With the growing demand for higher wireless data rates, the interest in extending the carrier frequency of wireless links to the terahertz (THz) range has significantly increased. For long-distance outdoor wireless communications, THz channels may suffer substantial power loss and security issues due to atmospheric weather effects. It is crucial to assess the impact of weather on high-capacity data transmission to evaluate wireless system link budgets and performance accurately. In this article, we provide an insight into the propagation characteristics of THz channels under atmospheric conditions and the security aspects of THz communication systems in future applications. We conduct a comprehensive survey of our recent research and experimental findings on THz channel transmission and physical layer security, synthesizing and categorizing the state-of-the-art research in this domain. Our analysis encompasses various atmospheric phenomena, including molecular absorption, scattering effects, and turbulence, elucidating their intricate interactions with THz waves and the resultant implications for channel modeling and system design. Furthermore, we investigate the unique security challenges posed by THz communications, examining potential vulnerabilities and proposing novel countermeasures to enhance the resilience of these high-frequency systems against eavesdropping and other security threats. This paper addresses the mobility problem with the assistance of fluid antenna (FA) on the user equipment (UE) side. We propose a matrix pencil-based moving port (MPMP) prediction method, which may transform the time-varying channel to a static channel by timely sliding the liquid. Different from the existing channel prediction method, we design a moving port selection method, which is the first attempt to transform the channel prediction to the port prediction by exploiting the movability of FA. Theoretical analysis shows that for the line-ofsight (LoS) channel, the prediction error of our proposed MPMP method may converge to zero, as the number of BS antennas and the port density of the FA are large enough. For a multi-path channel, we also derive the upper and lower bounds of the prediction error when the number of paths is large enough. When the UEs move at a speed of 60 or 120 km/h, simulation results show that, with the assistance of FA, our proposed MPMP method performs better than the existing channel prediction method.

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) are capable of handling diverse data types such as imaging, text, and physiological signals, and can be applied in various fields. In the medical field, LVLMs have a high potential to offer substantial assistance for diagnosis and treatment. Before that, it is crucial to develop benchmarks to evaluate LVLMs' effectiveness in various medical applications. Current benchmarks are often built upon specific academic literature, mainly focusing on a single domain, and lacking varying perceptual granularities. Thus, they face specific challenges, including limited clinical relevance, incomplete evaluations, and insufficient guidance for interactive LVLMs. To address these limitations, we developed the GMAI-MMBench, the most comprehensive general medical AI benchmark with well-categorized data structure and multi-perceptual granularity to date. It is constructed from 285 datasets across 39 medical image modalities, 18 clinical-related tasks, 18 departments, and 4 perceptual granularities in a Visual Question Answering (VQA) format. Additionally, we implemented a lexical tree structure that allows users to customize evaluation tasks, accommodating various assessment needs and substantially supporting medical AI research and applications. We evaluated 50 LVLMs, and the results show that even the advanced GPT-4o only achieves an accuracy of 52%, indicating significant room for improvement. Moreover, we identified five key insufficiencies in current cutting-edge LVLMs that need to be addressed to advance the development of better medical applications. We believe that GMAI-MMBench will stimulate the community to build the next generation of LVLMs toward GMAI.

As a potential non-invasive biomarker for ischaemic stroke, intracranial arterial calcification (IAC) could be used for stroke risk assessment on CT head scans routinely acquired for other reasons (e.g. trauma, confusion). Artificial intelligence methods can support IAC scoring, but they have not yet been developed for clinical imaging. Large heterogeneous clinical CT datasets are necessary for the training of such methods, but they exhibit expected and unexpected data anomalies. Using CTs from a large clinical trial, the third International Stroke Trial (IST-3), we propose a pipeline that uses as input non-enhanced CT scans to output regions of interest capturing selected large intracranial arteries for IAC scoring. Our method uses co-registration with templates. We focus on quality control, using information presence along the z-axis of the imaging to group and apply similarity measures (structural similarity index measure) to triage assessment of individual image series. Additionally, we propose superimposing thresholded binary masks of the series to inspect large quantities of data in parallel. We identify and exclude unrecoverable samples and registration failures. In total, our pipeline processes 10,659 CT series, rejecting 4,322 (41%) in the entire process, 1,450 (14% of the total) during quality control, and outputting 6,337 series. Our pipeline enables effective and efficient region of interest localisation for targeted IAC segmentation.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA), a common form of arthritis that causes physical disability, has become increasingly prevalent in society. Employing computer-aided techniques to automatically assess the severity and progression of KOA can greatly benefit KOA treatment and disease management. Particularly, the advancement of X-ray technology in KOA demonstrates its potential for this purpose. Yet, existing X-ray prognosis research generally yields a singular progression severity grade, overlooking the potential visual changes for understanding and explaining the progression outcome. Therefore, in this study, a novel generative model is proposed, namely Identity-Consistent Radiographic Diffusion Network (IC-RDN), for multifaceted KOA prognosis encompassing a predicted future knee X-ray scan conditioned on the baseline scan. Specifically, an identity prior module for the diffusion and a downstream generation-guided progression prediction module are introduced. Compared to conventional image-to-image generative models, identity priors regularize and guide the diffusion to focus more on the clinical nuances of the prognosis based on a contrastive learning strategy. The progression prediction module utilizes both forecasted and baseline knee scans, and a more comprehensive formulation of KOA severity progression grading is expected. Extensive experiments on a widely used public dataset, OAI, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Recent language model-based TTS systems can be trained on large, diverse, and low-quality speech datasets, resulting in highly natural synthesized speech. However, they are limited by the difficulty of simulating various spontaneous behaviors and capturing prosody variations in spontaneous speech. In this paper, we propose a novel spontaneous speech synthesis system based on language models. We systematically categorize and uniformly model diverse spontaneous behaviors. Moreover, fine-grained prosody modeling is introduced to enhance the model's ability to capture subtle prosody variations in spontaneous speech.Experimental results show that our proposed method significantly outperforms the baseline methods in terms of prosody naturalness and spontaneous behavior naturalness.

