Homogeneous spaces are de Branges' Hilbert spaces of entire functions with the property that certain weighted rescaling transforms induce isometries of the space into itself. A classical example of a homogeneous space is the Paley-Wiener space of entire functions with exponential type at most a being square integrable on the real axis. Other examples occur in the theory of the Bessel equation. Being homogeneous is a strong property, and one can describe all homogeneous spaces, their structure Hamiltonians, and the measures associated with chains of such spaces, explicitly in terms of powers, logarithms, and confluent hypergeometric functions.
The theory of homogeneous spaces was in essence settled by L.de Branges in the early 1960's. However, in his work some connections and explicit formulae are not given, some results are stated without a proof, and last but not least a mistake occurs which seemingly remained unnoticed up to the day.
In this paper we give a detailed account on homogeneous spaces. We provide explicit proofs for all formulae and relations between the mentioned objects, and correct the mentioned mistake.

An indeterminate moment problem can be considered as a canonical system in limit circle case by rewriting the three-term recurrence of the problem to a first order vector-valued recurrence. We give a bound for the growth of the Nevanlinna matrix in terms of the parameters of this canonical system. In most situations this bound can be evaluated explicitly. It is sharp in the sense that for well-behaved parameters it coincides with the actual growth of the Nevanlinna matrix up to multiplicative constants.

A typical example of such an operator is the Schrödinger operator on a star-graph with a finite number of finite or infinite edges and an interface condition at the common vertex. A wide class of "selfadjoint" interface conditions, subject to a assumption which is generically satisfied, is considered. We investigate properties of spectral multiplicity of singular spectrum (continuous as well as point) in terms of the spectral data of decoupled operators.

We investigate the spectrum of 2-dimensional canonical systems in the limit circle case. It is discrete and, by the Krein-de Branges formula, cannot be more dense than the integers. But in many cases it will be more sparse. The spectrum of a particular selfadjoint realisation coincides with the zeroes of one entry of the monodromy matrix of the system. Classical function theory thus establishes an immediate connection between the growth of the monodromy matrix and the distribution of the spectrum. We prove a generic and flexibel upper estimate for the monodromy matrix, use it to prove a bound for the case of a continuous Hamiltonian, and construct examples which show that this bound is sharp. The first two results run along the lines of earlier work of R.Romanov, but significantly improve upon these results. This is seen even on the rough scale of exponential order.

De Branges' inverse spectral theorem states that the assignment $H\mapsto q_H$ is a bijection between trace-normalised Hamiltonians and Nevanlinna functions. We prove that $q_H$ has an asymptotics towards $i\infty$ whose leading coefficient is some (complex) multiple of a regularly varying function if and only if the primitive $M$ of $H$ is regularly or rapidly varying at $0$ and its off-diagonal entries do not oscillate too much. The leading coefficient in the asymptotic of $q_H$ towards $i\infty$ is related to the behaviour of $M$ towards $0$ by explicit formulae. The speed of growth in absolute value depends only on the diagonal entries of $M$, while the argument of the leading coefficient corresponds to the relative size of the off-diagonal entries.

De Branges' inverse spectral theorem states that the assignment $H\mapsto q_H$ is a bijection between Hamiltonians (suitably normalised) and Nevanlinna functions.
The main result of the paper is a criterion when the singular integral of the spectral measure, i.e. Re $q_H(iy)$, dominates its Poisson integral Im $q_H(iy)$ for $y\to+\infty$. Two equivalent conditions characterising this situation are provided. The first one is analytic in nature, very simple, and explicit in terms of the primitive $M$ of $H$. It merely depends on the relative size of the off-diagonal entries of $M$ compared with the diagonal entries. The second condition is of geometric nature and technically more complicated, but explicit in terms of $H$ itself. It involves the relative size of the off-diagonal entries of $H$, a measurement for oscillations of the diagonal of $H$, and a condition on the speed and smoothness of the rotation of $H$.

