Erdős and Rado conjectured in 1960 that every family $\mathcal{H}$ of $\ell$-element sets of size at least $K(r)^\ell$ contains an $r$-sunflower, where $K(r)$ is some function that depends only on $r$. We prove that if $\mathcal{H}$ is a family of $\ell$-element sets of VC-dimension at most $d$ and $|\mathcal{H}| > (C r (\log d+\log^\ast \ell))^\ell$ for some absolute constant $C > 0$, then $\mathcal{H}$ contains an $r$-sunflower. This improves a recent result of Fox, Pach, and Suk. When $d=1$, we obtain a sharp bound, namely that $|\mathcal{H}| > (r-1)^\ell$ is sufficient. Along the way, we establish a strengthening of the Kahn-Kalai conjecture for set families of bounded VC-dimension, which is of independent interest.

In this paper, we study a Dirichlet type problem for the non-pluripolar complex Monge - Ampère equation with prescribed singularity on a bounded domain of $\mathbb{C}^n$. We provide a local version for an existence and uniqueness theorem proved by Darvas, Di Nezza and Lu. Our work also extends a result of Ahag, Cegrell, Czyz and Pham.

Widespread air source heat pump (ASHP) adoption faces several challenges that on-site thermal energy storage (TES), particularly thermochemical salt hydrate TES, can mitigate. No techno-economic analyses for salt-hydrate-based TES in residential applications exist. We quantify the residential space heating value of four salt hydrate TES materials - MgSO4, MgCl2, K2CO3, and SrBr2 - coupled with ASHPs across 4,800 representative households in 12 U.S. cities by embedding salt-hydrate-specific Ragone plots into a techno-economic model of coupled ASHP-TES operations. In Detroit, salt hydrate TES is projected to reduce household annual electricity costs by up to $\$$241 (8$\%$). Cost savings from TES can differ by over an order of magnitude between households and salt hydrates. We identify the most promising salt in this study, SrBr2, due to its high energy density and low humidification parasitic load. Break-even capital costs of SrBr2-based TES range from $\$$13/kWh to $\$$17/kWh, making it the only salt hydrate studied to reach and exceed the U.S. Department of Energy's $\$$15/kWh TES cost target. Sensitivities highlight the importance of variable TES sizing and efficiency losses in the value of TES.

In this paper, we consider a class of structured nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problems whose objective function is the sum of three nonconvex functions, one of which is expressed in a difference-of-convex (DC) form. This problem class covers several important structures in the literature including the sum of three functions and the general DC program. We propose a splitting algorithm and prove the subsequential convergence to a stationary point of the problem. The full sequential convergence, along with convergence rates for both the iterates and objective function values, is then established without requiring differentiability of the concave part. Our analysis not only extends but also unifies and improves recent convergence analyses in nonconvex settings. We benchmark our proposed algorithm with notable algorithms in the literature to show its competitiveness on both synthetic data and real power system load data.

In this paper, we study the distance problem in the setting of finite p-adic rings. In odd dimensions, our results are essentially sharp. In even dimensions, we clarify the conjecture and provide examples to support it. Surprisingly, compared to the finite field case, in this setting, we are able to provide a large family of sets such that the distance conjecture holds. By developing new restriction type estimates associated to circles and orbits, with a group theoretic argument, we will prove the $4/3$-parallel result in the two dimensions. This answers a question raised by Alex Iosevich. In a more general scenario, the existence/distribution of geometric/graph configurations will be also considered in this paper. Our results present improvements and extensions of recent results due to Ben Lichtin (2019, 2023). In comparison with Lichtin's method, our approach is much simpler and flexible, which is also one of the novelties in this paper.