Semi-supervised medical image segmentation aims to leverage limited annotated data and rich unlabeled data to perform accurate segmentation. However, existing semi-supervised methods are highly dependent on the quality of self-generated pseudo labels, which are prone to incorrect supervision and confirmation bias. Meanwhile, they are insufficient in capturing the label distributions in latent space and suffer from limited generalization to unlabeled data. To address these issues, we propose a Latent Diffusion Label Rectification Model (DiffRect) for semi-supervised medical image segmentation. DiffRect first utilizes a Label Context Calibration Module (LCC) to calibrate the biased relationship between classes by learning the category-wise correlation in pseudo labels, then apply Latent Feature Rectification Module (LFR) on the latent space to formulate and align the pseudo label distributions of different levels via latent diffusion. It utilizes a denoising network to learn the coarse to fine and fine to precise consecutive distribution transportations. We evaluate DiffRect on three public datasets: ACDC, MS-CMRSEG 2019, and Decathlon Prostate. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of DiffRect, e.g. it achieves 82.40\% Dice score on ACDC with only 1\% labeled scan available, outperforms the previous state-of-the-art by 4.60\% in Dice, and even rivals fully supervised performance. The spiking neural networks (SNNs) that efficiently encode temporal sequences have shown great potential in extracting audio-visual joint feature representations. However, coupling SNNs (binary spike sequences) with transformers (float-point sequences) to jointly explore the temporal-semantic information still facing challenges. In this paper, we introduce a novel Spiking Tucker Fusion Transformer (STFT) for audio-visual zero-shot learning (ZSL). The STFT leverage the temporal and semantic information from different time steps to generate robust representations. The time-step factor (TSF) is introduced to dynamically synthesis the subsequent inference information. To guide the formation of input membrane potentials and reduce the spike noise, we propose a global-local pooling (GLP) which combines the max and average pooling operations. Furthermore, the thresholds of the spiking neurons are dynamically adjusted based on semantic and temporal cues. Integrating the temporal and semantic information extracted by SNNs and Transformers are difficult due to the increased number of parameters in a straightforward bilinear model. To address this, we introduce a temporal-semantic Tucker fusion module, which achieves multi-scale fusion of SNN and Transformer outputs while maintaining full second-order interactions. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in achieving state-of-the-art performance in three benchmark datasets. The harmonic mean (HM) improvement of VGGSound, UCF101 and ActivityNet are around 15.4\%, 3.9\%, and 14.9\%, respectively.

Does popular music from the 60s sound different than that of the 90s? Prior study has shown that there would exist some variations of patterns and regularities related to instrumentation changes and growing loudness across multi-decadal trends. This indicates that perceiving the era of a song from musical features such as audio and artist information is possible. Music era information can be an important feature for playlist generation and recommendation. However, the release year of a song can be inaccessible in many circumstances. This paper addresses a novel task of music era recognition. We formulate the task as a music classification problem and propose solutions based on supervised contrastive learning. An audio-based model is developed to predict the era from audio. For the case where the artist information is available, we extend the audio-based model to take multimodal inputs and develop a framework, called MultiModal Contrastive (MMC) learning, to enhance the training. Experimental result on Million Song Dataset demonstrates that the audio-based model achieves 54% in accuracy with a tolerance of 3-years range; incorporating the artist information with the MMC framework for training leads to 9% improvement further.

The high speed of trains creates rapidly time-varying wireless channels, increases the signaling overhead, and reduces the system throughput, making it difficult to meet the growing and stringent needs of HSR applications. In this article, we explore artificial intelligence (AI)-based beam-level and cell-level mobility management suitable for HSR communications, including the use cases, inputs, outputs, and key performance indicators (KPI)s of AI models. Particularly, in comparison to traditional down-sampling spatial beam measurements, we show that the compressed spatial multi-beam measurements via compressive sensing lead to improved spatial-temporal beam prediction. Moreover, we demonstrate the performance gains of AI-assisted cell handover over traditional mobile handover mechanisms. In addition, we observe that the proposed approaches to reduce the measurement overhead achieve comparable radio link failure performance with the traditional approach that requires all the beam measurements of all cells, while the former methods can save 50% beam measurement overhead.

