In this paper, we introduce new classes of infinite and combinatorially periodic tensegrities, derived from algebraic multidimensional continued fractions in the sense of F. Klein. We describe the stress coefficients on edges through integer invariants of these continued fractions, as initiated by V.I. Arnold, thereby creating a novel connection between geometric rigidity theory and the geometry of continued fractions. Remarkably, the new classes of tensegrities possess rational self-stress coefficients. To establish the self-stressability of the frameworks, we present a projective version of the classical Maxwell-Cremona lifting principle, a result of independent interest.

This article considers the problem of 3-dimensional genome reconstruction for single-cell data, and the uniqueness of such reconstructions in the setting of haploid organisms. We consider multiple graph models as representations of this problem, and use techniques from graph rigidity theory to determine identifiability. Biologically, our models come from Hi-C data, microscopy data, and combinations thereof. Mathematically, we use unit ball and sphere packing models, as well as models consisting of distance and inequality constraints. In each setting, we describe and/or derive new results on realisability and uniqueness. We then propose a 3D reconstruction method based on semidefinite programming and apply it to synthetic and real data sets using our models.

We describe the notion of stability of coherent systems as a framework to deal with redundancy. We define stable coherent systems and show how this notion can help the design of reliable systems. Loop invariants are properties of a program loop that hold before and after each iteration of the loop. They are often employed to verify programs and ensure that algorithms consistently produce correct results during execution. Consequently, the generation of invariants becomes a crucial task for loops. We specifically focus on polynomial loops, where both the loop conditions and assignments within the loop are expressed as polynomials. Although computing polynomial invariants for general loops is undecidable, efficient algorithms have been developed for certain classes of loops. For instance, when all assignments within a while loop involve linear polynomials, the loop becomes solvable. In this work, we study the more general case where the polynomials exhibit arbitrary degrees.
Applying tools from algebraic geometry, we present two algorithms designed to generate all polynomial invariants for a while loop, up to a specified degree. These algorithms differ based on whether the initial values of the loop variables are given or treated as parameters. Furthermore, we introduce various methods to address cases where the algebraic problem exceeds the computational capabilities of our methods. In such instances, we identify alternative approaches to generate specific polynomial invariants.

We study a family of monomial ideals, called block diagonal matching field ideals, which arise as monomial Gröbner degenerations of determinantal ideals. Our focus is on the minimal free resolutions of these ideals and all of their powers. Initially, we establish their linear quotient property and compute their Betti numbers, illustrating that their minimal free resolution is supported on a regular CW complex. Our proof relies on the results of Herzog and Takayama, demonstrating that ideals with a linear quotient property have a minimal free resolution, and on the construction by Dochtermann and Mohammadi of cellular realizations of these resolutions. We begin by proving the linear quotient property for each power of such an ideal. Subsequently, we show that their corresponding decomposition map is regular, resulting in a minimal cellular resolution. Finally, we demonstrate that distinct decomposition maps lead to different cellular complexes with the same face numbers.

The goal of this article is twofold: firstly, to prove that the solution of such problem can be expressed as a convex combination of certain interpolants when the solution is sought in any finite-dimensional vector space; secondly, to provide a general strategy to iteratively update the weights according to the approximation error and apply it to the spline fitting problem. In the experiments, we provide numerical examples for the case of polynomials and splines spaces. Positroids are a family of matroids introduced by Postnikov in the study of non-negative Grassmannians. Postnikov identified several combinatorial objects in bijections with positroids, among which are bounded affine permutations. On the other hand, the notion of essential sets, introduced for permutations by Fulton, was used by Knutson in the study of the special family of interval rank positroids. We generalize Fulton's essential sets to bounded affine permutations. The bijection of the latter with positroids, allows study of the relationship between them. From the point of view of positroids, essential sets are maximally dependent cyclic interval. We define connected essential sets and prove that they give a facet description of the positroid polytope, as well as equations defining the positroid variety. We define a subset of essential sets, called core, which contains minimal rank conditions to uniquely recover a positroid. We provide an algorithm to retrieve the positroid satisfying the rank conditions in the core or any compatible rank condition on cyclic intervals.

