People commonly communicate in English, Arabic, and Bengali spoken languages through various mediums. However, deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals primarily use body language and sign language to express their needs and achieve independence. Sign language research is burgeoning to enhance communication with the deaf community. While many researchers have made strides in recognizing sign languages such as French, British, Arabic, Turkish, and American, there has been limited research on Bangla sign language (BdSL) with less-than-satisfactory results. One significant barrier has been the lack of a comprehensive Bangla sign language dataset. In our work, we introduced a new BdSL dataset comprising alphabets totaling 18,000 images, with each image being 224x224 pixels in size. Our dataset encompasses 36 Bengali symbols, of which 30 are consonants and the remaining six are vowels. Despite our dataset contribution, many existing systems continue to grapple with achieving high-performance accuracy for BdSL. To address this, we devised a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, integrating multiple convolutional layers, activation functions, dropout techniques, and LSTM layers. Upon evaluating our hybrid-CNN model with the newly created BdSL dataset, we achieved an accuracy rate of 97.92\%. We are confident that both our BdSL dataset and hybrid CNN model will be recognized as significant milestones in BdSL research.

The versatile nature of Visual Sentiment Analysis (VSA) is one reason for its rising profile. It isn't easy to efficiently manage social media data with visual information since previous research has concentrated on Sentiment Analysis (SA) of single modalities, like textual. In addition, most visual sentiment studies need to adequately classify sentiment because they are mainly focused on simply merging modal attributes without investigating their intricate relationships. This prompted the suggestion of developing a fusion of deep learning and machine learning algorithms. In this research, a deep feature-based method for multiclass classification has been used to extract deep features from modified ResNet50. Furthermore, gradient boosting algorithm has been used to classify photos containing emotional content. The approach is thoroughly evaluated on two benchmarked datasets, CrowdFlower and GAPED. Finally, cutting-edge deep learning and machine learning models were used to compare the proposed strategy. When compared to state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed method demonstrates exceptional performance on the datasets presented.

In recent times, the utilization of 3D models has gained traction, owing to the capacity for end-to-end training initially offered by Neural Radiance Fields and more recently by 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) models. The latter holds a significant advantage by inherently easing rapid convergence during training and offering extensive editability. However, despite rapid advancements, the literature still lives in its infancy regarding the scalability of these models. In this study, we take some initial steps in addressing this gap, showing an approach that enables both the memory and computational scalability of such models. Specifically, we propose "Trimming the fat", a post-hoc gradient-informed iterative pruning technique to eliminate redundant information encoded in the model. Our experimental findings on widely acknowledged benchmarks attest to the effectiveness of our approach, revealing that up to 75% of the Gaussians can be removed while maintaining or even improving upon baseline performance. Our approach achieves around 50$\times$ compression while preserving performance similar to the baseline model, and is able to speed-up computation up to 600 FPS.

Data privacy has become a major concern in healthcare due to the increasing digitization of medical records and data-driven medical research. Protecting sensitive patient information from breaches and unauthorized access is critical, as such incidents can have severe legal and ethical complications. Federated Learning (FL) addresses this concern by enabling multiple healthcare institutions to collaboratively learn from decentralized data without sharing it. FL's scope in healthcare covers areas such as disease prediction, treatment customization, and clinical trial research. However, implementing FL poses challenges, including model convergence in non-IID (independent and identically distributed) data environments, communication overhead, and managing multi-institutional collaborations. A systematic review of FL in healthcare is necessary to evaluate how effectively FL can provide privacy while maintaining the integrity and usability of medical data analysis. In this study, we analyze existing literature on FL applications in healthcare. We explore the current state of model security practices, identify prevalent challenges, and discuss practical applications and their implications. Additionally, the review highlights promising future research directions to refine FL implementations, enhance data security protocols, and expand FL's use to broader healthcare applications, which will benefit future researchers and practitioners.

Despite being proposed as early as 1959, COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) still predominantly acts as an integral part of the majority of operations of several financial, banking, and governmental organizations. To support the inevitable modernization and maintenance of legacy systems written in COBOL, it is essential for organizations, researchers, and developers to understand the nature and source code of COBOL programs. However, to the best of our knowledge, we are unaware of any dataset that provides data on COBOL software projects, motivating the need for the dataset. Thus, to aid empirical research on comprehending COBOL in open-source repositories, we constructed a dataset of 84 COBOL repositories mined from GitHub, containing rich metadata on the development cycle of the projects. We envision that researchers can utilize our dataset to study COBOL projects' evolution, code properties and develop tools to support their development. Our dataset also provides 1255 COBOL files present inside the mined repositories. The dataset and artifacts are available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7968845.