Generalist segmentation models are increasingly favored for diverse tasks involving various objects from different image sources. Task-Incremental Learning (TIL) offers a privacy-preserving training paradigm using tasks arriving sequentially, instead of gathering them due to strict data sharing policies. However, the task evolution can span a wide scope that involves shifts in both image appearance and segmentation semantics with intricate correlation, causing concurrent appearance and semantic forgetting. To solve this issue, we propose a Comprehensive Generative Replay (CGR) framework that restores appearance and semantic knowledge by synthesizing image-mask pairs to mimic past task data, which focuses on two aspects: modeling image-mask correspondence and promoting scalability for diverse tasks. Specifically, we introduce a novel Bayesian Joint Diffusion (BJD) model for high-quality synthesis of image-mask pairs with their correspondence explicitly preserved by conditional denoising. Furthermore, we develop a Task-Oriented Adapter (TOA) that recalibrates prompt embeddings to modulate the diffusion model, making the data synthesis compatible with different tasks. Experiments on incremental tasks (cardiac, fundus and prostate segmentation) show its clear advantage for alleviating concurrent appearance and semantic forgetting. The Audio-Visual Question Answering (AVQA) task holds significant potential for applications. Compared to traditional unimodal approaches, the multi-modal input of AVQA makes feature extraction and fusion processes more challenging. Euclidean space is difficult to effectively represent multi-dimensional relationships of data. Especially when extracting and processing data with a tree structure or hierarchical structure, Euclidean space is not suitable as an embedding space. Additionally, the self-attention mechanism in Transformers is effective in capturing the dynamic relationships between elements in a sequence. However, the self-attention mechanism's limitations in window modeling and quadratic computational complexity reduce its effectiveness in modeling long sequences. To address these limitations, we propose SHMamba: Structured Hyperbolic State Space Model to integrate the advantages of hyperbolic geometry and state space models. Specifically, SHMamba leverages the intrinsic properties of hyperbolic space to represent hierarchical structures and complex relationships in audio-visual data. Meanwhile, the state space model captures dynamic changes over time by globally modeling the entire sequence. Furthermore, we introduce an adaptive curvature hyperbolic alignment module and a cross fusion block to enhance the understanding of hierarchical structures and the dynamic exchange of cross-modal information, respectively. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SHMamba outperforms previous methods with fewer parameters and computational costs. Our learnable parameters are reduced by 78.12\%, while the average performance improves by 2.53\%. Experiments show that our method demonstrates superiority among all current major methods and is more suitable for practical application scenarios.

This paper explores enabling large language models (LLMs) to understand spatial information from multichannel audio, a skill currently lacking in auditory LLMs. By leveraging LLMs' advanced cognitive and inferential abilities, the aim is to enhance understanding of 3D environments via audio. We study 3 spatial audio tasks: sound source localization (SSL), far-field speech recognition (FSR), and localisation-informed speech extraction (LSE), achieving notable progress in each task. For SSL, our approach achieves an MAE of $2.70^{\circ}$ on the Spatial LibriSpeech dataset, substantially surpassing the prior benchmark of about $6.60^{\circ}$. Moreover, our model can employ spatial cues to improve FSR accuracy and execute LSE by selectively attending to sounds originating from a specified direction via text prompts, even amidst overlapping speech. These findings highlight the potential of adapting LLMs to grasp physical audio concepts, paving the way for LLM-based agents in 3D environments.

This paper addresses challenges in integrating new languages into a pre-trained multilingual automatic speech recognition (mASR) system, particularly in scenarios where training data for existing languages is limited or unavailable. The proposed method employs a dual-pipeline with low-rank adaptation (LoRA). It maintains two data flow pipelines-one for existing languages and another for new languages. The primary pipeline follows the standard flow through the pre-trained parameters of mASR, while the secondary pipeline additionally utilizes language-specific parameters represented by LoRA and a separate output decoder module. Importantly, the proposed approach minimizes the performance degradation of existing languages and enables a language-agnostic operation mode, facilitated by a decoder selection strategy. Correlating neuropathology with neuroimaging findings provides a multiscale view of pathologic changes in the human organ spanning the meso- to micro-scales, and is an emerging methodology expected to shed light on numerous disease states. To gain the most information from this multimodal, multiscale approach, it is desirable to identify precisely where a histologic tissue section was taken from within the organ in order to correlate with the tissue features in exactly the same organ region. Histology-to-organ registration poses an extra challenge, as any given histologic section can capture only a small portion of a human organ. Making use of the capabilities of state-of-the-art deep learning models, we unlock the potential to address and solve such intricate challenges. U-Net has become a cornerstone in various visual applications such as image segmentation and diffusion probability models. While numerous innovative designs and improvements have been introduced by incorporating transformers or MLPs, the networks are still limited to linearly modeling patterns as well as the deficient interpretability. To address these challenges, our intuition is inspired by the impressive results of the Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs) in terms of accuracy and interpretability, which reshape the neural network learning via the stack of non-linear learnable activation functions derived from the Kolmogorov-Anold representation theorem. Specifically, in this paper, we explore the untapped potential of KANs in improving backbones for vision tasks. We investigate, modify and re-design the established U-Net pipeline by integrating the dedicated KAN layers on the tokenized intermediate representation, termed U-KAN. Deep unfolding methods have made impressive progress in restoring 3D hyperspectral images (HSIs) from 2D measurements through convolution neural networks or Transformers in spectral compressive imaging. However, they cannot efficiently capture long-range dependencies using global receptive fields, which significantly limits their performance in HSI reconstruction. Moreover, these methods may suffer from local context neglect if we directly utilize Mamba to unfold a 2D feature map as a 1D sequence for modeling global long-range dependencies. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Dual Hyperspectral Mamba (DHM) to explore both global long-range dependencies and local contexts for efficient HSI reconstruction. After learning informative parameters to estimate degradation patterns of the CASSI system, we use them to scale the linear projection and offer noise level for the denoiser (i.e., our proposed DHM). Specifically, our DHM consists of multiple dual hyperspectral S4 blocks (DHSBs) to restore original HSIs. Particularly, each DHSB contains a global hyperspectral S4 block (GHSB) to model long-range dependencies across the entire high-resolution HSIs using global receptive fields, and a local hyperspectral S4 block (LHSB) to address local context neglect by establishing structured state-space sequence (S4) models within local windows. Experiments verify the benefits of our DHM for HSI reconstruction. The source codes and models will be available at https://github.com/JiahuaDong/DHM.

