The use of the standard gas mixture, \ce{C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}}+ \ce{SF_{6}}, has stopped in favor of an alternative green mixture based on \ce{C_{3}H_{2}F_{4}} with the addition of He or \ce{CO_{2}}. The EEE experiment consists of 61 muon telescopes based on Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs), each telescope composed of 3 chambers filled with gas. Several EEE detectors are today completely fluxed with the new ecological mixture. Direct tests of T, CP, CPT symmetries in transitions of neutral K mesons with the KLOE experiment

A data sample collected by the KLOE experiment at DA$Φ$NE corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ is analysed to study the $Δ$t distributions of the $φ\to K_{S}K_{L}\to π^+π^- \: π^{\pm}e^{\mp}ν$ and $φ\to K_{S}K_{L}\to π^{\pm}e^{\mp}ν\: 3π^0$ processes, with $Δ$t the difference of the kaon decay times. A comparison of the measured $Δ$t distributions in the asymptotic region $Δt \gg τ_{S}$ allows to test for the first time T and CPT symmetries in kaon transitions with a precision of few percent, and to observe CP violation with this novel method. △ Less

Measurement of the $K_S \to πe ν$ branching fraction with the KLOE experiment

Abstract: The branching fraction for the decay $K_S \to πe ν$ has been measured with a sample of 300 million $K_S$ mesons produced in $φ\to K_L K_S$ decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. Signal decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of $K_L \to πe ν$ decays are used to evaluate sig… ▽ More The branching fraction for the decay $K_S \to πe ν$ has been measured with a sample of 300 million $K_S$ mesons produced in $φ\to K_L K_S$ decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. Signal decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of $K_L \to πe ν$ decays are used to evaluate signal selection efficiencies. A fit to the reconstructed electron mass distribution finds 49647$\pm$316 signal events. Normalising to the $K_S \to π^+π^-$ decay events the result for the branching fraction is $\mathcal{B}(K_S \to πe ν) = (7.211 \pm 0.046_{\rm stat} \pm 0.052_{\rm syst}) \times10^{-4}$. The combination with our previous measurement gives $\mathcal{B}(K_S \to πe ν) = (7.153 \pm 0.037_{\rm stat} \pm 0.043_{\rm syst}) \times10^{-4}$. From this value we derive $f_+(0)|V_{us}| = 0.2170 \pm 0.009$. △ Less

Abstract: We report on recent progress and next steps in the design of the proposed MATHUSLA Long Lived Particle (LLP) detector for the HL-LHC as part of the Snowmass 2021 process. Our understanding of backgrounds has greatly improved, aided by detailed simulation studies, and significant R&D has been performed on designing the scintillator detectors and understanding their performance. Abstract: The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process $φ\rightarrow K_S K_L \rightarrowπ^+π^-π^+π^-$, which exhibits the characteristic Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into $π^+π^-$ at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon… ▽ More The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process $φ\rightarrow K_S K_L \rightarrowπ^+π^-π^+π^-$, which exhibits the characteristic Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into $π^+π^-$ at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Frascati $φ$-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb$^{-1}$, i.e. to about $1.7 \times 10^9$ $φ\rightarrow K_S K_L$ decays produced. From the fit of the observed $Δt$ distribution, being $Δt$ the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which -- in the most optimistic scenarios -- quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models. △ Less

A suitable site has been identified at LHC Point 5 that is closer to the CMS Interaction Point (IP) than assumed in the LoI. The decay volume has been increased from 20 m to 25 m… ▽ More We report on recent progress in the design of the proposed MATHUSLA Long Lived Particle (LLP) detector for the HL-LHC, updating the information in the original Letter of Intent (LoI), see CDS:LHCC-I-031, arXiv:1811.00927. A suitable site has been identified at LHC Point 5 that is closer to the CMS Interaction Point (IP) than assumed in the LoI. The decay volume has been increased from 20 m to 25 m in height. Engineering studies have been made in order to locate much of the decay volume below ground, bringing the detector even closer to the IP. With these changes, a 100 m x 100 m detector has the same physics reach for large c$τ$ as the 200 m x 200 m detector described in the LoI and other studies. The performance for small c$τ$ is improved because of the proximity to the IP. Detector technology has also evolved while retaining the strip-like sensor geometry in Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) described in the LoI. The present design uses extruded scintillator bars read out using wavelength shifting fibers and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). Operations will be simpler and more robust with much lower operating voltages and without the use of greenhouse gases. Manufacturing is straightforward and should result in cost savings. Understanding of backgrounds has also significantly advanced, thanks to new simulation studies and measurements taken at the MATHUSLA test stand operating above ATLAS in 2018. We discuss next steps for the MATHUSLA collaboration, and identify areas where new members can make particularly important contributions. △ Less

