The ability to design and dynamically control chiroptical responses in solid-state matter at wafer scale enables new opportunities in various areas. Here we present a full stack of computer-aided designs and experimental implementations of a dynamically programmable, unified, scalable chiroptical heterostructure containing twisted aligned one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and non-volatile phase change materials (PCMs). We develop a software infrastructure based on high-performance machine learning frameworks, including differentiable programming and derivative-free optimization, to efficiently optimize the tunability of both excitonic reciprocal and linear-anisotropy-induced nonreciprocal circular dichroism (CD) responses. We experimentally implement designed heterostructures with wafer-scale self-assembled aligned CNTs and deposited PCMs. We dynamically program reciprocal and nonreciprocal CD responses by inducing phase transitions of PCMs, and nonreciprocal responses display polarity reversal of CD upon sample flipping in broadband spectral ranges. All experimental results agree with simulations. Further, we demonstrate that the vertical dimension of heterostructure is scalable with the number of stacking layers and aligned CNTs play dual roles - the layer to produce CD responses and the Joule heating electrode to electrically program PCMs. This heterostructure platform is versatile and expandable to a library of 1D nanomaterials and electro-optic materials for exploring novel chiral phenomena and photonic and optoelectronic devices.

To lower the barrier to diffractive optical neural networks (DONNs) design, exploration, and deployment, we propose LightRidge, the first end-to-end optical ML compilation framework, which consists of (1) precise and differentiable optical physics kernels that enable complete explorations of DONNs architectures, (2) optical physics computation kernel acceleration that significantly reduces the runtime cost in training, emulation, and deployment of DONNs, and (3) versatile and flexible optical system modeling and user-friendly domain-specific-language (DSL). As a result, LightRidge framework enables efficient end-to-end design and deployment of DONNs, and significantly reduces the efforts for programming, hardware-software codesign, and chip integration. There is an emerging recognition that successful utilization of chiral degrees of freedom can bring new scientific and technological opportunities to diverse research areas. Hence, methods are being sought for creating artificial matter with controllable chirality in an uncomplicated and reproducible manner. Here, we report the development of two straightforward methods for fabricating wafer-scale chiral architectures of ordered carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with tunable and giant circular dichroism (CD). Both methods employ simple approaches, (i) mechanical rotation and (ii) twist-stacking, based on controlled vacuum filtration and do not involve any sophisticated nanofabrication processes. We used a racemic mixture of CNTs as the starting material, so the intrinsic chirality of chiral CNTs is not responsible for the observed chirality. In particular, by controlling the stacking angle and handedness in (ii), we were able to maximize the CD response and achieve a record-high deep-ultraviolet ellipticity of 40 $\pm$ 1 mdeg/nm. Our theoretical simulations using the transfer matrix method reproduce the salient features of the experimentally observed CD spectra and further predict that a film of twist-stacked CNTs with an optimized thickness will exhibit an ellipticity as high as 150 mdeg/nm. The created wafer-scale objects represent a new class of synthetic chiral matter consisting of ordered quantum wires whose macroscopic properties are governed by nanoscopic electronic signatures such as van Hove singularities. These artificial structures with engineered chirality will not only provide playgrounds for uncovering new chiral phenomena but also open up new opportunities for developing high-performance chiral photonic and optoelectronic devices.

In dual-functional communication-radar systems, common radio frequency (RF) signals are used for both communication and detection. For better compatibility with existing communication systems, we adopt multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals as integrated signals and investigate the estimation performance of MIMO-OFDM signals. We first analyze the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of parameters estimation. Then, transmit powers over different subcarriers are optimized to achieve the best tradeoff between transmission rate and estimation performance. Finally, we propose a more accurate estimation method which utilizes canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) of three-order tensor to obtain the parameter matrices. Due to the characteristic of the column structure of the parameter matrices, we just need to use DFT / IDFT to recover the parameters of multiple targets. The simulation results show that the estimation method based on tensor can achieve performance close to CRLB and the estimation performance can be improved by optimizing the transmit powers.

Diffractive optical neural networks have shown promising advantages over electronic circuits for accelerating modern machine learning (ML) algorithms. However, it is challenging to achieve fully programmable all-optical implementation and rapid hardware deployment. Furthermore, understanding the threat of adversarial ML in such system becomes crucial for real-world applications, which remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate a large-scale, cost-effective, complex-valued, and reconfigurable diffractive all-optical neural networks system in the visible range based on cascaded transmissive twisted nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulators. With the assist of categorical reparameterization, we create a physics-aware training framework for the fast and accurate deployment of computer-trained models onto optical hardware. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate physics-aware adversarial attacks onto the system, which are generated from a complex-valued gradient-based algorithm. The detailed adversarial robustness comparison with conventional multiple layer perceptrons and convolutional neural networks features a distinct statistical adversarial property in diffractive optical neural networks. Our full stack of software and hardware provides new opportunities of employing diffractive optics in a variety of ML tasks and enabling the research on optical adversarial ML.

Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs)-polymer composites are promising candidates for a myriad of applications. Ad-hoc CNTs-polymer composite fabrication techniques inherently pose roadblock to optimized processing resulting in microstructural defects i.e., void formation, poor interfacial adhesion, wettability, and agglomeration of CNTs inside the polymer matrix. Although improvement in the microstructures can be achieved via additional processing steps such as-mechanical methods and/or chemical functionalization, the resulting composites are somewhat limited in structural and functional performances. Here, we demonstrate that 3D printing technique like-direct ink writing offers improved processing of CNTs-polymer composites. The shear-induced flow of an engineered nanocomposite ink through the micronozzle offers some benefits including reducing the number of voids within the epoxy, improving CNTs dispersion and adhesion with epoxy, and partially aligns the CNTs. Such microstructural changes result in superior mechanical performance and heat transfer in the composites compared to their mold-casted counterparts. This work demonstrates the advantages of 3D printing over traditional fabrication methods, beyond the ability to rapidly fabricate complex architectures, to achieve improved processing dynamics for fabricating CNT-polymer nanocomposites with better structural and functional properties.

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) manifests its destructiveness on marine risers in deep-water oil and gas development. Many types of riser fairings are employed in the practical applications of ocean engineering due to their effectiveness in suppressing VIV. However, few reports have been found on the optimal design of the fairing profile. In this study, we conduct shape optimization by integrating computational fluid dynamics and genetic algorithm at a low Reynolds number. The fairing profile is parameterized by Bézier curves with control points adopted as design variables, and lift coefficient is selected as the objective function to obtain optimal fairing. The optimal solution shows that the water-drop-shaped fairing presents a high performance in the condition of two degrees of freedom (DOFs), whereas the caudal fin-like-shaped fairing has good stability in 3-DOF condition. Optimization results indicate that the water-drop-shaped fairing suppresses amplitude up to 99% and reduces drag coefficient by almost 51% at Ur=5.0 for the 2-DOF condition. For the 3-DOF condition, the formation of two symmetric vorticities with opposite directions generated at the bilateral of the optimal fairing leads to fairing stability in flow.

Nonperturbative coupling of light with condensed matter in an optical cavity is expected to reveal a host of coherent many-body phenomena and states. In addition, strong coherent light-matter interaction in a solid-state environment is of great interest to emerging quantum-based technologies. However, creating a system that combines a long electronic coherence time, a large dipole moment, and a high cavity quality ($Q$) factor has been a challenging goal. Here, we report collective ultrastrong light-matter coupling in an ultrahigh-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in a high-$Q$ terahertz photonic-crystal cavity in a quantizing magnetic field, demonstrating a cooperativity of $\sim$360. The splitting of cyclotron resonance (CR) into the lower and upper polariton branches exhibited a $\sqrt{n_\mathrm{e}}$-dependence on the electron density ($n_\mathrm{e}$), a hallmark of collective vacuum Rabi splitting. Furthermore, a small but definite blue shift was observed for the polariton frequencies due to the normally negligible $A^2$ term in the light-matter interaction Hamiltonian. Finally, the high-$Q$ cavity suppressed the superradiant decay of coherent CR, which resulted in an unprecedentedly narrow intrinsic CR linewidth of 5.6 GHz at 2 K. These results open up a variety of new possibilities to combine the traditional disciplines of many-body condensed matter physics and cavity-based quantum optics.

Finite-difference time-domain method is employed to investigate the optical properties of semiconductor thin films patterned with circular holes. The presence of holes enhances the coupling of the incident plane wave with the thin film and greatly enhances the absorption performance. For a typical 100 nm thin film, the optimal hole pattern is achieved when the hole radius is 180 nm and volume fraction is about $30\%$. Disorderness can alter the absorption spectra and has an impact on the broadband absorption performance. The non-uniform radius of holes can slightly broaden the absorption peaks and enhance the integrated absorption. Random hole position can completely change the shape of the absorption spectra and the averaged integrated absorption efficiency is slightly smaller than the optimized ordered nanohole pattern. Compared to random positioned nanoholes or ordered nanohole, amorphous arrangement of nanoholes will result in a much better absorption performance. However, it is also found that the absorption enhancement of amorphous pattern over an ordered pattern is weak when the incident angle departures from normal or when the intrinsic material absorption is strong.