Satellite remote sensing serves as a crucial means to acquire cloud physical parameters. However, existing official cloud products derived from the advanced geostationary radiation imager (AGRI) onboard the Fengyun-4A geostationary satellite suffer from limitations in computational precision and efficiency. In this study, an image-based transfer learning model (ITLM) was developed to realize all-day and high-precision retrieval of cloud physical parameters using AGRI thermal infrared measurements and auxiliary data. Combining the observation advantages of geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites, ITLM was pre-trained and transfer-trained with official cloud products from advanced Himawari imager (AHI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), respectively. Taking official MODIS products as the benchmarks, ITLM achieved an overall accuracy of 79.93% for identifying cloud phase and root mean squared errors of 1.85 km, 6.72 um, and 12.79 for estimating cloud top height, cloud effective radius, and cloud optical thickness, outperforming the precision of official AGRI and AHI products. Compared to the pixel-based random forest model, ITLM utilized the spatial information of clouds to significantly improve the retrieval performance and achieve more than a 6-fold increase in speed for a single full-disk retrieval. Moreover, the AGRI ITLM products with spatiotemporal continuity and high precision were used to accurately describe the spatial distribution characteristics of cloud fractions and cloud properties over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) during both daytime and nighttime, and for the first time provide insights into the diurnal variation of cloud cover and cloud properties for total clouds and deep convective clouds across different seasons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a condition characterized by a typical brain development leading to impairments in social skills, communication abilities, repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing. There have been many studies combining brain MRI images with machine learning algorithms to achieve objective diagnosis of autism, but the correlation between white matter and autism has not been fully utilized. To address this gap, we develop a computer-aided diagnostic model focusing on white matter regions in brain MRI by employing radiomics and machine learning methods. This study introduced a MultiUNet model for segmenting white matter, leveraging the UNet architecture and utilizing manually segmented MRI images as the training data. Subsequently, we extracted white matter features using the Pyradiomics toolkit and applied different machine learning models such as Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and K-Nearest Neighbors to predict autism. The prediction sets all exceeded 80% accuracy. Additionally, we employed Convolutional Neural Network to analyze segmented white matter images, achieving a prediction accuracy of 86.84%. Notably, Support Vector Machine demonstrated the highest prediction accuracy at 89.47%. These findings not only underscore the efficacy of the models but also establish a link between white matter abnormalities and autism. Our study contributes to a comprehensive evaluation of various diagnostic models for autism and introduces a computer-aided diagnostic algorithm for early and objective autism diagnosis based on MRI white matter regions.

Deep learning-based diagnostic systems have demonstrated potential in skin disease diagnosis. However, their performance can easily degrade on test domains due to distribution shifts caused by input-level corruptions, such as imaging equipment variability, brightness changes, and image blur. This will reduce the reliability of model deployment in real-world scenarios. Most existing solutions focus on adapting the source model through retraining on different target domains. Although effective, this retraining process is sensitive to the amount of data and the hyperparameter configuration for optimization. In this paper, we propose a test-time image adaptation method to enhance the accuracy of the model on test data by simultaneously updating and predicting test images. We modify the target test images by projecting them back to the source domain using a diffusion model. Specifically, we design a structure guidance module that adds refinement operations through low-pass filtering during reverse sampling, regularizing the diffusion to preserve structural information. Additionally, we introduce a self-ensembling scheme automatically adjusts the reliance on adapted and unadapted inputs, enhancing adaptation robustness by rejecting inappropriate generative modeling results. To facilitate this study, we constructed the ISIC2019-C and Dermnet-C corruption robustness evaluation benchmarks. Extensive experiments on the proposed benchmarks demonstrate that our method makes the classifier more robust across various corruptions, architectures, and data regimes. Stereo image super-resolution (SR) refers to the reconstruction of a high-resolution (HR) image from a pair of low-resolution (LR) images as typically captured by a dual-camera device. To enhance the quality of SR images, most previous studies focused on increasing the number and size of feature maps and introducing complex and computationally intensive structures, resulting in models with high computational complexity. Here, we propose a simple yet efficient stereo image SR model called NAFRSSR, which is modified from the previous state-of-the-art model NAFSSR by introducing recursive connections and lightweighting the constituent modules. Our NAFRSSR model is composed of nonlinear activation free and group convolution-based blocks (NAFGCBlocks) and depth-separated stereo cross attention modules (DSSCAMs). The NAFGCBlock improves feature extraction and reduces number of parameters by removing the simple channel attention mechanism from NAFBlock and using group convolution. The DSSCAM enhances feature fusion and reduces number of parameters by replacing 1x1 pointwise convolution in SCAM with weight-shared 3x3 depthwise convolution. Besides, we propose to incorporate trainable edge detection operator into NAFRSSR to further improve the model performance. Four variants of NAFRSSR with different sizes, namely, NAFRSSR-Mobile (NAFRSSR-M), NAFRSSR-Tiny (NAFRSSR-T), NAFRSSR-Super (NAFRSSR-S) and NAFRSSR-Base (NAFRSSR-B) are designed, and they all exhibit fewer parameters, higher PSNR/SSIM, and faster speed than the previous state-of-the-art models. In particular, to the best of our knowledge, NAFRSSR-M is the lightest (0.28M parameters) and fastest (50 ms inference time) model achieving an average PSNR/SSIM as high as 24.657 dB/0.7622 on the benchmark datasets. Real-SR endeavors to produce high-resolution images with rich details while mitigating the impact of multiple degradation factors. Although existing methods have achieved impressive achievements in detail recovery, they still fall short when addressing regions with complex gradient arrangements due to the intensity-based linear weighting feature extraction manner. Moreover, the stochastic artifacts introduced by degradation cues during the imaging process in real LR increase the disorder of the overall image details, further complicating the perception of intrinsic gradient arrangement. To address these challenges, we innovatively introduce kernel-wise differential operations within the convolutional kernel and develop several learnable directional gradient convolutions. These convolutions are integrated in parallel with a novel linear weighting mechanism to form an Adaptive Directional Gradient Convolution (DGConv), which adaptively weights and fuses the basic directional gradients to improve the gradient arrangement perception capability for both regular and irregular textures. Coupled with DGConv, we further devise a novel equivalent parameter fusion method for DGConv that maintains its rich representational capabilities while keeping computational costs consistent with a single Vanilla Convolution (VConv), enabling DGConv to improve the performance of existing super-resolution networks without incurring additional computational expenses. To better leverage the superiority of DGConv, we further develop an Adaptive Information Interaction Block (AIIBlock) to adeptly balance the enhancement of texture and contrast while meticulously investigating the interdependencies, culminating in the creation of a DGPNet for Real-SR through simple stacking. Comparative results with 15 SOTA methods across three public datasets underscore the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach.