Our focus is on their realisation spaces, where we introduce the concepts of liftable and quasi-liftable configurations, exploring cases in which an $n$-tuple of collinear points can be lifted to a non-degenerate realisation of a point-line configuration. We show that forest configurations are liftable and characterise the realisation space of liftable configurations as the solution set of certain linear systems of equations. Moreover, we study the Zariski closure of the realisation spaces of liftable and quasi-liftable configurations, known as matroid varieties, and establish their irreducibility. Additionally, we compute an irreducible decomposition for their corresponding circuit varieties. Applying these liftability properties, we present a procedure generate some of the defining equations of the associated matroid varieties. As corollaries, we provide a geometric representation for the defining equations of two specific examples: the quadrilateral set and the $3\times4$ grid. While the polynomials for the latter were previously computed using specialised algorithms tailored for this configuration, the geometric interpretation of these generators was missing. In 1864, J. C. Maxwell introduced a link between self-stressed frameworks in the plane and piecewise linear liftings to 3-space. This connection has found numerous applications in areas such as discrete geometry, control theory and structural engineering. While there are some generalisations of this theory to liftings of $d$-complexes in $d$-space, extensions for liftings of frameworks in $d$-space for $d\geq 3$ have been missing. In this paper, we introduce and study differential liftings on general graphs using differential forms associated with the elements of the homotopy groups of the complements to the frameworks. Such liftings play the role of integrands for the classical notion of liftings for planar frameworks. We show that these differential liftings have a natural extension to self-stressed frameworks in higher dimensions. As a result we generalise the notion of classical liftings to both graphs and multidimensional $k$-complexes in $d$-space ($k=2,\ldots, d$). Finally we discuss a natural representation of generalised liftings as real-valued functions on Grassmannians.

In this note we study the uniqueness problem for collections of pennies and marbles. More generally, consider a collection of unit $d$-spheres that may touch but not overlap. Given the existence of such a collection, one may analyse the contact graph of the collection. In particular we consider the uniqueness of the collection arising from the contact graph. Using the language of graph rigidity theory, we prove a precise characterisation of uniqueness (global rigidity) in dimensions 2 and 3 when the contact graph is additionally chordal. We then illustrate a wide range of examples in these cases. That is, we illustrate collections of marbles and pennies that can be perturbed continuously (flexible), are locally unique (rigid) and are unique (globally rigid). We also contrast these examples with the usual generic setting of graph rigidity.

The identifiability problem arises naturally in a number of contexts in mathematics and computer science. Specific instances include local or global rigidity of graphs and unique completability of partially-filled tensors subject to rank conditions. The identifiability of points on secant varieties has also been a topic of much research in algebraic geometry. It is often formulated as the problem of identifying a set of points satisfying a given set of algebraic relations. A key question then is to prove sufficient conditions for relations to guarantee the identifiability of the points.
This paper proposes a new general framework for capturing the identifiability problem when a set of algebraic relations has a combinatorial structure and develops tools to analyse the impact of the underlying combinatorics on the local or global identifiability of points. Our framework is built on the language of graph rigidity, where the measurements are Euclidean distances between two points, but applicable in the generality of hypergraphs with arbitrary algebraic measurements. We establish necessary and sufficient (hyper)graph theoretical conditions for identifiability by exploiting techniques from graph rigidity theory and algebraic geometry of secant varieties. In particular our work analyses combinatorially the effect of non-generic projections of secant varieties.

This is a short report on the discussions of appearance of tensors in algebraic statistics and rigidity theory, during the semester ``AGATES: Algebraic Geometry with Applications to TEnsors and Secants". We briefly survey some of the existing results in the literature and further research directions. We first provide an overview of algebraic and geometric techniques in the study of conditional independence (CI) statistical models. We study different families of algebraic varieties arising in statistics. This includes the determinantal varieties related to CI statements with hidden random variables. Such statements correspond to determinantal conditions on the tensor of joint probabilities of events involving the observed random variables. We show how to compute the irreducible decompositions of the corresponding CI varieties, which leads to finding further conditional dependencies (or independencies) among the involved random variables. As an example, we show how these methods can be applied to extend the classical intersection axiom for CI statements. We then give a brief overview about secant varieties and their appearance in the study of mixture models. We focus on examples and briefly mention the connection to rigidity theory which will appear in the forthcoming paper \cite{rigidity}.

