We have characterized the electronic properties of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system in modulation doped InAsSb quantum wells and compare them to InSb quantum wells grown in a similar fashion. Using temperature-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas experiments as well as FIR transmission we find an effective mass of $m^{\ast} \approx$ 0.022$m_{e}$, which is lower than in the investigated InSb quantum well, but due to a rather strong confinement still higher than in the corresponding bulk compound. The effective $g$-factor was determined to be $g^{\ast} \approx$ 21.9. These results are also corroborated by $k \cdot p$ band structure calculations. When spin polarizing the electrons in a tilted magnetic field, the $g$-factor is significantly enhanced by electron-electron interactions, reaching a value as large as $g^{\ast}$ = 60 at a spin polarization P = 0.75. Finally, we show that due to the low effective mass the quantum Hall effect in our particular sample can be observed up to a temperature of 60 K and we propose scenarios how to increase this temperature even further.

Controlling magnetic anisotropy is a key requirement for the fundamental understanding of molecular magnetism and is a prerequisite for numerous applications in magnetic storage, spintronics, and all-spin logic devices. In order to address the question of molecular magnetic anisotropy experimentally, we have synthesized single-crystals of a molecular spin system containing four antiferromagnetically coupled s = 5/2 manganese(II) ions. Using low-temperature cantilever magnetometry, we demonstrate the selective population of the S = 0, 1, . . . , 10 spin states upon application of magnetic fields up to 33 T and map the magnetic anisotropy of each of these states. We observe a strong dependence of the shape and size of the magnetic anisotropy on the populated spin states, and, in particular, reveal an anisotropy reversal upon going from the lowest to the highest spin-state.

Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO$_3$ contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field.

Low-energy magnetic excitations of the easy-axis antiferromagnet TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated by far-infrared absorption and reflection spectroscopy in high magnetic fields up to 30 T. The observed field dependence of the resonance frequencies and the magnetization are reproduced by a mean-field spin model for magnetic fields applied both along and perpendicular to the easy axis. Based on this model we determined the full set of magnetic interactions, including Fe-Fe and Fe-Tb exchange interactions, single-ion anisotropy for Tb ions and $g$-factors, which describe the ground-state spin texture and the low-energy spin excitations of TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. Compared to earlier studies we allow a small canting of the nearly Ising-like Tb moments to achieve a quantitative agreement with the magnetic susceptibility measurements. The additional high energy magnetic resonance lines observed, besides the two resonances expected for a two-sublattice antiferromagnet, suggest a more complex six-sublattice magnetic ground state for TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$.

We report on spectroscopy study of elementary magnetic excitations in an Ising-like antiferromagnetic chain compound SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and applied transverse magnetic field up to 25 T. An optical as well as an acoustic branch of confined spinons, the elementary excitations at zero field, are identified in the antiferromagnetic phase below the Néel temperature of 5 K and described by a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. The confinement can be suppressed by an applied transverse field and a quantum disordered phase is induced at 7 T. In this disordered paramagnetic phase, we observe three emergent fermionic excitations with different transverse-field dependencies. The nature of these modes is clarified by studying spin dynamic structure factor of a 1D transverse-field Heisenberg-Ising (XXZ) model using the method of infinite time evolving block decimation. Our work reveals emergent quantum phenomena and provides a concrete system for testifying theoretical predications of one-dimension quantum spin models.

The optical magnetoelectric effect, which is an inherent attribute of the spin excitations in multiferroics, drastically changes their optical properties compared to conventional materials where light-matter interaction is expressed only by the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. Our polarized absorption experiments performed on multiferroic Ca2CoSi2O7 and Ba2CoGe2O7 in the THz spectral range demonstrate that such magnetoeletric spin excitations show quadrochroism, i.e. they have different colours for all the four combinations of the two propagation directions (forward or backward) and the two orthogonal polarizations of a light beam. We found that quadrochroism can give rise to peculiar optical properties, such as one-way transparency and zero-reflection of these excitations, which can open a new horizon in photonics. One-way transparency is also related to the static magnetoelectric phenomena, hence, these optical studies can provide guidelines for the systematic synthesis of new materials with large dc magnetoelectric effect.

We report on an investigation of optical properties of multiferroic CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ at terahertz frequencies in magnetic fields up to 30 T. Below the ferrimagnetic transition (94 K), the terahertz response of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is dominated by a magnon mode, which shows a steep magnetic-field dependence. We ascribe this mode to an exchange resonance between two magnetic sublattices with different $g$-factors. In the framework of a simple two-sublattice model (the sublattices are formed by Co$^{2+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions), we find the inter-sublattice coupling constant, $λ= - (18 \pm 1)$ K, and trace the magnetization for each sublattice as a function of field. We show that the Curie temperature of the Cr$^{3+}$ sublattice, $Θ_{2}$ = $(49 \pm 2)$ K, coincides with the temperature range, where anomalies of the dielectric and magnetic properties of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ have been reported in literature.

We have studied the magnetic field dependence of far-infrared active magnetic modes in a single ferroelectric domain \BFO/ crystal at low temperature. The modes soften close to the critical field of 18.8\,T along the [001] (pseudocubic) axis, where the cycloidal structure changes to the homogeneous canted antiferromagnetic state and a new strong mode with linear field dependence appears that persists at least up to 31\,T. A microscopic model that includes two \DM/ interactions and easy-axis anisotropy describes closely both the zero-field spectroscopic modes as well as their splitting and evolution in a magnetic field. The good agreement of theory with experiment suggests that the proposed model provides the foundation for future technological applications of this multiferroic material.

We studied spin excitations of the multiferroic Ba2CoGe2O7 in high magnetic fields up to 33 T. In the electron spin resonance and far infrared absorption spectra we found several spin excitations beyond the two conventional magnon modes expected for such a two-sublattice antiferromagnet. We show that a multi-boson spin-wave theory can capture these unconventional modes, that include spin-stretching modes associated with an oscillating magnetic dipole (or only quadrupole) moment. The lack of the inversion symmetry allows these modes to become electric dipole active. We expect that the spin-stretching modes can be generally observed in inelastic neutron scattering and light absorption experiments in a broad class of ordered S > 1/2 spin systems with strong single-ion anisotropy and/or non-centrosymmetric lattice structure.
