Logical reduction of relations: from relational databases to Peirce's reduction thesis
Abstract: We study logical reduction (factorization) of relations into relations of lower arity by Boolean or relative products that come from applying conjunctions and existential quantifiers to predicates, i.e. by primitive positive formulas of predicate calculus. Our algebraic framework unifies natural joins and data dependencies of database theory and relational algebra of clone theory with the bond alg… ▽ More

Is Peirce's reduction thesis gerrymandered?
Abstract: We argue that traditional formulations of the reduction thesis that tie it to privileged relational operations do not suffice for Peirce's justification of the categories, and invite the charge of gerrymandering to make it come out as true. We then develop a more robust invariant formulation of the thesis by explicating the use of triads in any relational operations, which is immune to that charge… ▽ More

Can the quadratrix truly square the circle?
Abstract: The quadratrix received its name from the circle quadrature, squaring the circle, but it only solves it if completed by taking a limit, as pointed out already in antiquity. We ask if it can square the circle without limits and restrict its use accordingly, to converting ratios of angles and segments into each other. The problem is then translated into algebra by analogy to straightedge and compass… ▽ More

Linear recurrent cryptography: golden-like cryptography for higher order linear recurrences
Abstract: We develop matrix cryptography based on linear recurrent sequences of any order that allows securing encryption against brute force and chosen plaintext attacks. In particular, we solve the problem of generalizing error detection and correction algorithms of golden cryptography previously known only for recurrences of a special form. They are based on proving the checking relations (inequalities s… ▽ More

Wittgenstein, Peirce, and paradoxes of mathematical proof
Abstract: Wittgenstein's paradoxical theses that unproved propositions are meaningless, proofs form new concepts and rules, and contradictions are of limited concern, led to a variety of interpretations, most of them centered on the rule-following skepticism. We argue that his intuitions rather reflect resistance to treating meaning as fixed content, and are better understood in the light of C.S. Peirce's d… ▽ More

Swinging a playground swing: torque controls for inducing sustained oscillations
Abstract: Models of a playground swing have been studied since the 1960s. However, in most of them, the position of the swinger is controlled directly. This simplifies the problem but hides the mechanics of torques applied to keep the swing moving in a regular pattern. This article studies these mechanics. Two models of a swing with torques as controls that we consider are identical to popular models of mod… ▽ More

Harmonic Oscillators of Mathematical Biology: Many Faces of a Predator-Prey Model
Abstract: We show that a number of models in virus dynamics, epidemiology and plant biology can be presented as ``damped" versions of the Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model, by analogy to the damped harmonic oscillator. The analogy deepens with the use of Lyapunov functions, which allow us to characterize their dynamics and even make some estimates.

Caustics of light rays and Euler's angle of inclination
Abstract: Euler used intrinsic equations expressing the radius of curvature as a function of the angle of inclination to find curves similar to their evolutes. We interpret the evolute of a plane curve optically, as the caustic (envelope) of light rays normal to it, and study the Euler's problem for general caustics. The resulting curves are characterized when the rays are at a constant angle to the curve,… ▽ More

Abstract: A horn angle between a circle and its tangent is considered in Euclid's Elements, and Euclid remarks that it is smaller than any acute rectilinear angle. Homotopy classification of maps into homogeneous spaces
Abstract: We give an alternative to Postnikov's homotopy classification of maps from 3-dimensional CW-complexes to homogeneous spaces G/H of Lie groups. It describes homotopy classes in terms of lifts to the group G and is suitable for extending the notion of homotopy to Sobolev maps. This is required for applications to variational problems of mathematical physics.
