We also comment on the demonstration of the Fierz-Pauli constraints for the general case of arbitrary spin (helicity).

These models are designated by $i=1,2,3$ and $4$, representing the order in derivatives. Our results show that the four descriptions are quantum equivalent through comparison of their correlation functions, up to contact terms. A geometrical approach is demonstrated to be a useful tool in describing the third and fourth order models. The construction of the master action relies on the introduction of mixing terms, which must be free of particle content. We use the helicity decomposition method to verify the absence of particle content in these terms, ensuring the proper functioning of the master action.

We also show that, surprisingly a shorthand notation in terms of differential operators applied in the bosonic cases of spins 2 and 3, can also be defined to the fermionic case. With the help of projection operators, we have also obtained the propagator and analyzed unitarity in $D$ dimensions of a second order spin-3/2 doublet model. Once we demonstrate that this doublet model is free of ghosts, we provide a master action interpolating such model with a fourth order theory which has several similarities with the spin-2 linearized New Massive Gravity theory.

The high number of derivatives avoids the use of auxiliary fields which has been so far an obstacle for a successful soldering procedure. The resulting doublet model is a new Lagrangian with six orders in derivatives and no auxiliary field. It may be regarded as a spin-3 analogue of the linearized `New Massive Gravity'. We check its particle content via a gauge invariant and Lorentz covariant analysis of the analytic structure of the two-point amplitude with the help of spin-3 analogues of the Barnes and Rivers projection operators. The particle content is alternatively confirmed in a specific non-covariant gauge by a decomposition in helicity variables. The soldered model is ghost free and contains two physical states as expected for a parity doublet.

There are two covariant descriptions of massless spin-2 particles in $D=3+1$ via a symmetric rank-2 tensor: the linearized Einstein-Hilbert (LEH) theory and the Weyl plus transverse diffeomorphism (WTDIFF) invariant model. From the LEH theory one can obtain the linearized New Massive Gravity (NMG) in $D=2+1$ via Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction followed by a dual master action. Here we show that a similar route takes us from the
WTDIFF model to a linearized scalar tensor NMG which belongs to a larger class of consistent spin-0 modifications of NMG. We also show that a traceless master action applied to a parity singlet furnishes two new spin-2 selfdual models.
Moreover, we examine the singular replacement $h_{μν} \to h_{μν} - η_{μν}h/D$ and prove that it leads to consistent massive spin-2 models in $D=2+1$. They include linearized versions of unimodular topologically massive gravity (TMG) and unimodular NMG. Although the free part of those unimodular theories are Weyl invariant, we do not expect any improvement in the renormalizability. Both the linearized K-term (in NMG) and the linearized gravitational Chern-Simons term (in TMG) are invariant under longitudinal reparametrizations $δh_{μν} = \p_μ\p_νζ$ which is not a symmetry of the WTDIFF Einstein-Hilbert term. Therefore, we still have one degree of freedom whose propagator behaves like $1/p^2$ for large momentum.

Using different types of embeddings of equations of motion we investigate the existence of generalizations of the "New Massive Gravity" (NMG) model with the same particle content (massive gravitons). By using the Weyl symmetry as a guiding principle for the embeddings we show that the Noether gauge embedding approach leads us to a sixth order model in derivatives with either a massive or a massless ghost. If the Weyl symmetry is implemented by means of a Stueckelberg field we obtain a new scalar-tensor model for massive gravitons. It is ghost free and Weyl invariant at linearized level. The model can be nonlinearly completed into a scalar field coupled to the NMG theory. The elimination of the scalar field leads to a nonlocal modification of the NMG.
We also prove to all orders in derivatives that there is no local, ghost free embedding of the linearized NMG equations of motion around Minkowski space when written in terms of one symmetric tensor. Regarding that point, NMG differs from the Fierz-Pauli theory, since in later case we can replace the Einstein-Hilbert action by specific $f(R,\Box\, R)$ generalizations and still keep the theory ghost free at linearized level.

Such massless theory has no particle content in $D=3$ and gives rise, via master action, to a dual higher order (in derivatives) description of massive spin-2 particles in $D=3$ where both the second and the fourth order terms are Weyl invariant, contrary to the linearized New Massive Gravity. However, only the fourth order term is invariant under arbitrary antisymmetric shifts. Consequently, the antisymmetric part of the tensor $e_{[μν]}$ propagates at large momentum as $1/p^2$ instead of $1/p^4$. So, the same kind of obstacle for the renormalizability of the New Massive Gravity reappears in this nonsymmetric higher order description of massive spin-2 particles.

The TMBF model is dual to a first-order (in derivatives) formulation of the Maxwell-Proca theory where the antisymmetric field plays the role of an auxiliary field. Since the Maxwell-Proca theory also admits a first-order version which makes use of an auxiliary symmetric tensor, we investigate here a possible generalization of the TMBF model where the photon acquires mass via coupling to a symmetric tensor. We show that it is indeed possible to build up dual models to the Maxwell-Proca theory where the U(1) gauge symmetry is manifest without Higgs field, but after a local field redefinition the vector field eats up the trace of the symmetric tensor and becomes massive. So the explicit U(1) symmetry can be removed unlike the TMBF model.

