Question difficulty estimation remains a multifaceted challenge in educational and assessment settings. Traditional approaches often focus on surface-level linguistic features or learner comprehension levels, neglecting the intricate interplay of factors contributing to question complexity. This paper presents a novel framework for domain-specific question difficulty estimation, leveraging a suite of NLP techniques and knowledge graph analysis. We introduce four key parameters: Topic Retrieval Cost, Topic Salience, Topic Coherence, and Topic Superficiality, each capturing a distinct facet of question complexity within a given subject domain. These parameters are operationalized through topic modelling, knowledge graph analysis, and information retrieval techniques. A model trained on these features demonstrates the efficacy of our approach in predicting question difficulty. By operationalizing these parameters, our framework offers a novel approach to question complexity estimation, paving the way for more effective question generation, assessment design, and adaptive learning systems across diverse academic disciplines.

In the contemporary digital era, the Internet functions as an unparalleled catalyst, dismantling geographical and linguistic barriers particularly evident in texting. This evolution facilitates global communication, transcending physical distances and fostering dynamic cultural exchange. A notable trend is the widespread use of transliteration, where the English alphabet is employed to convey messages in native languages, posing a unique challenge for language technology in accurately detecting the source language. This paper addresses this challenge through a dataset of phone text messages in Hindi and Russian transliterated into English utilizing BERT for language classification and Google Translate API for transliteration conversion. The research pioneers innovative approaches to identify and convert transliterated text, navigating challenges in the diverse linguistic landscape of digital communication. Emphasizing the pivotal role of comprehensive datasets for training Large Language Models LLMs like BERT, our model showcases exceptional proficiency in accurately identifying and classifying languages from transliterated text. With a validation accuracy of 99% our models robust performance underscores its reliability. With the surging inclination towards carrying out tasks on computational devices and digital mediums, any method that converts a task that was previously carried out manually, to a digitized version, is always welcome. Irrespective of the various documentation tasks that can be done online today, there are still many applications and domains where handwritten text is inevitable, which makes the digitization of handwritten documents a very essential task. Over the past decades, there has been extensive research on offline handwritten text recognition. In the recent past, most of these attempts have shifted to Machine learning and Deep learning based approaches. In order to design more complex and deeper networks, and ensure stellar performances, it is essential to have larger quantities of annotated data. Most of the databases present for offline handwritten text recognition today, have either been manually annotated or semi automatically annotated with a lot of manual involvement. These processes are very time consuming and prone to human errors. To tackle this problem, we present an innovative, complete end-to-end pipeline, that annotates offline handwritten manuscripts written in both print and cursive English, using Deep Learning and User Interaction techniques. This novel method, which involves an architectural combination of a detection system built upon a state-of-the-art text detection model, and a custom made Deep Learning model for the recognition system, is combined with an easy-to-use interactive interface, aiming to improve the accuracy of the detection, segmentation, serialization and recognition phases, in order to ensure high quality annotated data with minimal human interaction.

Malayalam, the official language of the Indian state of Kerala and spoken by 35+ million people, is a low resource language in terms of available corpora for TTS systems. In this paper, we present IMaSC, a Malayalam text and speech corpora containing approximately 50 hours of recorded speech. With 8 speakers and a total of 34,473 text-audio pairs, IMaSC is larger than every other publicly available alternative. We evaluated the database by using it to train TTS models for each speaker based on a modern deep learning architecture. Via subjective evaluation, we show that our models perform significantly better in terms of naturalness compared to previous studies and publicly available models, with an average mean opinion score of 4.50, indicating that the synthesized speech is close to human quality.

The application of Data Science and Analytics is Ubiquitous in the Modern World. Data Science and Analytics open doors to gain a deeper understanding and help in the decision making process. We firmly believed that we could adopt Data Science to predict the winning fantasy cricket team on the FSP, Dream 11. We built a predictive model that predicts the performance of players in a prospective game. We used a combination of Greedy and Knapsack Algorithms to prescribe the combination of 11 players to create a fantasy cricket team that has the most significant statistical odds of finishing as the strongest team thereby giving us a higher chance of winning the pot of bets on the Dream 11 FSP. We used PyCaret Python Library to help us understand and adopt the best Regressor Algorithm for our problem statement to make precise predictions. Further, we used Plotly Python Library to give us visual insights into the team, and players performances by accounting for the statistical, and subjective factors of a prospective game. The interactive plots help us to bolster the recommendations of our predictive model. You either win big, win small, or lose your bet based on the performance of the players selected for your fantasy team in the prospective game, and our model increases the probability of you winning big.

In clinical diagnosis, diagnostic images that are obtained from the scanning devices serve as preliminary evidence for further investigation in the process of delivering quality healthcare. However, often the medical image may contain fault artifacts, introduced due to noise, blur and faulty equipment. The reason for this may be the low-quality or older scanning devices, the test environment or technicians lack of training etc; however, the net result is that the process of fast and reliable diagnosis is hampered. Resolving these issues automatically can have a significant positive impact in a hospital clinical workflow, where often, there is no other way but to work with faulty/older equipment or inadequately qualified radiology technicians. In this paper, automated image quality improvement approaches for adapted and benchmarked for the task of medical image super-resolution. During experimental evaluation on standard open datasets, the observations showed that certain algorithms perform better and show significant improvement in the diagnostic quality of medical scans, thereby enabling better visualization for human diagnostic purposes.

