Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is envisioned as a key technology for future wireless communications. In this paper, we consider a downlink monostatic ISAC system wherein the base station serves multiple communications users and sensing targets at the same time in the presence of clutter. We aim at both guaranteeing fairness among the communications users while simultaneously balancing the performances of communications and sensing functionalities. Therefore, we optimize the transmit and receive beamformers to maximize the weighted minimum signal-to-interference and clutter-plus-noise ratios. The design problem is highly challenging due to the non-smooth and non-convex objective function and strongly coupled variables. We propose two efficient methods to solve the problem. First, we rely on fractional programming and transform the original problem into convex sub-problems, which can be solved with standard convex optimization tools. To further reduce the complexity and dependence on numerical tools, we develop a novel approach to address the inherent non-smoothness of the formulated problem. Finally, the efficiencies of the proposed designs are demonstrated by numerical results.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) and D Band (110--170~GHz) frequencies are poised to play a pivotal role in the advancement of sixth-generation (6G) systems and beyond, owing to their ability to enhance performance metrics such as capacity, ultra-low latency, and spectral efficiency. This paper concentrates on deriving statistical insights into power, delay, and the number of paths based on measurements conducted across four distinct locations at a center frequency of 143.1 GHz. The findings underscore the suitability of various distributions in characterizing power behavior in line-of-sight (LOS) scenarios, including lognormal, Nakagami, gamma, and beta distributions, whereas the loglogistic distribution gives the optimal fit for power distribution in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. Moreover, the exponential distribution shows to be the most appropriate model for the delay distribution in both LOS and NLOS scenarios. In terms of the number of paths, observations indicate a tendency for the highest concentration within the 10 m to 30 m distance range between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx). These insights shed light on the statistical nature of D band propagation characteristics, which are vital for informing the design and optimization of future 6G communication systems

Wireless communication systems must increasingly support a multitude of machine-type communications (MTC) devices, thus calling for advanced strategies for active user detection (AUD). Recent literature has delved into AUD techniques based on compressed sensing, highlighting the critical role of signal sparsity. This study investigates the relationship between frequency diversity and signal sparsity in the AUD problem. Single-antenna users transmit multiple copies of non-orthogonal pilots across multiple frequency channels and the base station independently performs AUD in each channel using the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm. We note that, although frequency diversity may improve the likelihood of successful reception of the signals, it may also damage the channel sparsity level, leading to important trade-offs. We show that a sparser signal significantly benefits AUD, surpassing the advantages brought by frequency diversity in scenarios with limited temporal resources and/or high numbers of receive antennas. Conversely, with longer pilots and fewer receive antennas, investing in frequency diversity becomes more impactful, resulting in a tenfold AUD performance improvement.

To remotely monitor the physiological status of the human body, long range (LoRa) communication has been considered as an eminently suitable candidate for wireless body area networks (WBANs). Typically, a Rayleigh-lognormal fading channel is encountered by the LoRa links of the WBAN. In this context, we characterize the performance of the LoRa system in WBAN scenarios with an emphasis on the physical (PHY) layer and medium access control (MAC) layer in the face of Rayleigh-lognormal fading channels and the same spreading factor interference. Specifically, closed-form approximate bit error probability (BEP) expressions are derived for the LoRa system. The results show that increasing the SF and reducing the interference efficiently mitigate the shadowing effects. Moreover, in the quest for the most suitable MAC protocol for LoRa based WBANs, three MAC protocols are critically appraised, namely the pure ALOHA, slotted ALOHA, and carrier-sense multiple access. The coverage probability, energy efficiency, throughput, and system delay of the three MAC protocols are analyzed in Rayleigh-lognormal fading channel. Furthermore, the performance of the equal-interval-based and equal-area-based schemes is analyzed to guide the choice of the SF. Our simulation results confirm the accuracy of the mathematical analysis and provide some useful insights for the future design of LoRa based WBANs.

Beamforming is a signal processing technique where an array of antenna elements can be steered to transmit and receive radio signals in a specific direction. The usage of millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) beamforming are considered as the key innovations of 5th Generation (5G) and beyond communication systems. The technique initially performs a beam alignment procedure, followed by data transfer in the aligned directions between the transmitter and the receiver. Traditionally, beam alignment involves periodical and exhaustive beam sweeping at both transmitter and the receiver, which is a slow process causing extra communication overhead with MIMO and massive MIMO radio units. In applications such as beam tracking, angular velocity, beam steering etc., the beam alignment procedure is optimized by estimating the beam directions using first order polynomial approximations. Recent learning-based SOTA strategies for fast mmWave beam alignment also require exploration over exhaustive beam pairs during the training procedure, causing overhead to learning strategies for higher antenna configurations. In this work, we first optimize the beam alignment cost functions e.g. the data rate, to reduce the beam sweeping overhead by applying polynomial approximations of its partial derivatives which can then be solved as a system of polynomial equations using well-known tools from algebraic geometry. At this point, a question arises: 'what is a good polynomial approximation?' In this work, we attempt to obtain a 'good polynomial approximation'. Preliminary experiments indicate that our estimated polynomial approximations attain a so-called sweet-spot in terms of the solver speed and accuracy, when evaluated on test beamforming problems.