The MRPCs are flowed with a gas mixture based on $C_2H_2F_4$ and $SF_6$, both of which are fluorinated greenhouse gases with a high environmental imp… ▽ More The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project employs Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) for studying the secondary cosmic ray muons in Extensive Air Showers. The array consists of about 60 tracking detectors, sparse on Italian territory and at CERN. The MRPCs are flowed with a gas mixture based on $C_2H_2F_4$ and $SF_6$, both of which are fluorinated greenhouse gases with a high environmental impact on the atmosphere. Due to the restrictions imposed by the European Union, these gases are being phased out of production and their cost is largely increasing. The EEE Collaboration started a campaign to reduce the gas emission from its array with the aim of containing costs and decreasing the experiment global warming impact. One method is to reduce the gas rate in each EEE detector. Another is to develop a gas recirculation system, whose a first prototype has been installed at one of the EEE stations located at CERN. Jointly a parallel strategy is focused on searching for environmental friendly gas mixtures which are able to substitute the standard mixture without affecting the MRPC performance. Radiative $φ\toηγ$ decay is exploited to access the $η$ mesons. No signal is observed in the $π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching f… ▽ More Based on an integrated luminosity of 1.61 fb$^{-1}$ $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE, the Frascati $φ$-factory, a search for the $P$- and $CP$-violating decay $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}$ has been performed. Radiative $φ\toηγ$ decay is exploited to access the $η$ mesons. No signal is observed in the $π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit on the branching fraction at 90\% confidence level is determined to be ${\mathcal B}(η\toπ^{+}π^{-})<4.9\times10^{-6}$, which is approximately three times smaller than the previous KLOE result. MATHUSLA: A Detector Proposal to Explore the Lifetime Frontier at the HL-LHC

Abstract: The observation of long-lived particles at the LHC would reveal physics beyond the Standard Model, could account for the many open issues in our understanding of our universe, and conceivably point to a more complete theory of the fundamental interactions. Such long-lived particle signatures are fundamentally motivated and can appear in virtually every theoretical construct that address the Hierar… ▽ More The observation of long-lived particles at the LHC would reveal physics beyond the Standard Model, could account for the many open issues in our understanding of our universe, and conceivably point to a more complete theory of the fundamental interactions. Such long-lived particle signatures are fundamentally motivated and can appear in virtually every theoretical construct that address the Hierarchy Problem, Dark Matter, Neutrino Masses and the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe. We describe in this document a large detector, MATHUSLA, located on the surface above an HL-LHC $pp$ interaction point, that could observe long-lived particles with lifetimes up to the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit of 0.1 s. We also note that its large detector area allows MATHUSLA to make important contributions to cosmic ray physics. Because of the potential for making a major breakthrough in our conceptual understanding of the universe, long-lived particle searches should have the highest level of priority. △ Less

We present first efficiency and reconstruction studies to verify the viability of this design concept, and we explore some aspects of its total cost. Combined limit on the production of a light gauge boson decaying into $μ^+μ^-$ and $π^+π^-$

Abstract: We searched for the $μ^+μ^-$ decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- γ_{\rm ISR}$ process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $φ$-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible $μ^+ μ^-$ background. A 90\% CL limit on the ratio… ▽ More We searched for the $μ^+μ^-$ decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- γ_{\rm ISR}$ process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $φ$-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible $μ^+ μ^-$ background. A 90\% CL limit on the ratio $\varepsilon^2=α^{\prime}/α$ between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of $ 3\times 10^{-6}-2\times 10^{-7}$ has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- γ_{\rm ISR}$ events. The combined 90\% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the $ρ-ω$ interference region and excludes $\varepsilon^2$ greater than $(13-2)\times 10^{-7}$. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8~$\times\, 10^{-7}$ resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments. △ Less

The measured value of the charge asymmetry for this decay is $A_S = (-4.9 \pm 5.7_{stat} \pm 2.6_{syst}) \times 10^{-3}$, which is almost twice more precise than the previous KLOE result. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for $σ\big(e^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-γ(γ)\big)$. We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range $0.10 < s < 0.95$ GeV$^2$ of $a_μ^{π^+π^-} = (489.8 \pm 1.7_{\rm stat} \pm 4.8_{\rm sys} ) \times 10^{-10}$. △ Less