The field of medical imaging is an essential aspect of the medical sciences, involving various forms of radiation to capture images of the internal tissues and organs of the body. These images provide vital information for clinical diagnosis, and in this chapter, we will explore the use of X-ray, MRI, and nuclear imaging in detecting severe illnesses. However, manual evaluation and storage of these images can be a challenging and time-consuming process. To address this issue, artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques, particularly deep learning (DL), have become increasingly popular for systematic feature extraction and classification from imaging modalities, thereby aiding doctors in making rapid and accurate diagnoses. In this review study, we will focus on how AI-based approaches, particularly the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), can assist in disease detection through medical imaging technology. CNN is a commonly used approach for image analysis due to its ability to extract features from raw input images, and as such, will be the primary area of discussion in this study. Therefore, we have considered CNN as our discussion area in this study to diagnose ailments using medical imaging technology.

Deep learning becomes an elevated context regarding disposing of many machine learning tasks and has shown a breakthrough upliftment to extract features from unstructured data. Though this flourishing context is developing in the medical image processing sector, scarcity of problem-dependent training data has become a larger issue in the way of easy application of deep learning in the medical sector. To unravel the confined data source, researchers have developed a model that can solve machine learning problems with fewer data called ``Few shot learning". Few hot learning algorithms determine to solve the data limitation problems by extracting the characteristics from a small dataset through classification and segmentation methods. In the medical sector, there is frequently a shortage of available datasets in respect of some confidential diseases. Therefore, Few shot learning gets the limelight in this data scarcity sector. In this chapter, the background and basic overview of a few shots of learning is represented. Henceforth, the classification of few-shot learning is described also. Even the paper shows a comparison of methodological approaches that are applied in medical image analysis over time. The current advancement in the implementation of few-shot learning concerning medical imaging is illustrated. The future scope of this domain in the medical imaging sector is further described.

The performance of convolutional neural networks (CNN) depends heavily on their architectures. Transfer learning performance of a CNN relies quite strongly on selection of its trainable layers. Selecting the most effective update layers for a certain target dataset often requires expert knowledge on CNN architecture which many practitioners do not posses. General users prefer to use an available architecture (e.g. GoogleNet, ResNet, EfficientNet etc.) that is developed by domain experts. With the ever-growing number of layers, it is increasingly becoming quite difficult and cumbersome to handpick the update layers. Therefore, in this paper we explore the application of genetic algorithm to mitigate this problem. The convolutional layers of popular pretrained networks are often grouped into modules that constitute their building blocks. We devise a genetic algorithm to select blocks of layers for updating the parameters. By experimenting with EfficientNetB0 pre-trained on ImageNet and using Food-101, CIFAR-100 and MangoLeafBD as target datasets, we show that our algorithm yields similar or better results than the baseline in terms of accuracy, and requires lower training and evaluation time due to learning less number of parameters. We also devise a metric called block importance to measure efficacy of each block as update block and analyze the importance of the blocks selected by our algorithm.

The recent development of Monkeypox disease among various nations poses a global pandemic threat when the world is still fighting Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). At its dawn, the slow and steady transmission of Monkeypox disease among individuals needs to be addressed seriously. Over the years, Deep learning (DL) based disease prediction has demonstrated true potential by providing early, cheap, and affordable diagnosis facilities. Considering this opportunity, we have conducted two studies where we modified and tested six distinct deep learning models-VGG16, InceptionResNetV2, ResNet50, ResNet101, MobileNetV2, and VGG19-using transfer learning approaches. Our preliminary computational results show that the proposed modified InceptionResNetV2 and MobileNetV2 models perform best by achieving an accuracy ranging from 93% to 99%. Our findings are reinforced by recent academic work that demonstrates improved performance in constructing multiple disease diagnosis models using transfer learning approaches. Lastly, we further explain our model prediction using Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME), which play an essential role in identifying important features that characterize the onset of Monkeypox disease.

