Secondly, the logic of the state’s techno-entrepreneurship fund monitoring staff seemed to be a vital factor in the sustainability of the startup. Finally, the ethical and passionate conduct of business by these startups could be a factor drawing third parties into becoming stakeholders. Based on these findings three propositions are stated to be studied in the future.

The first project, carried out with the faculty of management, aims to familiarize the teams with the challenges of ‘real life tender-like conditions’. In the following three projects, teams perform their assigned antenna projects. Each team researches the theoretical background, studies the main parameters of antennas and evaluates them. After designing, simulating, specifying the testing requirements of the antennas, each team makes one financial and one time budget. At the end of the term, each team makes a presentation to a jury. Finally, a questionnaire is conducted to evaluate the achievement of the outcomes. This paper focuses on the first two projects because they constitute the critical stages of the course as the first project enables inexperienced students to discover the issues they might face in a ‘real world’ project and draw lessons from that experience to be used in the more comprehensive following project. The first project’s aim is to equip the inexperienced students with elementary knowledge on working in a team; paying attention to time, budget, project phases and people management issues so that they can use that knowledge in the second project, thus learning takes place as a product of consecutive projects. Statistical information on the students’ academic performances is analyzed to observe if this course has improved their academic performance. The results indicate that ‘consecutive-project-based learning’ is an effective method in antennas and propagation course.

The first paper analyzes the determinants of R&D expenditures with specific focus on foreign ownership and spillovers; the second paper studies the impact of R&D on productivity and the third paper analyzes whether conducting R&D enables Turkish manufacturing firms to catch up with sector leaders as far as their productivity levels are concerned. The first contribution of the thesis is the use of newly available data from Turkish Institute of Statistics (Turkstat). Two different surveys are matched at the firm level for the years 2003-2007. The second contribution is the employment of a new methodology: Heckman two-stage procedure with instrumental variables for panel data. The third contribution is collection of qualitative data via interviews with R&D performing firms. Foreign ownership has no statistically significant effect on R&D intensity. Foreign knowledge spillovers exert a negative effect on R&D, ...

This paper sets out to investigate the effects of R&D spillovers at provincial level with specific reference to Turkey. To serve this purpose, data published by Turkish Statistical Institute have been employed. The paper covers the period from 2003 to 2007. The number of data points is 342 subsequent to the aggregation of data at the firm level. Of the data aggregated, it has been found out that 162 of them are zero. While running the spatial econometric estimations, inverse distance and neighboring matrices were employed as the weighting matrix. The determinants of R&D activities employed in the study are size, represented by the number of employees; qualified labor, represented by the number of R&D employees; technology transfer represented by expenses for licensing; foreign ownership, Pavitt sector dummies,...

With the falling costs of information and communication technologies, multinational companies (MNCs) from the developed world first took advantage of the low labor costs in the developing economies. However, recognizing the lower cost of skilled manpower in the same countries, MNCs started to take advantage of scientists and engineers as well. Therefore, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been recognized as a major means of knowledge transfer mechanism from the developed to the developing world. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the impact of FDI on the R&D activities of Turkish manufacturing firms. Using firm-level data, this study examines the 2003-2007 period when new legislation favoring FDI inflow had been enacted and when the government started to pursue strategic science and technology policies. Our findings indicate that there is a negative impact of foreign ownership on the R&D intensity of local enterprises. As for the geographical knowledge spillover from foreign firms, we find yet another significant negative effect which may be attributable to the competition effect born by the presence of foreign firms in the market.

We use new enterprise-level data to study Turkey. Our results indicate that foreign ownership has a significantly negative effect on R&D activities. On the other hand, we find a strong geographical spillover effect from foreign to domestic firms. Regardless of the sector of a foreign firm, the presence of a foreign firm in the same province with a domestic firm produces strong technological spillover effects.

The literature states that biased perceptions can have lasting effect even after the training (von Graevenitz, et.al, 2010). Lack of knowledge hinders the decision making of nascent entrepreneurs when they rely on personal opinions or past experiences as heuristics derived from small samples or non-random samples. Currently entrepreneurship education is not designed to address the impact of biased perceptions and lack of knowledge. There is a need to separate biased perceptions from ‘lack of knowledge’ so that entrepreneurship training could be implemented on a more tailored manner. It is the goal of this paper to devise such an instrument in the lean start up context which is a widely used model of entrepreneurship training. The proposed instrument is tested on a convenience-based sample composed of 212 people. Employment of a three-tiered instrument in this context is a first of its kind. Kno...
