\odot$), with a slope turnover point of $\approx$ $10^9~M_\odot$. This implies that the dominating feedback processes in dwarf galaxies may be different from that in massive galaxies. From $z=3$ to $z=2$, the metallicity of the dwarf galaxies is enhanced by $\approx0.09$ dex for a given stellar mass, consistent with the mild evolution found in galaxies with higher mass. Furthermore, we confirm the existence of a fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) between the gas-phase metallicity, stellar mass, and star formation rate in dwarf galaxies at $z=2-3$. Our derived FMR, which has no significant redshift evolution, can be used as a benchmark to understand the origin of the anti-correlation between the SFR and metallicity of dwarf galaxies in the high-$z$ Universe.

We investigate the ionized gas kinematics relationship with X-ray, radio and accreting properties using a sample of 348 nearby ($z < 0.4$) SDSS-FIRST-X-ray detected AGNs. X-ray properties of our sample are obtained from XMM-$Newton$, $Swift$ and $Chandra$ observations. We unveil the ionized gas outflows in our sample manifested by the non-gravitational broad component in [OIII] $λ$5007$\overset{\circ}{A}$. emission line profiles. From the comparison of the correlation of non-parametric outflow velocities (i.e., the velocity width, the maximal velocity of outflow and line dispersion) with X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity, we find that outflow velocities have similarly positive {correlations} with both X-ray and radio luminosity. After correcting for the gravitational component, we find that the [OIII] velocity dispersion normalized by stellar mass also increases with both X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity. We also find that for a given X-ray (radio) luminosity, radio (X-ray) luminous AGNs have higher outflow velocities than non-radio (non-X-ray) luminous AGNs. Therefore, we find no clear preference between X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity in driving high-velocity ionized outflows and conclude that both AGN activity and small-scale jets contribute comparably. Moreover, there is no evidence that our obscured AGNs are preferentially associated with higher velocity outflows. Finally, we find a turning point around log$(λ_{Edd}) \simeq -1.3$ when we explore the dependency of outflow velocity on Eddington ratio. It can be interpreted considering the role of high radiation pressure (log$(λ_{Edd}) \gtrsim -1.3$) in drastic reduction in the covering factor of the circumnuclear materials.

Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at $z\gtrsim4$ provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the Universe. Combining the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), VLT/MUSE, and ALMA, we present detailed observations of a strongly lensed, low-mass ($\approx 10^{7.6}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$) galaxy at $z=3.98$ (also see Vanzella et al. 2022). We identify strong narrow nebular emission, including CIV $λ\lambda1548,1550$, HeII $\lambda1640$, OIII] $λ\lambda1661,1666$, [NeIII] $\lambda3868$, [OII] $\lambda3727$, and Balmer series of Hydrogen from this galaxy, indicating a metal-poor HII region ($\lesssim 0.12\ {\rm Z}_\odot$) powered by massive stars. Further, we detect a metal-enriched damped Ly$α$ system (DLA) associated with the galaxy with the HI column density of $N_{\rm{HI}}\approx 10^{21.8}$ cm$^{-2}$. The metallicity of the associated DLA may reach the super solar metallicity (${\gtrsim Z}_\odot$). Moreover, thanks to JWST and gravitational lensing, we present the resolved UV slope ($β$) map at the spatial resolution of $\approx 100$ pc at $z=4$, with steep UV slopes reaching $β\approx -2.5$ around three star-forming clumps. Combining with low-redshift analogs, our observations suggest that low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies, which dominate reionization, could be surrounded by a high covering fraction of the metal-enriched, neutral-gaseous clouds. This implies that the metal enrichment of low-mass galaxies is highly efficient, and further support that in low-mass galaxies, only a small fraction of ionizing radiation can escape through the interstellar or circumgalactic channels with low column-density neutral gas.