First we recall the notion of a cluster category. Then we move to the infinite setting and survey recent work on infinite cluster categories of types $\mathbb{A}$ and $\mathbb{D}$. We conclude with our contributions, two infinite families of infinite (weak) cluster categories of type $\mathbb{D}$. We first present a discrete, infinite version of Schiffler's combinatorial model of the punctured disk with marked points. We then produce each (weak) cluster category starting with representations of thread quivers, taking the derived category, and then taking the appropriate orbit category. We show that the combinatorics in the (weak) cluster categories match with the corresponding combinatorics of the punctured disk with countably-many marked points. We also state two conjectures concerning weak cluster structures inside our (weak) cluster categories.

In particular, positroids enumerate a CW decomposition of the totally non-negative Grassmannian. Furthermore, Postnikov has identified several families of combinatorial objects in bijections with positroids. We will provide yet another characterization of positroids for Gr$_{\geq 0}(2,n)$, the Grassmannians of lines, in terms of certain graphs. We use this characterization to compute the dimension and the boundary of positroid cells. This also leads to a combinatorial description of the intersection of positroid cells, that is easily computable. Our techniques rely on determining different ways to enlarge a given collection of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ to represent the dependent sets of a positroid, that is the dependencies among the columns of a matrix with non-negative maximal minors. We provide an explicit description of the polytopes associated with the resulting toric varieties in terms of matching field polytopes. As a corollary, we extend the tropical Bertini theorem of Maclagan and Yu to arbitrary characteristic, which removes the characteristic dependence from the d-connectivity result for tropical varieties from that paper.

This allows us to show that the support of the multidegree polynomial of each Cohen-Macaulay prime ideal, and in particular, that of each Schubert determinantal ideal is a discrete polymatroid.

Lattice Conditional Independence models are a class of models developed first for the Gaussian case in which a distributive lattice classifies all the conditional independence statements. The main result is that these models can equivalently be described via a transitive directed acyclic graph (TDAG) in which, as is normal for causal models, the conditional independence is in terms of conditioning on ancestors in the graph. We demonstrate that a parallel stream of research in algebra, the theory of Hibi ideals, not only maps directly to the LCI models but gives a vehicle to generalise the theory from the linear Gaussian case. Given a distributive lattice (i) each conditional independence statement is associated with a Hibi relation defined on the lattice, (ii) the directed graph is given by chains in the lattice which correspond to chains of conditional independence, (iii) the elimination ideal of product terms in the chains gives the Hibi ideal and (iv) the TDAG can be recovered from a special bipartite graph constructed via the Alexander dual of the Hibi ideal. It is briefly demonstrated that there are natural applications to statistical log-linear models, time series, and Shannon information flow.

This paper is devoted to the study of multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series. For an $\mathbb{N}^s$-graded algebra $A$, we define and study its volume function $F_A:\mathbb{N}_+^s\to \mathbb{R}$, which computes the asymptotics of the Hilbert function of $A$. We relate the volume function $F_A$ to the volume of the fibers of the global Newton-Okounkov body $Δ(A)$ of $A$. Unlike the classical case of standard multigraded algebras, the volume function $F_A$ is not a polynomial in general. However, in the case when the algebra $A$ has a decomposable grading, we show that the volume function $F_A$ is a polynomial with non-negative coefficients. We then define mixed multiplicities in this case and provide a full characterization for their positivity. Furthermore, we apply our results on multigraded algebras to multigraded linear series.
Our work recovers and unifies recent developments on mixed multiplicities. In particular, we recover results on the existence of mixed multiplicities for (not necessarily Noetherian) graded families of ideals and on the positivity of the multidegrees of multiprojective varieties.

We study varieties associated to hypergraphs from the point of view of projective geometry and matroid theory. We describe their decompositions into matroid varieties, which may be reducible and can have arbitrary singularities by the Mnëv--Sturmfels universality theorem. We focus on various families of hypergraph varieties for which we explicitly compute an irredundant irreducible decomposition. Our main findings in this direction are threefold: (1) we describe minimal matroids of such hypergraphs; (2) we prove that the varieties of these matroids are irreducible and their union is the hypergraph variety; and (3) we show that every such matroid is realizable over real numbers. As corollaries, we give conceptual decompositions of various, previously-studied, varieties associated with graphs, hypergraphs, and adjacent minors of generic matrices. In particular, our decomposition strategy gives immediate matroid interpretations of the irreducible components of multiple families of varieties associated to conditional independence (CI) models in statistical theory and unravels their symmetric structures which hugely simplifies the computations.