Digital watermarking is the process of embedding secret information by altering images in an undetectable way to the human eye. To increase the robustness of the model, many deep learning-based watermarking methods use the encoder-noise-decoder architecture by adding different noises to the noise layer. The decoder then extracts the watermarked information from the distorted image. However, this method can only resist weak noise attacks. To improve the robustness of the decoder against stronger noise, this paper proposes to introduce a denoise module between the noise layer and the decoder. The module aims to reduce noise and recover some of the information lost caused by distortion. Additionally, the paper introduces the SE module to fuse the watermarking information pixel-wise and channel dimensions-wise, improving the encoder's efficiency. Experimental results show that our proposed method is comparable to existing models and outperforms state-of-the-art under different noise intensities. In addition, ablation experiments show the superiority of our proposed module.

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by identifying abnormal speech patterns from examiner-patient dialogues presents significant challenges due to the subtle and diverse manifestations of speech-related symptoms in affected individuals. This study presents a comprehensive approach to identify distinctive speech patterns through the analysis of examiner-patient dialogues. Utilizing a dataset of recorded dialogues, we extracted 40 speech-related features, categorized into frequency, zero-crossing rate, energy, spectral characteristics, Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), and balance. These features encompass various aspects of speech such as intonation, volume, rhythm, and speech rate, reflecting the complex nature of communicative behaviors in ASD. We employed machine learning for both classification and regression tasks to analyze these speech features. The classification model aimed to differentiate between ASD and non-ASD cases, achieving an accuracy of 87.75%. Regression models were developed to predict speech pattern related variables and a composite score from all variables, facilitating a deeper understanding of the speech dynamics associated with ASD. The effectiveness of machine learning in interpreting intricate speech patterns and the high classification accuracy underscore the potential of computational methods in supporting the diagnostic processes for ASD. This approach not only aids in early detection but also contributes to personalized treatment planning by providing insights into the speech and communication profiles of individuals with ASD.

Fundus photography, in combination with the ultra-wide-angle fundus (UWF) techniques, becomes an indispensable diagnostic tool in clinical settings by offering a more comprehensive view of the retina. Nonetheless, UWF fluorescein angiography (UWF-FA) necessitates the administration of a fluorescent dye via injection into the patient's hand or elbow unlike UWF scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO). To mitigate potential adverse effects associated with injections, researchers have proposed the development of cross-modality medical image generation algorithms capable of converting UWF-SLO images into their UWF-FA counterparts. Current image generation techniques applied to fundus photography encounter difficulties in producing high-resolution retinal images, particularly in capturing minute vascular lesions. To address these issues, we introduce a novel conditional generative adversarial network (UWAFA-GAN) to synthesize UWF-FA from UWF-SLO. This approach employs multi-scale generators and an attention transmit module to efficiently extract both global structures and local lesions. Additionally, to counteract the image blurriness issue that arises from training with misaligned data, a registration module is integrated within this framework. Our method performs non-trivially on inception scores and details generation. Clinical user studies further indicate that the UWF-FA images generated by UWAFA-GAN are clinically comparable to authentic images in terms of diagnostic reliability. Empirical evaluations on our proprietary UWF image datasets elucidate that UWAFA-GAN outperforms extant methodologies. The code is accessible at https://github.com/Tinysqua/UWAFA-GAN.

With the advent of virtual reality technology, omnidirectional image (ODI) rescaling techniques are increasingly embraced for reducing transmitted and stored file sizes while preserving high image quality. Despite this progress, current ODI rescaling methods predominantly focus on enhancing the quality of images in equirectangular projection (ERP) format, which overlooks the fact that the content viewed on head mounted displays (HMDs) is actually a rendered viewport instead of an ERP image. In this work, we emphasize that focusing solely on ERP quality results in inferior viewport visual experiences for users. Thus, we propose ResVR, which is the first comprehensive framework for the joint Rescaling and Viewport Rendering of ODIs. ResVR allows obtaining LR ERP images for transmission while rendering high-quality viewports for users to watch on HMDs. In our ResVR, a novel discrete pixel sampling strategy is developed to tackle the complex mapping between the viewport and ERP, enabling end-to-end training of ResVR pipeline. Furthermore, a spherical pixel shape representation technique is innovatively derived from spherical differentiation to significantly improve the visual quality of rendered viewports. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our ResVR outperforms existing methods in viewport rendering tasks across different fields of view, resolutions, and view directions while keeping a low transmission overhead.

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the NTIRE 2024 challenge, focusing on efficient single-image super-resolution (ESR) solutions and their outcomes. The task of this challenge is to super-resolve an input image with a magnification factor of x4 based on pairs of low and corresponding high-resolution images. The primary objective is to develop networks that optimize various aspects such as runtime, parameters, and FLOPs, while still maintaining a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of approximately 26.90 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_valid dataset and 26.99 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_test dataset. In addition, this challenge has 4 tracks including the main track (overall performance), sub-track 1 (runtime), sub-track 2 (FLOPs), and sub-track 3 (parameters). In the main track, all three metrics (ie runtime, FLOPs, and parameter count) were considered. The ranking of the main track is calculated based on a weighted sum-up of the scores of all other sub-tracks. In sub-track 1, the practical runtime performance of the submissions was evaluated, and the corresponding score was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 2, the number of FLOPs was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding FLOPs was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 3, the number of parameters was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding parameters was used to determine the ranking. RLFN is set as the baseline for efficiency measurement. The challenge had 262 registered participants, and 34 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art in efficient single-image super-resolution. To facilitate the reproducibility of the challenge and enable other researchers to build upon these findings, the code and the pre-trained model of validated solutions are made publicly available at https://github.com/Amazingren/NTIRE2024_ESR/.

