Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multimegaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1 - 20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

The main objectives of the KM3NeT Collaboration are i) the discovery and subsequent observation of high-energy neutrino sources in the Universe and ii) the determination of the mass hierarchy of neutrinos. These objectives are strongly motivated by two recent important discoveries, namely: 1) The high-energy astrophysical neutrino signal reported by IceCube and 2) the sizable contribution of electron neutrinos to the third neutrino mass eigenstate as reported by Daya Bay, Reno and others. To meet these objectives, the KM3NeT Collaboration plans to build a new Research Infrastructure consisting of a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. A phased and distributed implementation is pursued which maximises the access to regional funds, the availability of human resources and the synergetic opportunities for the earth and sea sciences community. Three suitable deep-sea sites are identified, namely off-shore Toulon (France), Capo Passero (Italy) and Pylos (Greece). The infrastructure will consist of three so-called building blocks. A building block comprises 115 strings, each string comprises 18 optical modules and each optical module comprises 31 photo-multiplier tubes. Each building block thus constitutes a 3-dimensional array of photo sensors that can be used to detect the Cherenkov light produced by relativistic particles emerging from neutrino interactions. Two building blocks will be configured to fully explore the IceCube signal with different methodology, improved resolution and complementary field of view, including the Galactic plane. One building block will be configured to precisely measure atmospheric neutrino oscillations.

A prototype detection unit of the KM3NeT deep-sea neutrino telescope has been installed at 3500m depth 80km offshore the Italian coast. KM3NeT in its final configuration will contain several hundreds of detection units. Each detection unit is a mechanical structure anchored to the sea floor, held vertical by a submerged buoy and supporting optical modules for the detection of Cherenkov light emitted by charged secondary particles emerging from neutrino interactions. This prototype string implements three optical modules with 31 photomultiplier tubes each. These optical modules were developed by the KM3NeT Collaboration to enhance the detection capability of neutrino interactions. The prototype detection unit was operated since its deployment in May 2014 until its decommissioning in July 2015. Reconstruction of the particle trajectories from the data requires a nanosecond accuracy in the time calibration. A procedure for relative time calibration of the photomultiplier tubes contained in each optical module is described. This procedure is based on the measured coincidences produced in the sea by the 40K background light and can easily be expanded to a detector with several thousands of optical modules. The time offsets between the different optical modules are obtained using LED nanobeacons mounted inside them. A set of data corresponding to 600 hours of livetime was analysed. The results show good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations of the expected optical background and the signal from atmospheric muons. An almost background-free sample of muons was selected by filtering the time correlated signals on all the three optical modules. The zenith angle of the selected muons was reconstructed with a precision of about 3°.

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. The $X(3872)$ is found to decay predominantly through S wave and an upper limit of $4\%$ at $95\%$ C.L. is set on the fraction of D wave.

The forward spectrometer allows access to a kinematic range of $2.0<η<4.8$ in pseudorapidity, momenta down to $2\;$GeV/$c$ and transverse momenta down to $0.2\;$GeV/$c$. The measurements are performed using minimum-bias events with at least one charged particle in the kinematic acceptance. The results are presented as functions of pseudorapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions from several Monte Carlo event generators.

Measurements of $b$-hadron lifetimes are reported using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $7$Tev. Using the exclusive decays $B^+\to J/ψK^+$, $B^0\to J/ψK^*(892)^0$, $B^0\to J/ψK^0_{\rm S}$, $Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψφ$ the average decay times in these modes are measured to be $τ_{B^+\to J/ψK^+}$ = $1.637 \pm$ 0.004 $\pm$ 0.003 ps, $τ_{B^0\to J/ψK^*(892)^0}$ = $1.524 \pm$ 0.006 $\pm$ 0.004 ps, $τ_{B^0\to J/ψK^0_{\rm S}}$ = $1.499 \pm$ 0.013 $\pm$ 0.005 ps, $τ_{Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ}$ = $1.415 \pm$ 0.027 $\pm$ 0.006 ps and $τ_{B^0_s\to J/ψφ}$ = $1.480 \pm$ 0.011 $\pm$ 0.005 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These represent the most precise lifetime measurements in these decay modes. In addition, ratios of these lifetimes, and the ratio of the decay-width difference, $ΔΓ_d$, to the average width, $Γ_d$, in the $B^0$ system, $ΔΓ_d/Γ_d = -0.044 \pm 0.025 \pm 0.011$, are reported. All quantities are found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations.