Since deep learning is a powerful tool to extract patterns from data without much human intervention, they can be applied to image-to-image translation problems. An attempt has been made in this paper to automatically rectify such artifacts present in the images of the fundus. We use a CycleGAN based model which consists of residual blocks to reduce the artifacts in the images. Significant improvements are seen when compared to the existing techniques.

The proposed system extracts various attributes of the vehicle such as Make, Model, Color, License plate number, and type of the license plate. Various image processing and deep learning algorithms are employed to meet the objectives of the proposed system. The extracted features can be used as evidence to report violations of law. Although the system uses more parameters, it is still able to make real time predictions with minimal latency and accuracy loss.

The success of deep learning can be attributed to various factors such as increase in computational power, large datasets, deep convolutional neural networks, optimizers etc. Particularly, the choice of optimizer affects the generalization, convergence rate, and training stability. Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) is a first order iterative optimizer that updates the gradient uniformly for all parameters. This uniform update may not be suitable across the entire training phase. A rudimentary solution for this is to employ a fine-tuned learning rate scheduler which decreases learning rate as a function of iteration. To eliminate the dependency of learning rate schedulers, adaptive gradient optimizers such as AdaGrad, AdaDelta, RMSProp, Adam employ a parameter-wise scaling term for learning rate which is a function of the gradient itself. We propose Tom (Trend over Momentum) optimizer, which is a novel variant of Adam that takes into account of the trend which is observed for the gradients in the loss landscape traversed by the neural network. In the proposed Tom optimizer, an additional smoothing equation is introduced to address the trend observed during the process of optimization. The smoothing parameter introduced for the trend requires no tuning and can be used with default values. Experimental results for classification datasets such as CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and CINIC-10 image datasets show that Tom outperforms Adagrad, Adadelta, RMSProp and Adam in terms of both accuracy and has a faster convergence. The source code is publicly made available at https://github.com/AnirudhMaiya/Tom

Manual classification of IT service desk tickets may result in routing of the tickets to the wrong resolution group. Incorrect assignment of IT service desk tickets leads to reassignment of tickets, unnecessary resource utilization and delays the resolution time. Traditional machine learning algorithms can be used to automatically classify the IT service desk tickets. Service desk ticket classifier models can be trained by mining the historical unstructured ticket description and the corresponding label. The model can then be used to classify the new service desk ticket based on the ticket description. The performance of the traditional classifier systems can be further improved by using various ensemble of classification techniques. This paper brings out the three most popular ensemble methods ie, Bagging, Boosting and Voting ensemble for combining the predictions from different models to further improve the accuracy of the ticket classifier system. The performance of the ensemble classifier system is checked against the individual base classifiers using various performance metrics. Ensemble of classifiers performed well in comparison with the corresponding base classifiers. The advantages of building such an automated ticket classifier systems are simplified user interface, faster resolution time, improved productivity, customer satisfaction and growth in business. The real world service desk ticket data from a large enterprise IT infrastructure is used for our research purpose.

Currently, a majority of web portals offer their searching utilities, be it better or worse. These can search for the content within the sites, mainly text the textual content of documents. In this paper a novel similarity measure called SMDR (Similarity Measure for Documents Retrieval) is proposed to help retrieve more similar documents from the repository thus contributing considerably to the effectiveness of Web Information Retrieval (WIR) process. Bio-inspired PSO methodology is used with the intent to reduce the response time of the system and optimizes WIR process, hence contributes to the efficiency of the system. This paper also demonstrates a comparative study of the proposed system with the existing method in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, F-measure and specificity. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on CACM collections. Better precision-recall rates are achieved than the existing system. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed system.

Medical Image Retrieval is a challenging field in Visual information retrieval, due to the multi-dimensional and multi-modal context of the underlying content. Traditional models often fail to take the intrinsic characteristics of data into consideration, and have thus achieved limited accuracy when applied to medical images. The Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) is a technique that can be used to effectively represent intrinsic image features in vector space, so that applications like image classification and similar-image search can be optimized. In this paper, we present a MedIR approach based on the BoVW model for content-based medical image retrieval. As medical images as multi-dimensional, they exhibit underlying cluster and manifold information which enhances semantic relevance and allows for label uniformity. Hence, the BoVW features extracted for each image are used to train a supervised machine learning classifier based on positive and negative training images, for extending content based image retrieval. During experimental validation, the proposed model performed very well, achieving a Mean Average Precision of 88.89% during top-3 image retrieval experiments.