Omnidirectional images (ODIs) are commonly used in real-world visual tasks, and high-resolution ODIs help improve the performance of related visual tasks. Most existing super-resolution methods for ODIs use end-to-end learning strategies, resulting in inferior realness of generated images and a lack of effective out-of-domain generalization capabilities in training methods. Image generation methods represented by diffusion model provide strong priors for visual tasks and have been proven to be effectively applied to image restoration tasks. Leveraging the image priors of the Stable Diffusion (SD) model, we achieve omnidirectional image super-resolution with both fidelity and realness, dubbed as OmniSSR. Firstly, we transform the equirectangular projection (ERP) images into tangent projection (TP) images, whose distribution approximates the planar image domain. Then, we use SD to iteratively sample initial high-resolution results. At each denoising iteration, we further correct and update the initial results using the proposed Octadecaplex Tangent Information Interaction (OTII) and Gradient Decomposition (GD) technique to ensure better consistency. Finally, the TP images are transformed back to obtain the final high-resolution results. Our method is zero-shot, requiring no training or fine-tuning. Experiments of our method on two benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

This paper introduces a cooperative sensing framework designed for integrated sensing and communication cellular networks. The framework comprises one base station (BS) functioning as the sensing transmitter, while several nearby BSs act as sensing receivers. The primary objective is to facilitate cooperative target localization by enabling each receiver to share specific information with a fusion center (FC) over a limited capacity backhaul link. To achieve this goal, we propose an advanced cooperative sensing design that enhances the communication process between the receivers and the FC. Each receiver independently estimates the time delay and the reflecting coefficient associated with the reflected path from the target. Subsequently, each receiver transmits the estimated values and the received signal samples centered around the estimated time delay to the FC. To efficiently quantize the signal samples, a Karhunen-Loève Transform coding scheme is employed. Furthermore, an optimization problem is formulated to allocate backhaul resources for quantizing different samples, improving target localization. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed advanced design and demonstrate its superiority over a baseline design, where only the locally estimated values are transmitted from each receiver to the FC.

In this system, an FD base station (BS) with multiple MAs for transmission and reception provides services for an uplink (UL) user and a downlink (DL) user. Each user operates in half-duplex (HD) mode and is equipped with a single fixed-position antenna (FPA), in the presence of a single-FPA eavesdropper (Eve). To ensure secure communication, artificial noise (AN) is transmitted to obstruct the interception of Eve. The objective of this paper is to maximize the sum secrecy rate (SSR) of the UL and DL users by jointly optimizing the beamformers of the BS and the positions of MAs. This paper also proposes an alternating optimization (AO) method to address the non-convex problem, which decomposes the optimization problem into three subproblems and solves them iteratively. Simulation results demonstrate a significant performance gain in the SSR achieved by the proposed scheme compared to the benchmark schemes.

Reference-based super-resolution (RefSR) has the potential to build bridges across spatial and temporal resolutions of remote sensing images. However, existing RefSR methods are limited by the faithfulness of content reconstruction and the effectiveness of texture transfer in large scaling factors. Conditional diffusion models have opened up new opportunities for generating realistic high-resolution images, but effectively utilizing reference images within these models remains an area for further exploration. Furthermore, content fidelity is difficult to guarantee in areas without relevant reference information. To solve these issues, we propose a change-aware diffusion model named Ref-Diff for RefSR, using the land cover change priors to guide the denoising process explicitly. Specifically, we inject the priors into the denoising model to improve the utilization of reference information in unchanged areas and regulate the reconstruction of semantically relevant content in changed areas. With this powerful guidance, we decouple the semantics-guided denoising and reference texture-guided denoising processes to improve the model performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superior effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method compared with state-of-the-art RefSR methods in both quantitative and qualitative evaluations. The code and data are available at https://github.com/dongrunmin/RefDiff.

Optimal control methods provide solutions to safety-critical problems but easily become intractable. Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) have emerged as a popular technique that facilitates their solution by provably guaranteeing safety, through their forward invariance property, at the expense of some performance loss. This approach involves defining a performance objective alongside CBF-based safety constraints that must always be enforced. Unfortunately, both performance and solution feasibility can be significantly impacted by two key factors: (i) the selection of the cost function and associated parameters, and (ii) the calibration of parameters within the CBF-based constraints, which capture the trade-off between performance and conservativeness. %as well as infeasibility. To address these challenges, we propose a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based Receding Horizon Control (RHC) approach leveraging Model Predictive Control (MPC) with CBFs (MPC-CBF). In particular, we parameterize our controller and use bilevel optimization, where RL is used to learn the optimal parameters while MPC computes the optimal control input. We validate our method by applying it to the challenging automated merging control problem for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) at conflicting roadways. Results demonstrate improved performance and a significant reduction in the number of infeasible cases compared to traditional heuristic approaches used for tuning CBF-based controllers, showcasing the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Higher variability in grid conditions, resulting from growing renewable penetration and increased incidence of extreme weather events, has increased the difficulty of screening for scenarios that may lead to catastrophic cascading failures. Traditional power-flow-based tools for assessing cascading blackout risk are too slow to properly explore the space of possible failures and load/generation patterns. We add to the growing literature of faster graph-neural-network (GNN)-based techniques, developing two novel techniques for the estimation of blackout magnitude from initial grid conditions. First we propose several methods for employing an initial classification step to filter out safe "non blackout" scenarios prior to magnitude estimation. Second, using insights from the statistical properties of cascading blackouts, we propose a method for facilitating non-local message passing in our GNN models. We validate these two approaches on a large simulated dataset, and show the potential of both to increase blackout size estimation performance.