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons decaying into the dimuon final state is studied with the LHCb detector using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.3 pb^{-1} collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as functions of the Upsilon transverse momentum and rapidity, over the ranges p_T<15 GeV/c and 2.0<y<4.5. The total cross-sections in this kinematic region, assuming unpolarised production, are measured to be sigma(pp -> Upsilon(1S) X) x B(Upsilon(1S) -> mu+mu-) = 1.111 +/- 0.043 +/- 0.044 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(2S) X) x B(Upsilon(2S) -> mu+mu-) = 0.264 +/- 0.023 +/- 0.011 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(3S) X) x B(Upsilon(3S) -> mu+mu-) = 0.159 +/- 0.020 +/- 0.007 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

The $Λ^0_{b} \rightarrow \overline{\kern -0.2em K}^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}p π^{-}$ decay is observed with a significance of $8.6\,σ$, with branching fraction \begin{eqnarray*}
{\cal{B}}(Λ^0_{b} \rightarrow \overline{\kern -0.2em K}^0 p π^{-}) & = & \left(1.26 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.34 \pm 0.05 \right) \times 10^{-5} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, from the ratio of fragmentation fractions $f_Λ/f_{d}$, and from the branching fraction of the $B^0 \rightarrow K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}π^{+}π^{-}$ normalisation channel, respectively. A first measurement is made of the $CP$ asymmetry, giving \begin{eqnarray*}
A_{C/!P} (Λ^0_{b} \rightarrow \overline{\kern -0.2em K}^0 p π^{-}) & = & 0.22 \pm 0.13\mathrm{\,(stat)} \pm 0.03\mathrm{\,(syst)} \, . \end{eqnarray*} No significant signals are seen for $Λ^0_{b} \rightarrow K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}p K^{-}$ decays, $Ξ^{0}_{b}$ decays to both the $K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}p π^{-}$ and $K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}p K^{-}$ final states, and the $Λ^0_{b} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s} (\rightarrow K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S} K^{-}) p$ decay, and upper limits on their branching fractions are reported.

The measured lifetime is $$τ= 509 \pm 8 \pm 12 \mathrm{~fs},$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

In the absence of a signal, upper limits are set on the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(B^- \to π^+μ^-μ^-)$ as functions of neutrino mass and lifetime. These limits are on the order of $10^{-9}$ for short neutrino lifetimes of 1 ps or less. Limits are also set on the coupling between the muon and a possible fourth-generation neutrino.

The first measurement of the effective lifetime of the $\bar{B}_s^0$ meson in the decay $\bar{B}_s^0\to D_s^-D_s^+$ is reported using a proton-proton collision dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment. The measured value of the $\bar{B}_s^0\to D_s^-D_s^+$ effective lifetime is $1.379\pm0.026\pm0.017$ ps, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. This lifetime translates into a measurement of the decay width of the light $\bar{B}_s^0$ mass eigenstate of Γ_L$=0.725\pm0.014\pm0.009$ ps$^{-1}$. The $\bar{B}_s^0$ lifetime is also measured using the flavor-specific $\bar{B}_s^0\to D^-D_s^+$ decay to be $1.52\pm0.15\pm0.01 {\rm ps}$.

The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. Results are shown with two jet transverse momentum thresholds, 10 and 20 GeV, for both the overall cross-section within the fiducial volume, and for six differential cross-section measurements. The fiducial volume requires that both the jet and the muons from the Z boson decay are produced in the forward direction ($2.0<η<4.5$). The results show good agreement with theoretical predictions at the second-order expansion in the coupling of the strong interaction.