Joint communications and sensing (JCAS) is envisioned as a key feature in future wireless communications networks. In massive MIMO-JCAS systems, hybrid beamforming (HBF) is typically employed to achieve satisfactory beamforming gains with reasonable hardware cost and power consumption. Due to the coupling of the analog and digital precoders in HBF and the dual objective in JCAS, JCAS-HBF design problems are very challenging and usually require highly complex algorithms. In this paper, we propose a fast HBF design for JCAS based on deep unfolding to optimize a tradeoff between the communications rate and sensing accuracy. We first derive closed-form expressions for the gradients of the communications and sensing objectives with respect to the precoders and demonstrate that the magnitudes of the gradients pertaining to the analog precoder are typically smaller than those associated with the digital precoder. Based on this observation, we propose a modified projected gradient ascent (PGA) method with significantly improved convergence. We then develop a deep unfolded PGA scheme that efficiently optimizes the communications-sensing performance tradeoff with fast convergence thanks to the well-trained hyperparameters. In doing so, we preserve the interpretability and flexibility of the optimizer while leveraging data to improve performance. Finally, our simulations demonstrate the potential of the proposed deep unfolded method, which achieves up to 33.5% higher communications sum rate and 2.5 dB lower beampattern error compared with the conventional design based on successive convex approximation and Riemannian manifold optimization. Furthermore, it attains up to a 65% reduction in run time and computational complexity with respect to the PGA procedure without unfolding.

We consider unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless systems where downlink communications between a multi-antenna UAV and multiple users are assisted by a hybrid active-passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We aim at a fairness design of two typical UAV-enabled networks, namely the static-UAV network where the UAV is deployed at a fixed location to serve all users at the same time, and the mobile-UAV network which employs the time division multiple access protocol. In both networks, our goal is to maximize the minimum rate among users through jointly optimizing the UAV's location/trajectory, transmit beamformer, and RIS coefficients. The resulting problems are highly nonconvex due to a strong coupling between the involved variables. We develop efficient algorithms based on block coordinate ascend and successive convex approximation to effectively solve these problems in an iterative manner. In particular, in the optimization of the mobile-UAV network, closed-form solutions to the transmit beamformer and RIS passive coefficients are derived. Numerical results show that a hybrid RIS equipped with only 4 active elements and a power budget of 0 dBm offers an improvement of 38%-63% in minimum rate, while that achieved by a passive RIS is only about 15%, with the same total number of elements.

In conventional joint communications and sensing (JCAS) designs for multi-carrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the dual-functional waveforms are often optimized for the whole frequency band, resulting in limited communications--sensing performance tradeoff. To overcome the limitation, we propose employing a subset of subcarriers for JCAS, while the communications function is performed over all the subcarriers. This offers more degrees of freedom to enhance the communications performance under a given sensing accuracy. We first formulate the rate maximization under the sensing accuracy constraint to optimize the beamformers and JCAS subcarriers. The problem is solved via Riemannian manifold optimization and closed-form solutions. Numerical results for an 8x4 MIMO system with 64 subcarriers show that compared to the conventional subcarrier sharing scheme, the proposed scheme employing 16 JCAS subcarriers offers 60% improvement in the achievable communications rate at the signal-to-noise ratio of 10 dB. Meanwhile, this scheme generates the sensing beampattern with the same quality as the conventional JCAS design.

We investigate the beam squint effect in uniform planar arrays (UPAs) and propose an efficient hybrid beamforming (HBF) design to mitigate the beam squint in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems operating at terahertz band. We first analyze the array gain and derive the closed-form beam squint ratio that characterizes the severity of the beam squint effect on UPAs. The effect is shown to be more severe with a higher fractional bandwidth, while it can be significantly mitigated when the shape of a UPA approaches a square. We then focus on the HBF design that maximizes the system spectral efficiency. The design problem is challenging due to the frequency-flat nature and hardware constraints of the analog beamformer. We overcome the challenges by proposing an efficient decoupling design in which the digital and analog beamformers admit closed-form solutions, which facilitate practical implementations. Numerical results validate our analysis and show that the proposed HBF design is robust to beam squint, and thus, it outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in wideband massive MIMO systems.

Hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is an attractive technology for realizing extreme massive MIMO systems envisioned for future wireless communications in a scalable and power-efficient manner. However, the fact that hybrid MIMO systems implement part of their beamforming in analog and part in digital makes the optimization of their beampattern notably more challenging compared with conventional fully digital MIMO. Consequently, recent years have witnessed a growing interest in using data-aided artificial intelligence (AI) tools for hybrid beamforming design. This article reviews candidate strategies to leverage data to improve real-time hybrid beamforming design. We discuss the architectural constraints and characterize the core challenges associated with hybrid beamforming optimization. We then present how these challenges are treated via conventional optimization, and identify different AI-aided design approaches. These can be roughly divided into purely data-driven deep learning models and different forms of deep unfolding techniques for combining AI with classical optimization. We provide a systematic comparative study between existing approaches including both numerical evaluations and qualitative measures. We conclude by presenting future research opportunities associated with the incorporation of AI in hybrid MIMO systems.

Hybrid beamforming (HBF) is a key enabler for wideband terahertz (THz) massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) communications systems. A core challenge with designing HBF systems stems from the fact their application often involves a non-convex, highly complex optimization of large dimensions. In this paper, we propose HBF schemes that leverage data to enable efficient designs for both the fully-connected HBF (FC-HBF) and dynamic sub-connected HBF (SC-HBF) architectures. We develop a deep unfolding framework based on factorizing the optimal fully digital beamformer into analog and digital terms and formulating two corresponding equivalent least squares (LS) problems. Then, the digital beamformer is obtained via a closed-form LS solution, while the analog beamformer is obtained via ManNet, a lightweight sparsely-connected deep neural network based on unfolding projected gradient descent. Incorporating ManNet into the developed deep unfolding framework leads to the ManNet-based FC-HBF scheme. We show that the proposed ManNet can also be applied to SC-HBF designs after determining the connections between the radio frequency chain and antennas. We further develop a simplified version of ManNet, referred to as subManNet, that directly produces the sparse analog precoder for SC-HBF architectures. Both networks are trained with an unsupervised training procedure. Numerical results verify that the proposed ManNet/subManNet-based HBF approaches outperform the conventional model-based and deep unfolded counterparts with very low complexity and a fast run time. For example, in a simulation with 128 transmit antennas, it attains a slightly higher spectral efficiency than the Riemannian manifold scheme, but over 1000 times faster and with a complexity reduction of more than by a factor of six (6).

To enable an intelligent, programmable and multi-vendor radio access network (RAN) for 6G networks, considerable efforts have been made in standardization and development of open RAN (O-RAN). So far, however, the applicability of O-RAN in controlling and optimizing RAN functions has not been widely investigated. In this paper, we jointly optimize the flow-split distribution, congestion control and scheduling (JFCS) to enable an intelligent traffic steering application in O-RAN. Combining tools from network utility maximization and stochastic optimization, we introduce a multi-layer optimization framework that provides fast convergence, long-term utility-optimality and significant delay reduction compared to the state-of-the-art and baseline RAN approaches. Our main contributions are three-fold: i) we propose the novel JFCS framework to efficiently and adaptively direct traffic to appropriate radio units; ii) we develop low-complexity algorithms based on the reinforcement learning, inner approximation and bisection search methods to effectively solve the JFCS problem in different time scales; and iii) the rigorous theoretical performance results are analyzed to show that there exists a scaling factor to improve the tradeoff between delay and utility-optimization. Collectively, the insights in this work will open the door towards fully automated networks with enhanced control and flexibility. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in terms of the convergence rate, long-term utility-optimality and delay reduction.

In this paper, we consider an IRS-assisted multigroup multicast (IRS-MGMC) system in a multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, for which the related existing literature is rather limited. In particular, we aim to jointly design the transmit beamformers and IRS phase shifts to maximize the sum rate of the system under consideration. In order to obtain a numerically efficient solution to the formulated non-convex optimization problem, we propose an alternating projected gradient (APG) method where each iteration admits a closed-form and is shown to be superior to a known solution that is derived from the majorization-minimization (MM) method in terms of both achievable sum rate and required complexity, i.e., run time. In particular, we show that the complexity of the proposed APG method grows linearly with the number of IRS tiles, while that of the known solution in comparison grows with the third power of the number of IRS tiles. The numerical results reported in this paper extend our understanding on the achievable rates of large-scale IRS-assisted multigroup multicast systems.