Recently, several eclipsing millisecond pulsars have been shown to experience strong and apparent weak lensing from the outflow of their ionized companions. Lensing can be a powerful probe of the ionized plasma, with the strongest lenses potentially resolving emission regions of pulsars. Understanding lensing in the `laboratory-like' conditions of an eclipsing pulsar may be analogously applied to fast radio bursts, many of which reside in dense, magnetized environments. We examined variable dispersion measure (DM), absorption, scattering, and flux density in the original Black Widow pulsar PSR B1957+20 through an eclipse at the Arecibo Observatory at 327 MHz. We discovered clear evidence of the two regimes of lensing, strong and apparent weak. We show that the flux density variations in the apparently weak lensing regime can be modeled directly from variations of DM, using geometric optics. The mean effective velocities in the ingress, $954\pm 99$ km/s, and egress $604\pm 47$ km/s cannot be explained by orbital motions alone, but are consistent with significant outflow velocity of material from the companion. We also show that geometric optics can predict when and where the lensing regime-change between weak and strong occurs, and argue that the apparent weak lensing is due to averaging many images. Our framework can be applied in any source with variable electron columns, measuring their relative velocities and distances. In other eclipsing pulsars, this provides a unique opportunity to measure companion outflow velocity, predict regions of weak and strong lensing, and in principle independently constrain orbital inclinations.

We present DM-power, a new method for precisely determining the dispersion measure (DM) of radio bursts, and apply it to the Fast Radio Burst (FRB) source FRB~20180916B. Motivated by the complex structure on multiple time scales seen in FRBs, DM-power optimizes the DM by combining measurements at multiple Fourier frequencies in the power spectrum of the burst. By optimally weighting the measurements at each Fourier frequency, DM-power finds a burst DM that effectively incorporates information on many different burst timescales. We validate this technique on simulated Gaussian pulse profiles with a precision down to $σ_{\rm DM} \sim 0.001~{\rm pc~cm}^{-3}$, and then apply it to bursts from pulsar B0329+54 and FRB~20180916B. The precision of these DM measurements are sufficient to measure a statistically significant variation in DM over a $\approx 2$ hr span. While this variation could be the result of electron density variations along the line of sight, it is more like that the observed variation is the result of intrinsic frequency-dependent burst structure that can mimic a dispersive delay.

Spiral arms serve crucial purposes in star formation and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we report the identification of A2744-DSG-$z3$, a dusty, multiarm spiral galaxy at $z=3.059$ using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRISS imaging and grism spectroscopy. A2744-DSG-$z3$ was discovered as a gravitationally lensed sub-millimeter galaxy with ALMA. This is the most distant stellar spiral structure seen thus far, consistent with cosmological simulations which suggest $z\approx3$ as the epoch when spirals emerge. Thanks to the gravitational lensing and excellent spatial resolution of JWST, the spiral arms are resolved with a spatial resolution of $\approx290$\,pc. Based on SED fitting, the spiral galaxy has a de-lensed star formation rate of $85\pm30 \ M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and a stellar mass of $\approx10^{10.6}\ M_{\odot}$, indicating that A2744-DSG-$z3$ is a main-sequence galaxy. After fitting the spiral arms, we find a stellar effective radius ($R_{e, \rm{star}}$) of $5.0\pm1.5$ kpc. Combing with ALMA measurements, we find that the effective radii ratio between dust and stars is $\approx0.4$, similar to {those} of massive SFGs at $z\sim2$, indicating a compact dusty core in A2744-DSG-$z3$. Moreover, this galaxy appears to be living in a group environment: including A2744-DSG-$z3$, at least three galaxies at $z=3.05 - 3.06$ {are} spectroscopically confirmed by JWST/NIRISS and ALMA, residing within a lensing-corrected projected scale of $\approx 70$ kpc. This, along with the asymmetric brightness profile, further suggests that the spiral arms may be triggered by minor merger events at $z\gtrsim3$.

