Locality of bulk operators in AdS imposes stringent constraints on their description in terms of the boundary CFT. These constraints are encoded as sum rules on the bulk-to-boundary expansion coefficients. In this paper, we construct families of sum rules that are (i) complete and (ii) `dual' to sparse CFT spectra. The sum rules trivialise the reconstruction of bulk operators in strongly interacting QFTs in AdS space and allow us to write down explicit, exact, interacting solutions to the locality problem. Technically, we characterise `completeness' of a set of sum rules by constructing Schauder bases for a certain space of real-analytic functions. In turn, this allows us to prove a Paley-Weiner type theorem characterising the space of sum rules. Remarkably, with control over this space, it is possible to write down closed-form `designer sum rules', dual to a chosen spectrum of CFT operators meeting certain criteria. We discuss the consequences of our results for both analytic and numerical bootstrap applications.

We introduce manifestly crossing-symmetric expansions for arbitrary systems of 1D CFT correlators. These expansions are given in terms of certain Polyakov blocks which we define and show how to compute efficiently. Equality of OPE and Polyakov block expansions leads to sets of sum rules that any mixed correlator system must satisfy. The sum rules are diagonalized by correlators in tensor product theories of generalized free fields. We show that it is possible to do a change of a basis that diagonalizes instead mixed correlator systems involving elementary and composite operators in a single field theory. As an example, we find the first non-trivial examples of optimal bounds, saturated by the mixed correlator system $φ,φ^2$ in the theory of a single generalized free field.

The problem of constructing local bulk observables from boundary CFT data is of paramount importance in holography. In this work, we begin addressing this question from a modern bootstrap perspective. Our main tool is the boundary operator expansion (BOE), which holds for any QFT in AdS. Following Kabat and Lifschytz, we argue that the BOE is strongly constrained by demanding locality of correlators involving bulk fields. Focusing on 'AdS form factors' of one bulk and two boundary insertions, we reformulate these locality constraints as a complete set of sum rules on the BOE data. We show that these sum rules lead to a manifestly local representation of form factors in terms of 'local blocks'. The sum rules are valid non-perturbatively, but are especially well-adapted for perturbative computations in AdS where they allow us to bootstrap the BOE data in a systematic fashion. Finally, in the flat space limit, we show that the AdS form factor reduces to an ordinary QFT form factor. We provide a phase shift formula for it in terms of the BOE and CFT data. In two dimensions, this formula makes manifest Watson's equations for integrable form factors under certain extremality assumptions on the CFT. We discuss the eventual modifications of our formalism to account for dressed operators in AdS.

We study families of one-dimensional CFTs relevant for describing gapped QFTs in AdS$_2$. Using the Polyakov bootstrap as our main tool, we explain how S-matrices emerge from the flat space limit of CFT correlators. In this limit we prove that the CFT OPE density matches that of a generalized free field, and that this implies unitarity of the S-matrix. We establish a CFT dispersion formula for the S-matrix, proving its analyticity except for singularities on the real axis which we characterize in terms of the CFT data. In particular positivity of the OPE establishes that any such S-matrix must satisfy extended unitarity conditions. We also carefully prove that for physical kinematics the S-matrix may be more directly described by a phase shift formula. Our results crucially depend on the assumption of a certain gap in the spectrum of operators. We bootstrap perturbative AdS bubble, triangle and box diagrams and find that the presence of anomalous thresholds in S-matrices are precisely signaled by an unbounded OPE arising from violating this assumption. Finally we clarify the relation between unitarity saturating S-matrices and extremal CFTs, establish a mapping between the dual S-matrix and CFT bootstraps, and discuss how our results help understand UV completeness or lack thereof for specific S-matrices.

We consider the problem of bounding CFT correlators on the Euclidean section. By reformulating the question as an optimization problem, we construct functionals numerically which determine upper and lower bounds on correlators under several circumstances. A useful outcome of our analysis is that the gap maximization bootstrap problem can be reproduced by a numerically easier optimization problem. We find that the 3d Ising spin correlator takes the minimal possible allowed values on the Euclidean section. Turning to the maximization problem we find that for d > 2 there are gap-independent maximal bounds on CFT correlators. Under certain conditions we show that the maximizing correlator is given by the generalized free boson for general Euclidean kinematics. In our explorations we also uncover an intriguing 3d CFT which saturates gap, OPE maximization and correlator value bounds. Finally we comment on the relation between our functionals and the Polyakov bootstrap.