A study of indirect CP violation in $D^0$ mesons through the determination of the parameter $A_Γ$ is presented using a data sample of $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector and recorded at the centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. The parameter $A_Γ$ is the asymmetry of the effective lifetimes measured in decays of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons to the CP eigenstates $K^-K^+$ and $π^-π^+$. Fits to the data sample yield $A_Γ(KK)=(-0.35\pm0.62\pm0.12)\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_Γ(ππ)=(0.33\pm1.06\pm0.14)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results represent the world's best measurements of these quantities. They show no difference in $A_Γ$ between the two final states and no indication of CP violation.

The charmless decays $B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}π^{\pm}$ are reconstructed in a data set, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected by LHCb in 2011. The inclusive charge asymmetries of these modes are measured to be $A_{CP}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{\pm}) =-0.141 \pm 0.040 (stat) \pm 0.018 (syst) \pm 0.007 (J/ψK^{\pm})$ and $A_{CP}(B^{\pm} \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}π^{\pm}) = 0.117 \pm 0.021 (stat) \pm 0.009 (syst) \pm 0.007 (J/ψK^{\pm})$, where the third uncertainty is due to the CP asymmetry of the $B^{\pm} \rightarrow J/ψK^{\pm}$ reference mode. In addition to the inclusive CP asymmetries, larger asymmetries are observed in localized regions of phase space.

Upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the ratio of the Xi_cc^+ production cross-section times branching fraction to that of the Lambda_c^+, R, are given as a function of the Xi_cc^+ mass and lifetime. The largest upper limits range from R < 1.5 x 10^-2 for a lifetime of 100 fs to R < 3.9 x 10^-4 for a lifetime of 400 fs.

No signal is observed and an upper limit on the relative branching fraction with respect to the resonant decay mode D0 to π+ π- φ(to μ+ μ-), under the assumption of a phase-space model, is found to be B(D0 to π+ π- mu+ mu-)/B(D0 to π+ π- φ(to μ+ μ-)) < 0.96 at the 90% confidence level. The upper limit on the absolute branching fraction is evaluated to be B(D0 to π+ π- μ+ μ-) < 5.5 x 10-7 at 90% confidence level. This is the most stringent to date.

B^0_(s) -> Jψf_1(1285) decays are seen for the first time, and the branching fractions are measured. Using these rates, the f_1(1285) mixing angle between strange and non-strange components of its wave function in the q-qbar structure model is determined to be \pm (24.0^{+3.1+0.6}_{-2.6-0.8}) degrees. Implications on the possible tetraquark nature of the f_1(1285) are discussed.

Measurement of D0-D0bar mixing parameters and search for CP violation using D0->K+pi- decays

Abstract:
Measurements of charm mixing parameters from the decay-time-dependent ratio of D0->K+pi- to D0->K-pi+ rates and the charge-conjugate ratio are reported. Measurements of charm mixing parameters from the decay-time-dependent ratio of D0->K+pi- to D0->K-pi+ rates and the charge-conjugate ratio are reported. The analysis uses data, corresponding to 3 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, from proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energies recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the limit of charge-parity (CP) symmetry, the mixing parameters are determined to be x'^2=(5.5 +- 4.9)x10^{-5}, y'= (4.8 +- 1.0)x10^{-3}, and R_D=(3.568 +- 0.066)x10^{-3}. Allowing for CP violation, the mixing parameters are determined separately for D0 and D0bar mesons yielding A_D = (-0.7 +- 1.9)%, for the direct CP-violating asymmetry, and 0.75 < |q/p|< 1.24 at the 68.3% confidence level, where q and p are parameters that describe the mass eigenstates of the neutral charm mesons in terms of the flavor eigenstates. This is the most precise determination of these parameters from a single experiment and shows no evidence for CP violation.

The production of $J/ψ$ mesons with rapidity $1.5<y<4.0$ or $-5.0<y<-2.5$ and transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}<14 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ is studied with the LHCb detector in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5 \mathrm{TeV}$. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about $1.6 \mathrm{nb}^{-1}$. For the first time the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production ratio are determined separately for prompt $J/ψ$ mesons and $J/ψ$ from $b$-hadron decays. Clear suppression of prompt $J/ψ$ production with respect to proton-proton collisions at large rapidity is observed, while the production of $J/ψ$ from $b$-hadron decays is less suppressed. These results show good agreement with available theoretical predictions. The measurement shows that cold nuclear matter effects are important for interpretations of the related quark-gluon plasma signatures in heavy-ion collisions.