They are of first-, second-,third- and fourth-order ($r=1,2,3,4$) respectively. Here we show that the generalized soldering of the opposite helicity models $S_{SD+}^{(4)}$ and $S_{SD-}^{(4)}$ leads to the linearized form of the new massive gravity suggested by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT) similarly to the soldering of $S_{SD+}^{(3)}$ and $S_{SD-}^{(3)}$. We argue why in both cases we have the same result. We also find out a triple master action which interpolates between the three dual models: linearized BHT theory, $S_{SD+}^{(3)} + S_{SD-}^{(3)}$ and $S_{SD+}^{(4)} + S_{SD-}^{(4)}$. By comparing gauge invariant correlation functions we deduce dual maps between those models. Here we derive a new self-dual model of fourth-order, $\cL {SD}^{(4)}$, which follows from the third-order model (linearized topologically massive gravity) via Noether embedment of the linearized Weyl symmetry. In fact, each self-dual model can be obtained from the previous one $ \cL {SD}^{(i)} \to \cL {SD}^{(i+1)}, i=1,2,3$ by the Noether embedment of an appropriate gauge symmetry, culminating in $\cL {SD}^{(4)}$. The new model may be identified with the linearized version of $\cL {HDTMG} = ε^{μνρ} Γ_{μγ}^ε(\p_νΓ_{ερ}^γ+ (2/3)Γ_{νδ}^γΓ_{ρε}^δ) /8 m + \sqrt{-g}(R_{μν} R^{νμ} - 3 R^2/8) /2 m^2 $. We also construct a master action relating the third-order self-dual model to $\cL {SD}^{(4)}$ by means of a mixing term with no particle content which assures spectrum equivalence of $\cL {SD}^{(4)}$ to other lower-order self-dual models despite its pure higher derivative nature and the absence of the Einstein-Hilbert action. The relevant degrees of freedom of $\cL {SD}^{(4)}$ are encoded in a rank-two tensor which is symmetric, traceless and transverse due to trivial (non-dynamic) identities, contrary to other spin-2 self-dual models. The direct sum of a couple of Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) gauge theories of opposite helicities $\pm 1$ does not lead to a Proca theory in $D=2+1$, although both theories share the same spectrum. However, it is known that by adding an interference term between both helicities we can join the complementary pieces together and obtain the physically expected result. A generalized soldering procedure can be defined to generate the missing interference term. Here we show that the same procedure can be applied to join together $\pm 2$ helicity states in a full off-shell manner. In particular, by using second-order (in derivatives) self-dual models of helicities $\pm 2$ (spin two analogues of MCS models) the Fierz-Pauli theory is obtained after soldering. Remarkably, if we replace the second-order models by third-order self-dual models (linearized topologically massive gravity) of opposite helicities we end up after soldering exactly with the new massive gravity theory of Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend in its linearized approximation.

In the first part of this work we show the decoupling (up to contact terms) of redundant degrees of freedom which appear in the covariant description of spin two massive particles in $D=2+1$. We make use of a master action which interpolates, without solving any constraints, between a first, second and third order (in derivatives) self-dual model. An explicit dual map between those models is derived. In our approach the absence of ghosts in the third order self-dual model, which corresponds to a quadratic truncation of topologically massive gravity, is due to the triviality (no particle content) of the Einstein-Hilbert action in $D=2+1$. In the second part of the work, also in $D=2+1$, we prove the quantum equivalence of the gauge invariant sector of a couple of self-dual models of opposite helicities (+2 and -2) and masses $m_+$ and $m_-$ to a generalized self-dual model which contains a quadratic Einstein-Hilbert action, a Chern-Simons term of first order and a Fierz-Pauli mass term. The use of a first order Chern-Simons term instead of a third order one avoids conflicts with the sign of the Einstein-Hilbert action.

Abstract:
The use of master actions to prove duality at quantum level becomes cumbersome if one of the dual fields interacts nonlinearly with other fields. This is the case of the theory considered here consisting of U(1) scalar fields coupled to a self-dual field through a linear and a quadratic term in the self-dual field. Integrating perturbatively over the scalar fields and deriving effective actions…

Integrating perturbatively over the scalar fields and deriving effective actions for the self-dual and the gauge field we are able to consistently neglect awkward extra terms generated via master action and establish quantum duality up to cubic terms in the coupling constant. The duality holds for the partition function and some correlation functions. The absence of ghosts imposes restrictions on the coupling with the scalar fields.

Static potential in scalar QED$_3$ with non-minimal coupling
Authors:

Abstract:
Here we compute the static potential in scalar $QED_3$ at leading order in $1/N_f$. We show that the addition of a non-minimal coupling of Pauli-type ($\eps j^μ\partial^νA^α$), although it breaks parity, it does not change the analytic structure of the photon propagator and consequently the static potential remains logarithmic (confining) at large distances. The non-minimal coupling modifies the…

The non-minimal coupling modifies the potential, however, at small charge separations giving rise to a repulsive force of short range between opposite sign charges, which is relevant for the existence of bound states. This effect is in agreement with a previous calculation based on M$\ddot{o}$ller scattering, but differently from such calculation we show here that the repulsion appears independently of the presence of a tree level Chern-Simons term which rather affects the large distance behavior of the potential turning it into constant.