Richardson varieties are obtained as intersections of Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. We provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside Grassmannians by studying Gröbner degenerations of their corresponding ideals. These degenerations are parametrised by block diagonal matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels-Zelevinsky. We associate a weight vector to each block diagonal matching field and study its corresponding initial ideal. In particular, we characterise when such ideals are toric, hence providing a family of toric degenerations for Richardson varieties.
Given a Richardson variety $X_{w}^v$ and a weight vector ${\bf w}_\ell$ arising from a matching field, we consider two ideals: an ideal $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ obtained by restricting the initial of the Plücker ideal to a smaller polynomial ring, and a toric ideal defined as the kernel of a monomial map $φ_\ell|_w^v$. We first characterise the monomial-free ideals of form $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$. Then we construct a family of tableaux in bijection with semi-standard Young tableaux which leads to a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient ring. Finally, we prove that when $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ is monomial-free and the initial ideal in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$ is quadratically generated, then all three ideals in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$, $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ and ker$(φ_\ell|_w^v)$ coincide, and provide a toric degeneration of $X_w^v$.

We study the connection between probability distributions satisfying certain conditional independence (CI) constraints, and point and line arrangements in incidence geometry. To a family of CI statements, we associate a polynomial ideal whose algebraic invariants are encoded in a hypergraph. The primary decompositions of these ideals give a characterisation of the distributions satisfying the original CI statements. Classically, these ideals are generated by 2-minors of a matrix of variables, however, in the presence of hidden variables, they contain higher degree minors. This leads to the study of the structure of determinantal hypergraph ideals whose decompositions can be understood in terms of point and line configurations in the projective space.

Any totally positive $(k+m)\times n$ matrix induces a map $π_+$ from the positive Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}_+(k,n)$ to the Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}(k,k+m)$, whose image is the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$ and is endowed with a top-degree form called the canonical form ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$. This construction was introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka, where they showed that ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,4})$ encodes scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Moreover, the computation of ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ is reduced to finding the triangulations of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$. However, while triangulations of polytopes are fully captured by their secondary polytopes, the study of triangulations of objects beyond polytopes is still underdeveloped.
We initiate the geometric study of subdivisions of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$ and provide a concrete birational parametrization of fibers of $π: {\rm Gr}(k,n)\dashrightarrow {\rm Gr}(k,k+m)$. We then use this to explicitly describe a rational top-degree form $ω_{n,k,m}$ (with simple poles) on the fibers and compute ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ as a summation of certain residues of $ω_{n,k,m}$. As main application of our approach, we develop a well-structured notion of secondary amplituhedra for conjugate to polytopes, i.e. when $n-k-1=m$ (even). We show that, in this case, each fiber of $π$ is parametrized by a projective space and its volume form $ω_{n,k,m}$ has only poles on a hyperplane arrangement. Using such linear structures, for amplituhedra which are cyclic polytopes or conjugate to polytopes, we show that the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue computes ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ from $ω_{n,k,m}$. Finally, we propose a more general framework of fiber positive geometries and analyze new families of examples such as fiber polytopes and Grassmann polytopes.

Whenever a matching field gives rise to a toric degeneration, the associated polytope of the toric variety coincides with the matching field polytope. We study combinatorial mutations, which are analogues of cluster mutations for polytopes, of matching field polytopes and show that the property of giving rise to a toric degeneration of the Grassmannians, is preserved by mutation. Moreover the polytopes arising through mutations are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannians with respect to certain full-rank valuations. We produce a large family of such polytopes, extending the family of so-called block diagonal matching fields.

Let $V$ be the weighted projective variety defined by a weighted homogeneous ideal $J$ and $C$ a maximal cone in the Gröbner fan of $J$ with $m$ rays. We construct a flat family over $\mathbb A^m$ that assembles the Gröbner degenerations of $V$ associated with all faces of $C$. This is a multi-parameter generalization of the classical one-parameter Gröbner degeneration associated to a weight. We explain how our family can be constructed from Kaveh-Manon's recent work on the classification of toric flat families over toric varieties: it is the pull-back of a toric family defined by a Rees algebra with base $X_C$ (the toric variety associated to $C$) along the universal torsor $\mathbb A^m \to X_C$. We apply this construction to the Grassmannians ${\rm Gr}(2,\mathbb C^n)$ with their Plücker embeddings and the Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}\big(3,\mathbb C^6\big)$ with its cluster embedding. In each case, there exists a unique maximal Gröbner cone whose associated initial ideal is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the cluster complex. We show that the corresponding cluster algebra with universal coefficients arises as the algebra defining the flat family associated to this cone. Further, for ${\rm Gr}(2,\mathbb C^n)$ we show how Escobar-Harada's mutation of Newton-Okounkov bodies can be recovered as tropicalized cluster mutation.