Based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16, we have detected the large-scale structure of Ly$α$ emission in the Universe at redshifts $z = 2$--3.5 by cross-correlating quasar positions and Ly$α$ emission imprinted in the residual spectra of luminous red galaxies. We apply an analytical model to fit the corresponding Ly$α$ surface brightness profile and multipoles of the redshift-space quasar-Ly$α$ emission cross-correlation function. The model suggests an average cosmic Ly$α$ luminosity density of ${6.6_{-3.1}^{+3.3}}\times 10^{40} {\rm erg\, s^{-1} cMpc^{-3}}$, a $\sim 2σ$ detection with a median value about 8--9 times those estimated from deep narrowband surveys of Ly$α$ emitters at similar redshifts. Although the low signal-to-noise ratio prevents us from a significant detection of the Ly$α$ forest-Ly$α$ emission cross-correlation, the measurement is consistent with the prediction of our best-fit model from quasar-Ly$α$ emission cross-correlation within current uncertainties. We rule out the scenario that these Ly$α$ photons mainly originate from quasars. We find that Ly$α$ emission from star-forming galaxies, including contributions from that concentrated around the galaxy centers and that in the diffuse Ly$α$ emitting halos, is able to explain the bulk of the the Ly$α$ luminosity density inferred from our measurements. Ongoing and future surveys can further improve the measurements and advance our understanding of the cosmic Ly$α$ emission field.

We present new results of a 12CO(J=1-0) imaging survey using the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) for 31 HI detected galaxies in the IC 1459 and NGC 4636 groups. This is the first CO imaging survey for loose galaxy groups. We obtained well-resolved CO data (~0.7-1.5 kpc) for a total of 16 galaxies in two environments. By comparing our ACA CO data with the HI and UV data, we probe the impacts of the group environment on the cold gas components (CO and HI gas) and star formation activity. We find that CO and/or HI morphologies are disturbed in our group members, some of which show highly asymmetric CO distributions (e.g., IC 5264, NGC 7421, and NGC 7418). In comparison with isolated galaxies in the xCOLD GASS sample, our group galaxies tend to have low star formation rates and low H2 gas fractions. Our findings suggest that the group environment can change the distribution of cold gas components, including the molecular gas, and star formation properties of galaxies. This is supporting evidence that preprocessing in the group-like environment can play an important role in galaxy evolution.

We have updated and applied a convolutional neural network (CNN) machine learning model to discover and characterize damped Ly$α$ systems (DLAs) based on Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) mock spectra. We have optimized the training process and constructed a CNN model that yields a DLA classification accuracy above 99$\%$ for spectra which have signal-to-noise (S/N) above 5 per pixel. Classification accuracy is the rate of correct classifications. This accuracy remains above 97$\%$ for lower signal-to-noise (S/N) $\approx1$ spectra. This CNN model provides estimations for redshift and HI column density with standard deviations of 0.002 and 0.17 dex for spectra with S/N above 3 per pixel. Also, this DLA finder is able to identify overlapping DLAs and sub-DLAs. Further, the impact of different DLA catalogs on the measurement of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) is investigated. The cosmological fitting parameter result for BAO has less than $0.61\%$ difference compared to analysis of the mock results with perfect knowledge of DLAs. This difference is lower than the statistical error for the first year estimated from the mock spectra: above $1.7\%$. We also compared the performance of CNN and Gaussian Process (GP) model. Our improved CNN model has moderately 14$\%$ higher purity and 7$\%$ higher completeness than an older version of GP code, for S/N $>$ 3. Both codes provide good DLA redshift estimates, but the GP produces a better column density estimate by $24\%$ less standard deviation. A credible DLA catalog for DESI main survey can be provided by combining these two algorithms.

