A non-linear Black-Scholes-type equation is studied within counterparty risk models. The classical hypothesis on the uniform Lipschitz-continuity of the non-linear reaction function allows for an equivalent transformation of the semi-linear Black-Scholes equation into a standard parabolic problem with a monotone non-linear reaction function and an inhomogeneous linear diffusion equation. This setting allows us to construct a scheme of monotone, increasing or decreasing, iterations that converge monotonically to the true solution. As typically any numerical solution of this problem uses most computational power for computing an approximate solution to the inhomogeneous linear diffusion equation, we discuss also this question and suggest several solution methods, including those based on Monte Carlo and finite differences/elements.

The weak and strong comparison principles, respectively, are investigated for quasi-linear elliptic boundary value problems with the $p$-Laplacian in one space dimension. We treat the degenerate case of $2 < p < \infty$ and allow also for the nontrivial convection velocity $b\colon [-1,1]\to \mathbb{R}$ in the underlying domain $(-1,1)$. We establish the weak comparison principle under a rather general, natural sufficient condition on the convection velocity, $b(x)$, and the reaction function, ${\varphi}(x,u)$. Furthermore, we establish also the strong comparison principle under a number of various additional hypotheses. In contrast, with these hypotheses being violated, we construct also a few rather natural counterexamples to the strong comparison principle and discuss their applications to an interesting classical problem of fluid flow in porous medium, seepage flow of fluids in inclined bed. Our methods are based on a mixture of classical and new techniques.

Analytic smooth solutions of a general, strongly parabolic semi-linear Cauchy problem of $2m$-th order in $\mathbb{R}^N\times (0,T)$ with analytic coefficients (in space and time variables) and analytic initial data (in space variables) are investigated. They are expressed in terms of holomorphic continuation of global (weak) solutions to the system valued in a suitable Besov interpolation space of $B^{s;p,p}$-type at every time moment $t\in [0,T]$. Given $0 < T'< T\leq \infty$, it is proved that any $B^{s;p,p}$-type solution $u\colon \mathbb{R}^N\times (0,T)\to \mathbb{C}^M$ with analytic initial data possesses a bounded holomorphic continuation $u(x + \mathrm{i}y, σ+ \mathrm{i}τ)$ into a complex domain in $\mathbb{C}^N\times \mathbb{C}$ defined by $(x,σ)\in \mathbb{R}^N\times (T',T)$, $|y| < A'$ and $|τ| < B'$, where $A', B'> 0$ are constants depending upon~$T'$. The proof uses the extension of a weak solution to a $B^{s;p,p}$-type solution in a domain in $\mathbb{C}^N\times \mathbb{C}$, such that this extension satisfies the Cauchy-Riemann equations. The holomorphic extension is obtained with a help from holomorphic semigroups and maximal regularity theory for parabolic problems in Besov interpolation spaces of $B^{s;p,p}$-type imbedded (densely and continuously) into an $L^p$-type Lebesgue space. Applications include risk models for European options in Mathematical Finance.

We establish boundary regularity results in Hölder spaces for the degenerate parabolic problem obtained from the Heston stochastic volatility model in Mathematical Finance set up in the spatial domain (upper half-plane) $\mathbb{H} = \mathbb{R}\times (0,\infty)\subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Starting with nonsmooth initial data $u_0\in H$, we take advantage of smoothing properties of the parabolic semigroup $\mathrm{e}^{-t\mathcal{A}}\colon H\to H$, $t\in \mathbb{R}_+$, generated by the Heston model, to derive the smoothness of the solution $u(t) = \mathrm{e}^{-t\mathcal{A}} u_0$ for all $t>0$. The existence and uniqueness of a weak solution is obtained in a Hilbert space $H = L^2(\mathbb{H};\mathfrak{w})$ with very weak growth restrictions at infinity and on the boundary $\partial\mathbb{H} = \mathbb{R}\times \{ 0\}\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ of the half-plane $\mathbb{H}$. We investigate the influence of the boundary behavior of the initial data $u_0\in H$ on the boundary behavior of $u(t)$ for $t>0$.

According to a result of the first author, the solutions satisfy a certain 'local' type of symmetry. Using this, we first prove that the solutions are radially symmetric provided that $f$ satisfies appropriate growth conditions near its zeros. In a second part we study the autonomous case, $f=f(u)$. The solutions of the equation are critical points for an associated variation problem. We show under rather mild conditions that global and local minimizers of the variational problem are radial.

We study the Heston model for pricing European options on stocks with stochastic volatility. This is a Black\--Scholes\--type equation whose spatial domain for the logarithmic stock price $x\in \RR$ and the variance $v\in (0,\infty)$ is the half\--plane $\HH = \RR\times (0,\infty)$. The {\it volatility\/} is then given by $\sqrt{v}$. The diffusion equation for the price of the European call option $p = p(x,v,t)$ at time $t\leq T$ is parabolic and degenerates at the boundary $\partial \HH = \RR\times \{0\}$ as $v\to 0+$. The goal is to hedge with this option against volatility fluctuations, i.e., the function $v\mapsto p(x,v,t)\colon (0,\infty)\to \RR$ and its (local) inverse are of particular interest. We prove that $\frac{\partial p}{\partial v}(x,v,t) \not= 0$ holds almost everywhere in $\HH\times (-\infty,T)$ by establishing the analyticity of $p$ in both, space $(x,v)$ and time $t$ variables. To this end, we are able to show that the Black\--Scholes\--type operator, which appears in the diffusion equation, generates a holomorphic $C^0$-semigroup in a suitable weighted $L^2$-space over $\HH$. We show that the $C^0$-semigroup solution can be extended to a holomorphic function in a complex domain in $\CC^2\times \CC$, by establishing some new a~priori weighted $L^2$-estimates over certain complex "shifts" of $\HH$ for the unique holomorphic extension. These estimates depend only on the weighted $L^2$-norm of the terminal data over $\HH$ (at $t=T$).

We study existence, uniqueness, and long-time asymptotic behavior of the solutions $u(x,t)$, $(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}_+$. We prove also the existence and uniqueness (up to a spatial shift) of a travelling wave $U$. Our main result is the uniform convergence (for $x\in \mathbb{R}$) of every solution $u(x,t)$ of the Cauchy problem to a single traveling wave $U(x-ct + ζ)$ as $t\to \infty$. The speed $c$ and the travelling wave $U$ are determined uniquely by $f$, whereas the shift $ζ$ is determined by the initial data.