Behavioral cues play a significant part in human communication and cognitive perception. In most professional domains, employee recruitment policies are framed such that both professional skills and personality traits are adequately assessed. Hiring interviews are structured to evaluate expansively a potential employee's suitability for the position - their professional qualifications, interpersonal skills, ability to perform in critical and stressful situations, in the presence of time and resource constraints, etc. Therefore, candidates need to be aware of their positive and negative attributes and be mindful of behavioral cues that might have adverse effects on their success. We propose a multimodal analytical framework that analyzes the candidate in an interview scenario and provides feedback for predefined labels such as engagement, speaking rate, eye contact, etc. We perform a comprehensive analysis that includes the interviewee's facial expressions, speech, and prosodic information, using the video, audio, and text transcripts obtained from the recorded interview. We use these multimodal data sources to construct a composite representation, which is used for training machine learning classifiers to predict the class labels. Such analysis is then used to provide constructive feedback to the interviewee for their behavioral cues and body language. Experimental validation showed that the proposed methodology achieved promising results.

Individuals take the advantage of anonymity in the cyber world and indulge in offensive communications which they may not consider in the real life. Governments, online communities, companies etc are investing into prevention of offensive behaviour content in social media. One of the most effective solution for tacking this enigmatic problem is the use of computational techniques to identify offensive content and take action. The current work focuses on detecting offensive language in English tweets. The dataset used for the experiment is obtained from SemEval-2019 Task 6 on Identifying and Categorizing Offensive Language in Social Media (OffensEval). The dataset contains 14,460 annotated English tweets. The present paper provides a comparative analysis and Random kitchen sink (RKS) based approach for offensive language detection. We explore the effectiveness of Google sentence encoder, Fasttext, Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) based features and Random kitchen sink (RKS) method for offensive language detection. From the experiments and evaluation we observed that RKS with fastetxt achieved competing results. The evaluation measures used are accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score.

Existing Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) largely depend on the availability of structured patient data and Electronic Health Records (EHRs) to aid caregivers. However, in case of hospitals in developing countries, structured patient data formats are not widely adopted, where medical professionals still rely on clinical notes in the form of unstructured text. Such unstructured clinical notes recorded by medical personnel can also be a potential source of rich patient-specific information which can be leveraged to build CDSSs, even for hospitals in developing countries. If such unstructured clinical text can be used, the manual and time-consuming process of EHR generation will no longer be required, with huge person-hours and cost savings. In this paper, we propose a generic ICD9 disease group prediction CDSS built on unstructured physician notes modeled using hybrid word embeddings. These word embeddings are used to train a deep neural network for effectively predicting ICD9 disease groups. Experimental evaluation showed that the proposed approach outperformed the state-of-the-art disease group prediction model built on structured EHRs by 15% in terms of AUROC and 40% in terms of AUPRC, thus proving our hypothesis and eliminating dependency on availability of structured patient data.

IRGAN is an information retrieval (IR) modeling approach that uses a theoretical minimax game between a generative and a discriminative model to iteratively optimize both of them, hence unifying the generative and discriminative approaches. Despite significant performance improvements in several information retrieval tasks, IRGAN training is an unstable process, and the solution varies largely with the random parameter initialization. In this work, we present an improved training objective based on proximal policy optimization objective and Gumbel-Softmax based sampling for the generator. We also propose a modified training algorithm which takes a single gradient update on both the generator as well as discriminator for each iteration step. We present empirical evidence of the improved convergence of the proposed model over the original IRGAN and a comparison on three different IR tasks on benchmark datasets is also discussed, emphasizing the proposed model's superior performance.

We investigate this in static as well as dynamic (temporal) networks and establish the relevance of profile closeness in predicting the evolution of a complex network.

Visual Saliency is the capability of vision system to select distinctive parts of scene and reduce the amount of visual data that need to be processed. The presentpaper introduces (1) a novel approach to detect salient regions by considering color and luminance based saliency scores using Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), (2) a new interpretation to use DMD approach in static image processing. This approach integrates two data analysis methods: (1) Fourier Transform, (2) Principle Component Analysis. The key idea of our work is to create a color based saliency map. This is based on the observation thatsalient part of an image usually have distinct colors compared to the remaining portion of the image. We have exploited the power of different color spaces to model the complex and nonlinear behavior of human visual system to generate a color based saliency map. To further improve the effect of final saliency map, weutilized luminance information exploiting the fact that human eye is more sensitive towards brightness than color. The experimental results shows that our method based on DMD theory is effective in comparison with previous state-of-art saliency estimation approaches. The approach presented in this paperis evaluated using ROC curve, F-measure rate, Precision-Recall rate, AUC score etc.

The bursting aggregation assembly in edge nodes is one of the key technologies in OBS (Optical Burst Switching) network, which has a direct impact on flow characteristics and packet loss rate. An optical burst assembly technique supporting QoS is presented through this paper, which can automatically adjust the threshold along with the increasing and decreasing volume of business, reduce the operational burst, and generate corresponding BDP (Burst Data Packet) and BCP (Burst Control Packet). In addition to the burst aggregation technique a packet recovery technique by restoration method is also described. The data packet loss due to the physical optical link failure is not currently included in the QoS descriptions. This link failure is also a severe problem which reduces the data throughput of the transmitter node. A mechanism for data recovery from this link failure is vital for guaranteeing the QoS demanded by each user. So this paper will also discusses a specific protocol for reducing the packet loss by utilizing the features of both optical circuit switching (OCS) and Optical Burst switching (OBS) techniques.