Grant-free protocols exploiting compressed sensing (CS) multi-user detection (MUD) are appealing for solving the random access problem in massive machine-type communications (mMTC) with sporadic device activity. Such protocols would greatly benefit from a prior deterministic knowledge of the sparsity level, i.e., instantaneous number of simultaneously active devices $K$. Aiming at this, herein we introduce a framework relying on coordinated pilot transmissions (CPT) over a short phase at the beginning of the transmission block for detecting $K$ in mMTC scenarios under Rayleigh fading. CPT can be implemented either as: i) U-CPT, which exploits only uplink transmissions, or A-CPT, which includes also downlink transmissions for channel state information (CSI) acquisition that resolve fading uncertainty. We discuss two specific implementations of A-CPT: ii) A-CPT-F, which implements CSI-based phase corrections while leveraging the same statistical inverse power control used by U-CPT, and iii) A-CPT-D, which implements a dynamic CSI-based inverse power control, although it requires some active devices to remain in silence if their corresponding channels are too faded. We derive a signal sparsity level detector for each CPT mechanism by relaxing the original integer detection/classification problem to an estimation problem in the continuous real domain followed by a rounding operation. We show that the variance of the relaxed estimator increases with $K^2$ and $K$ when operating with U-CPT and A-CPT mechanisms, respectively. The distribution of the estimators under U-CPT, A-CPT-F and A-CPT-D is found to follow an exponential, Gaussian, and Student's $t-$like distribution, respectively. Analyses evince the superiority of A-CPT-D, which is also corroborated via numerical results. We reveal several interesting trade-offs and highlight potential research directions.

Upcoming beyond fifth generation (5G) communications systems aim at further enhancing key performance indicators and fully supporting brand new use cases by embracing emerging techniques, e.g., reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), integrated communication, localization, and sensing, and mmWave/THz communications. The wireless intelligence empowered by state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques has been widely considered at the transceivers, and now the paradigm is deemed to be shifted to the smart control of radio propagation environment by virtue of RISs. In this article, we argue that to harness the full potential of RISs, localization and communication must be tightly coupled. This is in sharp contrast to 5G and earlier generations, where localization was a minor additional service. To support this, we first introduce the fundamentals of RIS mmWave channel modeling, followed by RIS channel state information acquisition and link establishment. Then, we deal with the connection between localization and communications, from a separate and joint perspective.

To mitigate computational power gap between the network core and edges, mobile edge computing (MEC) is poised to play a fundamental role in future generations of wireless networks. In this letter, we consider a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission model to maximize the worst task to be offloaded among all users to the network edge server. A provably convergent and efficient algorithm is developed to solve the considered non-convex optimization problem for maximizing the minimum number of offloaded bits in a multi-user NOMAMEC system. Compared to the approach of optimized orthogonal multiple access (OMA), for given MEC delay, power and energy limits, the NOMA-based system considerably outperforms its OMA-based counterpart in MEC settings. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm for NOMA-based MEC is particularly useful for delay sensitive applications.

Inspired by the remarkable learning and prediction performance of deep neural networks (DNNs), we apply one special type of DNN framework, known as model-driven deep unfolding neural network, to reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) single-input multiple-output (SIMO) systems. We focus on uplink cascaded channel estimation, where known and fixed base station combining and RIS phase control matrices are considered for collecting observations. To boost the estimation performance and reduce the training overhead, the inherent channel sparsity of mmWave channels is leveraged in the deep unfolding method. It is verified that the proposed deep unfolding network architecture can outperform the least squares (LS) method with a relatively smaller training overhead and online computational complexity.

In this paper, we utilize tools from stochastic geometry to estimate the interference propagation via reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the millimeter wave (mmWave, 30-300 GHz) band and specifically on the D band (110-170 GHz). The RISs have been of great interest lately to maximize the channel gains in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) communication situations. We derive expressions for stochastic interference level in RIS powered systems and validate those with simulations. It will be shown that the interference levels via RIS link are rather small compared to the designed RIS link or the LOS interference as the random interference loses significant part of the RIS gain. We also analyse the validity of far field channel and antenna gains in the near field of a large array. It is shown that, while the high frequency systems require large arrays that push the far field far away from the antenna, the far field equations are very accurate up to about half way of the near field.

Various benefits brought by deploying one or multiple RISs include increased spectrum and energy efficiency, enhanced connectivity, extended communication coverage, reduced complexity at transceivers, and even improved localization accuracy. However, to unleash their full potential, fundamentals related to RISs, ranging from physical-layer (PHY) modelling to RIS phase control, need to be addressed thoroughly. In this paper, we provide an overview of some timely research problems related to the RIS technology, i.e., PHY modelling (including also physics), channel estimation, potential RIS architectures, and RIS phase control (via both model-based and data-driven approaches), along with recent numerical results. A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can shape the radio propagation environment by virtue of changing the impinging electromagnetic waves towards any desired directions, thus, breaking the general Snell's reflection law. However, the optimal control of the RIS requires perfect channel state information (CSI) of the individual channels that link the base station (BS) and the mobile station (MS) to each other via the RIS. Thereby super-resolution channel (parameter) estimation needs to be efficiently conducted at the BS or MS with CSI feedback to the RIS controller. In this paper, we adopt a two-stage channel estimation scheme for RIS-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO systems without a direct BS-MS channel, using atomic norm minimization to sequentially estimate the channel parameters, i.e., angular parameters, angle differences, and products of propagation path gains. We evaluate the mean square error of the parameter estimates, the RIS gains, the average effective spectrum efficiency bound, and average squared distance between the designed beamforming and combining vectors and the optimal ones. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves super-resolution estimation compared to the existing benchmark schemes, thus offering promising performance in the subsequent data transmission phase.