We study the tidal interaction of galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup, using HI data from the pre-pilot survey of WALLABY (Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY). We obtain optical photometric measurements and quantify the strength of tidal perturbation using a tidal parameter $S_{sum}$. For low-mass galaxies of $M_* \lesssim 10^9 M_\odot$, we find a dependence of decreasing HI-to-optical disk size ratio with increasing $S_{sum}$, but no dependence of HI spectral line asymmetry with $S_{sum}$. This is consistent with the behavior expected under tidal stripping. We confirm that the color profile shape and color gradient depend on the stellar mass, but there is additional correlation of low-mass galaxies having their color gradients within $2R_{50}$ increasing with higher $S_{sum}$. For these low-mass galaxies, the dependence of color gradients on $S_{sum}$ is driven by color becoming progressively redder in the inner disk when tidal perturbations are stronger. For high-mass galaxies, there is no dependence of color gradients on $S_{sum}$, and we find a marginal reddening throughout the disks with increasing $S_{sum}$. Our result highlights tidal interaction as an important environmental effect in producing the faint end of the star formation suppressed sequence in galaxy groups.

The coevolution between supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies has been proposed for more than a decade, albeit with little direct evidence about black hole accretion activities regulating galaxy star formation at $z>1$. In this paper, we study the lifetimes of X-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in $UV$-selected red sequence (RS), blue cloud (BC) and green valley (GV) galaxies, finding that AGN accretion activities are most prominent in GV galaxies at $z\sim1.5-2$, compared with RS and BC galaxies. We also compare AGN accretion timescales with typical color transition timescales of $UV$-selected galaxies. We find that the lifetime of GV galaxies at $z\sim1.5-2$ is very close to the typical timescale when the AGNs residing in them stay in the high-accretion-rate mode at these redshifts; for BC galaxies, the consistency between the color transition timescale and the black hole strong accretion lifetime is more likely to happen at lower redshifts ($z<1$). Our results support the scenario where AGN accretion activities govern $UV$ color transitions of host galaxies, making galaxies and their central SMBHs coevolve with each other.

We report on an unusually bright observation of PSR J2051$-$0827 recorded during a regular monitoring campaign of black-widow pulsar systems with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Through fortunate coincidence, a particularly bright scintillation maximum is simultaneous with the eclipse by the companion, enabling precise measurements of variations in the flux density, dispersion measure (DM), and scattering strength throughout the eclipse. The flux density is highly variable throughout the eclipse, with a peak 1.7 times the average away from the eclipse, and yet does not significantly decrease on average. We recover the flux density variations from the measured DM variations using geometric optics, with a relative velocity as the only free parameter. We measure an effective velocity of (470 $\pm$ 10) km/s, consistent with the relative orbital motion of the companion, suggesting that the outflow velocity of the lensing material is low, or is directly along the line of sight. The 2 per cent uncertainty on the effective velocity is a formal error; systematics related to our current model are likely to dominate, and we detail several extensions to the model to be considered in a full treatment of lensing. This is a demonstration of the causal link between DM and lensing; the flux density variations can be predicted directly through the derivatives of DM. Going forward, this approach can be applied to investigate the dynamics of other eclipsing systems, and to investigate the physical nature of scintillation and lensing in the ionized interstellar medium.

Propagation effects in the interstellar medium and intrinsic profile changes can cause variability in the timing of pulsars, which limits the accuracy of fundamental science done via pulsar timing. One of the best timing pulsars, PSR J1713+0747, has gone through two `dip' events in its dispersion measure (DM) time series. If these events reflect real changes in electron column density, they should lead to multiple imaging. We show that the events are are well fitted by an underdense corrugated sheet model, and look for associated variability in the pulse profile using principal component analysis. We find that there are transient pulse profile variations, but they vary in concert with the dispersion measure, unlike what is expected from lensing due to a corrugated sheet. The change is consistent in shape across profiles from both the Greenbank and Arecibo radio observatories, and its amplitude appears to be achromatic across the 820-MHz, 1.4-GHz, and 2.3-GHz bands, again unlike expected from interference between lensed images. This result is puzzling. We note that some of the predicted lensing effects would need higher time and frequency resolution data than used in this analysis. Future events appear likely, and storing baseband data or keeping multiple time-frequency resolutions will allow more in-depth study of propagation effects and hence improvements to pulsar timing accuracy.

