Via dance the participants learn to become members of a group and to express their feeling and emotions physically in a non-aggressive manner. Familiarity with their bodies is increased and they learn to use it creatively. Furthermore, physical flexibility, movement co-ordination and cardiovascular fitness improve. For these reasons dance is sometimes referred to as sport or art because it combines gymnastic and artistic qualities, or as a healing art because it promotes physical and mental well-being. However, on reviewing the literature, it seems that there is a lack of research efforts noted regarding the effectiveness of social/traditional dance and especially Greek dances on improving perceived health state. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of the participation in Greek dances in perceived health state of adults. In the research participated voluntari...

Twenty adult members of a dance club aged 20-55 years old (7 men and 13 women) participated in the study. Pedometers were placed above the right hip of the individuals and recorded steps, distance, time of participation, calories, burnt fat during a structured 60-minute Greek traditional dance session. Steps per minute were, also, calculated. The measurement was performed twice for each individual, with the same dancing protocol, with an interval of one week between measurements. The results for reliability showed that intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was significantly high for all variables, ranged from .91 to .99. Paired sample t-test analysis showed no significant differences between measurement...

In the research participated voluntarily one hundred and twelve healthy people, women and men, 65-88 years old, members of Centers of Old People's Open Protection from the city of Thessaloniki. The subjects were separated in two groups, experimental and control, with criterion the participation or non-participation, respectively, in a program for learning and performing Greek dances at least for the last two years. For the evaluation of physical health, questions/items from a study of Ransford and Palisi (1996) were used. For data analysis were used descriptive analysis, as well as Analysis of Variance and Multivariate Analysis of Variance for between groups differences, from the SPSS version 18 for windows. From the results, it was proved that a significantly greater percentage of subjects of the experimental group, who attend a Greek dances program,...

Fifty four healthy women, aged 21 to 55 years, were selected randomly and participated in the study voluntarily. The subjects were divided randomly in two groups: group A (n=27) participated in an afternoon aerobic dance bout and group B (n=27) participated in an afternoon Greek dances bout, both for 60 min. About 5 min before and after the end of aerobic dance bout and Greek dance bout the subjects completed the 37-item Profile of Mood States (McNair et al., 1971), proposed by Shacham (1983), while five additional items were included, measuring exhilaration. In addition, they completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger et al., 1970). For data analysis the statistic packet SPSS/PC ver. 18.0 for windows was used. In particular, descriptive analysis was used, as well as the student t-test to evaluate significant differences be...

For this purpose, 40 sedentary healthy adults, 23 women and 17 men, aged 35-55 years, who didn’t participate in any group or individual exercise, physical activity or dancing program for the past six months, were randomly chosen and separated to an experimental and a control group. The subjects of the experimental group (n=20, 12 women and 8 men) attended a Greek traditional dances program of moderate intensity, at a frequency of three training sessions per week, for 60 minutes each, while the subjects of the control group (n=20, 11 women and 9 men) were asked to continue their daily habits for the same period. Maximal aerobic capacity (VO 2 max) was assessed for both groups before and after the 24-week period by the implementation of the Rockport one-mile walk test. Before and after the 24-week period, resting heart rate (RHR), diastolic blood pre...

The research involved 147 people, 43 men and 104 women, aged 49,73±8,141 years old, members of Cultural Clubs. The participants were randomly divided into the experimental group (N=75) and the control group (N=72). The experimental group participated in online live group lessons of Greek traditional dances, through the online platform ZOOM, twice a week. Each lesson had a 45-minute duration and the program lasted 12 weeks, during the quarantine imposed due to COVID-19. During the same period of 12 weeks, the control group continued its daily life in quarantine. The participants in both groups completed the Heatherton and Polivy (1991) State Self-Esteem Scale to measure performance self-esteem, social self-esteem and appearance self-esteem, as well as the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-FORM X-1 by Spielberger et al. Regular physical activity has a variety of important consequences (Zullig et al., 2005). Results of the studies continue to support a growing literature suggesting that exercise, physical activity and physical-activity interventions have beneficial effects across several physical and mental-health outcomes (Penedo, & Dahn, 2005). They include reducing risk factors for cardiovascular diseases for people of all ages and decreasing psychological problems, such as depression, anxiety, and stress (Lollgen et al., 2009). Minhyun et al. (2015) suggest that doing regular physical activity is vital as it promotes physical and psychological well-being.In addition to physical and psychological benefits, physical activity has a positive impact on developing social relationships (McAuley et al., 2006), as well as enhancing perceptions of self-mastery and self-efficacy (Stewart et al., 2007). Participants in physical activit...

They Vision plays a major role in both the maintenance of balance and its recovery. Visual impairment can affect the equilibrium of proprioceptive systems, resulting in problems with balance, posture, coordination, tension of the neck and shoulder muscles, and loss of spinal rotation and reciprocal arm swing (38). Individuals with vision loss have decreased postural stability. Therefore they are unable to compensate for restricted visual input to maintain postural stability (36), which in turn affects their ability to balance and increases the likelihood of falling (34). Postural control and balance involve controlling the position of the body in space for stability and orientation (41). Visually impaired persons need these basic motor skills in straight-line walking and for detecting veering (47). Poor balance results in problems with straight walking and control of t...

Two hundred ninety six healthy subjects, 22,59 + 6,31 years old, participated in the research. All the subjects were active or former athletes, competed or had competed in athletic clubs throughout Greece, in various team sports or individual sports and competing categories and had suffered a knee ligament injury in their career as athletes. The effects of exercise on the rehabilitation of knee ligament injuries were measured through a scale of measurements. For data analysis was used the descriptive analysis of the SPSS version 20 for Windows . Data processing showed that the highest percentage of the knee injuries (43,80%) concerns anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, 34,40...