We investigate the coordinated multi-point noncoherent joint transmission (JT) in dense small cell networks. The goal is to design beamforming vectors for macro cell and small cell base stations (BSs) such that the weighted sum rate of the system is maximized, subject to a total transmit power at individual BSs. The optimization problem is inherently nonconvex and intractable, making it difficult to explore the full potential performance of the scheme. To this end, we first propose an algorithm to find a globally optimal solution based on the generic monotonic branch reduce and bound optimization framework. Then, for a more computationally efficient method, we adopt the inner approximation (InAp) technique to efficiently derive a locally optimal solution, which is numerically shown to achieve near-optimal performance. In addition, for decentralized networks such as those comprising of multi-access edge computing servers, we develop an algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers, which distributively implements the InAp-based solution. Our main conclusion is that the noncoherent JT is a promising transmission scheme for dense small cell networks, since it can exploit the densitification gain, outperforms the coordinated beamforming, and is amenable to distributed implementation.

Future smart vehicles will incorporate high-data-rate communications and high-resolution radar sensing capabilities operating in the millimeter-wave and higher frequencies. These two systems are preparing to share and reuse a lot of common functionalities, such as steerable millimeter-wave antenna arrays. Motivated by this growing overlap, and advanced further by the space and cost constraints, the vehicular community is pursuing a vision of unified vehicular communications and radar sensing, which represents a major paradigm shift for next-generation connected and self-driving cars. This article outlines a path to materialize this decisive transformation. We begin by reviewing the latest developments in hybrid vehicular communications and radar systems, and then propose a concept of unified channel access over millimeter-wave and higher frequencies. Our supporting system-level performance characterization relies upon real-life measurements and massive ray-based modeling to confirm the significant improvements brought by our proposal to mitigating the interference and deafness effects. Since our results aim to open the door to unified vehicular communications and radar sensing, we conclude by outlining the potential research directions in this rapidly developing field.

The present white paper focuses on the system requirements of TERRANOVA. Initially details the key use cases for the TERRANOVA technology and presents the description of the network architecture. In more detail, the use cases are classified into two categories, namely backhaul & fronthaul and access and small cell backhaul. The first category refers to fibre extender, point-to-point and redundancy applications, whereas the latter is designed to support backup connection for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), internet of things (IoT) dense environments, data centres, indoor wireless access, ad hoc networks, and last mile access. Then, it provides the networks architecture for the TERRANOVA system as well as the network elements that need to be deployed. The use cases are matched to specific technical scenarios, namely outdoor fixed point-to-point (P2P), outdoor/indoor individual point-to-multipoint (P2MP), and outdoor/indoor "quasi"-omnidirection, and the key performance requirements of each scenario are identified. Likewise, we present the breakthrough novel technology concepts, including the joint design of baseband signal processing for the complete optical and wireless link, the development of broadband and spectrally efficient RF-frontends for frequencies >275 GHz, as well as channel modelling, waveforms, antenna array and multiple-access schemes design, which we are going to use in order to satisfy the presented requirements. Next, an overview of the required new functionalities in both physical (PHY) layer and medium access control (MAC) layers in the TERRANOVA system architecture will be given. Finally, the individual enablers of the TERRANOVA system are combined to develop particular candidate architectures for each of the three technical scenarios.

We consider a multi-pair amplify-and-forward relay network where the energy-constrained relays adopting time-switching protocol harvest energy from the radio frequency signals transmitted by the users for assisting user data transmission. Both one-way and two-way relaying techniques are investigated. Aiming at energy efficiency (EE) fairness among the user pairs, we construct an energy consumption model incorporating rate-dependent signal processing power, the dependence on output power level of power amplifiers' efficiency, and nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) circuits. Then we formulate the max-min EE fairness problems in which the data rates, users' transmit power, relays' processing coefficient, and EH time are jointly optimized under the constraints on the quality of service and users' maximum transmit power. To achieve efficient suboptimal solutions to these nonconvex problems, we devise monotonic descent algorithms based on the inner approximation (IA) framework, which solve a second-order-cone program in each iteration. To further simplify the designs, we propose an approach combining IA and zero-forcing beamforming, which eliminates inter-pair interference and reduces the numbers of variables and required iterations. Finally, extensive numerical results are presented to validate the proposed approaches. More specifically, the results demonstrate that ignoring the realistic aspects of power consumption might degrade the performance remarkably, and jointly designing parameters involved could significantly enhance the energy efficiency.