The study of astrophysical plasma lensing, such as in the case of extreme scattering events, has typically been conducted using the geometric limit of optics, neglecting wave effects. However, for the lensing of coherent sources such as pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs), wave effects can play an important role. Asymptotic methods, such as the so-called Eikonal limit, also known as the stationary phase approximation, have been used to include first-order wave effects; however, these methods fail at Stokes lines. Stokes lines are generic features of a variety of lens models, and are regions in parameter space where imaginary images begin to contribute to the overall intensity modulation of lensed sources. Using the mathematical framework of Picard-Lefschetz theory to compute diffraction integrals, we argue that these imaginary images contain as much information as their geometric counterparts, and may potentially be observable in data. Thus, weak-lensing events where these imaginary images are present can be as useful for inferring lens parameters as strong-lensing events in which multiple geometric images are present.

We present an estimation of lifetimes of massive galaxies with distinct UV colors at $0.5 \le z \le 2.5$ in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field. After dividing the galaxy sample into subsamples of red sequence (RS), blue cloud (BC), and green valley (GV) galaxies in different redshift bins, according to their rest-frame extinction-corrected UV colors, we derive their lifetimes using clustering analyses. Several essentials that may influence the lifetime estimation have been explored, including the dark matter (DM) halo mass function (HMF), the width of redshift bin, the growth of DM halos within each redshift bin, and the stellar mass. We find that the HMF difference results in scatters of $\sim0.2$ dex on lifetime estimation; adopting a redshift bin width of $Δz = 0.5$ is good enough to estimate the lifetime; and no significant effect on lifetime estimation is found due to the growth of DM halos within each redshift bin. The galaxy subsamples with higher stellar masses generally have shorter lifetimes; however, the lifetimes among different subsamples at z > 1:5 tend to be independent of stellar mass. Consistently, the clustering-based lifetime for each galaxy subsample agrees well with that inferred using the spectral energy distribution modeling. Moreover, the lifetimes of the RS and BC galaxies also coincide well with their typical gas depletion timescales attributed to the consumption of star formation. Interestingly, the distinct lifetime behaviors of the GV galaxies at $z \le 1.5$ and $z>1.5$ can not be fully accounted for by their gas depletion timescales. Instead, this discrepancy between the lifetimes and gas depletion timescales of the GV galaxies suggests that there are additional physical processes, such as feedback of active galactic nuclei, accelerating the quenching of GV galaxies at high redshifts.

M51 and NGC 5195 is an interacting system that can be explored in great details with ground-based telescopes. The H II regions in M51 were observed using the 2.16 m telescope of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 6.5 m Multiple Mirror Telescope with spatial resolution of less than $\sim100$ pc. We obtain a total of 113 spectra across the galaxy and combine the literature data of Croxall et al. to derive a series of physical properties, including the gas-phase extinction, stellar population age, star formation rate (SFR) surface density, and oxygen abundance. The spatial distributions and radial profiles of these properties are investigated in order to study the characteristics of M51 and the clues to the formation and evolution of this galaxy. M51 presents a mild radial extinction gradient. The lower gas-phase extinction in the north spiral arms compared to the south arms are possibly caused by the past encounters with the companion galaxy of NGC 5195. A number of H II regions have the stellar age between 50 and 500 Myr, consistent with the recent interaction history by simulations in the literatures. The SFR surface density presents a mild radial gradient, which is ubiquitous in spiral galaxies. There is a negative metallicity gradient of $-0.08$ dex $R_{e}^{-1}$ in the disk region, which is also commonly found in many spiral galaxies. It is supported by the "inside-out" scenario of galaxy formation. We find a positive abundance gradient of 0.26 dex $R_{e}^{-1}$ in the inner region. There are possible reasons causing the positive gradient, including the freezing of the chemical enrichment due to the star-forming quenching in the bulge and the gas infall and dilution due to the pseudobulge growth and/or galactic interaction.