We initiate the systematic study of the following Turán-type question. Suppose $Γ$ is a graph with $n$ vertices such that the edge density between any pair of subsets of vertices of size at least $t$ is at most $1 - c$, for some $t$ and $c > 0$. What is the largest number of edges in a subgraph $G \subseteq Γ$ which does not contain a fixed graph $H$ as an induced subgraph or, more generally, which belongs to a hereditary property $\mathcal{P}$? This provides a common generalization of two recently studied cases, namely $Γ$ being a (pseudo-)random graph and a graph without a large complete bipartite subgraph. We focus on the interesting case where $H$ is a bipartite graph.
We determine the answer up to a constant factor with respect to $n$ and $t$, for certain bipartite $H$ and for $Γ$ either a dense random graph or a Paley graph with a square number of vertices. In particular, our bounds match if $H$ is a tree, or if one part of $H$ has $d$ vertices complete to the other part, all other vertices in that part have degree at most $d$, and the other part has sufficiently many vertices. As applications of the latter result, we answer a question of Alon, Krivelevich, and Samotij on the largest subgraph with a hereditary property which misses a bipartite graph, and determine up to a constant factor the largest number of edges in a string subgraph of $Γ$. The proofs are based on a variant of the dependent random choice and a novel approach for finding induced copies by inductively defining probability distributions supported on induced copies of smaller subgraphs.

The aim of this article is the classification of simple 0-dimensional isolated complete intersection singularities in positive characteristic. As usual, a singularity is called simple or 0-modal if there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of singularities into which the given singularity can deform. The notion of simpleness was introduced by V. I. Arnold and the classification of low modality singularities has become a fundamental task in singularity theory. Simple complex analytic isolated complete intersection singularities (ICIS) were classified by M. Giusti. However, the classification in positive characteristic requires different methods and is much more involved. The final result is nevertheless similar to the classification in characteristic 0 with some additional normal forms in low characteristic. The theoretical results in this paper mainly concern families of ICIS that are formal in the fiber and algebraic in the base (formal deformation theory is not sufficient). In particular, we give a definition of modality in this situation and prove its semicontinuity.

We give a polynomial-time algorithm that samples from the Gibbs measure up to vanishing total variation error, for any model whose mixture satisfies $$ξ''(s) < \frac{1}{(1-s)^2}, \qquad \forall s\in [0,1).$$ This includes the pure $p$-spin glasses above a critical temperature that is within an absolute ($p$-independent) constant of the so-called shattering phase transition. Our algorithm follows the algorithmic stochastic localization approach introduced in (Alaoui, Montanari, Sellke, 20022). A key step of this approach is to estimate the mean of a sequence of tilted measures. We produce an improved estimator for this task by identifying a suitable correction to the TAP fixed point selected by approximate message passing (AMP). As a consequence, we improve the algorithm's guarantee over previous work, from normalized Wasserstein to total variation error. In particular, the new algorithm and analysis opens the way to perform inference about one-dimensional projections of the measure.

Significant work has been devoted to implementing tools for persistent homology diagrams; however, computing representative cycles corresponding to each point in the diagram can still be inefficient. To circumvent this problem, we extend the twist algorithm of Chen and Kerber. Our extension is based on a new technique we call saving, which supplements their existing killing technique. The resulting two-pass strategy can be realized using an existing matrix reduction implementation as a black-box and improves the efficiency of computing representatives of persistent homology generators. We prove the correctness of the new approach and experimentally show its performance.

In this paper, we develop a splitting algorithm incorporating Bregman distances to solve a broad class of linearly constrained composite optimization problems, whose objective function is the separable sum of possibly nonconvex nonsmooth functions and a smooth function, coupled by a difference of functions. This structure encapsulates numerous significant nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization problems in the current literature including the linearly constrained difference-of-convex problems. Relying on the successive linearization and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), the proposed algorithm exhibits the global subsequential convergence to a stationary point of the underlying problem. We also establish the convergence of the full sequence generated by our algorithm under the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz property and some mild assumptions. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is tested on a robust principal component analysis problem and a nonconvex optimal power flow problem.

The joint alignment of multivariate functional data plays an important role in various fields such as signal processing, neuroscience and medicine, including the statistical analysis of data from wearable devices. Traditional methods often ignore the phase variability and instead focus on the variability in the observed amplitude. We present a novel method for joint alignment of multivariate quasi-periodic functions using deep neural networks, decomposing, but retaining all the information in the data by preserving both phase and amplitude variability. Our proposed neural network uses a special activation of the output that builds on the unit simplex transformation, and we utilize a loss function based on the Fisher-Rao metric to train our model. Furthermore, our method is unsupervised and can provide an optimal common template function as well as subject-specific templates. We demonstrate our method on two simulated datasets and one real example, comprising data from 12-lead 10s electrocardiogram recordings.