The formulae are equivalent to the sum rules implied by what we call master functionals, which are analytic extremal functionals which act on the crossing equation. The dispersion relations provide an equivalent formulation of the constraints of the Polyakov bootstrap and hence of crossing symmetry on the line. The built in positivity properties imply simple and exact lower and upper bounds on the values of general CFT correlators on the Euclidean section, which are saturated by generalized free fields. Besides bounds on correlators, we apply this technology to determine new universal constraints on the Regge limit of arbitrary CFTs and obtain very simple and accurate representations of the 3d Ising spin correlator.

Quantum field theories in AdS generate conformal correlation functions on the boundary, and in the limit where AdS is nearly flat one should be able to extract an S-matrix from such correlators. We discuss a particularly simple position-space procedure to do so. It features a direct map from boundary positions to (on-shell) momenta and thereby relates cross ratios to Mandelstam invariants. This recipe succeeds in several examples, includes the momentum-conserving delta functions, and can be shown to imply the two proposals in arXiv:1607.06109 based on Mellin space and on the OPE data. Interestingly the procedure does not always work: the Landau singularities of a Feynman diagram are shown to be part of larger regions, to be called `bad regions', where the flat-space limit of the Witten diagram diverges. To capture these divergences we introduce the notion of Landau diagrams in AdS. As in flat space, these describe on-shell particles propagating over large distances in a complexified space, with a form of momentum conservation holding at each bulk vertex. As an application we recover the anomalous threshold of the four-point triangle diagram at the boundary of a bad region.

We introduce analytic functionals which act on the crossing equation for CFTs in arbitrary spacetime dimension. The functionals fully probe the constraints of crossing symmetry on the first sheet, and are in particular sensitive to the OPE, (double) lightcone and Regge limits. Compatibility with the crossing equation imposes constraints on the functional kernels which we study in detail. We then introduce two simple classes of functionals. The first class has a simple action on generalized free fields and their deformations and can be used to bootstrap AdS contact interactions in general dimension. The second class is obtained by tensoring holomorphic and antiholomorphic copies of $d=1$ functionals which have been considered recently. They are dual to simple solutions to crossing in $d=2$ which include the energy correlator of the Ising model. We show how these functionals lead to optimal bounds on the OPE density of $d=2$ CFTs and argue that they provide an equivalent rewriting of the $d=2$ crossing equation which is better suited for numeric computations than current approaches.

The dual basis is a set of linear functionals which act on the crossing equation to give a set of sum rules on the boundary CFT data: the functional bootstrap equations. We show these equations are essentially equivalent to a Polyakov-type approach to the bootstrap of BCFTs, and show how to fix the so-called contact term ambiguity in that context. Finally, the functional bootstrap equations diagonalize perturbation theory around generalized free fields, which we use to recover the Wilson-Fisher BCFT data in the $ε$-expansion to order $ε^2$.

We clarify the relationships between different approaches to the conformal bootstrap. A central role is played by the so-called extremal functionals. They are linear functionals acting on the crossing equation which are directly responsible for the optimal bounds of the numerical bootstrap. We explain in detail that the extremal functionals probe the Regge limit. We construct two complete sets of extremal functionals for the crossing equation specialized to $z=\bar{z}$, associated to the generalized free boson and fermion theories. These functionals lead to non-perturbative sum rules on the CFT data which automatically incorporate Regge boundedness of physical correlators. The sum rules imply universal properties of the OPE at large $Δ$ in every unitary solution of SL(2) crossing. In particular, we prove an upper and lower bound on a weighted sum of OPE coefficients present between consecutive generalized free field dimensions. The lower bound implies the $φ\timesφ$ OPE must contain at least one primary in the interval $[2Δ_φ+2n,2Δ_φ+2n+4]$ for all sufficiently large integer $n$. The functionals directly compute the OPE decomposition of crossing-symmetrized Witten exchange diagrams in $AdS_2$. Therefore, they provide a derivation of the Polyakov bootstrap for SL(2), in particular fixing the so-called contact-term ambiguity. We also use the resulting sum rules to bootstrap several Witten diagrams in $AdS_2$ up to two loops.