We study downlink of multiantenna cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) with finite-capacity fronthaul links. The aim is to propose joint designs of beamforming and remote radio head (RRH)-user association, subject to constraints on users' quality-of-service, limited capacity of fronthaul links and transmit power, to maximize the system energy efficiency. To cope with the limited-capacity fronthaul we consider the problem of RRH-user association to select a subset of users that can be served by each RRH. Moreover, different to the conventional power consumption models, we take into account the dependence of baseband signal processing power on the data rate, as well as the dynamics of the efficiency of power amplifiers. The considered problem leads to a mixed binary integer program (MBIP) which is difficult to solve. Our first contribution is to derive a globally optimal solution for the considered problem by customizing a discrete branch-reduce-and-bound (DBRB) approach. Since the global optimization method requires a high computational effort, we further propose two suboptimal solutions able to achieve the near optimal performance but with much reduced complexity. To this end, we transform the design problem into continuous (but inherently nonconvex) programs by two approaches: penalty and \ell_{0}-approximation methods. These resulting continuous nonconvex problems are then solved by the successive convex approximation framework. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

This paper studies the energy efficiency and sum rate trade-off for coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output systems. We first consider a conventional network energy efficiency maximization (EEmax) problem by jointly optimizing the transmit beamformers and antennas selected to be used in transmission. We also account for per-antenna maximum power constraints to avoid non-linear distortion in power amplifiers and user-specific minimum rate constraints to guarantee certain service levels and fairness. To be energy-efficient, transmit antenna selection is employed. It eventually leads to a mixed-Boolean fractional program. We then propose two different approaches to solve this difficult problem. The first solution is based on a novel modeling technique that produces a tight continuous relaxation. The second approach is based on sparsity-inducing method, which does not require the introduction of any Boolean variable. We also investigate the trade-off between the energy efficiency and sum rate by proposing two different formulations. In the first formulation, we propose a new metric that is the ratio of the sum rate and the so-called weighted power. Specifically, this metric reduces to EEmax when the weight is 1, and to sum rate maximization when the weight is 0. In the other method, we treat the trade-off problem as a multi-objective optimization for which a scalarization approach is adopted. Numerical results illustrate significant achievable energy efficiency gains over the method where the antenna selection is not employed. The effect of antenna selection on the energy efficiency and sum rate trade-off is also demonstrated.

This article discusses the basic system architecture for terahertz (THz) wireless links with bandwidths of more than 50 GHz into optical networks. New design principles and breakthrough technologies are required in order to demonstrate Tbps data-rates at near zero-latency using the proposed system concept. Specifically, we present the concept of designing the baseband signal processing for both the optical and wireless link and using an end-to-end (E2E) error correction approach for the combined link. We provide two possible electro-optical baseband interface architectures, namely transparent optical-link and digital-link architectures, which are currently under investigation. THz wireless link requirements are given as well as the main principles and research directions for the development of a new generation of transceiver frontends, which will be capable of operating at ultra-high spectral efficiency by employing higher-order modulation schemes. Moreover, we discuss the need for developing a novel THz network information theory framework, which will take into account the channel characteristics and the nature of interference in the THz band. We provide an overview of transmit beamforming designs for various energy efficiency (EE) metrics including maximizing the overall network EE, sum weighted EE and fairness EE. Generally, an EE optimization problem is a nonconvex program for which finding the globally optimal solutions requires high computational effort. Consequently, several low-complexity suboptimal approaches have been proposed. Here we sum up the main concepts of the recently proposed algorithms based on the state-of-the-art successive convex approximation (SCA) framework. Moreover, we discuss the application to the newly posted EE problems including new EE metrics and power consumption models. Furthermore, distributed implementation developed based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for the provided solutions is also discussed. For the sake of completeness, we provide numerical comparison of the SCA based approaches and the conventional solutions developed based on parametric transformations (PTs). In this article, we review the recent progress in THz propagation modeling, antenna and testbed designs, and propose a step-by-step roadmap for wireless THz Ethernet extension for indoor environments. As a side effect, the described concept provides a second life to the currently underutilized Ethernet infrastructure by using it as a universally available backbone. By applying real THz band propagation, reflection, and scattering measurements as well as ray-tracing simulations of a typical office, we analyze two representative scenarios at 300 GHz and 1.25 THz frequencies illustrating that extremely high rates can be achieved with realistic system parameters at room scales.

