Finer limit circle/limit point classification for Sturm-Liouville operators
Abstract: In this paper we introduce an index $\ell_c \in \mathbb{N}_0 \cup \lbrace \infty \rbrace$ which we call the `regularization index' associated to the endpoints, $c\in\{a,b\}$, of nonoscillatory Sturm-Liouville differential expressions with trace class resolvents. This notion extends the limit circle/limit point dichotomy in the sense that $\ell_c~=~0$ at some endpoint if and only if the expression… ▽ More

Wiener-Hopf factorizations and matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials
Abstract: We compare two methods for analysing periodic dimer models. These are the matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials approach due to Duits and one of the authors, and the Wiener-Hopf approach due to Berggren and Duits. We establish their equivalence in the special case of the Aztec diamond. Additionally, we provide explicit formulas for the matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials/Wiener-Hopf factors in the… ▽ More

The Jacobi operator on $(-1,1)$ and its various $m$-functions
Abstract: We offer a detailed treatment of spectral and Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for all self-adjoint Jacobi operator realizations of the differential expression \begin{align*} τ_{α,β} = - (1-x)^{-α} (1+x)^{-β}(d/dx) \big((1-x)^{α+1}(1+x)^{β+1}\big) (d/dx),& \\ α, β\in \mathbb{R}, \; x \in (-1,1),& \end{align*} in $L^2\big((-1,1); (1-x)^α (1+x)^β dx\big)$, $α, β\in \mathbb{R}$. Recurrence Coefficients for Orthogonal Polynomials with a Logarithmic Weight Function
Abstract: We prove an asymptotic formula for the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials with orthogonality measure $\log \bigl(\frac{2}{1-x}\bigr) {\rm d}x$ on $(-1,1)$. The asymptotic formula confirms a special case of a conjecture by Magnus and extends earlier results by Conway and one of the authors. The proof relies on the Riemann-Hilbert method. The main difficulty in applying the method to… ▽ More

The Jacobi operator and its Donoghue $m$-functions
Abstract: In this paper we construct Donoghue $m$-functions for the Jacobi differential operator in $L^2\big((-1,1); (1-x)^α (1+x)^β dx\big)$, associated to the differential expression \begin{align*} \begin{split} τ_{α,β} = - (1-x)^{-α} (1+x)^{-β}(d/dx) \big((1-x)^{α+ 1}(1+x)^{β+ 1}\big) (d/dx),& \\ x \in (-1,1), \; α, β\in \mathbb{R}, \end{split} \end{align*} whenever at least one endpoint, $x=\pm 1$, is i… ▽ More

Donoghue $m$-functions for singular Sturm--Liouville operators

A scalar Riemann-Hilbert problem on the torus: Applications to the KdV equation
Abstract: We take a closer look at the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated to one-gap solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. To gain more insight, we reformulate it as a scalar Riemann-Hilbert problem on the torus. This enables us to derive deductively the model vector-valued and singular matrix-valued solutions in terms of Jacobi theta functions. We compare our results with those obtained in recent li… ▽ More

Riemann-Hilbert Theory without local Parametrix Problems: Applications to Orthogonal Polynomials
Abstract: We study whether in the setting of the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method one can avoid solving local parametrix problems explicitly, while still obtaining asymptotic results. We show that this can be done, provided an a priori estimate for the exact solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem is known. This enables us to derive asymptotic results for orthogonal polynomials on $[-1,1]$ with… ▽ More

Parametrix problem for the Korteweg--de Vries equation with steplike initial data
Abstract: In this paper we study the asymptotics of solutions to the Korteweg--de Vries equation with steplike initial data, which lead to shock waves in the region between the asymptotically constant region and the soliton region, as $t \rightarrow \infty$. To achieve this, we present an alternative approach to the usual argument involving a small norm Riemann--Hilbert problem, which is based instead on th… ▽ More

Asymptotics of KdV shock waves via the Riemann-Hilbert approach
Abstract: This paper discusses some general aspects and techniques associated with the long-time asymptotics of steplike solutions of the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation via vector Riemann--Hilbert problems. We also elaborate on an ill-posedness of the matrix Riemann--Hilbert problem for the KdV case in the class of matrices with square integrable singularities. Furthermore, we refine the asymptotics for… ▽ More
