Error estimates for the discretization of bilinear control problems governed by semilinear elliptic PDEs
Abstract: This paper studies an optimal control problem governed by a semilinear elliptic equation, in which the control acts in a multiplicative or bilinear way as the reaction coefficient of the equation. We focus on the numerical discretization of the problem. The discretization is carried out by using the finite element method, with piecewise constant functions for the control and continuous piecewise l… ▽ More

Semismooth Newton Method for Boundary Bilinear Control
Abstract: We study a control-constrained optimal control problem governed by a semilinear elliptic equation. The control acts in a bilinear way on the boundary, and can be interpreted as a heat transfer coefficient. A detailed study of the state equation is performed and differentiability properties of the control-to-state mapping are shown. First and second order optimality conditions are derived. Our main… ▽ More

New second order sufficient optimality conditions for state constrained parabolic control problems
Abstract: We study a control problem governed by a semilinear parabolic equation with pointwise control and state constraints imposed at every point of the space-time cylinder. We obtain second order sufficient optimality conditions for local optimality in the sense of $L^2(Q)$. Our results are valid for spatial domains of dimension less than or equal to three.

Bilinear control of semilinear elliptic PDEs: Convergence of a semismooth Newton method
Abstract: In this paper, we carry out the analysis of the semismooth Newton method for bilinear control problems related to semilinear elliptic PDEs. We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity for the solution of the state equation, as well as differentiability properties of the control to state mapping. Then, first and second order optimality conditions are obtained. Finally, we prove the superlinear co… ▽ More

New assumptions for stability analysis in elliptic optimal control problems
Abstract: This paper is dedicated to the stability analysis of the optimal solutions of a control problem associated with a semilinear elliptic equation. The linear differential operator of the equation is neither monotone nor coercive due to the presence of a convection term. The control appears only linearly, or even it can not appear in an explicit form in the objective functional. Under new assumptions,… ▽ More

A Note on Existence of Solutions to Control Problems of Semilinear Partial Differential Equations
Abstract: In this paper, we study optimal control problems of semilinear elliptic and parabolic equations. A tracking cost functional, quadratic in the control and state variables, is considered. No control constraints are imposed. We prove that the corresponding state equations are well-posed for controls in $L^2$. However, it is well-known that in the $L^2$ framework the mappings involved in the control p… ▽ More

Infinite Horizon Optimal Control Problems for a Class of Semilinear Parabolic Equations
Abstract: Infinite horizon open loop optimal control problems for semilinear parabolic equations are investigated. The controls are subject to a cost-functional which promotes sparsity in time. The focus is put on deriving first order optimality conditions. This is achieved without relying on a well-defined control-to-state mapping in a neighborhood of minimizers. The technique of proof is based on the appr… ▽ More

Optimal Control of Semilinear Parabolic Equations with Non-smooth Pointwise-Integral Control Constraints in Time-Space
Abstract: This work concentrates on a class of optimal control problems for semilinear parabolic equations subject to control constraint of the form $\|u(t)\|_{L^1(Ω)} \le γ$ for $t \in (0,T)$. This limits the total control that can be applied to the system at any instant of time. The $L^1$-norm of the constraint leads to sparsity of the control in space, for the time instants when the constraint is active.… ▽ More

Optimal Control of the 2D Evolutionary Navier-Stokes Equations with Measure Valued Controls
Abstract: In this paper, we consider an optimal control problem for the two-dimensional evolutionary Navier-Stokes system. Looking for sparsity, we take controls as functions of time taking values in a space of Borel measures. The cost functional does not involve directly the control but we assume some constraints on them. We prove the well-posedness of the control problem and derive necessary and sufficien… ▽ More

Well-Posedness of Evolutionary Navier-Stokes Equations with Forces of Low Regularity on Two-Dimensional Domains
Abstract: Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation in dimension two with forces in the space $L^q( (0,T); \mathbf{W}^{-1,p}(Ω))$ for $p$ and $q$ in appropriate parameter ranges are proven. The case of spatially measured-valued inhomogeneities is included. For the associated Stokes equation the well-posedness results are verified in arbitrary dimensions with $1 < p, q < \infty$ arb… ▽ More

Analysis of Optimal Control Problems with an $L^0$ Term in the Cost Functional
Abstract: In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems subject to a semilinear elliptic partial differential equations. The cost functional contains a term that measures the size of the support of the control, which is the so-called $L^0$-norm. We provide necessary and sufficient optimality conditions of second-order. The sufficient second-order condition is obtained by analyzing a partially conve… ▽ More

Analysis of control problems of nonmontone semilinear elliptic equations
Abstract: In this paper we study optimal control problems governed by a semilinear elliptic equation. The equation is nonmonotone due to the presence of a convection term, despite the monotonocity of the nonlinear term. The resulting operator is neither monotone nor coervive. Critical cones for sufficient second order conditions in PDE constrained optimization
Abstract: In this paper, we analyze optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations. Box constraints for the controls are imposed and the cost functional involves the state and possibly a sparsity-promoting term, but not a Tikhonov regularization term. These time delays and corresponding weights are to be optimized such that the associated solution of the delay equation is the best approximation of a desired state function. The differentiability of the mapping is proved that associates the solution of the delay equation to the vector of weights… ▽ More

Existence of optimal controls, necessary and suffcient optimality conditions of first and second order are analysed. Special attention is paid on the effect of the choice of th… ▽ More

Second-Order Analysis and Numerical Approximation for Bang-Bang Bilinear Control Problems
Abstract: We consider bilinear optimal control problems, whose objective functionals do not depend on the controls. Hence, bang-bang solutions will appear. We investigate sufficient second-order conditions for bang-bang controls, which guarantee local quadratic growth of the objective functional in $L^1$. In addition, we prove that for controls that are not bang-bang, no such growth can be expected. Finally… ▽ More