The first observation of the B0->J/ψK+K- decay is presented with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0/fb of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψK+K-) = (2.53 +/- 0.31 +/- 0.19)x10^{-6}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. An amplitude analysis of the final state in the B0->J/ψK+K- decay is performed to separate resonant and nonresonant contributions in the K+K- spectrum. Evidence of the a0(980) resonance is reported with statistical significance of 3.9 standard deviations. The corresponding product branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)=(4.70 +/- 3.31 +/- 0.72)x10^{-7}, yielding an upper limit of B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)<9.0x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level. No evidence of the resonant decay B0->J/ψφ\; is found, and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B(B0->J/ψφ)< 1.9x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level.

The result of a search for the decay Bc+ -> Bs0 pi+ is presented, using the Bs0 -> Ds- pi+ and Bs0 -> J/psi Phi channels. The analysis is based on a data sample of pp collisions collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb-1 taken at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and 2 fb-1 taken at 8 TeV. The decay Bc+ -> Bs0 pi+ is observed with significance in excess of five standard deviations independently in both decay channels. The measured product of the ratio of cross-sections and branching fraction is sigma(Bc+)/sigma(Bs0) x BR(Bc+ -> Bs0 pi+) = (2.37 \pm 0.31 (stat) \pm 0.11 (syst)^{+0.17}_{-0.13} (tau_Bc)) x 10^-3 in the pseudorapidity range 2 < eta(B) < 5, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the Bc lifetime. This is the first observation of a B meson decaying to another B meson via the weak interaction.

A search for CP violation in the phase-space structures of D0 and D0bar decays to the final states K-K+pi-pi+ and pi-pi+pi+pi- is presented. The search is carried out with a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1 collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV. For the K-K+pi-pi+ final state, the four-body phase space is divided into 32 bins, each bin with approximately 1800 decays. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 9.1%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 6.5% observed. The phase space of the pi-pi+pi+pi- final state is partitioned into 128 bins, each bin with approximately 2500 decays. The $p$-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 41%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 5.5% observed. All results are consistent with the hypothesis of no CP violation at the current sensitivity.

We present a measurement of form-factor independent angular observables in the decay \mbox{$B^0\to K^{*}(892)^{0}μ^+ μ^-$}. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV. Four observables are measured in six bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, $q^2$, in the range $0.1<q^2<19.0$GeV$^{2}$/c$^{4}$. Agreement with Standard Model predictions is found for 23 of the 24 measurements. A local discrepancy, corresponding to $3.7$ Gaussian standard deviations, is observed in one $q^2$ bin for one of the observables. Considering the 24 measurements as independent, the probability to observe such a discrepancy, or larger, in one is $0.5\%$.

Production and detection asymmetries are corrected for using the $B^+ \rightarrow J/ψK^+$ decay as a control mode. Averaged over all the bins, the $C¶$ asymmetry is found to be ${{\cal A}_{C¶} = 0.000\pm 0.033{(stat.)} \pm0.005 {(syst.)} \pm 0.007{}(J/ψK^+)}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the $C¶$ asymmetry of the control mode. This is consistent with the Standard Model prediction.

The $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ mixing frequencies, $Δm_s$ and $Δm_d$, are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV during 2011. Around 1.8x10^6 candidate events are selected of the type $B^0_{(s)} \to D^-_{(s)} μ^+$ (+ anything), where about half are from peaking and combinatorial backgrounds. To determine the B decay times, a correction is required for the momentum carried by missing particles, which is performed using a simulation-based statistical method. Associated production of muons or mesons allows us to tag the initial-state flavour and so to resolve oscillations due to mixing. We obtain Δm_s = (17.93 \pm 0.22 (stat) \pm 0.15 (syst)) ps^{-1}, Δm_d = (0.503 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.013 (syst)) ps^{-1}. The hypothesis of no oscillations is rejected by the equivalent of 5.8 standard deviations for $B^0_s$ and 13.0 standard deviations for $B^0$. This is the first observation of $B^0_s$ mixing to be made using only semileptonic decays.

