We theoretically investigate kaonic atom states based on the latest high precision data of the $2p$ states of the kaonic atoms in $^3$He and $^4$He (J-PARC E62). We consider the phenomenological form for the optical potential proportional to the nuclear density distributions and determine the potential parameters by the latest data. We find two sets of potential parameters for each of $K^--^3$He and $K^--^4$He that reproduce the data. We then extract the potential parameters consistent with the data of $^3$He and $^4$He atoms simultaneously. Using the potential, we investigate the structure of the kaonic atoms and kaonic nuclei for various nuclei up to Sn. We also report the optical potential parameters suited for the global description of the atomic data, the possible strong isospin dependence of the potential, and the different strength of the data of $K^--^3$He and $K^--^4$He in the restrictions on the potential parameters. In addition, we find that the study of the $1s$ states of the kaonic helium atom is very interesting as a next step, and the determination of the orbital angular momenta of the kaonic nuclear states is helpful for the unified understandings of the atomic and nuclear bound states of kaon because of the mutual influence between the atomic and the nuclear states of kaon with the same orbital angular momentum.

We discuss the sensitivity of the observables to $σ_{πN}$ and take into account the typical errors of the up-to-date experiments of the deeply bound pionic atoms. We find that the gap of the binding energies and the width of the deeply bound pionic states are good observables for the $σ_{πN}$ value determination by the experimental data. We also discuss the expected difficulties for the accurate determination of the value of $σ_{πN}$ due to the correlation between the $σ$ term and the potential parameter in the pion-nucleus optical potential.

Modern theories of physics tell that the vacuum is not an empty space. Hidden in the vacuum is a structure of anti-quarks $\bar{q}$ and quarks $q$. The $\bar{q}$ and $q$ pair has the same quantum number as the vacuum and condensates in it since the strong interaction of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is too strong to leave it empty. The $\bar{q}q$ condensation breaks the chiral symmetry of the vacuum. The expectation value $<\bar{q}q>$ is an order parameter. For higher temperature or higher matter-density, $|<\bar{q}q>|$ decreases reflecting the restoration of the symmetry. In contrast to these clear-cut arguments, experimental evidence is so far limited. First of all, the $\bar{q}q$ is nothing but the vacuum itself. It is neither visible nor perceptible. In this article, we unravel this invisible existence by high precision measurement of pionic atoms, $π^-$-meson-nucleus bound systems. Using the $π^-$ as a probe, we demonstrate that $|<\bar{q}q>|$ is reduced in the nucleus at 58% of the normal nuclear density by a factor of 77 $\pm$ 2% compared with that in the vacuum. This reduction indicates that the chiral symmetry is partially restored due to the extremely high density of the nucleus. The present experimental result clearly exhibits the existence of the hidden structure, the chiral condensate, in the vacuum.

In addition, it could be possible to deduce valuable information on the isospin $I = 2$ $ππ$ interaction and the pion-nucleus strong interaction. In this paper, we take into account the $ππ$ strong and electromagnetic interactions, and evaluate the effects on the binding energies by perturbation theory for the double pionic atoms in heavy nuclei. We investigate several combinations of two pionic states and find that the order of magnitude of the energy shifts due to the $ππ$ interaction is around 10 keV for the strong interaction and around 100 keV for the electromagnetic interaction for the ground states.

The $K^-$-nucleus optical potential is revisited to investigate its global feature phenomenologically. It is a puzzle that the energy shift is found to be repulsive in all of the observed kaonic atom, although the $K^-N$ interaction is known to be so attractive as to form the $Λ(1405)$ resonance. To solve this puzzle, we examine the $K^-$ optical potential in the linear density approximation and determine the potential parameters of each kaonic atom so as to reproduce the observed energy shift and absorption width. We find two types of the potentials. One potential has a so large real part as to provide nuclear states with the same quantum number to the atomic state in the last orbit. The level repulsion between the atomic state and the nuclear states takes place due to their mixing, and it makes the atomic state shifted repulsively. The other type of the potential has a large imaginary part and the imaginary part works repulsively for atomic states. We find that only the latter solution reproduce a wide of the observed data, and thus is realized as a $K^-$-nucleus potential for kaonic atom. In the linear nuclear density optical potential, the picture that the repulsive shifts in the atomic states stem from the existence of the nuclear states does not globally stand up. This implies that the $K^-$-nucleus optical potential should have a large imaginary part. We examine some nonlinear density effects and find that the conclusion does not change. We also confirm that the conventionally known optical potentials are categorized into the latter type of the potential.