We present a measurement of the spatial clustering of rest-frame UV-selected massive galaxies at $0.5\le z \le 2.5$ in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field. Considering four separate redshift bins with $Δz=0.5$, we construct three galaxy populations, i.e., red sequence (RS), blue cloud (BC), and green valley (GV) galaxies, according to their rest-frame extinction-corrected UV colors. The correlation lengths of these populations are confirmed to be dependent on their rest-frame UV color and redshift: UV redder galaxies are found to be more clustered. In all redshift bins, the GV galaxies generally have medium clustering amplitudes and are hosted within dark matter halos whose masses are more or less between those of RS and BC galaxies; and the clustering amplitude of GV galaxies is close to that of AGNs in the same redshift bin, suggesting that AGN activity may be responsible for transforming galaxy colors. After carefully examining their stellar masses, we find that the clustering amplitudes of galaxy samples with different colors are all similar once they have a similar median stellar mass and that the median stellar mass alone may be a good predictor of galaxy clustering.

In regions with strongly varying electron density, radio emission can be magnified significantly by plasma lensing. In the presence of magnetic fields, magnification in time and frequency will be different for two circular polarizations. We show how these effects can be used to measure or constrain the magnetic field parallel to the line of sight, $B_\parallel$, as well as its spatial structure, $σ_{B_\parallel}$, in the lensing region. In addition, we discuss how generalized Faraday rotation can constrain the strength of the perpendicular field, $B_\perp$. We attempt to make such measurements for the Black Widow pulsar, PSR~B1957+20, in which plasma lensing was recently discovered. For this system, pressure equilibrium suggests $B\gtrsim 20\,$G at the interface between the pulsar and companion winds, where the radio eclipse starts and ends, and where most lensing occurs. We find no evidence for large-scale magnetic fields, with, on average, $B_\parallel=0.02\pm0.09\,$G over the egress lensing region. From individual lensing events, we strongly constrain small scale magnetic structure to $σ_B<10\,$mG, thus excluding scenarios with a strong but rapidly varying field. Finally, from the lack of reduction of average circular polarization in the same region, we rule out a strong, quasi-transverse field. We cannot identify any plausible scenario in which a large magnetic field in this system is concealed, leaving the nature of the interface between the pulsar and companion winds an enigma. Our method can be applied to other sources showing plasma lensing, including other eclipsing pulsars and fast radio bursts, to study the local properties of the magnetic field.

Radio pulsars scintillate because their emission travels through the ionized interstellar medium via multiple paths, which interfere with each other. It has long been realized that the scattering screens responsible for the scintillation could be used as `interstellar lenses' to localize pulsar emission regions. Most scattering screens, however, only marginally resolve emission components, limiting results to statistical inferences and detections of small positional shifts. Since screens situated close to the source have better resolution, it should be easier to resolve emission regions of pulsars located in high density environments such as supernova remnants or binaries in which the pulsar's companion has an ionized outflow. Here, we report events of extreme plasma lensing in the `Black Widow' pulsar, PSR~B1957+20, near the phase in its 9.2 hour orbit in which its emission is eclipsed by its companion's outflow. During the lensing events, the flux is enhanced by factors of up to 70--80 at specific frequencies. The strongest events clearly resolve the emission regions: they affect the narrow main pulse and parts of the wider interpulse differently. We show that the events arise naturally from density fluctuations in the outer regions of the outflow, and infer a resolution of our lenses comparable to the pulsar's radius, about 10\,km. Furthermore, the distinct frequency structures imparted by the lensing are reminiscent of what is observed for the repeating fast radio burst FRB 121102, providing observational support for the idea that this source is observed through, and thus at times strongly magnified by, plasma lenses.