Deep learning models have shown promising performance for cell nucleus segmentation in the field of pathology image analysis. However, training a robust model from multiple domains remains a great challenge for cell nucleus segmentation. Additionally, the shortcomings of background noise, highly overlapping between cell nucleus, and blurred edges often lead to poor performance. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework termed CausalCellSegmenter, which combines Causal Inference Module (CIM) with Diversified Aggregation Convolution (DAC) techniques. The DAC module is designed which incorporates diverse downsampling features through a simple, parameter-free attention module (SimAM), aiming to overcome the problems of false-positive identification and edge blurring. Furthermore, we introduce CIM to leverage sample weighting by directly removing the spurious correlations between features for every input sample and concentrating more on the correlation between features and labels. Extensive experiments on the MoNuSeg-2018 dataset achieves promising results, outperforming other state-of-the-art methods, where the mIoU and DSC scores growing by 3.6% and 2.65%.

For image super-resolution (SR), bridging the gap between the performance on synthetic datasets and real-world degradation scenarios remains a challenge. This work introduces a novel "Low-Res Leads the Way" (LWay) training framework, merging Supervised Pre-training with Self-supervised Learning to enhance the adaptability of SR models to real-world images. Our approach utilizes a low-resolution (LR) reconstruction network to extract degradation embeddings from LR images, merging them with super-resolved outputs for LR reconstruction. Leveraging unseen LR images for self-supervised learning guides the model to adapt its modeling space to the target domain, facilitating fine-tuning of SR models without requiring paired high-resolution (HR) images. The integration of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) further refines the focus on high-frequency details. Extensive evaluations show that our method significantly improves the generalization and detail restoration capabilities of SR models on unseen real-world datasets, outperforming existing methods. Our training regime is universally compatible, requiring no network architecture modifications, making it a practical solution for real-world SR applications.

Active distribution networks (ADNs) incorporating massive photovoltaic (PV) devices encounter challenges of rapid voltage fluctuations and potential violations. Due to the fluctuation and intermittency of PV generation, the state gap, arising from time-inconsistent states and exacerbated by imprecisely known system delays, significantly impacts the accuracy of voltage control. This paper addresses this challenge by introducing a framework for delay adaptive Volt/Var control (VVC) in the presence of imprecisely known system delays to regulate the reactive power of PV inverters. The proposed approach formulates the voltage control, based on predicted system operation states, as a robust VVC problem. It employs sample selection from the state prediction interval to promptly identify the worst-performing system operation state. Furthermore, we leverage the decentralized partially observable Markov decision process (Dec-POMDP) to reformulate the robust VVC problem. We design Multiple Policy Networks and employ Multiple Policy Networks and Reward Shaping-based Multi-agent Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MPNRS-MATD3) algorithm to efficiently address and solve the Dec-POMDP model-based problem. Simulation results show the delay adaption characteristic of our proposed framework, and the MPNRS-MATD3 outperforms other multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithms in robust voltage control.

Sparse signal recovery deals with finding the sparest solution of an under-determined linear system $x = Qs$. In this paper, we propose a novel greedy approach to addressing the challenges from such a problem. Such an approach is based on a characterization of solutions to the system, which allows us to work on the sparse recovery in the $s$-space directly with a given measure. With $l_2$-based measure, two OMP-type algorithms are proposed, which significantly outperform the classical OMP algorithm in terms of recovery accuracy while maintaining comparable computational complexity. An $l_1$-based algorithm, denoted as $\text{Alg}_{GBP}$ (greedy basis pursuit) algorithm, is derived. Such an algorithm significantly outperforms the classical BP algorithm. A CoSaMP-type algorithm is also proposed to further enhance the performance of the two proposed OMP-type algorithms. The superior performance of our proposed algorithms is demonstrated through extensive numerical simulations using synthetic data as well as video signals, highlighting their potential for various applications in compressed sensing and signal processing.

The millimeter wave (mmWave) has received considerable interest due to its expansive bandwidth and high frequency. However, a noteworthy challenge arises from its vulnerability to blockages, leading to reduced coverage and achievable rates. To address these limitations, a potential solution is to deploy distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which comprise many low-cost and passively reflected elements, and can facilitate the establishment of extra communication links. In this paper, we leverage stochastic geometry to investigate the ergodic coverage probability and the achievable rate in both distributed RISs-assisted single-cell and multi-cell mmWave wireless communication systems. Specifically, we first establish the system model considering the stochastically distributed blockages, RISs and users by the Poisson point process. Then we give the association criterion and derive the association probabilities, the distance distributions, and the conditional coverage probabilities for two cases of associations between base stations and users without or with RISs. Finally, we use Campbell's theorem and the total probability theorem to obtain the closed-form expressions of the ergodic coverage probability and the achievable rate. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our analysis method, and demonstrate that by deploying distributed RISs, the ergodic coverage probability is significantly improved by approximately 50%, and the achievable rate is increased by more than 1.5 times.