Class imbalance in a dataset is one of the major challenges that can significantly impact the performance of machine learning models resulting in biased predictions. Numerous techniques have been proposed to address class imbalanced problems, including, but not limited to, Oversampling, Undersampling, and cost-sensitive approaches. Due to its ability to generate synthetic data, oversampling techniques such as the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) is among the most widely used methodology by researchers. However, one of SMOTE's potential disadvantages is that newly created minor samples may overlap with major samples. As an effect, the probability of ML models' biased performance towards major classes increases. Recently, generative adversarial network (GAN) has garnered much attention due to its ability to create almost real samples. However, GAN is hard to train even though it has much potential. This study proposes two novel techniques: GAN-based Oversampling (GBO) and Support Vector Machine-SMOTE-GAN (SSG) to overcome the limitations of the existing oversampling approaches. The preliminary computational result shows that SSG and GBO performed better on the expanded imbalanced eight benchmark datasets than the original SMOTE. The study also revealed that the minor sample generated by SSG demonstrates Gaussian distributions, which is often difficult to achieve using original SMOTE.

Agriculture is of one of the few remaining sectors that is yet to receive proper attention from the machine learning community. The importance of datasets in the machine learning discipline cannot be overemphasized. The lack of standard and publicly available datasets related to agriculture impedes practitioners of this discipline to harness the full benefit of these powerful computational predictive tools and techniques. To improve this scenario, we develop, to the best of our knowledge, the first-ever standard, ready-to-use, and publicly available dataset of mango leaves. The images are collected from four mango orchards of Bangladesh, one of the top mango-growing countries of the world. The dataset contains 4000 images of about 1800 distinct leaves covering seven diseases. Although the dataset is developed using mango leaves of Bangladesh only, since we deal with diseases that are common across many countries, this dataset is likely to be applicable to identify mango diseases in other countries as well, thereby boosting mango yield. This dataset is expected to draw wide attention from machine learning researchers and practitioners in the field of automated agriculture.

The maximization of submodular functions is an NP-Hard problem for certain subclasses of functions, for which a simple greedy algorithm has been shown to guarantee a solution whose quality is within 1/2 of the optimal. When this algorithm is implemented in a distributed way, agents sequentially make decisions based on the decisions of all previous agents. This work explores how limited access to the decisions of previous agents affects the quality of the solution of the greedy algorithm. Specifically, we provide tight upper and lower bounds on how well the algorithm performs, as a function of the information available to each agent. Intuitively, the results show that performance roughly degrades proportionally to the size of the largest group of agents which make decisions independently. Additionally, we consider the case where a system designer is given a set of agents and a global limit on the amount of information that can be accessed. Our results show that the best designs partition the agents into equally-sized sets and allow agents to access the decisions of all previous agents within the same set.

We outline a general framework to use coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission technology in downlink multi-cell non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems considering distributed power allocation at each cell. In this framework, CoMP transmission is used for users experiencing strong receive-signals from multiple cells while each cell adopts NOMA for resource allocation to its active users. After a brief review of the working principles of different CoMP schemes, we identify their applicability and necessary conditions for their use in downlink multi-cell NOMA system. After that, we discuss different network scenarios with different spatial distributions of users and study the applicability of CoMP schemes in these network scenarios. To the end, a numerical performance evaluation is carried out for the proposed CoMP-NOMA systems and the results are compared with those for conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA)-based CoMP systems. The numerical results quantify the spectral efficiency gain of the proposed CoMP-NOMA models over CoMP-OMA. Finally, we conclude this article by identifying the potential major challenges in implementing CoMP-NOMA in future cellular systems.

We present a novel solution for Channel Assignment Problem (CAP) in Device-to-Device (D2D) wireless networks that takes into account the throughput estimation noise. CAP is known to be NP-hard in the literature and there is no practical optimal learning algorithm that takes into account the estimation noise. In this paper, we first formulate the CAP as a stochastic optimization problem to maximize the expected sum data rate. To capture the estimation noise, CAP is modeled as a noisy potential game, a novel notion we introduce in this paper. Then, we propose a distributed Binary Log-linear Learning Algorithm (BLLA) that converges to the optimal channel assignments. Convergence of BLLA is proved for bounded and unbounded noise. Proofs for fixed and decreasing temperature parameter of BLLA are provided. A sufficient number of estimation samples is given that guarantees the convergence to the optimal state. We assess the performance of BLLA by extensive simulations, which show that the sum data rate increases with the number of channels and users. Contrary to the better response algorithm, the proposed algorithm achieves the optimal channel assignments distributively even in presence of estimation noise.