We study a general class of functionals providing an analytic handle on the conformal bootstrap equations in one dimension. We explicitly identify the extremal functionals, corresponding to theories saturating conformal bootstrap bounds, in two regimes. The first corresponds to functionals that annihilate the generalized free fermion spectrum. In this case, we analytically find both OPE and gap maximization functionals proving the extremality of the generalized free fermion solution to crossing. Secondly, we consider a scaling limit where all conformal dimensions become large, equivalent to the large $AdS$ radius limit of gapped theories in $AdS_2$. In this regime we demonstrate analytically that optimal bounds on OPE coefficients lead to extremal solutions to crossing arising from integrable field theories placed in large $AdS_2$. In the process, we uncover a close connection between asymptotic extremal functionals and S-matrices of integrable field theories in flat space and explain how 2D S-matrix bootstrap results can be derived from the 1D conformal bootstrap equations. These points illustrate that our formalism is capable of capturing non-trivial solutions of CFT crossing.

These theories have a SL(2) algebra of local bosonic constraints which can be supplemented by additional fermionic constraints depending on the matter content of the theory. By computing the BRST charge associated with gauge fixing these constraints, we find anomalies which vanish for specific target space dimensions. These critical dimensions coincide precisely with those for which (biadjoint) cubic scalar theory, gauge theory and gravity are classically conformally invariant. Furthermore, the BRST cohomology of each theory contains vertex operators for the full conformal multiplets of single field insertions in each of these space-time CFTs. We give a prescription for the computation of three-point functions, and compare our formalism with the scattering equations approach to on-shell amplitudes.

The extremal functional method determines approximate solutions to the constraints of crossing symmetry, which saturate bounds on the space of unitary CFTs. We show that such solutions are characterized by extremality conditions, which may be used to flow continuously along the boundaries of parameter space. Along the flow there is generically no further need for optimization, which dramatically reduces computational requirements, bringing calculations from the realm of computing clusters to laptops. Conceptually, extremality sheds light on possible ways to bootstrap without positivity, extending the method to non-unitary theories, and implies that theories saturating bounds, and especially those sitting at kinks, have unusually sparse spectra. We discuss several applications, including the first high-precision bootstrap of a non-unitary CFT.

We consider the question of conformal invariance of the long-range Ising model at the critical point. The continuum description is given in terms of a nonlocal field theory, and the absence of a stress tensor invalidates all of the standard arguments for the enhancement of scale invariance to conformal invariance. We however show that several correlation functions, computed to second order in the epsilon expansion, are nontrivially consistent with conformal invariance. We proceed to give a proof of conformal invariance to all orders in the epsilon expansion, based on the description of the long-range Ising model as a defect theory in an auxiliary higher-dimensional space. We introduce {\tt JuliBootS}, a package for numerical conformal bootstrap computations coded in {\tt Julia}. The centre-piece of {\tt JuliBootS} is an implementation of Dantzig's simplex method capable of handling arbitrary precision linear programming problems with continuous search spaces. Current supported features include conformal dimension bounds, OPE bounds, and bootstrap with or without global symmetries. The code is trivially parallelizable on one or multiple machines. We exemplify usage extensively with several real-world applications. In passing we give a pedagogical introduction to the numerical bootstrap methods.

We consider the conformal bootstrap for spacetime dimension $1<d<2$. We determine bounds on operator dimensions and compare our results with various theoretical and numerical models, in particular with resummed $ε$-expansion and Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model on fractal lattices. The bounds clearly rule out that these models correspond to unitary conformal field theories. We also clarify the $d\to 1$ limit of the conformal bootstrap, showing that bounds can be - and indeed are - discontinuous in this limit. This discontinuity implies that for small $ε=d-1$ the expected critical exponents for the Ising model are disallowed, and in particular those of the $d-1$ expansion. Altogether these results strongly suggest that the Ising model universality class cannot be described by a unitary CFT below $d=2$. We argue this also from a bootstrap perspective, by showing that the $2\leq d<4$ Ising "kink" splits into two features which grow apart below $d=2$.

For the top-cell graph of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$, this cluster algebra is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We prove that the same statement holds for plabic graphs describing lower dimensional cells. In this way we obtain a map from the positroid strata onto cluster subalgebras of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$. We explore some of the consequences of this map for tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory.