We study Glauber dynamics for sampling from discrete distributions $μ$ on the hypercube $\{\pm 1\}^n$. Recently, techniques based on spectral independence have successfully yielded optimal $O(n)$ relaxation times for a host of different distributions $μ$. We show that spectral independence is universal: a relaxation time of $O(n)$ implies spectral independence.
We then study a notion of tractability for $μ$, defined in terms of smoothness of the multilinear extension of its Hamiltonian -- $\log μ$ -- over $[-1,+1]^n$. We show that Glauber dynamics has relaxation time $O(n)$ for such $μ$, and using the universality of spectral independence, we conclude that these distributions are also fractionally log-concave and consequently satisfy modified log-Sobolev inequalities. We sharpen our estimates and obtain approximate tensorization of entropy and the optimal $\widetilde{O}(n)$ mixing time for random Hamiltonians, i.e. the classically studied mixed $p$-spin model at sufficiently high temperature. These results have significant downstream consequences for concentration of measure, statistical testing, and learning.

Over the years, computational imaging with accurate nonlinear physical models has drawn considerable interest due to its ability to achieve high-quality reconstructions. However, such nonlinear models are computationally demanding. A popular choice for solving the corresponding inverse problems is accelerated stochastic proximal methods (ASPMs), with the caveat that each iteration is expensive. To overcome this issue, we propose a mini-batch quasi-Newton proximal method (BQNPM) tailored to image-reconstruction problems with total-variation regularization. It involves an efficient approach that computes a weighted proximal mapping at a cost similar to that of the proximal mapping in ASPMs. However, BQNPM requires fewer iterations than ASPMs to converge. We assess the performance of BQNPM on three-dimensional inverse-scattering problems with linear and nonlinear physical models. Our results on simulated and real data show the effectiveness and efficiency of BQNPM,

If $n$ is fixed and $\frac{s}{r}$ is less than and bounded away from $1-\frac{1}{n-1}$, then $R(n;r,s)$ is known to grow exponentially in $r$, while if $\frac{s}{r}$ is greater than and bounded away from $1-\frac{1}{n-1}$, then $R(n;r,s)$ is bounded. Here we prove bounds for $R(n;r,s)$ in the intermediate range where $\frac{s}{r}$ is close to $1 - \frac{1}{n-1}$ by establishing a connection to the maximum size of error-correcting codes near the zero-rate threshold.

We show that, for any $δ> 0$, the down-up walk on independent sets of size $k \leq (1-δ)α_c(Δ)n$ mixes in time $O_{Δ,δ}(k\log{n})$, thereby resolving a conjecture of Davies and Perkins in an optimal form. Here, $α_{c}(Δ)n$ is the NP-hardness threshold for the problem of counting independent sets of a given size in a graph on $n$ vertices of maximum degree $Δ$. Our mixing time has optimal dependence on $k,n$ for the entire range of $k$; previously, even polynomial mixing was not known. In fact, for $k = Ω_Δ(n)$ in this range, we establish a log-Sobolev inequality with optimal constant $Ω_{Δ,δ}(1/n)$.
At the heart of our proof are three new ingredients, which may be of independent interest. The first is a method for lifting $\ell_\infty$-independence from a suitable distribution on the discrete cube -- in this case, the hard-core model -- to the slice by proving stability of an Edgeworth expansion using a multivariate zero-free region for the base distribution. The second is a generalization of the Lee-Yau induction to prove log-Sobolev inequalities for distributions on the slice with considerably less symmetry than the uniform distribution. The third is a sharp decomposition-type result which provides a lossless comparison between the Dirichlet form of the original Markov chain and that of the so-called projected chain in the presence of a contractive coupling.