De Branges' inverse spectral theorem states that the assignment $H\mapsto q_H$ is a bijection between Hamiltonians (suitably normalised) and Nevanlinna functions.
We give upper and lower bounds for $|q_H(z)|$ and $\operatorname{Im} q_H(z)$ when $z$ tends to $i\infty$ non-tangentially. These bounds depend on the Hamiltonian $H$ near the left endpoint $a$ and determine $|q_H(z)|$ up to universal multiplicative constants. We obtain that the growth of $|q_H(z)|$ is independent of the off-diagonal entries of $H$ and depends monotonically on the diagonal entries in a natural way. The imaginary part is, in general, not fully determined by our bounds (in forthcoming work we shall prove that for "most" Hamiltonians also $\operatorname{Im} q_H(z)$ is fully determined).
We translate the asymptotic behaviour of $q_H$ to the behaviour of the spectral measure $μ_H$ of $H$ by means of Abelian--Tauberian results and obtain conditions for membership of growth classes defined by weighted integrability condition (Kac classes) or by boundedness of tails at $\pm\infty$ w.r.t. a weight function. Moreover, we apply our results to Krein strings and Sturm--Liouville equations.

Is the spectrum of the associated selfadjoint operator discrete ?
If it is discrete, what is its asymptotic distribution ?
Here asymptotic distribution means summability and limit superior conditions relative to comparison functions growing sufficiently fast. Making an analogy with complex analysis, this corresponds to convergence class and type w.r.t.\ proximate orders having order larger than $1$. It is a surprising fact that these properties depend only on the diagonal entries of $H$.
In 1968 L.de~Branges posed the following question as a fundamental problem:
Which Hamiltonians are the structure Hamiltonian of some\\ de~Branges space ?
We give a complete and explicit answer.

We investigate the order $ρ$ of the four entire functions in the Nevanlinna matrix of an indeterminate Hamburger moment sequence. We give an upper estimate for $ρ$ which is explicit in terms of the parameters of the canonical system associated with the moment sequence via its three-term recurrence. Under a weak regularity assumption this estimate coincides with a lower estimate, and hence $ρ$ becomes computable. Dropping the regularity assumption leads to examples where upper and lower bounds do not coincide and differ from the order. In particular we provide examples for which the order is different from its lower estimate due to M.S.Livšic.

We investigate a class of such systems defined by growth restrictions on $H$ towards $a$. We develop a direct and inverse spectral theory parallel to the theory of Weyl and de Branges for systems in the limit circle case at $a$. Our approach proceeds via -- and is bound to -- Pontryagin space theory. It relies on spectral theory and operator models in such spaces, and on the theory of de Branges Pontryagin spaces.
The main results concerning the direct problem are: (1) showing existence of regularized boundary values at $a$; (2) construction of a singular Weyl coefficient and a scalar spectral measure; (3) construction of a Fourier transform and computation of its action and the action of its inverse as integral transforms. The main results for the inverse problem are: (4) characterization of the class of measures that are obtained via the above construction (positive Borel measures with power growth at $\pm\infty$); (5) a global uniqueness theorem (if Weyl functions or spectral measures coincide, Hamiltonians essentially coincide); (6) a local uniqueness theorem.
In Part II of the paper the results of Part I are applied to Sturm--Liouville equations with singular coefficients. We investigate classes of equations without potential (in particular, equations in impedance form) and Schrödinger equations, where coefficients are assumed to be singular but subject to growth restrictions. We obtain corresponding direct and inverse spectral theorems.

A theorem of L. de Branges characterizes non--density by existence of an entire function of Krein class being related with the weight in a certain way. An analogous result holds true for weighted sup--norm approximation by entire functions of exponential type at most $τ$ and bounded on the real axis ($τ>0$ fixed). We consider approximation in weighted $C_0$-spaces by functions belonging to a prescribed subspace of entire functions which is solely assumed to be invariant under division of zeros and passing from $F(z)$ to $\bar{F(\bar z)}$, and establish the precise analogue of de Branges' theorem.