Downlink beamforming techniques with low signaling overhead are proposed for joint processing coordinated (JP) multi-point transmission. The objective is to maximize the weighted sum rate within joint transmission clusters. As the considered weighted sum rate maximization is a non-convex problem, successive convex approximation techniques, based on weighted mean-squared error minimization, are applied to devise algorithms with tractable computational complexity. Decentralized algorithms are proposed to enable JP even with limited backhaul connectivity. These algorithms rely provide a variety of alternatives for signaling overhead, computational complexity and convergence behavior. Time division duplexing is exploited to design transceiver training techniques for two scenarios: stream specific estimation and direct estimation. In the stream specific estimation, the base station and user equipment estimate all of the stream specific precoded pilots individually and construct the transmit/receive covariance matrices based on these pilot estimates. With the direct estimation, only the intended transmission is separately estimated and the covariance matrices constructed directly from the aggregate system-wide pilots. The impact of feedback/backhaul signaling quantization is considered, in order to further reduce the signaling overhead. Also, user admission is being considered for time-correlated channels. The enhanced transceiver convergence rate enables periodic beamformer reinitialization, which greatly improves the achieved system performance in dense networks.

The goal is to use the transmission resources more efficiently to improve the energy efficiency, when the users are equipped with multiple antennas. This paper considers a multicell downlink channel in which multiple base stations (BSs) cooperatively serve users by jointly precoding shared data transported from a central processor over limited-capacity backhaul links. We jointly design the beamformers and BS-user link selection so as to maximize the sum rate subject to user-specific signal-to-interference-noise (SINR) requirements, per-BS backhaul capacity and per-BS power constraints. As existing solutions for the considered problem are suboptimal and their optimality remains unknown due to the lack of globally optimal solutions, we characterized this gap by proposing a globally optimal algorithm for the problem of interest. Specifically, the proposed method is customized from a generic framework of a branch and bound algorithm applied to discrete monotonic optimization. We show that the proposed algorithm converges after a finite number of iterations, and can serve as a benchmark for existing suboptimal solutions and those that will be developed for similar contexts in the future. In this regard, we numerically compare the proposed optimal solution to a current state-of-the-art, which show that this suboptimal method only attains 70% to 90% of the optimal performance.

This paper considers a downlink transmission of cloud radio access network (C-RAN) in which precoded baseband signals at a common baseband unit are compressed before being forwarded to radio units (RUs) through limited fronthaul capacity links. We investigate the joint design of precoding, multivariate compression and RU-user selection which maximizes the energy efficiency of downlink C-RAN networks. The considered problem is inherently a rank-constrained mixed Boolean nonconvex program for which a globally optimal solution is difficult and computationally expensive to find. In order to derive practically appealing solutions, we invoke some useful relaxation and transformation techniques to arrive at a more tractable (but still nonconvex) continuous program. To solve the relaxation problem, we propose an iterative procedure based on DC algorithms which is provably convergent. Numerical results demonstrate the superior of the proposed solution in terms of achievable energy efficiency compared to existing schemes.

While the Internet of Things (IoT) has made significant progress along the lines of supporting individual machine-type applications, it is only recently that the importance of people as an integral component of the overall IoT infrastructure has started to be fully recognized. Several powerful concepts have emerged to facilitate this vision, whether involving the human context whenever required or directly impacting user behavior and decisions. As these become the stepping stones to develop the IoT into a novel people-centric utility, this paper outlines a path to materialize this decisive transformation. We begin by reviewing the latest progress in human-aware wireless networking, then classify the attractive human-machine applications and summarize the enabling IoT radio technologies. We continue with a unique system-level performance characterization of a representative urban IoT scenario and quantify the benefits of keeping people in the loop on various levels. Our comprehensive numerical results confirm the significant gains that have been made available with tighter user involvement, and also corroborate the development of efficient incentivization mechanisms, thereby opening the door to future commoditization of the global people-centric IoT utility.

This paper studies energy-efficient coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output systems. We aim at maximizing the network energy efficiency by taking into account the fact that some of the radio frequency chains can be switched off in order to save power. We consider the antenna specific maximum power constraints to avoid non-linear distortion in power amplifiers and user-specific quality of service (QoS) constraints to guarantee a certain QoS levels. We first introduce binary antenna selection variables and use the perspective formulation to model the relation between them and the beamformers. Subsequently, we propose a new formulation which reduces the feasible set of the continuous relaxation, resulting in better performance compared to the original perspective formulation based problem. However, the resulting optimization problem is a mixed-Boolean non-convex fractional program, which is difficult to solve. We follow the standard continuous relaxation of the binary antenna selection variables, and then reformulate the problem such that it is amendable to successive convex approximation. Thereby, solving the continuous relaxation mostly results in near-binary solution. To recover the binary variables from the continuous relaxation, we switch off all the antennas for which the continuous values are smaller than a small threshold. Numerical results illustrate the superior convergence result and significant achievable gains in terms of energy efficiency with the proposed algorithm.