We use the conformal bootstrap to perform a precision study of the operator spectrum of the critical 3d Ising model. We conjecture that the 3d Ising spectrum minimizes the central charge c in the space of unitary solutions to crossing symmetry. Because extremal solutions to crossing symmetry are uniquely determined, we are able to precisely reconstruct the first several Z2-even operator dimensions and their OPE coefficients. We observe that a sharp transition in the operator spectrum occurs at the 3d Ising dimension Delta_sigma=0.518154(15), and find strong numerical evidence that operators decouple from the spectrum as one approaches the 3d Ising point. We compare this behavior to the analogous situation in 2d, where the disappearance of operators can be understood in terms of degenerate Virasoro representations.

Using Mellin amplitudes, a large class of higher loop integrals can be written as simple integro-differential operators on star integrals: one-loop $n$-gon integrals in $n$ dimensions. These are known to be given by volumes of hyperbolic simplices. We explicitly compute the five-dimensional pentagon integral in full generality using Schläfli's formula. Then, as a first step to understanding higher loops, we use spline technology to construct explicitly the $6d$ hexagon and $8d$ octagon integrals in two-dimensional kinematics. The fully massive hexagon and octagon integrals are then related to the double box and triple box integrals respectively. We comment on the classes of functions needed to express these integrals in general kinematics, involving elliptic functions and beyond.

The existence of a positive linear functional acting on the space of (differences between) conformal blocks has been shown to rule out regions in the parameter space of conformal field theories (CFTs). We argue that at the boundary of the allowed region the extremal functional contains, in principle, enough information to determine the dimensions and OPE coefficients of an infinite number of operators appearing in the correlator under analysis. Based on this idea we develop the Extremal Functional Method (EFM), a numerical procedure for deriving the spectrum and OPE coefficients of CFTs lying on the boundary (of solution space). We test the EFM by using it to rederive the low lying spectrum and OPE coefficients of the 2d Ising model based solely on the dimension of a single scalar quasi-primary -- no Virasoro algebra required. Our work serves as a benchmark for applications to more interesting, less known CFTs in the near future.

We uncover an unexpected connection between the physics of loop integrals and the mathematics of spline functions. One loop integrands are Laplace transforms of splines. This clarifies the geometry of the associated loop integrals, since a $n$-node spline has support on an $n$-vertex polyhedral cone. One-loop integrals are integrals of splines on a hyperbolic slice of the cone, yielding polytopes in $AdS$ space. Splines thus give a geometrical counterpart to the rational function identities at the level of the integrand. Spline technology also allows for a clear, simple, algebraic decomposition of higher point loop integrals in lower dimensional kinematics in terms of lower point integrals - e.g. an hexagon integral in 2d kinematics can be written as a sum of scalar boxes. Higher loops can also be understood directly in terms of splines - they map onto spline convolutions, leading to an intriguing representation in terms of hyperbolic simplices integrated over other hyperbolic simplices. We finish with speculations on the interpretation of one-loop integrals as partition functions, inspired by the use of splines in counting points in polytopes.

Motivated by recent work on the utility of Mellin space for representing conformal correlators in $AdS$/CFT, we study its suitability for representing dual conformal integrals of the type which appear in perturbative scattering amplitudes in super-Yang-Mills theory. We discuss Feynman-like rules for writing Mellin amplitudes for a large class of integrals in any dimension, and find explicit representations for several familiar toy integrals. However we show that the power of Mellin space is that it provides simple representations even for fully massive integrals, which except for the single case of the 4-mass box have not yet been computed by any available technology. Mellin space is also useful for exhibiting differential relations between various multi-loop integrals, and we show that certain higher-loop integrals may be written as integral operators acting on the fully massive scalar $n$-gon in $n$ dimensions, whose Mellin amplitude is exactly 1. Our chief example is a very simple formula expressing the 6-mass double box as a single integral of the 6-mass scalar hexagon in 6 dimensions.

We construct a class of theories which extend New Massive Gravity to higher orders in curvature in any dimension. The lagrangians arise as limits of a new class of bimetric theories of Lovelock gravity, which are unitary theories free from the Boulware-Deser ghost. These Lovelock bigravity models represent the most general non-chiral ghost-free theories of an interacting massless and massive spin-two field in any dimension. The scaling limit is taken in such a way that unitarity is explicitly broken, but the Boulware-Deser ghost remains absent. This automatically implies the existence of a holographic $c$-theorem for these theories. We also show that the Born-Infeld extension of New Massive Gravity falls into our class of models demonstrating that this theory is also free of the Boulware-Deser ghost. These results extend existing connections between New Massive Gravity, bigravity theories, Galileon theories and holographic $c$-theorems.