An analysis of $B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 π^+$ and $B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 K^+$ decays is performed with the LHCb experiment. The $pp$ collision data used correspond to integrated luminosities of $1{\,fb}^{-1}$ and $2{\,fb}^{-1}$ collected at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ and $\sqrt{s}=8\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$, respectively. The ratio of branching fractions and the direct {\it CP} asymmetries are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 K^+)/\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 π^+) = 0.064 \pm 0.009\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.004\textrm{(syst.)}$, $\mathcal{A}^{\it CP}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 π^+) = -0.022 \pm 0.025\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.010\textrm{(syst.)}$ and $\mathcal{A}^{\it CP}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 K^+) = -0.21 \pm 0.14\textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.01\textrm{(syst.)}$. The data sample taken at $\sqrt{s}=7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ is used to search for $B_c^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 K^+$ decays and results in the upper limit $(f_c\cdot\mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 K^+))/(f_u\cdot\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle S}^0 π^+)) < 5.8\times10^{-2}\textrm{at 90% confidence level}$, where $f_c$ and $f_u$ denote the hadronisation fractions of a $\bar{b}$ quark into a $B_c^+$ or a $B^+$ meson, respectively.

The results of a search for the rare two-body charmless baryonic decays $B^0 \to p \bar{p}$ and $B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}$ are reported. The analysis uses a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9 fb$^{-1}$, of $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. An excess of $B^0 \to p \bar{p}$ candidates with respect to background expectations is seen with a statistical significance of 3.3 standard deviations. This is the first evidence for a two-body charmless baryonic $B^0$ decay. No significant $B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}$ signal is observed, leading to an improvement of three orders of magnitude over previous bounds. If the excess events are interpreted as signal, the 68.3% confidence level intervals on the branching fractions are {eqnarray} \cal{B}(B^0 \to p \bar{p}) & = & (1.47 \,^{+0.62}_{-0.51} \,^{+0.35}_{-0.14}) \times 10^{-8} \,, *{0.3cm} \cal{B}(B_s^0 \to p \bar{p}) & = & (2.84 \,^{+2.03}_{-1.68} \,^{+0.85}_{-0.18}) \times 10^{-8} \,, {eqnarray} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

A search for charmless three-body decays of $B^0$ and $B_{s}^0$ mesons with a $K_{\rm S}^0$ meson in the final state is performed using the $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. Branching fractions of the $B_{(s)}^0 \to K_{\rm S}^0 h^{+} h^{\prime -}$ decay modes ($h^{(\prime)} = π, K$), relative to the well measured $B^0 \to K_{\rm S}^0 π^{+} π^{-}$ decay, are obtained. First observation of the decay modes $B_s^0 \to K_{\rm S}^0 K^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ and $B_s^0 \to K_{\rm S}^0 π^{+} π^{-}$ and confirmation of the decay $B^0 \to K_{\rm S}^0 K^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ are reported. A broad peaking structure is observed in the dimuon spectrum of $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decays in the kinematic region where the kaon has a low recoil against the dimuon system. The structure is consistent with interference between the $B^+ \to K^+ μ^+μ^-$ decay and a resonance and has a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations. The mean and width of the resonance are measured to be $4191^{+9}_{-8}\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V/}c^2$ and $65^{+22}_{-16}\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V/}c^2$, respectively, where the uncertainties include statistical and systematic contributions. These measurements are compatible with the properties of the $ψ(4160)$ meson. First observations of both the decay $B^+ \to ψ(4160) K^+$ and the subsequent decay $ψ(4160) \to μ^+μ^-$ are reported. The resonant decay and the interference contribution make up 20\,% of the yield in the low recoil region, which is larger than theoretical estimates.

Dynamics and direct $C¶$ violation in three-body charmless decays of charged $B$ mesons to a proton, an antiproton and a light meson (pion or kaon) are studied using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0$ {\,fb}^{-1}$, collected by the ${LHCb}$ experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Production spectra are determined as a function of Dalitz-plot and helicity variables. The forward-backward asymmetry of the light meson in the $p\bar p$ rest frame is measured. No significant $C¶$ asymmetry in $B^+ \to p \bar p K^+$ decay is found in any region of the Dalitz plane. We present the first observation of the decay $B^+ \to \kern 0.1em\bar{\kern -0.1emΛ}(1520)(\to K^+\bar p)p$ near the $K^+\bar p$ threshold and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \kern 0.1em\bar{\kern -0.1emΛ}(1520)p)=(3.9^{+1.0}_{-0.9} (\mathrm{stat})\pm0.1 (\mathrm{syst})\pm0.3 (\mathrm{BF}))\times 10^{-7}$, where BF denotes the uncertainty on secondary branching fractions.