The structure and the energy spectrum of the $η^{\prime}$ mesonic nuclei are investigated in a relativistic mean field theory. One expects a substantial attraction for the $η^{\prime}$ meson in finite nuclei due to the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in the nuclear medium. Such a hadronic scale interaction for the $η^{\prime}$ mesonic nuclei may provide modification of the nuclear structure. The relativistic mean field theory is a self-contained model for finite nuclei which provides the saturation property within the model, and is good to investigate the structure change of the nucleus induced by the $η^{\prime}$ meson. Using the local density approximation for the mean fields, we solve the equations of motion for the nucleons and the $η^{\prime}$ meson self-consistently, and obtain the nuclear density distribution and the $η^{\prime}$ energy spectrum for the $η^{\prime}$ mesonic nuclei. We take $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca for the target nuclei. We find several bound states of the $η^{\prime}$ meson for these nuclei thanks to the attraction for $η^{\prime}$ in nuclei. We also find a sufficient change of the nuclear structure especially for the $1s$ bound state of $η^{\prime}$. This implies that the production of the $1s$ bound state in nuclear reaction may be suppressed.

Recently, the formation of the $η$ mesic nucleus in the fusion reactions of the light nuclei such as $d + d \rightarrow (η+ α) \rightarrow X$ has been proposed and the experiments have been performed by WASA-at-COSY. We develop a theoretical model to evaluate the formation rate of the $η$ mesic nucleus in the fusion reactions and show the calculated results. We find that the $η$ bound states could be observed in the reactions in cases with the strong attractive and small absorptive $η$-nucleus interactions. We compare our results with existing data of the $d + d \rightarrow η+ α$ and the $d + d \rightarrow {^3 \rm He} + N + π$ reactions. We find that the analyses by our theoretical model with the existing data can provide new information on the $η$-nucleus interaction.

Deuterons emitted at $0^\circ$ in the reaction have been momentum-analyzed by the fragment separator (FRS) used as a high-resolution spectrometer. No distinct structure due to the formation of $η^\prime$-mesic states is observed although a high statistical sensitivity is achieved in the experimental spectra. Upper limits on the formation cross sections of $η^\prime$-mesic states are determined, and thereby a constraint imposed on the $η^\prime$-nucleus interaction is discussed.

High-resolution pionic-atom x-ray spectroscopy was performed with an x-ray spectrometer based on a 240-pixel array of superconducting transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeters at the piM1 beam line of the Paul Scherrer Institute. X-rays emitted by pionic carbon via the 4f->3d transition and the parallel 4d->3p transition were observed with a full-width-at-half-maximum energy resolution of 6.8 eV at 6.4 keV. Measured x-ray energies are consistent with calculated electromagnetic values which considered the strong-interaction effect assessed via the Seki-Masutani potential for the 3p energy level, and favor the electronic population of two filled 1s electrons in the K-shell. Absolute energy calibration with an uncertainty of 0.1 eV was demonstrated under a high-rate hadron beam condition of 1.45 MHz. This is the first application of a TES spectrometer to hadronic-atom x-ray spectroscopy and is an important milestone towards next-generation high-resolution kaonic-atom x-ray spectroscopy.

We consider the pionic atom spectroscopy by the (d,3He) reaction on an odd-neutron nuclear target in this article, which has not been investigated so far. In the (d,3He) reaction on the odd-neutron nuclear target, we can observe the pionic states in the even-neutron nucleus with spin-parity 0+. We expect that this pionic state does not have the additional shifts due to the effects of the residual interaction between neutron-hole and pionic states. For the even-neutron nuclear target cases, we may have to take into account the residual interaction effects to deduce the binding energies of the pionic states precisely from the high precision experimental data since the final pionic states are the pion-particle plus neutron-hole states. Thus, in addition to widening the domain of the pionic atom spectroscopy in nuclear chart, the present study of the (d,3He) reaction on the odd-neutron target is considered to be important to deduce extremely precise information on the binding energies of the observed pionic states, and to know the pion properties and aspects of the symmetries of the strong interaction at finite density. We modify the formula of the even-even nuclear target case to study the pionic atom formation spectra on the even-odd nuclear target and show the numerical results of 117Sn target case. This experiment will be performed at RIBF/RIKEN in near future.