Given a random sample from a multivariate normal distribution whose covariance matrix is a Toeplitz matrix, we study the largest off-diagonal entry of the sample correlation matrix. Assuming the multivariate normal distribution has the covariance structure of an auto-regressive sequence, we establish a phase transition in the limiting distribution of the largest off-diagonal entry. We show that the limiting distributions are of Gumbel-type (with different parameters) depending on how large or small the parameter of the autoregressive sequence is. At the critical case, we obtain that the limiting distribution is the maximum of two independent random variables of Gumbel distributions. This phase transition establishes the exact threshold at which the auto-regressive covariance structure behaves differently than its counterpart with the covariance matrix equal to the identity. Assuming the covariance matrix is a general Toeplitz matrix, we obtain the limiting distribution of the largest entry under the ultra-high dimensional settings: it is a weighted sum of two independent random variables, one normal and the other following a Gumbel-type law. The counterpart of the non-Gaussian case is also discussed. As an application, we study a high-dimensional covariance testing problem.

The first goal of this paper is to prove a sharp condition to guarantee of having a positive proportion of all congruence classes of triangles in given sets in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$. More precisely, for $A, B, C\subset \mathbb{F}_q^2$, if $|A||B||C|^{1/2}\gg q^4$, then for any $λ\in \mathbb{F}_q\setminus \{0\}$, the number of congruence classes of triangles with vertices in $A\times B\times C$ and one side-length $λ$ is at least $\gg q^2$. In higher dimensions, we obtain similar results for $k$-simplex but under a slightly stronger condition. Compared to the well--known $L^2$ method in the literature, our approach offers better results in both conditions and conclusions. When $A=B=C$, the second goal of this paper is to give a new and unified proof of the best current results on the distribution of simplex due to Bennett, Hart, Iosevich, Pakianathan, and Rudnev (2017) and McDonald (2020). The third goal of this paper is to study a Furstenberg-type problem associated to a set of rigid motions. The main ingredients in our proofs are incidence bounds between points and rigid motions. While the incidence bounds for large sets are due to the author and Semin Yoo (2023), the bound for small sets will be proved by using a point--line incidence bound in $\mathbb{F}_q^3$ due to Kollár (2015).

Let $A$ and $B$ be sets in a finite vector space. In this paper, we study the magnitude of the set $A\cap f(B)$, where $f$ runs through a set of transformations. More precisely, we will focus on the cases that the set of transformations is given by orthogonal matrices or orthogonal projections. One of the most important contributions of this paper is to show that if $A, B\subset \mathbb{F}_q^d$ satisfy some natural conditions then, for almost every $g\in O(d)$, there are at least $\gg q^d$ elements $z\in \mathbb{F}_q^d$ such that \[|A\cap (g(B)+z)| \sim \frac{|A||B|}{q^d}.\] This infers that $|A-gB|\gg q^d$ for almost every $g\in O(d)$. In the flavor of expanding functions, with $|A|\le |B|$, we also show that the image $A-gB$ grows exponentially. In two dimensions, the result simply says that if $|A|=q^x$ and $|B|=q^y$, as long as $0<x\le y<2$, then for almost every $g\in O(2)$, we can always find $ε=ε(x, y)>0$ such that $|A-gB|\gg |B|^{1+ε}$. To prove these results, we need to develop a new and robust incidence bound between points and rigid motions by using a number of techniques including algebraic methods and discrete Fourier analysis. Our results are essentially sharp in odd dimensions.

We show that if $G$ is a pseudo-random graph, then under some mild conditions, the VC dimension of $\mathcal{H}(U)$ can be bounded from below. Specific cases of this theorem recover and improve previous results on VC-dimension of functions defined by the well-studied distance and dot-product graphs over a finite field.

Given a connected ordered graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, consider the multi-linear form $$ Λ_G(f_1,f_2, \dots, f_n)=\int_{x^1, \dots, x^n \in X} \ \prod_{(i,j) \in {\mathcal E}(G)} K(x^i,x^j) \prod_{l=1}^n f_l(x^l) dμ(x^l), $$ where ${\mathcal E}(G)$ is the edge set of $G$. Define $Λ_G(p_1, \ldots, p_n)$ as the smallest constant $C>0$ such that the inequality $$ Λ_G(f_1, \dots, f_n) \leq C \prod_{i=1}^n {||f_i||}_{L^{p_i}(X, μ)}$$ holds for all non-negative real-valued functions $f_i$, $1\le i\le n$, on $X$. The basic question is, how does the structure of $G$ and the mapping properties of the operator $T_K$ influence the sharp exponents. In this paper, this question is investigated mainly in the case $X={\Bbb F}_q^d$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over the field with $q$ elements, and $K(x^i,x^j)$ is the indicator function of the sphere evaluated at $x^i-x^j$. This provides a connection with the study of $L^p$-improving measures and distance set problems.

