We study the stability of quasinormal modes (QNMs) in electrically charged black brane spacetimes that asymptote to AdS by means of the pseudospectrum. Methodologically, we adopt ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates to cast QNMs in terms of a generalised eigenvalue problem involving a non-selfadjoint operator; this simplifies the computation significantly in comparison with previous results in the literature. Our analysis reveals spectral instability for (neutral) scalar as well as gravitoelectric perturbations. This indicates that the equilibration process of perturbed black branes is sensitive to external perturbations. Particular attention is given on the hydrodynamic modes, which are found to be the least unstable. In contrast with computations in hyperboloidal coordinates, we find that the pseudospectral contour lines cross to the upper half plane. This indicates the existence of pseudo-resonances as well as the possibility of transient instabilities. We also investigate the asymptotic structure of pseudospectral contour levels and we find remarkable universality across all sectors, persistent in the extremal limit.

LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. This white paper is presented on behalf of the Waveform Working Group for the LISA Consortium. It provides a review of the current state of waveform models for LISA sources, and describes the significant challenges that must yet be overcome.

Abstract:
We compute fully retarded scalar three-point functions of holographic CFTs at finite temperature using real-time holography. They describe the nonlinear response of a holographic medium under scalar forcing, and display single and higher-order poles associated to resonant QNM excitations. We compute fully retarded scalar three-point functions of holographic CFTs at finite temperature using real-time holography. They describe the nonlinear response of a holographic medium under scalar forcing, and display single and higher-order poles associated to resonant QNM excitations. This involves computing the bulk-to-bulk propagator on a piecewise mixed-signature spacetime, the dual of the Schwinger-Keldysh contour. We show this construction is equivalent to imposing ingoing boundary conditions on a single copy of a black hole spacetime, similar to the case of the two-point function. We also compute retarded scalar correlators with stress-tensor insertions in general CFTs by solving Ward identities on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour.

We study the scalar and vector channels of gravitational quasinormal modes for Lifshitz black branes emerging in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton and Einstein-Proca theories in four and five dimensions, finding significant differences between the two models. In particular, rather surprisingly, in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model the dispersion relations for the shear and sound modes are given by $ω_{shear} \sim -i\,k^4$ and $ω_{sound}\sim-i \,k^2$, while in the Einstein-Proca model they take the more conventional form $ω_{shear} \sim -i\,k^2$ and $ω_{sound}\sim k$, the proportionality constants depend on the dynamical exponent and the appropriate factors of temperature. Through the holographic duality, this calculation provides information about the relaxation of the momentum and energy flux operators in a putative dual Lifshitz field theory. Comparing with the dispersion relations obtained directly by considering Lifshitz hydrodynamics suggest that the mass density of the equilibrium state in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model is infinite.

General relativity governs the nonlinear dynamics of spacetime, including black holes and their event horizons. We demonstrate that forced black hole horizons exhibit statistically steady turbulent spacetime dynamics consistent with Kolmogorov's theory of 1941. As a proof of principle we focus on black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in a large number of dimensions, where greater analytic control is gained. We also demonstrate that tidal deformations of the horizon induce turbulent dynamics. When set in motion relative to the horizon a deformation develops a turbulent spacetime wake, indicating that turbulent spacetime dynamics may play a role in binary mergers and other strong-field phenomena.

We consider Einstein gravity in AdS in the presence of a deformed conformal boundary metric, in the limit of large spacetime dimension. At leading order we find a new set of effective near-horizon equations. These can be understood as covariant generalisations of the undeformed equations with new source terms due to the curvature. We show that these equations are given by the conservation of the exact second-order Landau-frame hydrodynamic stress tensor. No derivative expansions are invoked in this identification. We use the new equations to study CFTs with 2d lattice deformations, computing their quasi-normal mode spectra and thermal conductivities, both numerically and analytically to quartic order in small lattice amplitude. Many of our results also apply to asymptotically flat spacetimes.