In-medium modification of the eta' mass is discussed in the context of partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium. We emphasize that the U_A(1) anomaly effects causes the eta'-eta mass difference necessarily through the chiral symmetry breaking. As a consequence, the eta' mass is expected to be reduced by order of 100 MeV in nuclear matter where about 30% reduction of chiral symmetry takes place. The strong attraction relating to the eta' mass generation eventually implies that there should be also a strong attractive interaction in the scalar channel of the eta'-N two-body system. We find that the attraction can be strong enough to form a bound state.

We calculate theoretically the formation spectra of eta'(958)-nucleus systems in the (p,d) reaction for the investigation of the in-medium modification of the eta' mass. We show the comprehensive numerical calculations based on a simple form of the eta' optical potential in nuclei with various potential depths. We conclude that one finds an evidence of possible attractive interaction between eta' and nucleus as peak structure appearing around the eta' threshold in light nuclei such as 11C when the attractive potential is stronger than 100 MeV and the absorption width is of order of 40 MeV or less. Spectroscopy of the (p,d) reaction is expected to be performed experimentally at existing facilities, such as GSI. We also estimate the contributions from the omega and phi mesons, which have masses close to the eta' meson, concluding that the observation of the peak structure of the eta'-mesic nuclei is not disturbed although their contributions may not be small.

The in-medium mass of the $η^{\prime}$ meson is discussed in a context of partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium. The $η^{\prime}$ mass is expected to be reduced by order of 100 MeV at the saturation density. The reduction is a consequence of the suppression of the anomaly effect on the $η^{\prime}$ mass induced by partial restoration of chiral symmetry. This strong attraction in $η^{\prime}$ nuclear systems does not accompany large absorption of $η^{\prime}$ into nuclear matter. This leads to the possibility of so narrow bound states of the $η^{\prime}$ meson in nuclei to be seen in hadronic reactions with light nuclear targets.

We find that the non-yrast pionic states such as 2s are expected to be seen in the (d,3He) spectra, which will be helpful to reduce uncertainties of the theoretical calculations in the neutron wave functions in nucleus. The observation of the 2s state with the ground 1s state is also helpful to reduce the experimental uncertainties associated in the calibration of the absolute excitation energy. We find that the nuclear densities probed by atomic pions are quite stable and almost constant for various atomic states and various nuclei. Effects of the pion wave function renormalization to the formation spectra are also evaluated.

The final state interactions in terms of multiple scattering of the K-, p and all other primary particles on their way out of the nucleus is also considered. We will show that all these additional mechanisms allow us to explain the observed spectrum with a "standard" shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models. [1] T. We also estimate the consequences of the uncertainties of the ${\bar K}$ selfenergy in medium to the $φ$-nucleus interaction. We find that it may be possible to see a peak structure in the reaction spectra for the strong attractive potential cases. On the other hand, for strong absorptive interaction cases with relatively weak attractions, it is very difficult to observe clear peaks and we may need to know the spectrum shape in a wide energy region to deduce the properties of $φ$.

We perform a theoretical study of the spectrum of protons with kinetic energies of around 600 MeV, emitted following the interaction of 1 GeV/c kaons with nuclei. A recent experimental analysis of this (K-,p) reaction on 12C, based on the dominant quasielastic process, has suggested a deeply attractive kaon nucleus potential. Our Monte Carlo simulation considers, in addition, the one-and two-nucleon K- absorption processes producing hyperons that decay into πN pairs. We find that this kaon in-flight reaction is not well suited to determine the kaon optical potential due, essentially, to the limited sensitivity of the cross section to its strength, but also to unavoidable uncertainties from the coincidence requirement applied in the experiment. A shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models is perfectly compatible with the observed spectrum.