We investigate the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) in downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular systems, where the total number of receive antennas at user equipment (UE) ends in a cell is more than the number of transmit antennas at the base station (BS). We first dynamically group the UE receive antennas into a number of clusters equal to or more than the number of BS transmit antennas. A single beamforming vector is then shared by all the receive antennas in a cluster. We propose a linear beamforming technique in which all the receive antennas can significantly cancel the inter-cluster interference. On the other hand, the receive antennas in each cluster are scheduled on power domain NOMA basis with SIC at the receiver ends. For inter-cluster and intra-cluster power allocation, we provide dynamic power allocation solutions with an objective to maximizing the overall cell capacity. An extensive performance evaluation is carried out for the proposed MIMO-NOMA system and the results are compared with those for conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA)-based MIMO systems and other existing MIMO-NOMA solutions. The numerical results quantify the capacity gain of the proposed MIMO-NOMA model over MIMO-OMA and other existing MIMO-NOMA solutions.

By combining the concepts of superposition coding at the transmitter(s) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver(s), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has recently emerged as a promising multiple access technique for 5G wireless technology. In this article, we first discuss the fundamentals of uplink and downlink NOMA transmissions and outline their key distinctions (in terms of implementation complexity, detection and decoding at the SIC receiver(s), incurred intra-cell and inter-cell interferences). Later, for both downlink and uplink NOMA, we theoretically derive the NOMA dominant condition for each individual user in a two-user NOMA cluster. NOMA dominant condition refers to the condition under which the spectral efficiency gains of NOMA are guaranteed compared to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA). The derived conditions provide direct insights on selecting appropriate users in two-user NOMA clusters. The conditions are distinct for uplink and downlink as well as for each individual user. Numerical results show the significance of the derived conditions for the user selection in uplink/downlink NOMA clusters and provide a comparison to the random user selection. Massive Machine-Type Communications (MTC) over cellular networks is expected to be an integral part of wireless "Smart City" applications. The Long Term Evolution (LTE)/LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology is a major candidate for provisioning of MTC applications. However, due to the diverse characteristics of payload size, transmission periodicity, power efficiency, and quality of service (QoS) requirement, MTC poses huge challenges to LTE/LTE-A technologies. In particular, efficient management of massive random access is one of the most critical challenges. In case of massive random access attempts, the probability of preamble collision drastically increases, thus the performance of LTE/LTE-A random access degrades sharply. In this context, this article reviews the current state-of-the-art proposals to control massive random access of MTC devices in LTE/LTE-A networks. The proposals are compared in terms of five major metrics, namely, access delay, access success rate, power efficiency, QoS guarantee, and the effect on Human-Type Communications (HTC). To this end, we propose a novel collision resolution random access model for massive MTC over LTE/LTE-A. Our proposed model basically resolves the preamble collisions instead of avoidance, and targets to manage massive and bursty access attempts. Simulations of our proposed model show huge improvements in random access success rate compared to the standard slotted-Aloha-based models. The new model can also coexist with existing LTE/LTE-A Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, and ensure high reliability and time-efficient network access.

In this paper, first we briefly describe the differences in the working principles of uplink and downlink NOMA transmissions. Then, for both uplink and downlink NOMA, we formulate a sum-throughput maximization problem in a cell such that the user clustering (i.e., grouping users into a single cluster or multiple clusters) and power allocations in NOMA cluster(s) can be optimized under transmission power constraints, minimum rate requirements of the users, and SIC constraints. Due to the combinatorial nature of the formulated mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem, we solve the problem in two steps, i.e., by first grouping users into clusters and then optimizing their respective power allocations. In particular, we propose a low-complexity sub-optimal user grouping scheme. The proposed scheme exploits the channel gain differences among users in a NOMA cluster and group them into a single cluster or multiple clusters in order to enhance the sum-throughput of the system. For a given set of NOMA clusters, we then derive the optimal power allocation policy that maximizes the sum throughput per NOMA cluster and in turn maximizes the overall system throughput. Using KKT optimality conditions, closed-form solutions for optimal power allocations are derived for any cluster size, considering both uplink and downlink NOMA systems. Numerical results compare the performance of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and illustrate the significance of NOMA in various network scenarios.