Abstract: We have measured the running of the effective QED coupling constant $α(s)$ in the time-like region $0.6<\sqrt s< 0.975$ GeV with the KLOE detector at DA$Φ$NE using the Initial State Radiation process $e^+e^-\toμ^+ μ^-γ$. It represents the first measurement of the running of $α(s)$ in this energy region. Abstract: A measurement of the vector to pseudoscalar conversion decay $φ\to π^0 e^+e^-$ with the KLOE experiment is presented. A sample of $\sim 9500$ signal events was selected from a data set of 1.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} \sim m_φ$ collected at the DA$Φ$NE $e^+e^-$ collider. Abstract: The neutral current e+/-p cross section has been measured up to values of Bjorken x of approximately 1 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 187 inv. pb of e-p and 142 inv. pb of e+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 318GeV. Differential cross sections in x and Q2, the exchanged boson virtuality, are presented for Q2 geq 725GeV2. A new limit on the CP violating decay KS -> 3pi0 with the KLOE experiment

Abstract: We have carried out a new direct search for the CP violating decay KS -> 3pi0 with 1.7 fb^-1 of e+e- collisions collected by the KLOE detector at the phi-factory DAFNE. We have searched for this decay in a sample of about 5.9 x 10^8 KS KL events tagging the KS by means of the KL interaction in the calorimeter and requiring six prompt photons. With respect to our previous search, the analysis has b… ▽ More We have carried out a new direct search for the CP violating decay KS -> 3pi0 with 1.7 fb^-1 of e+e- collisions collected by the KLOE detector at the phi-factory DAFNE. We have searched for this decay in a sample of about 5.9 x 10^8 KS KL events tagging the KS by means of the KL interaction in the calorimeter and requiring six prompt photons. With respect to our previous search, the analysis has been improved by increasing of a factor four the tagged sample and by a more effective background rejection of fake KS tags and spurious clusters. We find no candidates in data and simulated background samples, while we expect 0.12 standard model events. Normalizing to the number of KS -> 2pi0 events in the same sample, we set the upper limit on BR(KS -> 3pi0 < 2.6 x 10^-8 at 90% C.L., five times lower than the previous limit. We also set the upper limit on the eta_000 parameter, |eta_000 | < 0.0088 at 90% C.L., improving by a factor two the latest direct measurement. △ Less

Abstract: We present a measurement of η meson production in photon-photon interactions produced by electron-positron beams colliding with \sqrt{s}=1 GeV. The measurement is done with the KLOE detector at the φ-factory DAΦNE with an integrated luminosity of 0.24 fb^{-1}. The e^+e^- --> e^+e^-η cross section is measured without detecting the outgoing electron and positron, selecting the decays η-->π^+π^-π^0 a… ▽ More We present a measurement of η meson production in photon-photon interactions produced by electron-positron beams colliding with \sqrt{s}=1 GeV. The measurement is done with the KLOE detector at the φ-factory DAΦNE with an integrated luminosity of 0.24 fb^{-1}. The e^+e^- --> e^+e^-η cross section is measured without detecting the outgoing electron and positron, selecting the decays η-->π^+π^-π^0 and η-->π^0π^0π^0. The most relevant background is due to e^+e^- --> ηγ when the monochromatic photon escapes detection. The cross section for this process is measured as σ(e^+e^- -->ηγ) = (856 \pm 8_{stat} \pm 16_{syst}) pb. The combined result for the e^+e^- -->e^+e^-η cross section is σ(e^+e^- -->e^+e^-η) = (32.72 \pm 1.27_{stat} \pm 0.70_{syst}) pb. From this we derive the partial width Γ(η-->γγ) = (520 \pm 20_{stat} \pm 13_{syst}) eV. This is in agreement with the world average and is the most precise measurement to date. △ Less

Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, etajet, for jets with ETjet > 17 GeV and -1 < etajet < 2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of etajet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high etajet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alphas2) terms. Values of alphas(Mz) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of alphas(Mz) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is alphas(Mz) = 0.1206 +0.0023 -0.0022 (exp.) +0.0042 -0.0035 (th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision. △ Less

The analysis was carried out in the kinematic range of 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 32 < W < 180 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The two-pion invariant-mass distribution is interpreted in terms of the pion electromagnetic form factor, |F(Mππ)|, assuming that the studied mass range includes the contributions of the ρ, ρ' and ρ" vector-meson states. The masses and widths of the resonances were obtained and the Q2 dependence of the cross-section ratios σ(ρ' \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) and σ(ρ" \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) was extracted. Clear scaling violations are observed. Predictions based on different approaches to fragmentation were compared to the measurements. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations interfaced to the Lund string fragmentation model describe the data reasonably well in the whole range measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations based on fragmentation functions, FFs, extracted from e+e- data alone, fail to describe the measurements. The calculations based on FFs extracted from a global analysis including e+e-, ep and pp data give an improved description. The measurements presented in this paper have the potential to further constrain the FFs of quarks, anti-quarks and gluons yielding K0s and Lambda/bar Lambda strange hadrons. △ Less