We study the (K-,p) reaction on nuclei with a 1 GeV/c momentum kaon beam, paying a special attention at the region of emitted protons having kinetic energy above 600 MeV, which was used to claim a deeply attractive kaon nucleus optical potential. Our model describes the nuclear reaction in the framework of a local density approach and the calculations are performed following two different procedures: one is based on a many-body method using the Lindhard function and the other one is based on a Monte Carlo simulation. While both procedures coincide when it comes to consider the contribution of kaon quasi-elastic scattering, the simulation method offers more flexibility since it allows us to account for other processes which also contribute to the proton spectra, such as K- absorption by one and two nucleons producing hyperons. The simulation also considers final state interactions in terms of multiple scattering of the K-, p and all other primary and secondary particles on their way out of the nucleus, as well as the weak decay of the produced hyperons into (pi N). We find that this kaon in-flight reaction is not well suited to determine the kaon optical potential due, essentially, to the limited sensitivity of the cross section to its strength, but also to unavoidable uncertainties in the contribution from other processes. We also simulate the experimental requirement of having, together with the energetic proton, at least one charged particle detected in the decay counter surrounding the target, and find that the shape of the original cross section is appreciably distorted. We conclude that the new mechanisms, not considered in the analysis of the original experiment, allow us to explain the observed spectrum with the shallow kaon nucleus optical potential obtained in chiral models.

We study the (K-,p) reaction on C12 with a kaon beam of 1 GeV momentum, paying a special attention to the region of emitted protons having kinetic energy above 600 MeV, which was used to claim a deep kaon nucleus optical potential [1]. The experiment looks for fast protons emitted from the absorption of in flight kaons by nuclei, but in coincidence with at least one charged particle in the decay counters sandwiching the target. The analysis of the data is done in [1] assuming that the coincidence requirement does not change the shape of the final spectra. However our detailed calculations show that this assumption doesn't hold, and, thus, the final conclusion of this experiment is doubtful.
We perform Monte Carlo simulation of this reaction. The advantage of our method with respect to Green's function method used in [1] is that it allows to account not only for quasi-elastic K- p scattering, but also for the other processes which contribute to the proton spectra. We investigated the effect of the multi-scatterings and of the K- absorptions by one and two nucleons (K- N --> pi Y and K- N N --> Y N) followed by the decay of the hyperon in pi N. We show that all these mechanisms allow us to explain reasonably well the observed spectrum with standard shallow kaon nucleus optical potential, obtained in chiral models.

We study theoretically the in-flight ($K^-,N$) reactions for the formation of light kaonic nuclear systems to get deeper physical insights on the expected spectra, and to investigate the experimental feasibility of the reaction at new facilities like J-PARC. We show the expected spectra for the formation of the $K^-pp, K^-pn$, $K^-nn$ and $K^-$-$^{11}$B systems which are accessible by the ($K^-,N$) experiments. By considering the conversion part of the Green's function, we can show the missing mass spectra of the ($K^-,N$) reactions coincidence with the particle emissions due to ${\bar K}$ absorption in ${\bar K}N\to πY$ processes. To calculate the cross sections, we use the so-called $Tρ$ approximation to evaluate the optical potential. As for the amplitude $T$, we adopt the chiral unitary amplitude of ${\bar K}N$ channel in vacuum for simplicity, and we also check the medium effects by applying the chiral amplitude at finite density. The effects of the p-wave optical potential of $Σ$(1385) channel and the contribution from ${\bar K^0}$ mixing in $^3$He($K^-,n$) reaction are also evaluated numerically. To understand the meanings of the spectrum shape, we also study the behavior of the poles of kaon Green's function in nuclear matter. We conclude that $^3$He($K^-,n$) and $^3$He($K^-,p$) reactions coincident with the $πΣ$ emission due to ${\bar K}$ absorption may show the certain structure in the bound region spectra indicating the existence of the unstable kaonic nuclear bound states. As for the $^{12}$C($K^-,p$) spectra with the $πΣ$ emission, we may also observe the structure in the bound region, however, we need to evaluate the medium effects carefully for larger nuclei.

Based on the N^*(1535) dominance in the eta N system, eta-mesic nuclei are suitable systems for study of in-medium properties of the N^*(1535) baryon resonance, such as reduction of the mass difference of N and N^* in nuclear medium, which affects level structure of the eta and N^*-hole modes. We find that clear information on the in-medium N^*- and eta-nucleus interactions can be obtained through the formation spectra of the eta-mesic nuclei. The N*(1535) resonance, which dominates the low-energy eta-nucleon scattering, can be seen as a chiral partner of the nucleon. The change of the chiral mass gap between the N* and the nucleon in a nuclear medium has an impact on the properties of the eta-nucleus system. If the N*-nucleon mass gap decreases with a density increase (chiral symmetry restoration) the calculations show the existence of the resonance state at the energy about 60 MeV and two bound eta-nucleus states with the binding energies about -80 MeV. These states can have strong effect on predicted cross sections of the ^12C (gamma,p) ^11B reaction with eta-meson production.