In integrated ground-air-space (IGAS) wireless networks, numerous services require sensing knowledge including location, angle, distance information, etc., which usually can be acquired during the beam training stage. On the other hand, IGAS networks employ large-scale antenna arrays to mitigate obstacle occlusion and path loss. However, large-scale arrays generate pencil-shaped beams, which necessitate a higher number of training beams to cover the desired space. These factors motivate our investigation into the IGAS beam training problem to achieve effective sensing services. To address the high complexity and low identification accuracy of existing beam training techniques, we propose an efficient hashing multi-arm beam (HMB) training scheme. Specifically, we first construct an IGAS single-beam training codebook for the uniform planar arrays. Then, the hash functions are chosen independently to construct the multi-arm beam training codebooks for each AP. All APs traverse the predefined multi-arm beam training codeword simultaneously and the multi-AP superimposed signals at the user are recorded. Finally, the soft decision and voting methods are applied to obtain the correctly aligned beams only based on the signal powers. In addition, we logically prove that the traversal complexity is at the logarithmic level. Simulation results show that our proposed IGAS HMB training method can achieve 96.4% identification accuracy of the exhaustive beam training method and greatly reduce the training overhead.

Deep learning (DL)-based methods offer a promising solution to reduce the prolonged scanning time in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While model-driven DL methods have demonstrated convincing results by incorporating prior knowledge into deep networks, further exploration is needed to optimize the integration of diverse priors.. Existing model-driven networks typically utilize linearly stacked unrolled cascades to mimic iterative solution steps in optimization algorithms. However, this approach needs to find a balance between different prior-based regularizers during training, resulting in slower convergence and suboptimal reconstructions. To overcome the limitations, we propose a collaborative model-driven network to maximally exploit the complementarity of different regularizers. We design attention modules to learn both the relative confidence (RC) and overall confidence (OC) for the intermediate reconstructions (IRs) generated by different prior-based subnetworks. RC assigns more weight to the areas of expertise of the subnetworks, enabling precise element-wise collaboration. We design correction modules to tackle bottleneck scenarios where both subnetworks exhibit low accuracy, and they further optimize the IRs based on OC maps. IRs across various stages are concatenated and fed to the attention modules to build robust and accurate confidence maps. Experimental results on multiple datasets showed significant improvements in the final results without additional computational costs. Moreover, the proposed model-driven network design strategy can be conveniently applied to various model-driven methods to improve their performance.

Specifically, the transmitter, equipped with FAS, harvests the radio frequency (RF) signal from a power beacon and utilizes the harvested energy for data transmission to the receiver. To evaluate the performance of the considered systems, we derive both the analytical and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability. Simulation results indicate that the diversity of the considered network closely aligns with the number of ports. Besides, it is also revealed that the port selection criteria based solely on single-hop configurations yield a diversity order of only one.

Movable antenna (MA) provides an innovative way to arrange antennas that can contribute to improved signal quality and more effective interference management. This technology is especially beneficial for co-frequency co-time full-duplex (CCFD) wireless communication, which struggles with self-interference (SI) that usually overpowers the desired incoming signals. By dynamically repositioning transmit/receive antennas, we can mitigate the SI and enhance the reception of incoming signals. Thus, this paper proposes a novel MA-enabled point-to-point CCFD system and formulates the minimum achievable rate of two CCFD terminals. To maximize the minimum achievable rate and determine the positions of MAs, we introduce a solution based on projected particle swarm optimization (PPSO), which can circumvent common suboptimal positioning issues. Moreover, simulation results reveal that the PPSO method leads to better performance compared to the conventional alternating position optimization (APO). The results also demonstrate that an MA-enabled CCFD system outperforms the one using fixed-position antennas (FPAs).

Downscaling (DS) of meteorological variables involves obtaining high-resolution states from low-resolution meteorological fields and is an important task in weather forecasting. Previous methods based on deep learning treat downscaling as a super-resolution task in computer vision and utilize high-resolution gridded meteorological fields as supervision to improve resolution at specific grid scales. However, this approach has struggled to align with the continuous distribution characteristics of meteorological fields, leading to an inherent systematic bias between the downscaled results and the actual observations at meteorological stations. In this paper, we extend meteorological downscaling to arbitrary scattered station scales, establish a brand new benchmark and dataset, and retrieve meteorological states at any given station location from a coarse-resolution meteorological field. Inspired by data assimilation techniques, we integrate observational data into the downscaling process, providing multi-scale observational priors. Building on this foundation, we propose a new downscaling model based on hypernetwork architecture, namely HyperDS, which efficiently integrates different observational information into the model training, achieving continuous scale modeling of the meteorological field. Through extensive experiments, our proposed method outperforms other specially designed baseline models on multiple surface variables. Notably, the mean squared error (MSE) for wind speed and surface pressure improved by 67% and 19.5% compared to other methods. We will release the dataset and code subsequently.

Neural style transfer (NST) generates new images by combining the style of one image with the content of another. However, unauthorized NST can exploit artwork, raising concerns about artists' rights and motivating the development of proactive protection methods. We propose Locally Adaptive Adversarial Color Attack (LAACA), empowering artists to protect their artwork from unauthorized style transfer by processing before public release. By delving into the intricacies of human visual perception and the role of different frequency components, our method strategically introduces frequency-adaptive perturbations in the image. These perturbations significantly degrade the generation quality of NST while maintaining an acceptable level of visual change in the original image, ensuring that potential infringers are discouraged from using the protected artworks, because of its bad NST generation quality. Additionally, existing metrics often overlook the importance of color fidelity in evaluating color-mattered tasks, such as the quality of NST-generated images, which is crucial in the context of artistic works. To comprehensively assess the color-mattered tasks, we propose the Adversarial Color Distance Metric (ACDM), designed to quantify the color difference of images pre- and post-manipulations. Experimental results confirm that attacking NST using LAACA results in visually inferior style transfer, and the ACDM can efficiently measure color-mattered tasks. By providing artists with a tool to safeguard their intellectual property, our work relieves the socio-technical challenges posed by the misuse of NST in the art community.