Building up on the same ideas, we resolve a conjecture of Bollobás, Leader and Tiba that for subsets $A,B$ of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of size at most $αp$ for an appropriate constant $α>0$, one only needs three elements $b_1,b_2,b_3\in B$ to guarantee $|A+\{b_1,b_2,b_3\}|\ge |A|+|B|-1$. Allowing the use of larger subsets $A'$, we show that for sets $A$ of bounded doubling, one only needs a subset $A'$ with $o(|A|)$ elements to guarantee that $A+A'=A+A$. We also address another conjecture and a question raised by Bollobás, Leader and Tiba on high-dimensional analogs and sets whose sumset cannot be saturated by a bounded size subset.

Consider a host hypergraph $G$ which contains a spanning structure due to minimum degree considerations. We collect three results proving that if the edges of $G$ are sampled at the appropriate rate then the spanning structure still appears with high probability in the sampled hypergraph. We prove such results for perfect matchings in hypergraphs above Dirac thresholds, for $K_r$-factors in graphs satisfying the Hajnal--Szemerédi minimum degree condition, and for bounded-degree spanning trees. In each case our proof is based on constructing a spread measure and then applying recent results on the (fractional) Kahn--Kalai conjecture connecting the existence of such measures with probabilistic thresholds.
For our second result we give a shorter and more general proof of a recent theorem of Allen, Böttcher, Corsten, Davies, Jenssen, Morris, Roberts, and Skokan which handles the $r=3$ case with different techniques. In particular, we answer a question of theirs with regards to the number of $K_r$-factors in graphs satisfying the Hajnal--Szemerédi minimum degree condition.

In this paper, we consider a class of structured nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problems, in which the objective function is formed by the sum of a possibly nonsmooth nonconvex function and a differentiable function whose gradient is Lipschitz continuous, subtracted by a weakly convex function. This type of structured problems has many practical applications in machine learning and statistics such as compressed sensing, signal recovery, sparse dictionary learning, clustering, matrix factorization, and others. We develop a flexible extrapolated proximal subgradient algorithm for solving these problems with guaranteed subsequential convergence to a stationary point. The global convergence of the whole sequence generated by our algorithm is also established under the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz property. To illustrate the promising numerical performance of the proposed algorithm, we conduct numerical experiments on two important nonconvex models. This includes a least squares problem with a nonconvex regularization and an optimal power flow problem with distributed energy resources.

As a direct application of these estimates, we obtain significant improvements to the best known dimensional thresholds that guarantee that a given compact subset of Euclidean space determines a positive proportion of all possible congruence classes of simplexes. As a direct application of these estimates, we obtain significant improvements to the best known dimensional thresholds that guarantee that a given compact subset of Euclidean space determines a positive proportion of all possible congruence classes of simplexes. In many regimes this improves the results previously obtained by Erdogan-Hart-Iosevich (\cite{EHI}), Greenleaf-Iosevich-Liu-Palsson (\cite{GILP}) and others.

Abstract:
Let $V$ be a variety in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$ and $E\subset V$. It is known that if any line passing through the origin contains a bounded number of points from $E$, then $|\prod(E)|=|\{x\cdot y\colon x, y\in E\}|\gg q$ whenever $|E|\gg q^{\frac{d}{2}}$. In this paper, we show that the barrier $\frac{d}{2}$ can be broken when $V$ is a paraboloid in some specific dimensions. The main novelty in our appr…

The main novelty in our approach is to link this question to the distance problem in one lower dimensional vector space, allowing us to use recent developments in this area to obtain improvements.

Abstract:
In this paper, we provide a general framework for counting geometric structures in pseudo-random graphs. As applications, our theorems recover and improve several results on the finite field analog of questions originally raised in the continuous setting. The results present interactions between discrete geometry, geometric measure theory, and graph theory.