We reanalyze data from ELSA on $ω$ production in nuclei, from where claims of a large shift of the mass were made earlier, which are tied to a certain election of the background in nuclei, very different in shape to the one on the proton. The reanalysis shows that the data demand a very large width of the $ω$ in the medium, with no need for a shift of the mass, for which the experiment is quite insensitive. We study possible $ω$ bound states in the nucleus and find that, even assuming a small width, they could not be observed with the present ELSA resolution. Finally we show that, due to the interplay of background and $ω$ signal, a two bump structure appears with the ELSA set up for the $(γ,p)$ reaction that should not be misidentified with a signal of a possible $ω$ bound state in the nucleus.

The model includes pion, nucleon and the Delta(1232) resonance. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function are taken into account. The model includes pion, nucleon and the Delta(1232) resonance. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function are taken into account. We find a strong reduction of the cross section due to these effects and also substantial modifications in the energy distributions of the final pion. The sensitivity of the results on the axial N-Delta coupling C5A(0) and the coherent fraction in neutral-current pi0 production are discussed.

We consider various cases with different target nuclei and energies systematically and find the clear signals in the theoretical spectra for all cases considered in this article. The signals show very interesting structures, such as the $RESONANCE DIP$ instead of the resonance peak. We discuss the origins of the interesting structures and possibilities to get new information on the existence of the kaonic nuclei from the spectra of the atomic state formations.

Then, we reexamined the meanings of the observed strengths of one-body and two-body kaon absorption, and investigated the effects to the formation spectra of kaon bound states by in-flight ($K^-,p$) reactions. As a natural consequence, if the atomic kaon probes the smaller nuclear density, the ratio of the two-body absorption at nuclear center is larger than the observed value, and the depth of the imaginary potential is deeper even at smaller kaon energies as in kaonic nuclear states because of the large phase space for the two-body processes.

For some cases of possible ωoptical potentials we find clear peaks which could be observable provided a good resolution in the ωenergy is available. We also study the inclusive production of π^0 γin nuclei around the ωenergy and find a double hump structure for the energy spectra, with a peak around a π^0 γenergy of m_ω-100 MeV, which could easily be misidentified by a signal of a bound ωstate in nuclei, while it is due to a different scaling of the uncorrelated π^0 γproduction and ωproduction with subsequent π^0 γdecay.

We apply the NJL model to study the ηand η' meson properties at finite density and calculate the formation cross sections of the ηand η' bound states with the Green function method for (γ,p) reaction. We also discuss the experimental feasibility at photon facilities like SPring-8. The contributions due to the ωmeson production are also included to obtain the realistic (γ,p) spectra. We conclude that we can expect to observe resonance peaks in (γ,p) spectra for the formation of meson bound states and we can deduce new information on ηand η' properties at finite density. These observations are believed to be essential to know the possible mass shift of η' and deduce new information on the effective restoration of the U_A(1) anomaly in the nuclear medium.

We consider $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O as the targets and calculate the spectra of the ($K^-,p$) reactions. We conclude that a no peak structure due to kaonic nucleus formation is expected in the reaction spectra calculated with the chiral unitary kaon--nucleus optical potential. In the spectra with the phenomenological deep kaon--nucleus potential, we may have possibilities to observe some structures due to kaonic nucleus states. For all cases, we have peaks due to the kaonic atom formations in the reaction spectra.

We present a theoretical study on formation rates of ηand ωmeson-nucleus systems induced by (γ,p) reactions on nuclear targets at ideal recoilless condition. We find that the smaller distortion effect in the (γ,p) reaction enables us to investigate properties of the mesons created deeply inside nucleus more clearly. We also consider excitation of scalar-isoscalar (σ) mode in nucleus in order to investigate spectral enhancement around two-pion threshold caused by partial restoration of chiral symmetry. We conclude that valuable information of meson-nucleus interactions can be extracted from global structure of the missing mass spectra in the (γ,p) reaction.