Each edge appears in the network with its associated probability and the problem is to determine the probability of having at least one source-to-target path. This problem is known to be NP-hard.
We present a linear-time fixed-parameter algorithm based on a parameter called treewidth, which is a measure of tree-likeness of graphs. Network Reliability was already known to be solvable in polynomial time for bounded treewidth, but there were no concrete algorithms and the known methods used complicated structures and were not easy to implement. We provide a significantly simpler and more intuitive algorithm that is much easier to implement.
We also report on an implementation of our algorithm and establish the applicability of our approach by providing experimental results on the graphs of subway and transit systems of several major cities, such as London and Tokyo. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first exact algorithm for Network Reliability that can scale to handle real-world instances of the problem.

A graphical model encodes conditional independence relations via the Markov properties. For an undirected graph these conditional independence relations can be represented by a simple polytope known as the graph associahedron, which can be constructed as a Minkowski sum of standard simplices. There is an analogous polytope for conditional independence relations coming from a regular Gaussian model, and it can be defined using multiinformation or relative entropy. For directed acyclic graphical models and also for mixed graphical models containing undirected, directed and bidirected edges, we give a construction of this polytope, up to equivalence of normal fans, as a Minkowski sum of matroid polytopes. Finally, we apply this geometric insight to construct a new ordering-based search algorithm for causal inference via directed acyclic graphical models.

The present paper studies multiple failure and signature analysis of coherent systems using the theory of monomial ideals. While system reliability has been studied using Hilbert series of monomial ideals, this is not enough to understand in a deeper sense the ideal structure features that reflect the behavior of the system under multiple simultaneous failures and signature. Therefore, we introduce the lcm-filtration of a monomial ideal, and we study the Hilbert series and resolutions of the corresponding ideals. Given a monomial ideal, we explicitly compute the resolutions for all ideals in the associated lcm-filtration, and we apply this to study coherent systems. Some computational results are shown in examples to demonstrate the usefulness of this approach and the computational issues that arise. We also study the failure distribution from a statistical point of view by means of the algebraic tools described.

Abstract:
We apply the methods of algebraic reliability to the study of percolation on trees. To a complete $k$-ary tree $T_{k,n}$ of depth $n$ we assign a monomial ideal $I_{k,n}$ on $\sum_{i=1}^n k^i$ variables and $k^n$ minimal monomial generators. We give explicit recursive formulae for the Betti numbers of $I_{k,n}$ and their Hilbert series, which allow us to study explicitly percolation on $T_{k,n}$.…

We study bounds on this percolation and study its asymptotical behavior with the mentioned commutative algebra techniques.

Abstract:
The relation space of a hyperplane arrangement is the vector space of all linear dependencies among the defining forms of the hyperplanes in the arrangement. In this paper, we study the relationship between the relation space and the Orlik--Terao ideal of an arrangement. In particular, we characterize spanning sets of the relation space in terms of the Orlik--Terao ideal. This result generalizes a…

This result generalizes a characterization of 2-formal arrangements due to Schenck and Tohǎneanu \cite[Theorem 2.3]{ST}. We also study the minimal prime ideals of subideals of the Orlik--Terao ideal associated to subsets of the relation space. Finally, we give examples to show that for a 2-formal arrangement, the codimension of the Orlik--Terao ideal is not necessarily equal to that of its subideal generated by the quadratic elements.

Abstract:
We study various ideals arising in the theory of system reliability. We use ideas from the theory of divisors, orientations and matroids on graphs to describe the minimal polyhedral cellular free resolutions of these ideals. In each case we give an explicit combinatorial description of the minimal generating set for each higher syzygy module in terms of the acyclic orientations of the graph, the…

We study various ideals arising in the theory of system reliability. We use ideas from the theory of divisors, orientations and matroids on graphs to describe the minimal polyhedral cellular free resolutions of these ideals. In each case we give an explicit combinatorial description of the minimal generating set for each higher syzygy module in terms of the acyclic orientations of the graph, the $q$-reduced divisors and the bounded regions of the graphic hyperplane arrangement. The resolutions of all these ideals are closely related, and their Betti numbers are independent of the characteristic of the base field. We apply these results to compute the reliability of their associated coherent systems.