The observed number of $B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ and $B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ candidates is consistent with background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions of both decays are determined to be $BR(B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) < 1.1 \,(1.4) \times 10^{-8}$ and $BR (B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) < 2.8 \,(3.7) \times 10^{-9}$ at 90% (95%) confidence level (C.L.). These limits are a factor of twenty lower than those set by previous experiments. Lower bounds on the Pati-Salam leptoquark masses are also calculated, $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 107$ TeV/c$^2$ and $M_{\rm LQ} (B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) > 126$ TeV/c$^2$ at 95% C.L., and are a factor of two higher than the previous bounds.

Abstract:
A study of $D^+π^-$, $D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*+}π^-$ final states is performed using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $fb^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The $D_1(2420)^0$ resonance is observed in the $D^{*+}π^-$ final state and the $D^*_2(2460)$ resonance is observed in the $D^+π^-$, $D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*+}π^-$ final states.…

A study of $D^+π^-$, $D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*+}π^-$ final states is performed using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $fb^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The $D_1(2420)^0$ resonance is observed in the $D^{*+}π^-$ final state and the $D^*_2(2460)$ resonance is observed in the $D^+π^-$, $D^0 π^+$ and $D^{*+}π^-$ final states. For both resonances, their properties and spin-parity assignments are obtained. In addition, two natural parity and two unnatural parity resonances are observed in the mass region between 2500 and 2800 MeV. Further structures in the region around 3000 MeV are observed in all the $D^{*+}π^-$, $D^+π^-$ and $D^0 π^+$ final states.

Prompt production of charmonium $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons is studied using proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$TeV. The $χ_{c}$ mesons are identified through their decay to $J/ψγ$, with $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$ using photons that converted in the detector. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector, is used to measure the relative prompt production rate of $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ in the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$ as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum from 3 to 20 GeV$/c$. First evidence for $χ_{c0}$ meson production at a high-energy hadron collider is also presented.

The ratio of the Λb baryon lifetime to that of the B0 meson is measured using 1.0/fb of integrated luminosity in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC. The Λb baryon is observed for the first time in the decay mode Λb -> J/ψpK-, while the B0 meson decay used is the well known B0 -> J/ψpi+K- mode, where the pi+ K- mass is consistent with that of the K*0(892) meson. The ratio of the Λb baryon lifetime to that of the B0 meson is measured using 1.0/fb of integrated luminosity in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC. The Λb baryon is observed for the first time in the decay mode Λb -> J/ψpK-, while the B0 meson decay used is the well known B0 -> J/ψpi+K- mode, where the pi+ K- mass is consistent with that of the K*0(892) meson. The ratio of lifetimes is measured to be 0.976 +/- 0.012 +/- 0.006, in agreement with theoretical expectations based on the heavy quark expansion. Using previous determinations of the B0 meson lifetime, the Λb lifetime is found to be 1.482 +/- 0.018 +/- 0.012 ps. In both cases the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

The analysis is based on a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions, collected with the LHCb detector. An excess with 2.8$\,σ$ significance is seen for the decay $B^{0}_{s} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}$ and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set at the 90 % confidence level: ${\cal B}(B^{0}_{s} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}) < 4.8 \times 10^{-6}$, which is the first such limit. No significant signals are seen for $B^{0} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}$ and $B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}$ decays, for which the corresponding limits are set: ${\cal{B}}(B^{0} \to J/ψ p \overline{p}) < 5.2 \times 10^{-7}$, which significantly improves the existing limit; and ${\cal{B}}(B^{+} \to J/ψ p \overline{p} π^{+}) < 5.0 \times 10^{-7}$, which is the first limit on this branching fraction.