Ten transitions ($J$ = 3-2 and 4-3) of ortho- and para-H$_2$CO near 211, 218, 225, and 291 GHz were observed with the APEX 12 m telescope. Using non-LTE models with RADEX, we derive the gas kinetic temperature and spatial density using the measured p-H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$-2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$, 4$_{22}$-3$_{21}$/4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$, and 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ ratios. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the p-H$_2$CO 3$_{21}$-2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ and 4$_{22}$-3$_{21}$/4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$ line ratios are high, ranging from 43 to $>$300 K with an unweighted average of 91 $\pm$ 4 K. Deduced $T_{\rm kin}$ values from the $J$ = 3-2 and 4-3 transitions are similar. Spatial densities of the gas derived from the p-H$_2$CO 4$_{04}$-3$_{03}$/3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$ line ratios yield 0.6-8.3 $\times$ 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$ with an unweighted average of 1.5 ($\pm$0.1) $\times$ 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$. A comparison of kinetic temperatures derived from p-H$_2$CO, NH$_3$, and the dust emission indicates that p-H$_2$CO traces a distinctly higher temperature than the NH$_3$ (2,2)/(1,1) transitions and the dust, tracing heated gas more directly associated with the star formation process. The H$_2$CO linewidths are found to be correlated with bolometric luminosity and increase with the evolutionary stage of the clumps, which suggests that higher luminosities tend to be associated with a more turbulent molecular medium. It seems that the spatial densities measured with H$_2$CO do not vary significantly with the evolutionary stage of the clumps. However, averaged gas kinetic temperatures derived from H$_2$CO increase with time through the evolution of the clumps.

We mapped the kinetic temperature structure of the Orion molecular cloud 1 with para-H2CO(303-202, 322-221, and 321-220) using the APEX 12m telescope. This is compared with the temperatures derived from the ratio of the NH3(2,2)/(1,1) inversion lines and the dust emission. Using the RADEX non-LTE model, we derive the gas kinetic temperature modeling the measured averaged line ratios of para-H2CO 322-221/303-202 and 321-220/303-202. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the para-H2CO line ratios are warm, ranging from 30 to >200 K with an average of 62 K at a spatial density of 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$. These temperatures are higher than those obtained from NH3(2,2)/(1,1) and CH3CCH(6-5) in the OMC-1 region. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from para-H2CO agree with those obtained from warm dust components measured in the mid infrared (MIR), which indicates that the para-H2CO(3-2) ratios trace dense and warm gas. The cold dust components measured in the far infrared (FIR) are consistent with those measured with NH3(2,2)/(1,1) and the CH3CCH(6-5) line series. With dust at MIR wavelengths and para-H2CO(3-2) on one side and dust at FIR wavelengths, NH3(2,2)/(1,1), and CH3CCH(6-5) on the other, dust and gas temperatures appear to be equivalent in the dense gas of the OMC-1 region, but provide a bimodal distribution, one more directly related to star formation than the other. The non-thermal velocity dispersions of para-H2CO are positively correlated with the gas kinetic temperatures in regions of strong non-thermal motion (Mach number >2.5) of the OMC-1, implying that the higher temperature traced by para-H2CO is related to turbulence on a 0.06 pc scale. Combining the temperature measurements with para-H2CO and NH3(2,2)/(1,1) line ratios, we find direct evidence for the dense gas along the northern part of the OMC-1 10 km s$^{-1}$ filament heated by radiation from the central Orion nebula.

We present a measurement of the spatial clustering of massive compact galaxies at $1.2\le z \le 3$ in CANDELS/3D-HST fields. We obtain the correlation length for compact quiescent galaxies (cQGs) at $z\sim1.6$ of $r_{0}=7.1_{-2.6}^{+2.3}\ h^{-1}Mpc$ and compact star forming galaxies (cSFGs) at $z\sim2.5$ of $r_{0}=7.7_{-2.9}^{+2.7}\ h^{-1}Mpc$ assuming a power-law slope $γ=1.8$. The characteristic dark matter halo masses $M_H$ of cQGs at $z\sim1.6$ and cSFGs at $z\sim2.5$ are $\sim7.1\times 10^{12}\ h^{-1} M_\odot$ and $\sim4.4\times10^{12}\ h^{-1} M_\odot$, respectively. Our clustering result suggests that cQGs at $z\sim1.6$ are possibly the progenitors of local luminous ETGs and the descendants of cSFGs and SMGs at $z>2$. Thus an evolutionary connection involving SMGs, cSFGs, QSOs, cQGs and local luminous ETGs has been indicated by our clustering result.