We also show how to use the same combination of Mellin transform and embedding formalism for amplitudes involving fields with spin. The complicated tensor structures which usually arise can be written as certain operators acting as projectors on much simpler index structures - essentially the same ones appearing in a flat space amplitude. We construct a $\mathcal N$-function for Lovelock theories of gravity, which yields a holographic $c$-function in domain-wall backgrounds, and seemingly generalizes the concept for black hole geometries. A flow equation equates the monotonicity properties of $\mathcal N$ with the gravitational field, which has opposite signs in the domain-wall and black hole backgrounds, due to the presence of negative/positive energy in the former/latter, and accordingly $\mathcal N$ monotonically decreases/increases from the UV to the IR. On $AdS$ spaces the $\mathcal N$-function is related to the Euler anomaly, and at a black hole horizon it is generically proportional to the entropy. For planar black holes, $\mathcal N$ diverges at the horizon, which we interpret as an order $N^2$ increase in the number of effective degrees of freedom. We show how $\mathcal N$ can be written as the ratio of the Wald entropy to an effective phase space volume, and using the flow equation relate this to Verlinde's notion of gravity as an entropic force. From the effective phase space we can obtain an expression for the dual field theory momentum cut-off, matching a previous proposal in the literature by Polchinski and Heemskerk. Finally, we propose that the area in Planck units counts states, not degrees of freedom, and identify it also as a phase space volume. Written in terms of the proper radial distance $β$, it takes the suggestive form of a canonical partition function at inverse temperature $β$, leading to a "mean energy" which is simply the extrinsic curvature of the surface. Using this we relate this definition of holographic phase space with the effective phase space appearing in the $\mathcal N$-function.

We consider Lovelock theories of gravity in the context of AdS/CFT. We show that, for these theories, causality violation on a black hole background can occur well in the interior of the geometry, thus posing more stringent constraints than were previously found in the literature. Also, we find that instabilities of the geometry can appear for certain parameter values at any point in the geometry, as well in the bulk as close to the horizon. These new sources of causality violation and instability should be related to CFT features that do not depend on the UV behavior. They solve a puzzle found previously concerning unphysical negative values for the shear viscosity that are not ruled out solely by causality restrictions. We find that, contrary to previous expectations, causality violation is not always related to positivity of energy. Furthermore, we compute the bound for the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of supersymmetric conformal field theories from d=4 till d=10 - i.e., up to quartic Lovelock theory -, and find that it behaves smoothly as a function of d. We propose an approximate formula that nicely fits these values and has a nice asymptotic behavior when d goes to infinity for any Lovelock gravity. We discuss in some detail the latter limit. We finally argue that it is possible to obtain increasingly lower values for the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio by the inclusion of more Lovelock terms.

Demanding the existence of a holographic c-theorem we show how to fix the coefficients in the action for an arbitrarily high order, recovering the new massive gravity lagrangian at quadratic order. We calculate the central charge $c$ and show that using Cardy's formula it matches the entropy of black hole solutions, which we construct. We also consider fluctuations about an AdS background, and find that it is possible to obtain two derivative equations by imposing a single constraint, thereby lifting the pathologic massive modes of new massive gravity. If we do not impose this, there is a set of ghosty massive modes propagating in the bulk. However, at $c=0$ these become massless and it is expected that these theories encode the dynamics of the spin two sector of strongly coupled logarithmic CFT's.

We show how to apply our methods to systems at zero temperature but finite chemical potential. Our results imply that such theories satisfy $η/s=1/4π$ universally in the Einstein-Maxwell sector. Likewise, the zero frequency limit of the real part of the conductivity for such systems is shown to be universally zero, and we conjecture that higher derivative corrections in this sector do not modify this result to all orders in perturbation theory.

Along the way we show a new method of computing Schouten identities. With this result we clarify under which conditions one may neglect the five-form higher derivative terms. We comment on corrections to the thermodynamics of charged black holes.