Digital predistortion (DPD) is a widely adopted baseband processing technique in current radio transmitters. While DPD can effectively suppress unwanted spurious spectrum emissions stemming from imperfections of analog RF and baseband electronics, it also introduces extra processing complexity and poses challenges on efficient and flexible implementations, especially for mobile cellular transmitters, considering their limited computing power compared to basestations. In this paper, we present high data rate implementations of broadband DPD on modern embedded processors, such as mobile GPU and multicore CPU, by taking advantage of emerging parallel computing techniques for exploiting their computing resources. We further verify the suppression effect of DPD experimentally on real radio hardware platforms. Performance evaluation results of our DPD design demonstrate the high efficacy of modern general purpose mobile processors on accelerating DPD processing for a mobile transmitter.

As a wide class of resource management problems in wireless communications are nonconvex and even NP-hard in many cases, finding globally optimal solutions to these problems is of little practical interest. Towards more pragmatic approaches, there is a rich literature on iterative methods aiming at finding a solution satisfying necessary optimality conditions to these problems. These approaches have been derived under several similar mathematical frameworks such as inner approximation algorithm, concave-convex procedure, majorization-minimization algorithm, and successive convex approximation (SCA). However, a large portion of existing algorithms arrive at a relatively generic program at each iteration, which is less computationally efficient compared to a more standard convex formulation. This paper proposes \emph{numerically efficient} transformations and approximations for SCA-based methods to deal with nonconvexity in wireless communications design. More specifically, the central goal is to show that various nonconvex problems in wireless communications can be iteratively solved by conic quadratic optimization. We revisit various examples to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approximations. Theoretical complexity analysis and numerical results show the superior efficiency in terms of computational cost of our proposed solutions compared to the existing ones.

This paper proposes energy-efficient coordinated beamforming strategies for multi-cell multi-user multiple-input single-output system. We consider a practical power consumption model, where part of the consumed power depends on the base station or user specific data rates due to coding, decoding and backhaul. This is different from the existing approaches where the base station power consumption has been assumed to be a convex or linear function of the transmit powers. Two optimization criteria are considered, namely network energy efficiency maximization and weighted sum energy efficiency maximization. We develop successive convex approximation based algorithms to tackle these difficult nonconvex problems. We further propose decentralized implementations for the considered problems, in which base stations perform parallel and distributed computation based on local channel state information and limited backhaul information exchange. The decentralized approaches admit closed-form solutions and can be implemented without invoking a generic external convex solver. We also show an example of the pilot contamination effect on the energy efficiency using a heuristic pilot allocation strategy. The numerical results are provided to demonstrate that the rate dependent power consumption has a large impact on the system energy efficiency, and, thus, has to be taken into account when devising energy-efficient transmission strategies. The significant gains of the proposed algorithms over the conventional low-complexity beamforming algorithms are also illustrated.

Degrees of freedom (DoF) is studied in the downlink of a heterogenous wireless network modeled as a two-layered interference network. The first layer of the interference network is the backhaul layer between macro base stations (MB) and small cell base stations (SB), which is modeled as a Wyner type linear network. The second layer is the transmission layer between SBs and mobile terminals (MTs), which is modeled as a linear Wyner $L_T$ network, i.e., each MT is connected to $L_T+1$ SBs. The SBs are assumed to be half-duplex, thus restricting the per user degrees of freedom (puDoF) in the system to $1/2$. The puDoF can be further restricted by the number of antennas at the MB. For $L_T \in \{1,2\}$, the optimal puDoF can be achieved by using simple interference avoidance schemes. The increase in the connectivity of transmission layer beyond $L_T=2$ limits the achievable puDoF using only zero-forcing schemes to less than 1/2, even in the presence of large number of antennas at each MB but the optimal puDoF can be achieved by making each message available at multiple SBs. This is done by sending an appropriate linear combination to the SB to zero-force interference at the intended user. The maximum per user DoF of 1/2 can be achieved in the linear network with sufficient number of antennas using only interference avoidance schemes. These results are also extended to a more realistic hexagonal cellular model as well.

This paper summarizes the design of a programmable processor with transport triggered architecture (TTA) for decoding LDPC and turbo codes. The processor architecture is designed in such a manner that it can be programmed for LDPC or turbo decoding for the purpose of internetworking and roaming between different networks. The standard trellis based maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm is used for turbo decoding. Unlike most other implementations, a supercode based sum-product algorithm is used for the check node message computation for LDPC decoding. This approach ensures the highest hardware utilization of the processor architecture for the two different algorithms. Up to our knowledge, this is the first attempt to design a TTA processor for the LDPC decoder. The processor is programmed with a high level language to meet the time-to-market requirement. The optimization techniques and the usage of the function units for both algorithms are explained in detail. The processor achieves 22.64 Mbps throughput for turbo decoding with a single iteration and 10.12 Mbps throughput for LDPC decoding with five iterations for a clock frequency of 200 MHz.
